It took me nearly a year of practice and a lot of small cuts, but I can finally achieve a clean shave in two passes, with and against the grain. I honestly learned a lot from watching Geo's technique in videos like this one. One piece of advice I would give about using a DE safety razor is that less is more. I might not get every little piece of hair going against the grain, but being conservative helps me set up my next shave, usually 3 days later, and avoid irritation.

    • @TraumaER
      @TraumaER Год назад +2

@@jahoopyjaheepu497 for me it wasn't worth it because I don't want any irritation ever. I shave once with the grain and if I miss something, I miss something. Shaving too much ages the skin IMO.

Get a blade sample pack so you can see what works for you. Lots of good starter options for razors don't have to pay a lot for a really nice shave. Shave on man and screw gillette lol

R41 is very efficient. I just switched to wet shaving after 4 decades of cartridges, which sometimes gave me skin rashes on my neck. Started with Muhle r89, but found it to be a little lacking on the aggressiveness side. Switched to r41 after 2 shaves and I found it to be exactly what I was looking for - smooth, close shave with 1 pass, minimal pressure applied. Since I am new to the world of wet shaving, I am really careful and so far the nicks were minimal. However, I would not do against the grain due to easily irritated skin on my neck, but it is not needed for me.
I wish I would have discovered my dad's way of shaving 30 years ago - there is absolutely no skin irritation after I shave anymore and after the initial cost of purchasing the hardware, costs are minimal. Most importantly, I look forward to shaving now, instead of hating it and putting it off for a day or two just to avoid it during the cartridge days. Never knew shaving could be pleasurable...

Received my new Muhle R41 razor in the mail yesterday and just finished a late Friday afternoon shave listening to some AC/DC, but remained cool and calm.....
Taking it very slow and easy with my new friend, I completed a two pass shave with zero nicks or cuts and honestly could have stopped after the first pass, but out of pure habit, cleaned up with a second pass...The result was The Best Shave for me ever. I used the Muhle blade that came with the razor, and was very impressed with it as well. But I will use a Feather for my next shave and see what difference I experience....
Once again, Shave Nation customer service is second to none.

Hey Geo! That was one KILLER shave, if I may say so! For one of your next vids, I’d like to see you demonstrate shavettes (half DE blade and Feather AC, specifically) and a traditional straight with Captain’s Choice shaving cream (the soft one, ofc). That’d be a treat to see!:)

I usually shave after taking a shower. The effect is very obvious. I don't have many beards, only under the nose and chin. My beards are of the hard type. I shave backwards, just like the gentleman in the video. I shave backwards twice to be clean, and then see if there is anything that I haven’t shave. I have tried a lot of straight shaves, but the effect is not obvious.

No one really ever showed me how to shave and I have always done one-pass against the grain since about 15. To be honest, I dry shaved for years due to my light growth. 20 years later I still don't have much facial hair but I have started wet-shaving with a safety razor. I've been trying the whole three-pass thing and it's been great. The thing is I decided to do a one-pass against the grain with two days of growth and it ended up being just as good as my three-pass shaves. I didn't feel much tugging or blade irritation, have any pain, with a normal alum block feeling post-shave, and we will see if I get any ingrown hairs. I think I will stop doing a three-pass and stick with my one-pass against the grain. I dunno, we'll see...

I cringe merely thinking about going against the grain on the mustache in that fashion. Well done.

    I went from R89 + Feather blade
    to
    R41 + Astra SP
Not enough hair :D Did it in 1 pass though. PRE-Shave is a must, as is styptic pencil.
Few "weepers", usual places I get them with my "old" Cartridge razors. Little irritation.
Me likey, but it is a beast to be wary of. You cant shave the same way with the two razors. Having got used to the R89, it will take a few shaves with the R41 I think. I bought the "Twist".

I'm sensing a Monty Python skit.
"In our day, we would only shave a single pass against the grain."
"That's right, and we didn't have any fancy preshave oil."
"Preshave oil?! We didn't even have shaving cream. We had to use leftover bacon grease."
"Luxury! We couldn't afford bacon. We just wet our face with water and went straight in with the razor."
"Well, you were lucky to have a razor. We had to shave our wet unlubricated beard with a rusty nail."
    "At least you had water!...."

I’ve been thinking about trying this. Because of the way my beard and face is contoured, where my checks and chin meet. I typically do an across the grain pass because doing an wtg and xtg passes doesn’t do anything more. After the xtg pass it’s still not very close in that area. It’s even difficult to get bbs after the atg pass. The aggressiveness of the razor doesn’t matter much whether it’s a R41, Variant, 37c, or 6c. So I’ve been contemplating doing this with a possible clean up after.

Could you try the Alpha Outlaw Safety Razor and compare it to the Muhle R41? The Outlaw's selling point is being a mild aggressive one-pass shave razor. I have tried the Outlaw, it is great.
