Just wanted to drop this PSA here: I was plagued by a perpetual rash and razor bumps in my bikini area for as long as I started shaving there. I made the decision to have laser hair removal in most of that area, and lemme tell you guys, IT WAS A GAME CHANGER. I had this procedure done about 10 years ago, and to this day, the area is still hair-free (save for occasional strays which are much finer in texture, and do not result in any bumps or rash when I swipe them with a razor every couple of weeks). The skin is soft and smooth, and there is no more irritation while wearing swimsuits. Just make sure they use the correct laser, and you get the correct amount of sessions (mine were 6, and bought with a Groupon). Highly, highly recommended, and just a gift to my skin that keeps on giving.

@@skytimely My hair "down there" is brown/black and coarse, but for add'l info: I'm light-skinned but kinda hairy (lol I'm Greek)... I have hairy arms and legs, though the hair there is lighter in color, and not coarse. I had laser hair removal in both those areas though, and I had the same outstanding results with my legs; my arm hair is a different story, because they didn't use the best laser for hair removal. This is why I stressed how important it is to have the right laser for the job. Hope this helped.

I only shave once a month now (that is, just to achieve a smoother feel). The key to make it painless is to apply a cold compress to the area before shooting the IPL.

The few hairs that still grow are thin and not a problem and I got rid of the razor bumps on the bikini area too. I love it that I don't have to shave every 2 days like before. However, before I got IPL, I used a tea tree cream from an Australian brand that really helped with the razor bumps.

I took Isotretinoin to treat pseudofolliculitis barbae that I suffered with for years on my legs, chin, and underarms. I never hear anyone talk about using Isotretinoin to treat this; I’m so happy I found a dermatologist that suggested it as a treatment option. After 8 months of taking the medicine I was clear of any active folliculitis and had a hair removal routine that worked! Now I use an electric razor twice a week right after a shower, then use tend skin solution immediately after shaving, then every other day after. This works for now while I save up for laser hair removal. I’m relieved to see a lot of what I’m already doing is what you suggest.

Screw Laser hair removal. It’s a scam in my opinion. One it is NOT a permanent hair removal system and two it can make hair growth even worse depending on your genes which is a very common negative side effect of laser hair removal. I do what’s called electrolysis and it is the ONLY actual permanent hair removal technique and is much cheaper than laser hair removal. Please look into electrolysis instead of laser treatment. I got a bbl facial laser for rosacea on my face and it caused what is called paradoxical hypertrichosis, as I mentioned laser hair removal can do the same exact thing 😩. I ended up doing the electrolysis because it is permanent and won’t cause more hair growth like lasers do. After only two treatments on my face I’m happy with my results. I never had thick dark hair growth on my face until I got laser done on my face for rosacea, it was horrible and embarrassing because it caused so much dark thick hair on my face

