I googled it and it said most pharmacies can supply you with a tiny container free of charge to deposit your blades and then when it's full, duct tape the slot and give it back to them. That's cool!

Tryablade and Razorbladesclub offer pre-made sampler packs based on differing criteria. One can also make their own sampler pack by choosing as many of the blades they offer. Currently Tryablade offer 92 double-edge razor blades and Razorbladesclub offer 113 different double-edge razor blades. In addition to any beginner samplers, two blades worth considering are Gillette 'Nacet' and Treet 'Platinum'.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that it took me quite a while to get used to the spring in the pivoting head of the Leaf razor (coming from the butterfly). Because the metal is obviously heavier than plastic pivoting heads (if you're switching from a 'normal' plastic razor), it's got a heavy spring to it. I didn't enjoy that when I first started using it, I'm more used it now though! So keep an eye out for that if you choose to pick one up :)

Happened to come across a butterfly safety razor at my local dollar store. A year later, there's minimal rust and it still works just as great as day one. Blades are stupid cheap, it's easy to clean, and now that I know how to use it I don't cut myself often (the common place I do is by the ankles so I'm just extra careful then). For anyone considering making the switch, I highly recommend safety razors.

I really love my leaf razor. I got my boyfriend onto safety razors years ago but wanted something more familiar for myself. Leaf was exactly what I was looking for. I do have to use less pressure than a plastic razor but the shave is close and it’s a great investment. As far as the safety of cleaning it, there are magnets to hold the blades in place so I’ve never had mine fall out. Either way they are both great sustainable options

I’m one of those people who just can’t use a safety razor (I got myself WAY too much) so for the past 2 years, I’ve been shipping my used razor heads to terracycle’s gillette razor recycling program! using a safety razor is of course ideal, but it’s nice to know there are eco friendly alternatives to people who aren’t great at using them.

One of your previous videos actually convinced me to switch from my schick intuition to a safety razor and omg I'm so glad I did bc its so much easier to work with, I get a much closer shave, and the blades are *WAY* cheaper than the replaceable heads. I'm still getting the hang of it in some parts (like at my ankle), but I really like it and am glad you recommended them to me!

I find that taking the time sitting in the bath (obvs not full, just not busy with showering!) is a good way to get familiar with the safety razor! Hair grows in so many directions so you can really be gentle and take your time, pulling the skin if it needs.
I have definitely only cut myself once and that was on the top of my foot - wouldn't have happened if I wasn't just bashing through it in the shower haha. It's tricky and I don't trust myself *everywhere* yet but it's so worth it

I have a 3 piece razor and the shorten handle was weird to me at first but I got used to it very fast. I really like the close shave, how you can use different blades without having to buy a whole new system like you would switching brands between Gillette and something else. It also has given me fewer issues with sensitive areas and is overall just easier. I think the switch was well worth it, and the price for new blades is definitely a bonus. They are so cheap!

I bought a safety razor a few years ago and I do still use it for those "left it to grow for too long and now it's a forest" areas. But I ended up going back to dollar shave club for my legs and pits because I was cutting myself every time I shaved. I really want to cut that waste out which is why I've been interested in leaf but it's also SUPER expensive. idk, maybe I should try working with the safety razor again before investing in a $100 razor that I might not even like. Meanwhile I have enough DSC heads to last another year (I reduced the frequency of the subscription when I realized how many I had.)

I've had my Leaf Razor for close to two years now and have used it with the silicone sleeve for half a year now. The products are great. Because the LR is designed for a mild shave and sometimes I want something sharper, I recently purchased the Leaf Thorn Razor (a more aggressive cut than the Leaf Twig Razor), which is a safety razor that only uses a SE blade. I love this design because I don't understand the rationale of the traditional DE blade safety razor. When an edge isn't being used, I prefer having a 0% risk of cutting myself on that edge.
Anyway, I appreciate the detailed breakdown!

