Such a beautiful tribute to dear Alan! He was the kindest and best of men as Emma Thompson said. You're right, it was undeniably shameful that his wife published his diaries when he explicitly expressed he wanted them to be destroyed. They have let people make false assumptions and speculations about Alan that would never have happened if the book had not been published. Rima doesn't even own the rights to them anymore, Canongate does

Been a diary keeper for over 20 years.
Helps me go back in time, evaluate my work progress and count my blessings.
I hate that someone would publish my personal thoughts for their own gain and I am just an ordinary person.
Someone else's thoughts and ideas are not yours to share.
It's heartbreaking and difficult to believe that anyone would stoop so low as to share private thoughts that don't belong to them with the whole world.

Rima did not publish Alan’s diaries for her own gain.
Rima published the diaries to raise money for the charity Pancreatic Cancer UK. Pancreatic cancer is often considered one of the worst as it is typically not spotted till the final stages due to it being usually asymptomatic in the early stages.
Pancreatic Cancer UK focus on researching into making effective treatments, routine screenings and raising awareness around the symptoms.
Alan was a charitable man, so much so that he donated generous amounts to multiple charities in his will.

@@nobody07062i know that's why she published them, but that's still no excuse! Nothing gives her the right to publish his private thoughts for the whole world to see! She even said herself in the interview for the book event, She never read them because they were private. That's not even true because the book was already out and she never would have sold them sight unseen! Pancreatic cancer research is very very important, but she could have donated some of the many millions that Alan left her, without stooping that low as publishing his private thoughts, WITHOUT his wishes!! Some of the things in the book have caused some people to form assumptions about Alan and his personal life that aren't true, so much so, that certain passages in the book have been removed in the newer editions. Another reason that shows why this book should never have been published! And yes I know that Alan was very charitable and gave most of his money away, but I find it hard to believe that Alan would have even thought about publishing something private of Rima's if the shoe was on the other foot!

      @@nobody07062that's a lame excuse.
Alan left her millions and she could have donated some of that money instead.
An appeal for donations on social media would help too.
Every Alan fan would have donated.
There's no excuse for exposing Alan's private thoughts to the public, especially after what he said himself " I don't think it's right that everyone knows everything about me", this is one of his famous quotes I saw online.
Tom Burke, Alan's godson, states in his Guardian interview that Alan never intended to write a memoir ( his exact words were "I know myself and I'm not interested").
You can Google " Tom Burke on Alan Rickman" to read the whole interview.
There's also another book by Maureen Paton, Alan's Unauthorized Biography,on which Alan refused to collaborate.
This is all proof that he would never want to write anything about himself, much less publish it.
Even if he wanted to write a book about himself it should have him the one to decide what goes in it,not somebody else.
      That book tarnished Alan's memory.
Some entries led Alan's fans to believe he had a double life, for which he can't defend himself.
      No excuses for his wife.
Of all people, she should have been the one to know him better than anyone else and honor his memory after death like he respected her wishes in life.

19:07 what I have been saying since I discovered Alan 3 years ago.His biggest mistake was spending so many years of his life with that woman who disrespected his memory when she published his diaries.
Apart from Alan Taylor's ( the diaries editor) note in the books foreword, Alan's own godson Tom Burke clearly mentions in his Guardian interview that Alan would never write a memoir.
But the most compelling evidence that Alan would never disclose his personal life to the public was what he said himself "if people want to know who I am it's all in the work".
I am disgusted by his wife's decision to publish them without his consent and I just knew she was the wrong person for him even before the book was published.
Not only did she violate his privacy she also led some of Alan's fans to make ridiculous assumptions about his sexual preferences , because of some entry that shouldn't have been in the book, lies for which he can't defend himself.
Dear Alan was so close to what we would call "perfection" he deserved the world ,he definitely shouldn't have spent a second of his time with that woman who tarnished his memory when he honored her every wish and was faithful to her.
Alan left her millions in his will and she should have donated some of that money to fund the pancreatic cancer research instead of exposing his private life for everyone to read.
    How utterly disgusting and shameful!!!!!

Alan wanted his diaries to be destroyed.
The diaries editor,Alan Taylor, mentions in the foreword that it's not known whether Alan wanted his diaries published.
A lot of sources that verify that Alan would never want his diaries published.

