  • The introduction of in-game cinematics was a game-changer for the character art team on Baldur’s Gate 3, as this meant characters needed to look good not only from the perspective of top-down combat cameras but also for extreme close-ups in cinematics. In this talk, we’ll dive into some of the tools and processes that helped the Larian Studios team create high-quality characters, and allowed them to build up a customization system for players and NPCs to populate the vast world of Baldur's Gate. Alena will demonstrate a breakdown of a character, discuss ways to speed up production, and highlight how much can be achieved with simple texture customization techniques.

This was amazing! The amount of work that was done by all the Larian studios absolutely blew me away while playing the game. Especially the character art team, the faces, the armors, the hair. The sheer amount of work that was done together with the animation team as well as the voice actors, incredible characters and I can only hope to join their ranks one day!

It's amazing how from a single head mesh you can create that many characters that feel so diferent! SO well thought out!

So I'm pretty active in the bg3 modding community, and a lot of my work was focused specifically on creating unoffical resources for people looking to create or modify bg3's skin texture maps; like I have made recreations of the skin shader in both blender and substance painter for people to use. What I am trying to say is that watching this was an absolutely surreal experience.
It was so interesting to see how the work flow I made while stumbling around in the dark compared to the actual one, what I had gotten right and wrong, and the things I had never even thought to try. (ie I had never even considered making a HMVY map by extracting the channels form a base colour map)
Anyway, this was a very interesting and insightful talk, thank you for sharing.

@@BuzzKirill3D I did share a link to it in another comment but I think it got removed.
You should be able to find it by searching for 'Substance Painter' on the bg3 section of Nexus Mods.
