So far in the couple of weeks that I've been wet shaving I do tend to get razor burns from time to time but as far as Nick's and cuts are concerned, they are all on my moustache and it always happens when I try to go against the grain with it. Work on one side of it and once it smoothens up, I go to the other side and it's not long before I start seeing blood on the side I just finished lol. Feels like the blade is skipping somewhat so I'm thinking about giving the feather blade and an alum block a try to help mitigate this.
I stopped using very hot water for shaving and it really helped with my skin irritation. Room temp or cold water does well for me. Keeps the hair taught and keeps my pores closed so bacteria can’t get in. Just need to use sharp blades like Feather or Nacet to cut through the stiffer hair.

I had terrible razor burn and dermatologist that I should have my neck layered to clear it up. I switched to a double edge a a week later it was gone.
I have a full beard... but I do shave my neck below my beard and have Always had a real problem with razor burn and irritation on my neck. No matter what type razor I used, even electric razors, they all caused a lot of irritation and redness. But after seeing some of your videos about year ago or so GeoFatBoy, and finding out that DE razors were still being made (as I didn't even know this at the time). I purchased a Parker DE Butterfly razor and accessories from Shave Nation, and after trying a bunch of blades I ended up settling on Parker blades as well. After a bit of a learning curve, this has made a Great Improvement in my shave. The DE razors are FAR superior to all the other junk sold at stores. I also really like the feel of the large natural alum block too after shaving. I do think I will add an additional post shave balm (proabaly the Proraso white as I use their shaving cream too) at some point, but at present I just end with 100% aloe.
glad to see you still doing the videos while others shut em down. I am on year 7 of straight razor and DE shaving. I am shocked that people get ingrown hairs with this style of shaving but thankful for your advice.

I am new to DE shaving. I have had a beard for the last 9.5 years, but I am working towards getting onto a fire department so I figured I better start shaving again. I hated electric razors and normal razors as my skin would get super irritated, it was one of the reasons I first grew a beard. My barber suggested I get a DE safety razor when he took my beard off. Thanks to your videos and a few others I was able to make some informed decisions and get the correct things to get started. I loved my beard, but have seriously been enjoying wet shaving. I got the Proraso White product line to get started, a Merkur 34C, brush, and a sample pack of blades. Working yo figure out what blades my face likes currently. Definitely excited to get more i to wet shaving as I hope to have at least a good 20 years before I can have a beard again. Thanks for the great videos Geo!!!
Yes! I've been using Thayers Lavender for about 2 weeks, and I've definitely seen an improvement in my skin. I feel that I don't even need to use a balm after applying it.
I have a few thayers bottles of the astringent or toner and my wife is into essential oils so we mixed up a few different scents with different healing properties. I really like my thayers
my post-DE shave regimen. Wash face with cold water. Use alum block to close weepers and cuts. The alum block also can indicate where your face is most sensitive after you shave. Wait about 30 seconds after the alum block application and wet face again with cold water. Splash on some witch hazel. Wait about 30 seconds; rinse face with cold water. Next use about half a teaspoon (just a guess) of aftershave splash and let it tingle for a few seconds and finally apply a non-scented moisturizer. This soaks right into your face and you'll feel like a million bucks. Just the way I do my shaving. Your mileage may vary. My pre-shave regimen is to make sure my beard is water-logged (hot or cold water). Use a pre-shave like Proraso. It's a good brand and I also use others. Boar or synthetic brush and lathered in a Shave Nation bowl. I get the lather to have the consistency of Cool Whip and then spend about 2 minutes brushing it into my beard. Add a few drops of water to the lather and then begin my shave. I never buy store bought products and instead order online. There are so many great resources like Shave Nation, etc. where you can get great information and products. Hope this helps the newbies. I was a newbie once too.

Alum block completely eliminated razor bumps. Which are NOT always caused by ingrown hairs. Folliculitis is inflammation...ingrown hairs are ONE cause of it.

