Top Fuel stuck throttle crash

- Pommy Steve Read in the 4th round of Top Fuel qualifying at the 2008 Fuchs Australian Nationals, WSID, Australia. His run appeared to be a stout one, but no time was recorded. Unfortunately his throttle jammed open after the finish line with terrible consequences. He crashed into the sand trap and safety net.
I've watched this a dozen times over the past few months. Those header flames alive and well way past the finish line sends a chill down my spine every time I watch it.

There is absolutely nothing, and i repeat NOTHING like seeing a Top Fuel dragster go by in person. When the dragster is sitting at the line you can feel it all the way up your spine...and when it takes off.......
That was a 1/2 mile pull without question. Very scary.
I was there that night and remember it well last run of the night around 11.30 pm
Have you thought about installing an ejector seat?

There are options for sttck throttke... you slap the fuel shutoff (it'll blow up.. but it is the only real way if the remote shutoff, Lahey safety systems, etc. Fail.. (at least those are mandated as of recently and 2008/2009 respectively (in NHRA anyway) but guys used to run IHRQ because the rules were less strict.. that generally never ended well though.....

I hope the guy was OK! Do they not have a manual fuel shutoff in the drivers cockpit? In NHRA some (all?) cars have a remote shut off capability, the crew chief can hit a button and remotely shut off the car. Clay Millicans channel shows it in some of his videos, apparently this car didn't have one?
He only suffered a broken finger. We saw him at tge pub the next day. It was a while ago now, and the technology wasn't around for a remote shut off here in Oz.

Two things. First of all, that was unfortunately Don Garlits's car. Second thing, that had to have been at least 400mph.

@Wambonater Don't believe so. That was a Gary Clapshaw car in the video.
Those things are geared to be at redline at the finish line. I think the engine blew a little after the line as you can see in the vid. all that oil probably occupied his attention just before he broke the sound barrier.

All depends on how the Clutch is set up, in NHRA they all gotta run a 3.20 gear ratio.

@@Jeb4100 Generally top fuelers engine' rpm's actually get lower as they go down the track as the clutches get closer to locking up. These are direct drives with no gear changes during the pass. I also believe the rear gear ratio is mandated to be the same for the class.

When driving these things there is a lot to do. Firstly you obviously have to keep it straight, which can sometimes be harder than it looks. also, there is a "groove" in the track where the rubber is best, which you have to keep the car in to get the best traction, if you drift out of it the car is pulled towards the wall/centre line. Also, it takes a lot to tune these cars to even run a number, so it takes a lot of skill to tune them right

With a top fuel dragster, it's far from as simple as turning it off
@@SeshScumbag yes it is, they litterally have to cut the fuel because the engine is dieseling over the finish.