I’m so happy I switched to safety razors! Such a better shave than plastic. I have the VikingsBlade Godfather safety razor from Amazon and I’ve never cut myself and I shave everything. (I know Amazon isn’t the best but I needed affordable/accessible). was worried the non pivoting head would be challenging but it wasn’t a big deal for me. I use Astra blades. I’m curious about trying the Twig model from Leaf Shave for intimate areas though as the head can be a tight squeeze at times. But it does work just fine; it just takes a bit more time than plastic used to. My legs take just the same amount if time. That’s my recommendation if anyone cares lol! I keep my used razors in Altoids tins until I can recycle them. I was sure Id end up buying the Leaf but I don’t find it necessary for myself.

This is such a helpful and thorough video! You are great at observing and explaining the small stuff that we all experience with products we love/hate but can't always verbalize. I've been looking into both these options because I'm (finally!) almost done with my last disposable plastic head from a bulk pack I bought years ago. Now next time I shave I'll pay extra attention to my handle length/grip, how much I rinse the blades, and the angle I'm most comfortable shaving at...then I'll have my answer of which style will be best for me :)

  • @Kelbel5995

I was terrifieddddd of a safety razor before I bought mine. I also self-identify as a klutz and was really worried about cutting myself. Granted, I've only shaved once with it but I LOVE it so far. I didn't cut myself at all and it was pretty intuitive to use. It took longer because I was going slow, so that's the only drawback so far. I too was sort of intimidated by all the options and ended up going with the Twig from the Leaf company (not affiliated in any way, just a random commenter). The Twig has a sort of twist handle that makes the top part of the head rise up so you can slide the blade in. (Really glad I didn't go with the original Leaf now, because I'm 110% sure I would cut my fingers on that.) I've heard that safety razors are also gentler on the skin/cause fewer ingrown hairs, so I'm really hoping it lives up to that promise in the future.

I had trouble traveling with my razor once and it was a bit annoying since it took some time for them to find the razor in my bag and I had to put everything out.. I think this does not happen with a "normal" razor. So I would not really recommend traveling with the blade inside and since I think you can not buy one blade you maybe have trouble going back with the new bought package as well if you do not give it away. But this was just my expirience :) beside that I love it too

First off I am a CIS Male but I have a nonbinary AFAB partner that I helped with switching to DE. I assume this is an inclusive community.
I have experience with Twist Top Off or Butterfly razors but I started with 3 piece razors which are the best travel razors imo. Two peice is like 3 piece except the handle and bottom of head is attached.
So I started DE razor shaving about 8 years ago due to shaving irritation I had from my jobs that required me to shave every other day or everyday. I had a close friend years ago, now currently my spouse, ask me about my shaving routine due to them noticing my face clearing up and in general I had less oil and razor bumps.
In time, I taught them how to use a DE on legs and underarms initially and gifted them their own long handled Butterfly razor. Years later we still use them and it has been cheaper overall. For both of us I spend maybe $30 a year after the initial upfront cost. However, I will state upfront cost for DE razors can be intimidating but worse case scenario I was able to find a DE Razor that was usable at $1 but average is $25-50 for a razor that will last at least 10 years, and 1000 blades can last about 3-10 years and cost anywhere between 3-15 cents a shave depending on how often you use.

i really needed this comparison type video. i find shaving a challenge to begin with because i have thicker hair and my legs are extremely dry and prone to razor burn not matter the routine of razor shaving cream/soap, exfoliating, moisturizer, etc. i tried leaf first because i was nervous to jump straight to a butterfly type safety razor. leaf didnt work for me but i'm not sure it was a me issue not getting over the hump of getting used to the razor or the product just didnt work for me. so i went back to disposable ones for the time being with the intention to try a safety razor again and this video was helpful as i had no idea what i should be looking for when it comes to safety razors.

Unrelated but I wanted to share that I’ve been trying out the Tree Naturals conditioner bar, and it’s honestly the best bar conditioner I’ve ever tried (it’s easier to use than the BarNone conditioner, which was my previous favorite. I believe it’s also a small, black-owned business! I have long, super dry and wavy/curly hair. It works AMAZINGLY well for me 🥰

I bought a butterfly razor (basic metal wilkinson for 8€) like 2 months ago bc the leaf one was a bit too expensive for me. Shaved maybe 4 or 5 times and only cut myself once so im pretty happy with it (i dont shave too often bc i dont see the need, this might change in summer though ^^’)
Im really glad i switched and maybe some day i will invest in a leaf razor.

