27:43 - lemme elaborate on something (boss spoilers) when I say we couldn't "really challenge him hiding in the shadows" I mean you specifically couldn't go INTO the shadows with him (obviously you could pop him out of the floor to attack him in 06)
The shadow fan boy and me feels very validated by the fact we now know canonically Shadow only lost because he let Sonic win. Honestly I wouldn’t even care if they said “sonic would still be able to defeat him, shadow is just capping“. It just feeds into that childish side of my brain that wants to see my favorite character win despite the evidence. Edit: in case everyone missed it shadow said that he would only beat sonic when they are on equal terms implying that he felt his doom powers gave him an unfair advantage which is likely why he hesitated to use them against the blue hedgehog in the cut scene. Also a part of that could be that he doesn’t want to do permanent damage to sonic since shadow with his doom powers seems to be almost comparable to his super form. And despite their rivalry shadow has immense respect for sonic and isn’t going to kill him over a grudge match.
This is my personal headcanon, but I truly believe sonic and shadow are equal in strength and speed (Omega even states as much in this game) and the winner of their fights normally will come down to circumstances out of their control or whoever has the most chaos emeralds to enhance their already impressive strength. Shadow might be able to defeat sonic if he goes all out and removed his inhibitor rings, however shadow seems honorable enough to fight sonic on equal terms without needing to resort to such a tactic. Besides we all know sonic normally pulls his punches so who’s to say sonic wouldn’t be able to tough it out if push came to shove.
@@comicfan1324I think your mostly correct but imo shadow said he will only fight sonic on equal terms because he thinks the doom powers are not something he earned and something that black doom gave him, we even see him lose those powers after he defeats black doom meaning that they truly were never his powers.
@@FluppietheRockruffFan I said that he lost them because in the final cutscene we see that the wings dissolved, if he would have retracted them I would agree that they will use it in the future, but they kinda just faded. I don't know how they could bring them back without involving black doom again, so I highly doubt they are gonna be part of shadow moving forward
Yeah, but chaos island levels are really good. The only thing that I think could’ve made it cooler would be if there was a section of the level where SQUID appears and you have to run across its translucent purple trail and destroy it before you can move on. And with that you can use chaos control to stop it to destroy it quicker. Not only do I think that would be pretty neat but it would be a nice home March to everyone’s favorite “jumpscare” from the game
Dude, im not gonna lie, chaos island was my most hyped stage in this game. Already this island has like the most interesting and diverse environments but then they turn it into a boost stage which was beautifully transferred over. Maybe because its so fresh in my mind by playing frontiers over and over, but the references just WORK and i get ever little detail, especially the ZAP symbol. I love how they use all the frontiers enemies especially, just makes the level so good, almost like a dlc map! The only thing i wished occurred is if missions changed scenery like og gens, chaos island should take place in cyberspace, not the regular cyberspace levels but the memories of the end destroying the ancients. That’d be so sick aughhhh. Also something that drives me insane is that shadow generations says the purple goop made from mephilis is called get this “corruption”. THAT BRINGS UP SO MANY QUESTIONS. Like already we have two tribes in the sonic lore called the ancients, and then we have this. Does this mean mephilis could technically survive in cyberspace? Or is this just another case of hahaha coincidence. IM LOSING MY MIND NOW AUGHHHH.
9:30 glad to see I’m not the only one who got a sudden surge of nostalgia seeing the Hot Springs over there. The frontiers and forces nostalgia really hit hard for me since unlike all the other mainline games represented in generations which were released before I joined this fandom, those two are games I experienced alongside everyone so it just hits different I suppose
Ngl, chaos island might be my favorite level, it’s just so cool being able to recognize these hyper specific areas from chaos island. It’s not just ‘oh it’s this level theme again’, you’re actually like recognizing specific landmarks as you go along with
It reminds me of stages in Smash how they use all kinds of recognizable set pieces - they even include stuff from the other islands so nothing is left out.
Great video as always! Your reactions to callbacks even from widely disliked games like Forces are always so joyful and positive. Keep up the great work, loving the playthrough thus far.
Ayyy thanks for turning into all of them! I know it's different from what I usually do but a new Sonic game always captivates my attention for at least a week. So much to analyze :D I specifically find poorly received things the most interesting. The Ark has *so* much focus in this game and its marketing so I actually have the least interest in that. Reimagining a good game is nowhere near as interesting to me. I enjoy the black sheep because they typically have good ideas that can be iterated on. Even Sonic Boom had puzzles that made it into Frontiers.
29:40 this has to be my favorite Mephiles quote now. You can just tell how desperate he is. Mephiles has finally discovered a slimmer of a chance to restore himself to the timeline, but in the end he wasn’t a match for a Shadow
Of course you clip through the floor while fighting the 06 boss. Still a really cool fight nonetheless. I love how they leaned into Mephiles’ “mad god” aspect.
I have literally never seen anyone expereince that glitch in this fight and I watched a lot of playthrough by now. It's really funny to still get surprised by the game.
18:33 Well the boost gauge is clearly still there but the fact that it almost feels like you don’t have to worry about how much boosting you do most of the time really shows how thought out the map was. They give you a decent amount of rings in every area to recharge your gauge
26:00 I’m just gonna say it: best boss in the game And I love how it is just a full on love letter to the longtime fans. Unless you go out of your way to open up the chests that summarize the events of sonic 06, the game does not explain who or what Mephiles is. Even neo metal sonic is explained to you by Omega if you go out of your way to talk to him. So if you’re a new fan to the series you’ll be just as confused as shadow is when this guy shadow clearly doesn’t know is talking as if they have this grand history and understandably the villain is very annoyed when he realizes shadow has once more forgotten who he is. Also as you mentioned in your gameplay it is nice to be fighting an enemy that is just as big as you are for a change since every other boss in the game is some enormous monster. Sure methyl us briefly turns into one of his larger enemy types near the end of the fight but for the most part you’re fighting someone on equal footing as shadow in terms of scale. And quite frankly my favorite part of this fight is how pathetic and desperate Mephiles is during the battle. He may talk a big game but he has truly fallen from grace. He was once a God that destroyed all of reality just by reforming with Iblis, Now he’s desperately fighting just to exist… And he’s losing. He is truly been outclassed by shadow at this point. As the ultimate life form says there is no future for him anymore
i love the appreciative commentary, it's all non-stop looking into what you're playing and finding something new to experience or finding a thing to mention, it's very unique, but it's also very fun seeing someone's genuine reaction while they keep a keen eye on details
I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's rewarding to find new things to talk about. It seems a lot of the stuff I find interesting doesn't get verbalized by others so why not do it myself?

Mephiles in this game is voiced by Robbie Daymond apparently. Not quite the same as Dan Green, but I think he does a commendable job. Really solid dude as well.
When he wants to be deep he can replicate Dan's performance really well. At first I didn't know how to feel about a higher pitched Mephiles but after listening to it countless times I'm seeing how it could work. Not bad
@@DolphynsDeck it fits the Mephiles we see in this game quite well. One who has been presumably trapped in White Space since the end of 06. A desperate god who sees the last chance he is going to get for a while to come back. Though with all the hype I saw surrounding Mephiles there is no way this is the end for him.
Chaos Island is great and in my opinion it is the most positive indication of where Sonic could be going with his more traditional levels. Taking an Open Zone level and making it a pretty long level is incredible work. It's not my favourite level (the 06 defender in me won't let anything but the 06 level take that spot.) but Chaos Island is a phenomenal stage that i was not expecting to be as good as it was.
