50M and I couldn't figure out why this razor wasn't working for me. I had no idea (and Henson doesn't tell us) that you need to take three passes. I was doing one pass and wondering why I felt like I had a five-o'clock shadow.
I bought my henson a few months back, best razor I have ever used! Literally you can't feel the blade at all..... And gives the closest shave. Feels almost impossible to cut yourself. And the quality is second to none. Machined to such precise tolerance.... No movement or play, and the blade when put into the top cap can't move like it can on pins. So no chance at all of anything other than a perfect reveal. Literally this razor is perfect in every way. The only thing that takes a little getting used to is its so light being machined aluminium, but after a few Shaves you just get used to it.
Jumped in with the Henson AL13. One thing I was doing incorrectly was not tightening the handle enough so that the blade sat properly. Before, I was getting too many nics and cuts .. Once I tightened it properly it was all good

I got one of these recently. It has become my favorite, but you need the right blades. The Astra blades they include are really great. I also like it with Mühle blades.
I bought one of these recently. Been using it for about 2 months. I usually dry shave, and this is perfect.... and it will get your no-no bits smooth as eggs without major bleeding in the shower. When I can't use my Bismarck No 2 I use this. My only gripe is I want an etched edge that says 1 or 2. I'll probably etch it in myself.
@geofatboy I’ve been using an AL13 for about one month now. In my opinion it performs far better than the Merkur I had been using. The Henson is so effective that when I’m in a rush I can actually skip lathering up; just as long as I keep my face wet I can shave with the Henson without shaving soap or cream with no problems (if I try that with the Merkur I get skin irritation).
Thanks for sharing. I'm impressed with the design, I wonder why someone didn't think of it sooner. I was thinking this is a great razor for beginners, but also great for people who are traveling or on the run. It probably helps limit simple mistakes.

Henson was smart to choose the Astra's. Very high quality, economical blades. They say you can use any brand blade, but they designed it around the Astra's. I have the Leaf/Twig combo and I like it a lot. But I see myself buying a Henson. I really like the overall looks and design of the AL13.
I’m about a week into shaving with my new Henson AL13+ (mild), and there has been quite a learning curve. The first couple of times were quite bloody. Maybe also because I don’t have my shaving soap game down yet. Only when I went back to Gillette gel did I manage not to make a bloody mess, and, equally important, not to constantly clog up the razor. I had to loosen it and violently shake it in the sink 7-10 times during one shave. Prohibitively annoying ... Besides the gel instead of soap, I’m not quite sure what I do differently but I have probably just gotten a better feel of the razor and gotten better at not applying pressure. It must be said that I am quite literally thin-skinned. A change in diet has improved it somewhat, but I still cut myself rather easily. However, I am now down to not having more cuts with the Henson compared to the Mach3. In fact, I have fewer micro cuts, but then still some bigger ones on the neck. So all in all, I don’t see myself going back to the Mach3. The jury’s is out on whether I’ll stick to gel or invest more time in learning the soap game. And in a better brush - I find the stiff wild boar one that I got for practice uncomfortable. So to all DE novices: Don’t give up! You *will* get better, and it *is* nice to shave with a proper, durable tool instead of a plastic device, and I am in fact looking forward to each shave now!
Hey how's your shaving going now? I experience same, with the mild and ++ version. I though it's gone be much easier, but I cut myself badly all the time. Henson advertises no drama, but it is more than drama with the blade, its bloody drama.
@ Unfortunately, not too good. I still cut my self way too much with the Henson, so I now mix it with the Mach3, using that on the most sensitive spots.

Hi Geo- Great shave and razor review; thank you! This is a nice-looking razor. I hope you have a great weekend. Take good care and be safe and be well. Best regards, as always, Geo!
I just got one after never using a safety razor. Such a nice shave and no razor burn. I’m a little scared to go against the grain as I haven’t gotten the technique down but even just two passes with the grain and across is a great shave. But the areas I have tried against the grain it’s like I never had facial hair there for at least a full day
I have one of these. It's just as good as my Merkur Futur but it's so light it just glides like there's nothing there. The reveal is so small I do find it can be a little tricky to get the angle right, but it's certainly not a problem. It's expensive but definitely worth it.