I am glad you and a couple other people have made videos on using safety razors... I have one, and I like it, but it has been very different from what I was used to. I actually cut myself pretty good several times with it because the weight of it was much heavier than the plastic Venus razor I was used to. And although it had a decent grip it slipped out of my hands a few times. Unfortunately, I didn't see this video prior to using my razor.

    Great Review!
I used a 2 piece safety razor for a little more than a year before I tried the twig (safety leaf razor). It took about 2 uses to adjust but overall I love it so much more! It has been easier to clean, I have not accidentally nicked myself after the adjustment period unlike the 2 piece one I used to use, It has a nice weight to it and its handle has a cone shape to it that has been amazing. They have a great warranty/return policy too so I was not too stressed about not liking it.
I bought the leaf version for my mother and have tried it too. For me, it's a great way for people to get interested in a more sustainable/cheaper than plastic razor option without giving up the mindless ease of use. Thanks for the update!

Thank you! I'm sorry he didn't love the one he tried! Finding the right tool can be such a challenge sometimes 🙈 My partner uses the butterfly razor I showed in the video (it was mine, and I was trying to convince him to switch so he took it off my hands and I invested in the Leaf for myself) and he loves it! He's also used the Leaf but prefers the butterfly one. And he uses argan oil as shave cream (though he doesn't 100% love that and is looking for a better option himself). I do know there are lots and lots of "male focused" blogs and forums that talk about safety razors that might be more helpful than I, because I haven't tried it on my face myself. I had stumbled into them when I was researching my first razor years ago and found they were very helpful. I I hope that helps somehow! xo

Something to note for all the ladies that might be interested in getting a safety razor: Pretty much all of the safety razors specifically marketed to women are rebranded private label manufactured razors, so chances are you can find the exact same razor for a lot cheaper if you're okay with it not having pastel coloured paint on it. (Look at Weishi, Baili, DS Cosmetics etc.)
Most razors are also cast from Zamak (zinc-copper alloy) that has been chrome plated. It's a decent material and will last long if you look after it, but it can fracture or chip if dropped or knocked, since cast metals are brittle like glass.
The most common breakage you'll see is the top cap's threaded post shearing clean off/having it stay behind in the handle's threads after being dropped from standing height or mishandled during shipping. Due to being cast, they can't be repaired in any way. You could replate a razor after having lost its chrome, though.
In my opinion, the most underrated (and mostly unknown to women wanting to get into using a safety razor) product range out there would be Razorock's line of 100% stainless steel safety razors. (Sold on their ItalianBarber website) They cost only slightly more (around $60 to $70) than most of the razors made of Zamak and they have none of their weaknesses. Definitely the best value for money in the wet shaving market. If you already have a razor, don't sweat it, but if you're still looking to buy one, be sure to check them out. You'd like their "super knurl" handle.
Also, one piece of advice: Wet shave. Canned foam is "dry" and filled with air that makes the experience uneven and its application doesn't prep your hair. Get some sort of brush and a shaving soap that actually lathers well. If you want vegan, PAA's CK6 formula is explosive and synthetic/horse hair brushes don't involve utilizing something from dead animals.

I would 100% buy the Leaf due to the pivoting head, but I wish they had their own take back recycling program for the blades where they get recycled, like how Albatross takes their blades back for travel cutlery. My local recycling program will take them when packaged & labeled properly - then they send them to a different facility to be sterilized and "disposed". Didn't say "recycled" :

I once thought about buying a straight razor. Although it not that large, there is a collection of women who are using the straight razor. Straight razors are super eco-friendly, there really isn't any waste involved, depending on the type of straight razor and how it's used. I know that straight razor were common for women back in the early 1900's, but then the saftey razor came along. How do straight razor women get the back of their calves? There's something I find really attractive about men who use straight razors, even though in my culture men don't shave. Women do (some) men don't, my people just love bears. Lol Part of me wants to try the straight razor, but I'm afraid my legs will end up looking like Sally's from Nightmare Before Christmas.