About 15-20 years ago i was big into st8 razors and was a big name on straight razor place used to hone peoples razors for them. Past long while i havent been face shaving just having stubble but... Now ive gotten into shaving my head and my new stainless r41 GS arrived today along with somr feather blades. I was nervous to use it not going to lie, but wow not a single cut and went with the grain and the closeness with the r41 gs + feather blade is unbelievable. Ok the razor was probably OTT for my first DE razor but i thought id only get upgradeitis anyway so why not get the best and its stainless, so itll never rust and last a lifetime. Your videos have reminded me of all the old names ie shavemac, taylors, proraso etc, used them all previously. Will grab some sandalwood taylors which was always my favourite. Anyway thanks for your videos.
I get a lot of cuts when I shave late in the day, some Saturdays Sundays that start late when I shave after a shower get several nicks, best time to shave is earlier in the morning, guess the skin still has natural oil and makes the job easier. Great videos Geo!

Something I started doing is after every shave is after rinsing my DE, I pour some rubbing alcohol into the head. Disinfects the blade and stops the nasty bacteria from growing as it sits around. It’s done wonder for my irritation

you can use aftershave as preshave and preshave as aftershave. anything that will help keep water in the skin to soften it. even olive oil will do if you have nothing gents.
Hello Geo, You forgot the cheapest remedy for those little weapers and nicks. TOILET PAPER !!! I remember using that as a spry youngster. Its cheap and is always in the bathroom with you. I have irritation if I don’t shave often enough, using a cartridge would make my upper lip feel like it had been burnt! After switching to a DE I have no pain shaving and my skin feels relieved after a shave, not raw! A little proraso shaving balm and my face feels great!
I'm into wet-shaving for about a year now and I'm really enjoying it and it's safe to say I'm not going back to cartridge. But to be fair I think cartridge razor work pretty decent for most people, yeah it tugs and pulls but I've never had irritation issues or cuts whatsoever. And I don't know why but If I use alum block after the shave I have a terrible redness and burn on my face and neck even if the shave itself was smooth.
I found this works wonders for me; after every shave but definitely if I know I have irritation and razor burn coming, I do a warm water rinse for about 20 seconds, then go directly to the cold water rinse. But not a quick 20 seconds like the warm water, no I literally put both sides of my face under the Tap and let that freezing cold water close my pores and help any redness I might of got. 🥶 Then I keep it on there for about 2-3 mins straight. An iPhone even after a bad shave with a R-41 and feather combo it subsides razor burn to about five minutes instead of half the day. Then I put on my aftershave and balm like normal 💈🥶❄️💈
Awesome stuff. I learned to shave a couple years ago after doing it wrong for 20 years. I still have 1 spot I occasionally get razor burn. I never heard of an alum block but I’m going to try it, thanks for the advice
Man, geofatboy these are really good tips! I’ve been making a lot of mistakes. Like I wash then use pre shave and all that but I don’t think my blades have been very clean. Is it worth it to wash the razor parts and blade with purell sanitizer afterwards to prevent irritation?
How do you get rid of an ingrown hair? I have one from using a Schlick triple blade disposable, now, because of you and others I have graduated to a DE Safety Razor, which I can’t believe feels so good.
Just post-shaved with the alum stick you sell and my face feels great! Its a great compliment to the green proraso preshave and soap, which I also use.
Good tools, products and good prep! Thx to Geo's vids I'm able to shave without cuts and nicks with a safety razor with(!) a relative thin and sensative skin. Since that feminist fvcked up Gilette ad, I never touched those horrible expensive cassette blades again...

Where I can I buy from smaller entrepreneurs, local stores, farmers, and real craftsmen, I do! Got also into knife sharpening a few years ago, having only the best (handmade) knives from Germany and Japan. What about shaving through the grain and still getting razor bumps? What about do give ((no)) wight to the razor while shaving just the wight from the razor and still getting razor bumps? What about doing the whole tips from this great video or from another’s but STILL GETTING RAZOR BUMPS!!! I am tired from this thing ! Please i need an answer.
I shaved with a safety razor (Parker 91R with Parker blade) for the first time in my life yesterday, and I got razor bumps under my chin and on my neck. Weirdly enough I’ve always used a cartridge razor all my life and never had the problem. I don’t know what to do now, should I stay with the safety razor or switch back to cartridge razor ?

