Animated films have the potential to follow the books more faithfully in many ways, and blur out the rest for imagination. For example, I'd like to see a 6'6'' Aragorn Longshanks - nothing against Viggo, but it'd be cool to see the text faithfully translated to the screen for once. And a Gandalf "strongly built with broad shoulders, though shorter than the average of men and now stooped with age". It'd be difficult to find talented actors that both look the part and are available, but artists can produce them right away, given the right text description. But in this day and age, (perhaps in any age), faithfulness isn't the top priority. I have zero expectation. Maybe years later AI can just generate everything, and talentless writers, producers, directors can lose their job.
I'm cautiously optimistic but I'm not happy that they're making Helm's daughters name be Hera. It's a Greek name and the Rohirrim names are based on Old English, Tolkien made LotR up because he was a language fan, which makes me nervous.

Hammerhand was not a very noble hero but a rather grim figure. The whole story of his is unsetteling and scary. How he killed that one dude as if by accident, and the scene where he just stands in the valley like a haunting figure does not inspire glory and heroism. I hope the producers capture this feel. It might be an actually morally gray story if told correctly.
I like the premise, but if it even smalls of Rings of Power, that was a blatant slap in the face of Tolkien as one could do. Tolkien, who made it clear he did not want his work used to make political or social propaganda, (“The canons of narrative in any medium cannot be wholly different; and the failure of poor films is often precisely in exaggeration, and in the intrusion of unwarranted matter owing to not perceiving where the core of the original lies.”). Then I will do as I did with that BS and ignore it. As to what to use, there is a Hudge world and so many intentionally left untouched story threads to use Why not? What happened to the two blue wizards? Tell us about Numanor or the kingdoms to the South and East. Did any of the Entwives make it to safety? So much untouched and fertile ground to enjoy, why tread in the same place unless they are without real inspiration and or unable or unwilling to get good writers. IMO
I’ve never cared for the appearance of Japanese anime & so I’ve never watched any of it. But the still photos I’ve seen for the WotR don’t look like that to me. There seems to be a lot more detail in the drawings & more color than other stills of Japanese anime that I’ve seen. And they appear to have taken the landscape/architecture directly from the LotR movies, which is encouraging & comforting to immerse myself back into the well-known world of Middle-earth. So while I was initially skeptical of the project because they used the term “anime”, I’ve decided (in my own mind) that it has just become a generic term for animation & now I’m looking forward to it this December. 😊 I haven’t watched any of the videos discussing the announcement of The Hunt for Gollum because all the thumbnails seem pretty negative & I don’t want my opinion influenced by others who are quick to condemn it. But I will say my main concern is there doesn’t seem to be much there, there. You’ve got Gandalf & Aragorn trudging around Ithilien for a while, then Aragorn alone finding Gollum, driving him to Mirkwood & then his escape. Plus, they are going to have to recast the actors (except for Andy Serkis) as Ian McKellan & Viggo Mortensen are both too old for the roles now. Idk how I feel about that. What kind of story will it be? Seems like they’re going to have to invent things to fill out the action & that hasn’t gone well for film makers so far. I’m going to reserve judgement till I see it, but they are going to have to do some major tinkering to beef it up into a full movie, imo.

Peter jackson did not do a good movie without the Lord of the Rings lol. He needs somebody else to do the hard work to build structure of a good story, so no, this will not go well.
Why does it matter who the talents behind this project are? This is not Helm's story, despite what the title might imply. It's Hèra's story...they've said as much already. Good God, they couldn't even bother to find an appropriate name for the character and slapped an accent on the initial "Hera" choice when it became the laughingstock it so richly deserves to be. This isn't to say the voice acting and animation won't be good - in all likelyhood they will. But thus far, we have every indication the core of this story is yet another subversion of the viewer's expectation.

Phillipa Boyens actually confirmed its not Greek, but Germanic- Héra. Its in the interview with Nerd of the rings.

I would love a big budget Silmarillion TV show with either Maedhros or Maglor as the main characters. It would be both epic and tragic!