Great review Got the AL13 medium myself. Very easy to use, very forgiving and ideal for those new to DE shaving. Just wish they were easier to buy here in the UK as I would love to get my hands on the titanium version.

If anyone read my comments re WONDERING WHY MINE LOOKS DIFFERENT THAN ALL THE PROMOTIONAL IMAGES etc, I got a reply from Henson: This is because we recently added enhancements to our razor. If you look closely at some of your images, you can see this little piece of material. It does not at all affect the actual aggressiveness of the razor. We hope this makes sense! I will attach the full list of our enhancements below that if comparing you can see visually are different as well. ______________ The design team weighed both customer feedback and test results, to introduce several enhancements to both the AL13 and Ti22 razors. Increased grip The overall diameter of the handle has been increased by 0.010”. Also, the textured portions of the handle have been made more pronounced. Both of these changes improve overall grip and handling of the razor. Reshaped channels The lather channels in the baseplate have been reshaped and the centre webs of the lather slots have removed, resulting in improved hair and lather evacuation. Softened edges and added bevels The edges of the baseplate and top cap have been softened in an effort to reduce any unwanted sharpness from the outer edges and corners of the razor head. Also, a large bevel has been added to the outer corners of the razor head. These changes improve comfort, control, and precision during shaving, especially when maneuvering around obstacles, such as next to the nose and mouth. Removed end posts The small posts at the ends of the blade gap have been removed from the baseplate. One resulting benefit of this is that the very ends of the razor blades edge are able to perform better. Also, since the shape of the lather channel is now completely through the razor head, rinsing of the razor is improved. Added razor head grip Indents have been added at the ends of the razor head to assist with gripping the head for assembly and disassembly for blade changes, cleaning, etc. Chip groove A small notch has been added to the top of the top cap threaded post to help keep the threads clean and free of debris. All the best, Danyel Henson Shaving
Hello Geo! Great that you tried the Henson, I bought one about 2 months ago, at first I was ‘meh..it’s ok’ (slant bars are my usual ‘go to’ razors) but I persisted with it and now, man I love it!! Really great one pass shaves, comfortable and no irritation. I have one small issue, I really wanted the medium or more aggressive one, but couldn’t find it on the companies website so bought the mild one…when I enquired later they said something like ‘yeah we had a lot of mild stock to move, so to buy the other one you have to drill down in this other part of their website to find the med version’…almost like they wanted to direct customers towards the mild one and hid the med version….Kinda disappointed as I didn’t really get what I wanted. Might have to buy the med one from you Geo!!!
@@gmy33 yeah it kinda sucks, but the good news is it’s a really great razor (after a bit of a learning curve) even the mild one performs well on 3-4 day stubble. Definitely pairs well with Astra blades. Overall I’m very happy.
FYI, while watching this video there was a commercial By the Company that makes that razor. Kind of interesting the problem is people might order through them or not you and you will lose business just want to let you know love the videos thank you
I bought this 2 months ago, my first DE after 30 years using a twin blade cartridge. Good shave WTG, very good XTG, but ATG to get BBS, I end up with tons of weepers, mostly above and below the mouth. Your review makes it look so easy! Not sure if it's my cream, my blades (I've tried several though), my technique as a noob, or what.
I got the mild version and it's the cleanest shave I've ever had. Using Shark Platinums. I sort of wish I got the medium after watching reviews, but honestly I doubt it'd be that big of a difference. I'm the type of person to buff regardless. Maybe if Henson ever does a limited edition color I really like! For now I'll keep using it along side my La Criatura.
Amazing review! I bought the mild version, which also provides a close shave. Although it’s almost impossible to cut yourself with this razor I still get irritation because of my extremely sensitive skin. Greetings from Europe
I also want to add, if you're skin is sensitive DO NOT SHAVE AGAINST THE GRAIN. Or if you have really angled hair follicles. I can't shave against the grain because it'll cut my skin all up.