Now im wondering what to use as a Shaving cream for the contures because the ones i use in combination with my brush wont let me see them very well so its pretty difficult to get a straight line. Not sure if this is razor burn, but I've noticed I have a reddened area above my collar region from one side of the neck to the other. There's no real pain or soreness; it just looks like I have some light sunburn there.
I used to shave with a Mach 3, and the results with the safety razor are much smoother, but I get horrible razor bumps all over my neck and below my chin. I followed all your recomentadions, I use an oily shaving cream, take my time to apply it with a brush, I warm my face up and use an alcohol-free after shave balm, but after lots of tries i still get severe razor bumps, which I didn’t get with my mach 3. I have the same problem. What I do is shave with two razors. I’ll use my DE razor for 95% of my face and 50% of my neck. Then I’ll take my Mach 3 and touch up the hard to get sensitive areas….my lower neck…around my mouth and chin…and jaw line. I don’t care if I’m not a DE purist. I’ll use whatever it takes to get a BBS shave with as little irritation as possible.

I will give a try those proraso pre shave, shaving cream and after shave. My neck gets razor bumps every time no matter what I do. The moustache area gets red every time as well... I'm in a limbo because my facial hair are not dense enough to grow a beard, and I can't get a decent shave either... I enjoy shaving, it's like a ritual and it's relaxing, however skin irritation ruins everything :/ it simply looks stupid with this red skin under my nose... And before it goes away I have already regrown hair again... Endless loop
@@geofatboy no, actually I've shaved with a safety razor 4 times only so far. The 4th one has been just 10 minutes ago. This time I went for cold water to wash and wet my face, also I used it for the razor(yesterday I've watcher your videos about it). There is quite a difference with cold water. There is still a bit of redness on my moustache and neck area, however it's less than the last time. And also less razor bumps on my neck this time! Moreover, cold water seems to cure tiny cuts. Honestly, every shave gets better and better. I'm knowing my face better, I better handle the razor. Next time I will try hot water for face, and cold for razor only, and maybe finally I'll use the Proraso White Line producs
For me getting the right blade took care of my irritation issues. Lord, Big Ben,Shark, and a few others gave me irritation. Those blades just didn't work well for me. Gillette razors never have me irritation though lol. But the cost of using them is what made me switch to saftey razors.
I've been shaving with cartridge razor blades for over 15 years. I stopped and switched to safety razor, and it irritated my skin. 😢 I guess I just need to get used it.
Came across Iwasaki Kamisori when researching straight razor. It is the most expensive and impressive straight razor I have seen. Then there is the Thiers-Issard Damascus steel folding straight razor. These razors are not for mere mortals.

so i just started using DE razors and ive been having a good bit of razor burn on my neck, i guess im doing too many passes over it to get it very smoothly, i never had this happen with cartridge razors tho..guess everyones skin is different
May I also ask people, 1, can changing your DE razor to a different DE razor cause skin irritation, and 2, can badger shaving brushes/any shaving brushes irritate the skin? I have sensitive skin but it’s sensitive to any perfumes. I am also allergic to any wool products, my skin breaks out into small bumps and rash. So I’m experimenting to see why I now get irritation with my new DE razor, is it due to my skin adjusting to a new razor and/or, is it because I have started to use a shaving brush? Previously I was using Nivea shaving foam for sensitive skin from a can, applied by hand. Help please.
I use a safety razor and have tried nearly everything nothing works. I have severe irritation all year round. Is there such thing as people who just cant shave? I love being clean shaved but tired of having a rash on my face 24 7
I'm for a week shaving with a safety razor and I dont think its working for me. My skin gets red, irritated. If I dont put a little pressure, the razor dont cut the hairs, but with the pressure I get some cuts, a lot of little blood points around the mustache and chin. I tried two different brands of blades but no better results. I'm doing something wrong? With the cartrige I dont have this irritation.
keep at it! try different blades, different razors (open, closed, slant), different prep. try merkur 34c, astra and feather blades and arko soap. don't quit
Yeah, it sounds like you need a different de blade and some slicker soap. Check out a company called "Stirling". They make some of the thickest, slickest, lathers out there. When I first got into wet shaving I ended up getting the "smoothest" blades based on charts that I saw and that was a huge mistake for my skin. I ended up with some blades called "Derby" and they were horrible for me. My skin is on the sensitive side but my hair is coarse, so I had a rough time and gave up on wet shaving for 5 years. I'm back at it now, and I still get a little irritation but things are much better than before. I find a soap causes me more irritation Geo than say a sensitive shave cream - TOBS for example my main cause of irritation though is having to clean up or buff up areas that are still showing signs of whisker growth having said that an excellent video mate :-D
I’m new to DE safety razor shaving. I’ve bought a Van Der Hagen DE razor and I’m using their blades that came with it. I’ve shaved probably 6-7 times and literally cut my face to pieces every time. Do you think it’s because of the blades I’m using?
Nicks Cuts Razor Burn Bumps Ingrown Hairs -- All things I never experienced with a cartridge, except some low grade burn. I've managed to open 50+ bleeding wounds on a single DE shave.

