Michelle's strong and striking soprano is the underrated anchor to this beautiful song. Her crisp, perfect-pitch entrance at the beginning with the line "And its perfume being such that it's causing me to swoon" sets the stage for the whole magic that ensues. Her harmonic contributions throughout are essential to the whole. And her solo return at the end - in a voice that at this stage is almost spent -- encapsulates the powerful fragility of the song. Brilliant.
it's a pity 'Safe in my garden' was utterly overlooked when it was released... such a powerful song... such beautiful vocals by Cass and Michelle... what a haunting melody...
@@4wallguitars Twelve Thirty isn't underrated, it was a hit and played a ton on the radio when it first came out. What's underrated is the album it came from.
Cops out with the megaphones, Tellin' people stay inside their homes. Man, can't they see the world's on fire? Somebody take us away...take us away... No more words needed... I guess.
Without a doubt one of the best harmonies in the history of music. John Phillips despite his many problems was a lyrical genius and this is my favorite song from the sixties. If anyone lived through the violence and anguish of that era, one understands what they are singing about. This and San Francisco also written by Phillips and sung by his best friend Scott Mc Kenzie are both some of the most haunting songs I have ever heard.
This is my all-time favourite record ever. The harmonies are spectacular and this comes to my mind when I am well enough to sit in my wheelchair in my garden. Oh to be back in those wonderful days again. Thank you for sharing this wonderful song.
This would be an apt recording to play at my funereal being a 65 year old English Country Gentleman, now retired spends many hours all seasons in my garden and Summerhouse away from the outside world and all its troubles.
Ray, that sounds like a perfect retirement, I'm the same age as you and have recently moved from london into the country to hopefully spend my last year's in my garden .

Cass dominates this beautiful song, as always. Listening to this in 2020 brings me back to 1967, where things were just as turbulent but as a 16 year old wild child hippie it was a great time, as opposed to being an old infirm and alarmed old man now. Wish I could go back.
Just did a work of digital art called my magic garden and it made me think back to this song, during the turbulent years, listening to this on one of those small diner jukeboxes. They didn't play it that much on the radio then, and I never hear this nowadays so thanks so much! A true classic of the 60s, still relevant today.
Wonderful! Well done! Thank you for featuring one of their most beautiful and powerful songs, from an album that even the group members underrated: THE PAPAS & THE MAMAS.
being homeless it kicked me in the head, having a safe garden area to escape to...."take us away" eeriy aura to see their lie condensed knowing they are all gone, thanx i enjoyed the montage of their lives, its hard because i want to reach out and discuss with them their lives with them, so many questions. the era and that time is appealing, peace love and hope permeating the environment and the effort*** to live together and seek to ignore powers that want to oppress and hurt people. in 73 i became to have my eyes and ears opened so my heart could be softened. music shows, music adventures tuning in turn on the the scene involved with some social issues, 🌹✌❤
Thanks for this, one of their most haunting songs. It was recorded in the attic studio in John and Michelle's house, which could only be reached through a secret passage.
+April Gosa Both Michelle and Cass sings lead...Cass sings together with Michelle in a very subtly way. you can hear her voice in nuances..."..causing me to swoon...", you can hear the same in Got A Feelin'
Safe in my garden, An ancient flower blooms. And the scent from its nature Slowly squares my room; And its perfume being such that it's causing me to swoon. Could it be we were hot-wired? (Safe in my garden, an ancient flower blooms...) Late one night; we're very tired. They stole our minds and thought we'd never know it. (And the scent from its nature slowly squares my room...) This is probably the most subtle and meaningful of all of the protest songs from the Sixties. Plus, it's a Bach-ian two-part invention (look up Bach's inventions).
Ya que no conocía está canción me resulta un muy buen descubrimiento, pero no se trata de nada circunstancial porque así era la creatividad de este grupo, sumado esto a la nostalgia que a uno le embarga al escucharlos.