Alan's own words when asked if he would ever write a memoir were "NO, I know myself and I am not interested"

I cant imagine that Alan would be mad at Rima over the diaries. He loved her & trusted her. She was the one to deal with his belongings. He was gone. He would want her to be at peace. He would want her to be ok after his death. Shes the one alone in the world without him. He had so little after diagnosis. Im sure they both in shock. He was finishing a new home for her before he passed. 💔😭🙏🏻🌹

That has nothing to do with her publishing his private diaries! Whether he told her explicitly not to that's not the point! If she loved him so much she wouldn't expose his private thoughts to others. I don't know anyone who would do this to anyone they loved especially a famous person. His property might belong to her legally, but morally should she be publishing his private thoughts to the whole world? She said at the book event when asked, have you ever read his private diaries? She said no they were private. That's not even true because the book was already out and she's certainly isn't going to turn over 27 volumes to some publisher without knowing what's in it! If he never said one word to her about the diaries, she should have known better then to take it upon herself and have them published. We know that Alan never would have written a book about himself he has said as much. We know even the editor Alan Taylor said it is not known if Alan would ever want his diaries published. We know Alan himself has said, I don't think it's right that everyone know everything about me! Don't make excuses for her. It was an utterly shameful thing for her to do, as the podcast stated. Several passages have already been removed from the newer editions of the book. That should tell you something right there

The fact that Alan trusted her, sacrificed his family dream for her and made sure she was provided for before he passed makes this act of publishing his private diaries even more disgusting.
Publisher Alan Taylor confirms that it's not known whether Alan would like to have seen his diaries published, that's in the introduction.
Apart from that ,his godson Tom Burke was interviewed for the Guardian and said Alan never intended to write a memoir, that's public domain.
But the most important evidence comes from Alan himself "I think it's not right that everyone knows everything about me" that's one of his quotes you can find if you look for Alan Rickman quotes online.
Not only did she betray him by publishing his private stuff she also caused a lot of Alan's fans to believe he had a double life , because of some of the entries, which is a lie and for which he can't defend himself.
Alan was faithful to her all his life and it's painful for those who truly love him to see how little she offered him in comparison to what he sacrificed for her.

Publishing Alan private diaries after his death, whether he specifically told her to destroy them or not, which I have no problem believing, is just the final stage of this betrayal of trust. The first is her reading them after his death... when she herself said they were private and she never read them, Then the editor, the publishers and whoever else was involved in the book have read them to decide what to put in the book. What if after reading it they decided not to publish it after all? Then they read it for nothing...they violated his privacy for nothing! By publishing it then for the entire world to see, they have violated common decency to the extreme. They are all culpable! Shame on all of them!

Alan Rickman was a celebrity so there are many people mentioned in his diaries from what i have heard.

“It is worth bearing in mind that when in his diaries he is critical of friends it was born of love. Moreover we can safely assume that what he wrote he was also prepared to say face to face.” Alan Taylor. The diaries are edited very respectfully and don’t reveal that much about his private life. In fact the main complaint from critics at the time the diaries came out - was that they didn’t reveal enough personal stuff. If you have a problem with the diaries then don’t read them - simple. Anyway, I bet if his family (including Rima of course) did a documentary on his life - certain ‘fans’ still would not be happy.

"The diaries don't reveal as much about his private life".
Not as much but some right?
It's not right to twist the meaning of words to fit our agenda.
Alan Rickman had so many friends and fellow actors and I am sure none of them knew they were going to be in his private diaries.
So it's not the fact that some names are mentioned in the book that's wrong, what's wrong is that those people were never asked if they would like the public to know that they were Rickman's friends or related to him in any other way.
I have read that his Harry Potter fellow actors had no idea their names were going to be in there.
Plus Rickman made a reference to Emma Watson in a not so kind manner, like TMZ said, which i have verified by reading an article about that.
And for a private man like him, it is safe to ASSUME ( your term not mine) that he wouldn't have wanted his diaries published upon his passing like he didn't let people know details of his personal life when he was alive.

You will see there are many Rima supporters who know that Alan didn't want his private diaries published but won't admit it because it's difficult for their huge egos to accept they are wrong.