I can personally recommend the Shave Nation wide stick. It lasts a good long time and is very handy.
Yes sir! I bought the wide stick last summer and it works great. So easy to apply. I always reach for it now instead of my traditional alum block.

I can recommend the alum. I have a block in a plastic case, had it about 5 years, cost about a tenner ($15 US or so), use it every shave.

I get a lot of cuts when I shave late in the day, some Saturdays Sundays that start late when I shave after a shower get several nicks, best time to shave is earlier in the morning, guess the skin still has natural oil and makes the job easier. Great videos Geo!

Something I started doing is after every shave is after rinsing my DE, I pour some rubbing alcohol into the head. Disinfects the blade and stops the nasty bacteria from growing as it sits around. It’s done wonder for my irritation

Just transitioned from a cartridge razors to DE razors, first shave is amazing feel with Proraso white products, without nick and iritations.

you can use aftershave as preshave and preshave as aftershave. anything that will help keep water in the skin to soften it. even olive oil will do if you have nothing gents.
The alum on fingers helped me a lot because what whiskers i do have grow sideways not just down.
Hello Geo, You forgot the cheapest remedy for those little weapers and nicks. TOILET PAPER !!! I remember using that as a spry youngster. Its cheap and is always in the bathroom with you. I prefer to apply alum after EVERY shave, and leave it on, letting it dry, following it with witch hazel.
Probably OK to leave the alum on for witch hazel, but you might need to rinse it off for other aftershaves such as balms.

APB 28 agree. I just recently started DE shaving and my skin looks 10 years younger. Zero ingrown hairs. Zero blemishes. Skin super smooth now.

I have irritation if I don’t shave often enough, using a cartridge would make my upper lip feel like it had been burnt! After switching to a DE I have no pain shaving and my skin feels relieved after a shave, not raw! A little proraso shaving balm and my face feels great!

I'm into wet-shaving for about a year now and I'm really enjoying it and it's safe to say I'm not going back to cartridge. But to be fair I think cartridge razor work pretty decent for most people, yeah it tugs and pulls but I've never had irritation issues or cuts whatsoever. And I don't know why but If I use alum block after the shave I have a terrible redness and burn on my face and neck even if the shave itself was smooth.

I found this works wonders for me; after every shave but definitely if I know I have irritation and razor burn coming, I do a warm water rinse for about 20 seconds, then go directly to the cold water rinse. But not a quick 20 seconds like the warm water, no I literally put both sides of my face under the Tap and let that freezing cold water close my pores and help any redness I might of got. 🥶 Then I keep it on there for about 2-3 mins straight. An iPhone even after a bad shave with a R-41 and feather combo it subsides razor burn to about five minutes instead of half the day. Then I put on my aftershave and balm like normal

Man, geofatboy these are really good tips! I’ve been making a lot of mistakes. Like I wash then use pre shave and all that but I don’t think my blades have been very clean. Is it worth it to wash the razor parts and blade with purell sanitizer afterwards to prevent irritation?

How do you get rid of an ingrown hair? I have one from using a Schlick triple blade disposable, now, because of you and others I have graduated to a DE Safety Razor, which I can’t believe feels so good.

Got also into knife sharpening a few years ago, having only the best (handmade) knives from Germany and Japan. Restoring a family piece, an old Latin style machete originally from Germany at the moment. It gives me a lot of joy!

I believe the ASD-2 is a bit more aggressive than the ASD-1. But, I'd like to hear what other users think.I will look into it further though.

I shaved with a safety razor (Parker 91R with Parker blade) for the first time in my life yesterday, and I got razor bumps under my chin and on my neck. Weirdly enough I’ve always used a cartridge razor all my life and never had the problem. I don’t know what to do now, should I stay with the safety razor or switch back to cartridge razor ?

Not sure if this is razor burn, but I've noticed I have a reddened area above my collar region from one side of the neck to the other. There's no real pain or soreness; it just looks like I have some light sunburn there.
I used to shave with a Mach 3, and the results with the safety razor are much smoother, but I get horrible razor bumps all over my neck and below my chin. I followed all your recomentadions, I use an oily shaving cream, take my time to apply it with a brush, I warm my face up and use an alcohol-free after shave balm, but after lots of tries i still get severe razor bumps, which I didn’t get with my mach 3. Any further advice?