the 10 Commandments for Preventing Razor Bumps & Ingrown Hairs
    1. THOU SHALT NOT USE DIRTY BLADES!
Avoid shaving with dull, over-used razor blades. And be sure to keep your slightly used tools as clean as possible. Scrub the cutting heads of your tools with soap, hot water, and rubbing alcohol to destroy bacteria. Pro Tip: even brand new blades still need to be cleaned.
    2. HONOR THY DELICATE SKIN!
Avoid too many blades! If you are prone to ingrown hairs then you don’t need 3 or more blades. More blades equal more passes causing the hair to fall beneath the skin and become ingrown. Plus, more blading the skin leads to micro cuts through which bacteria is more likely to enter and this leads to razor burn.
    3. DO NOT TAKE PREP TIME IN VAIN!
Wash or steam the skin for 2 to 3 minutes with warm water. Then apply the shaving cream leaving it on for at least 2 minutes to really soften the hair.
    4. THOU SHALT NOT GO AGAINST THE GRAIN!
Shaving against the grain (upwards) may get you a closer shave but doing so also increases ingrowns. Shave in the direction of hair growth…it’s usually downwards. Confirm this by doing a face/ body inspection to see which way your hair grows.
    5. THOU SHALT NOT PRESS!
Avoid pressing too hard on the skin with the blade. If you follow STEP #3, then a gliding, light touch is all you need. The hair stubble should literally fall away with little or no pressure from the blade. Pressing hard is the main cause of shaving irritation! Be gentle so as to prevent the hair from being cut so low that it falls beneath the top layer of skin.
    6. THOU SHALT NOT PASS, PASS, PASS!
Avoid too many quick passes with the blade. One pass per hairy area - going 1-2 inches downward at a time - will prevent ingrown hairs. Always shave like you might cause damage, not like you’re mowing the front lawn.
    7. THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT OVER SHAVING!
Avoid shaving too often. This rule is hard to follow, especially if you have to be beardless for your job…but if you are prone to ingrowns, try hair removal with electric clippers (the barber kind of clippers). The results are not super close but no one but you will know the difference. Provided your skin can handle these alternatives try waxing, depilatory, lasering or an epilator.
    8. THOU SHALT NOT CLOG!
Avoid using skin/pore clogging creams or lotions since they keep hairs from growing up. After a shave, keep your skin bare; let the tiny army breath, and allow those newly shaved, microscopic hairs to grow out just in time for the next shave. If your objective is smooth, bump-free skin following a shave or wax, then right after hair removal allow the skin to heal first. Promote healing by proper shaving techniques followed by 70% rubbing alcohol which kills any bacteria that may enter those micro cuts created from the shave and prevents the onset of razor burn. Sure your skin will be a little dry at first but this is a temporary tradeoff. Wait 2 hours then moisturize.
    9. KEEP THY SMOOTH SKIN FREE!
At least for the first day or two, try to avoid tight fitting clothing around the Adam’s apple (neck) and/or below the waistline region. Newly shaved hair follicles need room to grow up.
    10. REMEMBER TO EXFOLIATE!
Whether you shave, sugar, wax or epilate, not enough exfoliation to remove excess layers of skin can lead to ingrown hairs. There are two types: chemical exfoliation (AHA, BHAs) and physical exfoliation (beads, coffee scrubs, gloves, brushes). Physical exfoliators like the WIZKER brush have soft and firm bristles for the face, body, and sensitive skin. When you follow these 10 tips religiously, you’ll prevent razor bumps and ingrown hairs permanently!

Do you think you'd ever do videos on beard care? There's a lot of confusion with beard products and properly moisturizing the skin underneath the beard without making your beard greasy. For example, virtually all beard channels will say "beard oil is to moisturize your skin," despite them being pretty much 100% emollient with no occlusive and no humectant.
I'm sure your audience is mostly women, but I'm sure many of them have boyfriends/husbands with beards, fathers, brothers, etc., and it could help with gifts.

Any idea why waxing still causes shave bumps? I get them in my bikini area and inner and back of my thigh. I always exfoliate a day or two before hand, and then I start exfoliating again with a chemical exfoliant probably four days after I get it done.

Use an aha/ bha acne serum and use right after shaving. Also before getting out of shower and right after shaving, use a salicylic acid or benzoyl perioxde wash and leave on for at least 3 minutes.

@drdray I get irritation and itchiness. Unfortunately my hair starts grows the very next day and even when I shave it looks like strawberry skin. I am also allergic to metal so it may be giving me rashes and itchiness from that. What would be the best method to remove hair? I can’t afford lasik removal. Shaving is a discomfort for me 🙁

Hi Dr Dray, I always thought it was a myth that you could train your hair follicle to grow a different direction, is this possible for head hair in the case of a cowlick?

  • @MephistoAngel
    @MephistoAngel Год назад +1

Lol if I shaved in the direction of my hair growth no hairs would be shaved. I’m hairy and I’ve always had to shave in the opposite direction of hair growth or I’m hairy by night time. My hair grows fast as well and I need to get super close to my skin with the razor. My Scottish/Irish/British hair kinda sucks 😂 Luckily I’ve never had skin irritations for shaving so that’s a plus ❤

So I like cetaphil, I have the daily facial cleanser, the salicylic gentle clear face wash, and a few days ago I i bought the gentle clear daily scrub… I’ve never had a problem with any other products they have, but when I use the scrub, it burns. But it’s only on my cheeks and not my neck which is my most troubled area. Do you think Im just having a a reaction to the ingredients in scrub, or is it normal and mean it’s doing what it should? Should I stop using it? This is just literally the only time my skin has ever had a burning sensation after anything I’ve put on my face
