    I used to use the Waves SSL G-Buss compressor, but after trying out stuff from Plugin Alliance/Brainworx, it's hard to turn back. The bx_townhouse has become my go to master bus compressor at this point. The Vertigo VSC-2 if I want dual mono VCA/SSL style bus compression so L and R duck independently. Sidechain filtering on compressors should be default at this point going forward for any modern plugin, very helpful on things like the master bus or drum bus group.

  • @qlyde
    @qlyde 7 месяцев назад

    I was thinking 200hz SCF is a bit high for my taste because when I compress a drum bus even a 30-60hz SCF can make a big difference in the triggering of the reduction and affect the balance between the kick & snare BUT this is awesome! You're spot on here, it's undeniable when you judge with your ears first, in a mix bus scenario bypassing the fundamentals of the kick and snare from triggering the reduction really gives that glued sound rather than a typical compression sound. Thank you!

    For me, the Glue from Cytomic is one of greatest VCA compressor emulations around next to native SSL or Townhouse from Brainworx, and last but not least Vertigo VSC2. Still haven't found anything close to the sound and action of these on the bus!

  • @Burbah
    @Burbah 10 месяцев назад +3

    I think you missed something important. Did you notice that after you applied the sidechain hp filter, the vocals were what makes the comp work unevenly? I think that you should've also dipped 1-2 db out of the 1.5k ish frequencies. You need eventually the kick and snare to trigger it evenly and not see too much compression affected from the vocals. In this case, an external sidechain would've been more useful.

  • @hauntedbytheliving1175
    @hauntedbytheliving1175 10 месяцев назад

    Any mix you’ve loved that went through the hardware SSL compression on the board, a 33609 etc. the sidechain method is not employed.
    This is a modern plug-in fad… NOT using the sidechain is actually what creates the classic glue, especially in rock music.
    This is not from my mind, but huge mixers who mix the music you actually hear.
    Streaky’s advice works, too but applies much more to mastering situations where subtlety is desired and where frequency dependent compression tools have been a staple for longer than 10-15 years.
    Embrace the movement caused by bus compression, if it’s pumping too wildly you probably have mixing issues (tubby kick etc) that the bus comp is actually illuminating for you 👍

    For better explanation of the automatic release in VCA compressors and some corrections.
    - The automatic release is used when a song is arrhythmic, this meaning when a song doesn't follow a perfect quantized rhythm, this way you preserve a more natural movement in the song.
    - The high pass in the compressor doesn't complete evade low end, according to the manual the curve is a soft -6 dB/Oct. This means the compressor will still detect low end but in a much softer way. These types of compressors will ALWAYS detect low end since they are monoband. So, the example you are giving with the Pro-Q is really bad. Is not everything above 200hz.
    Also, if you are going to use HP in glue compressing, PLEASE make sure you really know how to control low end.

    Anyone else remember when you needed to order those special cables from Alan Smart to be able to do this? If you know, you know.

    To my ears auto release is more "gluey" than 100 ms which tends to sound "jumpy"

      Yeah I agree 'Auto' sounds more open and less constrained.

      Use Auto for glue, 100ms for punch, these are both common techniques for G bus comps.

    This is probably the clearest explanation of bus compression/glue, and even more so due to the shorter length of the whole video.