I have the same problem. What I do is shave with two razors. I’ll use my DE razor for 95% of my face and 50% of my neck. Then I’ll take my Mach 3 and touch up the hard to get sensitive areas….my lower neck…around my mouth and chin…and jaw line. I don’t care if I’m not a DE purist. I’ll use whatever it takes to get a BBS shave with as little irritation as possible.

I will give a try those proraso pre shave, shaving cream and after shave. My neck gets razor bumps every time no matter what I do. The moustache area gets red every time as well... I'm in a limbo because my facial hair are not dense enough to grow a beard, and I can't get a decent shave either... I enjoy shaving, it's like a ritual and it's relaxing, however skin irritation ruins everything :/ it simply looks stupid with this red skin under my nose... And before it goes away I have already regrown hair again... Endless loop
Have you shaved for 30 days with a safety razor? It takes a while for your face to get used to it.
@@geofatboy no, actually I've shaved with a safety razor 4 times only so far. The 4th one has been just 10 minutes ago. This time I went for cold water to wash and wet my face, also I used it for the razor(yesterday I've watcher your videos about it). There is quite a difference with cold water. There is still a bit of redness on my moustache and neck area, however it's less than the last time. And also less razor bumps on my neck this time! Moreover, cold water seems to cure tiny cuts. Honestly, every shave gets better and better. I'm knowing my face better, I better handle the razor. Next time I will try hot water for face, and cold for razor only, and maybe finally I'll use the Proraso White Line producs
For me getting the right blade took care of my irritation issues. Lord, Big Ben,Shark, and a few others gave me irritation. Those blades just didn't work well for me. Gillette razors never have me irritation though lol. But the cost of using them is what made me switch to saftey razors.
I've been shaving with cartridge razor blades for over 15 years. I stopped and switched to safety razor, and it irritated my skin. 😢
I guess I just need to get used it.
Came across Iwasaki Kamisori when researching straight razor. It is the most expensive and impressive straight razor I have seen. Then there is the Thiers-Issard Damascus steel folding straight razor. These razors are not for mere mortals.
Alum is also good for someone that has pimples. My fiance uses an alum block on her upper back by her bra line.

so i just started using DE razors and ive been having a good bit of razor burn on my neck, i guess im doing too many passes over it to get it very smoothly, i never had this happen with cartridge razors tho..guess everyones skin is different

May I also ask people, 1, can changing your DE razor to a different DE razor cause skin irritation, and 2, can badger shaving brushes/any shaving brushes irritate the skin? I have sensitive skin but it’s sensitive to any perfumes. I am also allergic to any wool products, my skin breaks out into small bumps and rash. So I’m experimenting to see why I now get irritation with my new DE razor, is it due to my skin adjusting to a new razor and/or, is it because I have started to use a shaving brush? Previously I was using Nivea shaving foam for sensitive skin from a can, applied by hand. Help please.
You have a lot of variables there. You need to do a process of elimination and see what works best for you.

I'm for a week shaving with a safety razor and I dont think its working for me. My skin gets red, irritated. If I dont put a little pressure, the razor dont cut the hairs, but with the pressure I get some cuts, a lot of little blood points around the mustache and chin. I tried two different brands of blades but no better results. I'm doing something wrong? With the cartrige I dont have this irritation.
keep at it! try different blades, different razors (open, closed, slant), different prep. try merkur 34c, astra and feather blades and arko soap. don't quit
Yeah, it sounds like you need a different de blade and some slicker soap. Check out a company called "Stirling". They make some of the thickest, slickest, lathers out there. When I first got into wet shaving I ended up getting the "smoothest" blades based on charts that I saw and that was a huge mistake for my skin. I ended up with some blades called "Derby" and they were horrible for me. My skin is on the sensitive side but my hair is coarse, so I had a rough time and gave up on wet shaving for 5 years. I'm back at it now, and I still get a little irritation but things are much better than before. I find a soap causes me more irritation Geo than say a sensitive shave cream - TOBS for example my main cause of irritation though is having to clean up or buff up areas that are still showing signs of whisker growth having said that an excellent video mate :-D