@@CruelSun69 Thanks for the shaving tip! I suffer from pretty bad razor burn especially on my neck, so any tips are greatly appreciated, (been shaving for years) Even doing just 1 pass irritates my skin, and that's why I was looking into the henson. Thanks again. 👍🏾
I literally googled this video bc I love the Henson razor but I WAS cutting myself and I had to figure out that I didn’t really know how to shave properly with a single blade razor This is a great tutorial! Is this how you normally shave? 3 passes First one with grain, north to south Second one across the grain Last one against the grain
Interesting to me that more companies are getting into the wet shave razor business, Hanson, Parker, ikon, so many mor options daily! And all are after a better shave experience for new or beginner shavers. So Geo to keep this easy could you do a video on comparing the sharpness of different popular blades? From Feather down? Thanks for posting this video!
Great shave and demo Geo💈💈 Nice looking razor, auto angle head should help some folks. TOBS is always a good choice. Hard to beat the T3 brush for the price. Nice clean no issue shave today, perfect. Great video and review, thanks. Enjoy!
Mine doesn't say just *AL 13* or *AL 13 MEDIUM,* it says *_AL 13 EN_* 😥 Wish i had known that there was an option for course hair b4 i bought it... oh well... We'll see soon! i bought one a while back - had my 1st shave with it today (i've never really used safety razors before, only tried once or twice - never liked them) - I liked it! (i used to use, exclusively the highest quality electrics but when my last one broke, i switched to disposables...mid range ones).... I feel like there will be a small learning curve, for me, with the Henson (especially since the angle in the mirror etc is a bit different to the thin heads i was used to. It seemed to be better where i left my face alone (NOT stretching the skin)....but i am not sure - it was at the very least just as good as my disposables. (Reminder - on my 1st time using).... [EDIT, i think mine is the standard (not medium) - i just noticed mine looks a bit different! - Mine is ONE "+", under the top/head-plate, yet it's one of the models with the wide gap 🤔🤔?? ]
I use a Gillette MkIII and go through one blade about every 4-6 months. The problem is that people don't know how to take care of their razors. After shaving just rinse everything from the blades then run the blades crossways through the piles of a towel to dry them completely. Store your razor in a drawer where moisture won't get to it. It is the moisture that corrodes the edge of the blade and makes it dull. .
Bought a Henson shaver and I love shaving with it. A well-made product, have not cut myself while shaving. The price of blades has gone down considerably, will never use a Gillette shaver again.
I like it I would really like to try to especially for my first DE since I was 17 or so but the price is a tad prohibitive at least for me. So I will most likely end up going with the Edwin Jagger DE89
Which of the two models are you shaving with. The Astra blades are known to be very sharp, it would be better if you shaved with same blade say for the sixth time.
I use and am happy with a Rockwell 3 head razor - I prefer it on #3 setting. Which Henson razor do you think matches the #3 Rockwell setting I prefer - the mild or the medium? Thanks.
Could you provide full disclosure ? Were you compensated for this review or partnered with Henson in anyway ? I mean I just got mine today so not that big a deal but I'm used to Cartridge razors proglide but as my hair gets greyer it get courser on my face so i am interested in trying it.
I got one a few weeks ago. It's my first safety razor and it definitely feels way different from my old Gillette razor. I'm still experimenting with different brand blades to find something that doesn't nick me.
My Vikings adjustable tears my face up no matter what blade I use. I’m only willing to try one more safety razor before just going back to cartridges. Opinion between this and maybe a Mekur 34c (which I’m told is the gold standard)?

The overall diameter of the handle has been increased by 0.010”. Also, the textured portions of the handle have been made more pronounced. Both of these changes improve overall grip and handling of the razor.
Reshaped channels
The lather channels in the baseplate have been reshaped and the centre webs of the lather slots have removed, resulting in improved hair and lather evacuation.
Softened edges and added bevels
The edges of the baseplate and top cap have been softened in an effort to reduce any unwanted sharpness from the outer edges and corners of the razor head. Also, a large bevel has been added to the outer corners of the razor head. These changes improve comfort, control, and precision during shaving, especially when maneuvering around obstacles, such as next to the nose and mouth.
