    I have the medium version and I would say that if you want to do a daily shave and go against the grain then it is too aggressive, at least with the blades I have tried (Feather and Bic Chrome Platinum, both known for being very sharp). The original mild version should be fine. I shouldn't have listened to some people saying that it was too mild. Even if I use a foil shaver for the first pass then go against the grain with the medium it is too much. And the only way to get BBS shave is to go against the grain. So I would recommend starting with the mild version for most people who want a daily shave against the grain with sharp blades. I have used it on and off for nearly 2 years so this isn't a one shave review either.

    I received the Al13-Medium and did my first shave today. It was surprisingly good-more aggressive and efficient than the mild AL13. It removed more hair on the first pass, required fewer passes overall and didn't need multiple strokes per area. There was no discomfort and it felt just as smooth as the AL13. The end result was noticeably better. I will continue using it as my daily driver to test it out further.
    I'm now also considering trying the AL13-Aggressive, which is only available at boutique stores and not directly on Henson's website, to see how it compares.

    A very well designed and well built razor that I just can't seem to get a good shave from. I've tried both the ++ and the +++, and they both failed to give me a clean close shave in one pass. Razors that can, are the Blackbird, Lupo .72, Yaqi Romulus, and Ever Ready Streamline. But the Henson is a three pass razor, and I am a one pass shaver. The Henson is a good razor that simply does not suit my shaving needs. So it goes.

    In the case of Rockwell, you could change the base plates (safety bars) and the top cap would be the same. But, Hanson says that it can't be done with their products, because the top cap is not universal, there is a top cap for each type of razor, you can't use one top cap and just change base plates, it simply doesn't fit (the top cap).
    Your 'playing on the beard' is genius. Yes, we could hear the sound difference between the different lengths of the beard.

    • @geofatboy

      Agreed on the Henson since the angle and design varies from mild to medium to aggressive. I'm glad you were able to pick up the subtle sound differences in the amount of stubble remaining after the shave with each razor.

    The medium and aggressive are really close in their sounds. Seems like the aggressive is just a notch more efficient than the medium. However, the difference between medium and mild is very noticeable. I have the mild but I am getting the medium now. The mild is not a bad razor at all but I find myself needing to do multiple strokes on each area during each pass. That is leading to many nicks as I am taking off more and more skin with each stroke. So, medium seems like the better choice. I was thinking of getting a Rockwell over the Henson but the Henson is just so intuitive. Henson is basically a safety razor with the ease of use of a cartridge razor. I don't have to think much when using the Henson.

      I'm currently testing both the mild and medium AL13. I find the medium more efficient and it cleans up better than the mild, but I'm curious how the aggressive AL13 would compare for daily face shaving. Wondering if you had any insights?

    • @kaister901
      @kaister901 Месяц назад +1

      @@LearningAndGrowingInLife Yea, I agree the medium is more efficient. Which I was I switched to it.
      I have not gotten the aggressive. So, I can't say much about it. For me the medium is perfect.
      Personally, I think aggressive is just more efficiency but with a slightly higher risk of nicks. Maybe, it is for people with very dense hair growth that the medium would struggle to get through.

  • @borbetomagus
    @borbetomagus 8 месяцев назад +2

    Thanks for the comparison. Nice razor, quite comfortable for all skill levels, but I sorta wish Henson offered a '++++' for even more efficiency.
    Just wondering (at 9m38s). Why do you suggest using a mild razor on later parts of a shave? Is it to give your face a rest from the earlier trauma? It would seem using a mild, less-efficient razor at this stage might encourage using more pressure and risking razor burn. Perhaps one would need to use the most aggressive option (used very gently) to clear out any persistent beard stubble, instead of doing a 'pick-up pass' at the very end. Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas!

      I've never understood going milder on subsequent passes. You're trying to pick up wht was missed, so going milder seems counter-intuitive. With an adjustable, if I change the settings on subsequent passes, I go up, not down. Keep it clean, oil it, and don't tighten it too much!

    I have a Ti-22 + Would you consider it equal to the A-13 ++ in aggression? I've always wondered. Thanks in advance.

      The heftier weight might just kick it up into the next category with the AL 13 ++

    I grow on my neck and mustache more then my face! face grows in thin and patchy! so the scend one would be good for me! And what crazy is that am 36 and can't grow a normal looking beard like u always grow in patchy

      It's quite common for beardage to grow more or less in different areas of the face. No need to feel like the Lone Ranger!

    Is it glue holding the blades to the paper wrapper? I always thought it was just a few drops of hot wax that then hardens and acts as an adhesive.

    • @borbetomagus
      @borbetomagus 8 месяцев назад

      And why do some blade manufactures do this??? The blades are already snugly enclosed in a form fitting box.

      @@borbetomagus I have heard it is to eliminate even the slight movement of blade against paper, as that, over time, can reduce the blade's sharpness. Given how far they travel to get to us, and, with some of us, how often they sit in a drawer that is regularly opened and closed before being used, that could be a lot of rubbing.

      @@keithosmond5730After opening a fresh Feather blade, your explanation seems most likely as the edge from the glued/waxed blade is secured about 1-2mm from the edges of the folded wax paper wrapper. I wonder if the glue/wax residue issue could be removed if Feather made a multi-square 'S' cut in the wax paper wrapper and threading the separate halves of the paper cuts through the center cavity of the blade. Just hold blade on edges after unwrapping and pull up to unthread. A singular 'S' cut would probably fail since the blade could rotate in transit allowing opposing corner edges to touch the wrapper. Still, my 'solution' would involve is a lot more cost than the current working option.

      Either or... In my opinion both are annoying and increase the chances of cutting yourself when removing the blade from the paper...

    Hey Geo! Would you pick the Henson over the Merkur 34C if you had to pick one?

      Thanks for your input. I've bought several razors just exploring. The Twig, Merkur Futr and Weshi. I always end up going back to old faithful Merkur 34C.@@geofatboy
