The flagstones from around the property would look great in the cottage. But it might be a good idea to plot the size and shape of each one, like puzzle pieces, and play with the arrangement of smaller paper versions of the stones until you get a look you like. Once you've decided, then place the real, large stones. It doesn't sound like a good idea visually to put all the big ones in the middle. If either of you has the computer skills, there must be a program that would give you the same view you'd have standing in the room. Good luck!

My husband, Dave and I watch your weekly program on the TV together each time we see a new episode is posted. We love your sense of humor. You two remind me of when we ran a resort in a remote wilderness area in eastern Oregon. One of the things we were thinking about is if you can use a block and tackle or rotating Jib frame to move the flagstone into the door of the cabin.
Katie, we love the cooking sessions and how it was done in the past and you are preserving the process for the future. What a treasure to have the old cookbook and the knowledge to understand and go with it. We love the history you share as well. Scott, You are a hoot. Anyone with half a brain would see you do your fair share of work there. You two are an inspiration to so many.
You two seem to have a rich past separately and together. Katie, I have heard you mention being on a farm, spending time in the United States (?), and so on. Scott, were you a city boy before meeting with Katie? How long have you two been together? Your avid fans from Idaho, USA. Dave & Mary

Used to have a 200/250 year old cottage. Floor wood in one room was rotten in one area. Lifted it to find it was laid on soil. Excavated two feet down to put in pillars and joists supports for the new floor. At that depth found a pair of boots and cleaning brushes buried in the corner of the room. It had obviously been filled in at some point for some unknown reason.

The previous comment re arrangement of stones is right on. I have one small suggestion to go along with that. Stones floors can be quite cold, depending on your environment. I would suggest placing a good layer of gravel down, then high density foam , thinset or concrete then your flagstones , just to break the earth connection that conducts cold. You could on top off the foam place pex piping cover it with concrete to have hydronic heat. Once heated your floor would act as a heater for your home and always be warm. Just a thought. Love your island, reminds me quite a bit of Northern Ontario where a lot of Scottish immigrants made their home, I can see why almost identical country in scenery

Underfloor heating would be so amazing - especially if we could connect it to the stove...

    • @hansbehrmann8152
      @hansbehrmann8152 Месяц назад

@@TheScottishIsle There are stoves on the market, wood, gas ,coal and even oil that do exactly that. Where I live in Northwestern Ontario, Canada (Kenora Region) Outside wood boilers and inside wood stoves (with attached tanks to heat water-for home use /and or hydronic heat are common .If you are stand-alone or off grid like a lot of homesteaders these stoves are amazing . I believe a lot of European countries especially, Norway, Denmark , Sweden and Finland sell many types of these stoves. England also has stoves available but I do not know the brand. Again Good work on your reno's ,it can be a lot of work but fun at the same time and you can appreciate the results!

Scott could build a wooden sled to move the rocks. They also have these little square wood, things with wheels and the d. I y stores that you could use to help pull. And push the rack slabs into the house. I've seen them used on RUclips channels to pull big heavy beams through old houses that they're renovating. You could also use a wheeled dolly cart while they slabs are tilted on their sides to move the slabs inside the house. They have dollys with bottom extentions so you could put the slabs at a good angle or lay flat for better moving.

Haha…Shona has the zoomies. So cute. You
both are awsome. Staying historically correct with your renovations. Impressive. Flagstones will look amazing but the work ahead is not going to be easy. But knowing you two it will get done and it will be done right. Kudos to both you.

Hello Katie and MP Scott 😂.
    Nice to see you back.
Can I suggest you make a wooden frame with a backing to place the viking ship slate inside of. This should protect the edges etc from damage. It's gorgeous and needs protecting.
    See you next time ..
P.S. I'm exhausted just thinking about moving those flag stones.

Is it possible that the concrete floor was placed over the top of flagstones? Maybe the concrete was placed over the top to level the floor so that they could lay the floor boards?

I have to resubscribe every time I watch a video. What's up with YT? You will be at 100K by end of year. 🎉 ❤

Because every time you choose to click on one of our thumbnails to watch a new episode, RUclips automatically unsubscribes you. This has been happening to a large percentage of our subscribers since March this year. On average, RUclips are unsubscribing people from 'The Scottish Isle' to the tune of 80-100 subs per day. If it wasn't for them doing this - and we have no idea why they are (they're not interested in acknowledging it, let alone stopping it) - we'd already be at 100k subs. We've given up worrying about it. There is nothing we can do but watch people being unsubbed from the channel in real time.

As Dottie suggested lay out your plan on paper. With careful measurements, you could have a great flag stone floor. Getting the flag stones to the cottage is the easy part. Getting the living room floor prepped, and carrying the flag stones into the house might be the tricky part. You might consider renting a hand-dolly to transfer the flag stones into the house.
How ever did you get a lifetime ban from Sainsbury's? Did you do something totally obnoxious or just get under the manager's skin? To get a lifetime ban here you either have to punch an employee/customer, pull down an entire shelf of pizza sauce in protest, or do something so heinous that the police have to be called you get hauled out in handcuffs.
To lay the flag stone, you'll have to lay a damp course (heavy plastic sheet) then a two to three inch bed of sand. I don't know if you're thinking of cementing the stone in, but a layer of fine quick-crete swept into the cracks in between and dampened will set the stone. Feel free to ignore all this advice if you already have a better plan.