Removed end posts
The small posts at the ends of the blade gap have been removed from the baseplate. One resulting benefit of this is that the very ends of the razor blades edge are able to perform better. Also, since the shape of the lather channel is now completely through the razor head, rinsing of the razor is improved.
Added razor head grip
Indents have been added at the ends of the razor head to assist with gripping the head for assembly and disassembly for blade changes, cleaning, etc.
Chip groove
A small notch has been added to the top of the top cap threaded post to help keep the threads clean and free of debris.
All the best,
Danyel
Henson Shaving
It's quite the laundry list!
Hi bro. Please make a video on comparision between hension AL13 razor and king c Gillette.
Thanks Pat!
Hi Castor- Sorry that you were unable to get the one you really wanted. If you decide to go for it: bit.ly/HensonAL13RazorSN
That kind of sucks .. and is not customer friendly .. its an expensive razor . You should be able to get what you want
Kind of interesting the problem is people might order through them or not you and you will lose business just want to let you know love the videos thank you
That happens to me all the time.. It all comes out in the wash. They are paying for those ads as well. I put these videos up for free!
If you buy from Henson you have to pay S/H which was like $10 to my area. Free S/H from Geo if over $65.
Get a few more shaves under your belt and I bet your shave improves!
Agreed-Thanks!
Damn man and I thought I had sensitive skin. how long have you been shaving?
I also want to add, if you're skin is sensitive DO NOT SHAVE AGAINST THE GRAIN. Or if you have really angled hair follicles. I can't shave against the grain because it'll cut my skin all up.
@@CruelSun69 Thanks for the shaving tip! I suffer from pretty bad razor burn especially on my neck, so any tips are greatly appreciated, (been shaving for years) Even doing just 1 pass irritates my skin, and that's why I was looking into the henson. Thanks again. 👍🏾
I literally googled this video bc I love the Henson razor but I WAS cutting myself and I had to figure out that I didn’t really know how to shave properly with a single blade razor
This is a great tutorial!
Is this how you normally shave?
3 passes
First one with grain, north to south
Second one across the grain
Last one against the grain
Wow, you are a really really good shaver. I'm 54 and never heard north to south or across the grain before lol. Bravo!
Thank you sir I just ordered the mild version off your site. I will probably end up getting the medium version also soon
Yeah I'm going to buy this, I just don't know if I want the blue, black or tan. I wish I could see those side by side.
That one's your call!
Thanks for your recommendation Bryan!
I have the Medium from ShaveNation. It's my favorite. I like it more than my Feather AS-D2. Just find that angle and off comes the beard.
Thanks for sharing Jimi!
@@geofatboy You're welcome. I love your vids. Any chance you guys will be getting in the Titanium version?
Thank you Geo. Positive or negative exposure¿?
Blade reveal?
Geo you is national treasure my guy keep up the good work 👍💯
Big Ups Ty!!!!💪
Great shave and demo Geo💈💈 Nice looking razor, auto angle head should help some folks. TOBS is always a good choice. Hard to beat the T3 brush for the price. Nice clean no issue shave today, perfect. Great video and review, thanks. Enjoy!
Thanks Terry! This razor kind of makes it a no-brainer!
Geo appreciate you brother. Learned to shave from you years ago.
i bought this. its coming in today! cant wait to shave with it!
So, how'd it go?
@@geofatboy perfect shave for me smooth and no irritation
This looks great! Do you think this would be good to shave your head with?
Yes, definitely
Check out Mark Szorady's head shave video using the Henson Mild.
Great video. But someone who almost always has "designer stubble" I can't imagine shaving three times. Ouch! Maybe this razor is for me?
Great review!
Thanks!
I recently bought feather popular razor how is it sir I'll try
Here you go: ruclips.net/video/CyLy-uXuut4/видео.html
Man you are a fantastic salesman. Probably about to buy this.
No problem getting close under the nose? That’s why I love my stainless Feather but I’ve been interested in this shaver for a while.
It's a beaut!
What razor is best for women bodyshaving? Thank you
A Mild Henson: bit.ly/HensonAL13RazorSN
Or a Feather: bit.ly/FeatherASD2SRazorandStandSN
High Proof Razor is probably your best bet for body shaving. I am gonna tell you upfront though its 120 dollars.
