      I actually have pictures of the squirrels doing the same thing😜. Hopefully you don’t have overhead trees-electrical wires-or other close items they can use to “launch” from.
      Hope it keeps working-if not you got a fun slinky to play with!

    Hi Rick
    When I saw your video about using a slinky to keep the squirrels away from my bird feeder I thought that it was a great idea. Squirrels were having a field day with my bird food so I couldn’t wait to try it out. The first day was great! I got a real kick out of seeing the squirrels try climbing the feeder pole only to be knocked on their butts when they grabbed the slinky. Our squirrels must be more intelligent than yours because the second day they were devouring the birdseeds. They managed to get their paws through the coils and climb right up. Today I am trying a piece of 4” PVC pipe. I got the idea from another RUclips video.

      Thank you for trying my idea!
      My slinky fix is still working for me. I know squirrels are VERY clever, I think my situation has been helped by my 2 small dogs (I call them pretend dogs😜) that I let out on occasion to chase them away.
      My son tried this as well, but had squirrels jumping from a nearby fence-then from a storage shed, and ultimately from a huge pin oak tree overhead. Placement of feeder is key-or maybe some pretend dogs-or-non bird catching cats!
      Thanks fir watching!!!!

      I’ll bet greasing the pole just one time would work as a “double threat.” Either tactic in isolation might only deter, but together... Also I think it’s more difficult to deter established squirrels that know what’s up there, but if you could just get to the next generation. They may not be as persistent to defeat the double threat.

      @@Stricklandia1 Vaseline works like a charm. They hate getting it on them. They try it once and that's it. It's a simple and cheap solution that most already have. You just have to make sure they have to climb the pole to get to the feeder.

    Just smear some Vaseline on the pole and be done with it. Re-apply every few months. They hate getting that stuff on them. They try it once and they're done. I've been using it for 30 yrs. The only time they ever get up there is if I forget to re-apply it for, say, 6 Mos. The great thing is, they don't constantly test it like with these other devices. It's only when a young squirrel comes along and tries it when I haven't re-applied it for awhile. 5 mins later I'm good for another few Mos.

    • @RickWolf
      @RickWolf  2 года назад

      Yes, I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you!!! Those pesky critters are very smart. I find if the squirrels have become “regulars” at a feeder, it’s almost impossible to keep them away. I know we have a couple of noisy “pretend” dogs (about 10 pounds) and we let them out to bark when a squirrel is around as well as the slinky. I think it is that combo that helps! Good luck with the baffle and water cannon @ thank you for watching my channel!

    • @RickWolf
      @RickWolf  2 года назад

      @@lucasfriedman1730 you sure can try. It all depends on how the squirrels have access. If the pole is too short or they jump from a nearby tree the slinky wont help.

      Hey Susan, just smear some Vaseline on the feeder pole; works better than anything else. They hate getting that stuff on them, they try it once and they're done. It doesn't hurt them. You just re-apply every few Mos or so. Make sure they have to climb the pole to get to it. The only time I ever see one even try it is with the young ones. They only try it once tho. Then they're relegated to just hanging around the base getting the seeds the birds scatter 😁👍

    Any ideas for feeders hanging from branches though?

    • @RickWolf
      @RickWolf  3 года назад

      That is a TOUGH one. Squirrels are so smart and problem solve well. My thought would be utilizing a large squirrel cone and add to it with something unstable extending from the edge of the cone?
      They need a toe hold or some platform to jump from. If you can put small 3”x4” tin cut outs hung to extend from the cone with possibly fish string? You could try attaching a slinky on top of the cone to make it an unstable platform??
      I also find keeping any of your house pets focused on the squirrels and let them out when you can this all makes your feeder less desirable than another good source. Good luck

      Under your tree put a solar powered ultrasonic squirrel repellent..they make noise as soon a critter approaches.
      This is the only solution, nothing else works. Squirrels are quite intelligent creatures, they outsmart us most of the times 😊

    Can you show us how far down you attached it & how the squirrels were deterred?

    • @RickWolf
      @RickWolf  Год назад

      I attached it on the bottom of the feeder (I used a screw and crimped the wire of the slinky under the screw head) and the feeder pole is a little less in diameter than the pipe I have attached to the feeder. It allows me to simply lift the feeder up to remove it-I don’t have the actual feeder fastened to the mounting pole.

      I’m sorry Nicole!! I have truly had mine up for a couple of years now and they are working. I think a big part is nothing around for them to jump from & I have two small dogs that keep an eye out and bark a lot when squirrels come around. So, it might be good to combine the slinky with another detourant?

  • @chrislapp9468
    @chrislapp9468 Год назад

    The feeder is too low. Attach a plastic road cone like the DPW uses. The pole might fit inside the hole in the top. Install a stop on the pole to hang it from. Cut the base off the cone. Pop rivet aliminum flashing to the bottom, cuz they will chew the plastic off.