Very very cool razor good stuff I think so.
Yes!
@@geofatboy Enjoy the shave Man
Mine doesn't say just *AL 13* or *AL 13 MEDIUM,* it says *_AL 13 EN_* 😥 Wish i had known that there was an option for course hair b4 i bought it...
Ive been having problems shaving my neck. Its like the grains grow in 4 directions all at once. Lol might have to try a pre shave
Do you always shave 3 times in a row ?
Very nice, great to see something new, looks like a really nice razor, thank you Geo
My pleasure!
I really want to try the Ti version!
When will you try our a Wolfman or a PILS?
They are having trouble keeping us supplied...
@@geofatboy oh sad to hear 😔 . Hate it when companies aren’t open to let people review things.
Which would be the pick for a teenage boy, this or a Leaf Twig?
This: bit.ly/HensonAL13RazorSN
Beautiful shave and Razor Uncle Geo ✌️✌️
Love it! Thanks!
It is the moisture that corrodes the edge of the blade and makes it dull. .
Great review
More nice work again.
Thanks Kewei!
I am used to a slightly more weighty handle, i have the old-style Wilkinson Sword razor. Will I be disappointed by the lighter weight handle?
Bought a Henson shaver and I love shaving with it. A well-made product, have not cut myself while shaving. The price of blades has gone down considerably, will never use a Gillette shaver again.
Would you recommend or do you know of a better shaver ?
why the second lather…seems very time consuming. any reason to not just do both directions with the one lather?
Wow! That's an interesting razor, made more interesting by our shaving hero Geo! God bless you. Regards, Dr. Basu( India)
Ha Ha! Good one!
@@geofatboy ❤️😀
I like it I would really like to try to especially for my first DE since I was 17 or so but the price is a tad prohibitive at least for me. So I will most likely end up going with the Edwin Jagger DE89
A very popular razor!
Great review, thanks.
So how does it compare to the Mühle Rocca? From the inside the head design looks kind of similar to me...
Rocca is heavier and more aggressive shaving.
@@geofatboy thanks man, I got an advertisement for the Henson shown in your video. I already have the R89, R41 and the Rocca and was wondering...
Replacing my merkur 180 long handle with this.
If you leave the blade in will it stain?
Which of the two models are you shaving with. The Astra blades are known to be very sharp, it would be better if you shaved with same blade say for the sixth time.
What is better a merkur 29c or this razor?
Better than Wilkinson sword classic? ( One with "butterfly" opening)
Hey have you ever used the yaqi katana single edge razor its really good!! For me at least lolz
Have not... yet
Thumbs up for Geo 👍👍💪🏻
Thanks Amir!
I use and am happy with a Rockwell 3 head razor - I prefer it on #3 setting. Which Henson razor do you think matches the #3 Rockwell setting I prefer - the mild or the medium? Thanks.
This or rockwell 6S? Can anybody tell me if they have tried either of this shaves.
Hi Geo,
Are you going to have the Henson AL13 in Aircraft Aluminum back in stock?
Best regards!
shavenation.com/products/henson-al13-safety-razor-mild-or-medium
Could you provide full disclosure ? Were you compensated for this review or partnered with Henson in anyway ? I mean I just got mine today so not that big a deal but I'm used to Cartridge razors proglide but as my hair gets greyer it get courser on my face so i am interested in trying it.
I got one a few weeks ago. It's my first safety razor and it definitely feels way different from my old Gillette razor. I'm still experimenting with different brand blades to find something that doesn't nick me.
and? do you still like it? found better ones?
@@ohnewerbung9601 I still use it and like it.
My Vikings adjustable tears my face up no matter what blade I use. I’m only willing to try one more safety razor before just going back to cartridges. Opinion between this and maybe a Mekur 34c (which I’m told is the gold standard)?
Either will work but the Henson is the safer bet that you won't get nicked! bit.ly/HensonAL13RazorSN
To the people who used it and used it downstairs, is it good ? No cuts and a clean shave?
For a man with a beard I'm looking for a really good recommendation for a razor single blade to maintain my neckline and shaving my mustache off. What do you recommend?