@@LianaMarvel well Daniel Radcliffe didn’t seem to be upset by what Alan wrote about him. In fact he said “all the stuff Alan wrote was very lovely and nostalgic reading”. Daniel, Emma and Rupert are all adults now so I’m sure they would have understood what Alan wrote and not be offended. I know Daniel particularly has commented in the past how embarrassed he was about those early HP movies because he knew his acting skills were not great. Alan also went on to describe Daniel as “sensitive, articulate & smart”. He was incredibly supportive of all the child actors but never spoke down to them. Of course being a very experienced actor - he’s going to have opinions about who he works with from time to time. If everyone he worked with over his career were edited out of his diaries for sensitivity reasons - then that would be very odd don’t you think? They were part of his working life story. He gave advice freely and generously to his fellow actors. He was not unkind. You say Alan didn’t let people know details of his personal life when he was alive, well according to Barbara & Nicole - they know everything about him because of what he revealed in interviews (which is completely ridiculous) so which is it?

    • @LianaMarvel

@@janz1352 The Harry Potter actors were part of Alan's life story ,but it's none of our business to know what he thought of them during the time Harry Potter was being filmed.
      That was private.
Like when a cameraman asked him after Harry Potter was over what his feelings were.
Alan said "it's private and I am not going to share with that" pointing at the camera.
Alan also said "I don't think it's right that people want to know everything about me" , that's included in Alan Rickman quotes anyone can find online.
It all boils down to one thing: whatever his feelings were , positive or negative, about the people he met and the actors he worked with, was private and not to be shared, that's what a diary is for.
I remind you that Rickman was asked to contribute to the writing of his Unauthorized Biography by Maureen Paton and refused.
He never had the intention of writing a book about himself,as he was very humble and one of his quotes was "what is it about actors? God knows I get bored with actors talking about themselves".
I can't believe that a person as private as him would reveal his life experiences to a wider public other than his family, especially when there are people who never got asked if they had given their consent for the publishing house to include entries where their names were mentioned.
When the diaries were published there was a Daily Mail title saying "Ruder than Snape" and the article included the specific entries with reference to these kids that need directing, Emma Watson's poor diction and "this side of Albania at times".
I am sure he wouldn't want his little fellow actors to know he made that thought.
That's one more reason why this book should never have been published.
Not to mention the" Dark Harbor"kissing scene entry with Norman Reedus, which led the fans to believe he had a double life and was using his wife as a beard.
Unfortunately, he never showed affection toward his wife, unless they were asked to pose for the camera ,the way he did with his female friends and fellow actors, so that caused the fans to believe he was just another Hollywood actor having multiple relationships.
One more reason I don't approve of his diaries being published is that his widow ( according to the Guardian) gave the rights to them to the publishing house.
They can edit the rest of the entries, include content that was never there to attract new buyers and make more money on the book.
One can never know for sure to what extent these first editions are edited if you get my drift.
Speaking for myself, the best way to know the actor is by things he said himself, like " if people want to know who I am it's all in the work"or talking about his character Snape "finding an old friend again and a part of myself".
Everything falls into place when you realize what that part was .
No diaries needed for us to know him better than what he told us about himself.

Although I believe this to be true, it is not necessary in believing they should not have been published for the world to see. Everything points to the fact that he would never have written a book about himself. His own Godson's mom ask him if he would ever write a book and he said no. I know me. I'm not interested. He has made the comment I don't think it's right that everyone knows everything about me. And as you mentioned, the forward states from the editor Alan Taylor, that it is unknown if Alan would have wanted his diaries published. He even mentions that he has a secret code in it. I don't know how you can get any clearer that he wouldn't want someone reading it much less publishing it. What it boils down to is the one who knew him the most, who supposedly loved him the most, decided on her own, for whatever reason good or bad, to have his diaries published. IDK anyone who would want their personal diaries published, let alone a celebrity like Alan. And he may not have said one word to her but he may have thought she would know he wouldn't want them published, and she took it upon herself to do it anyway. She had to have read all 27 journals. She even said at the book
event when the book was already released, when asked, that she never read his diaries because they were private, but obviously that's not true. The publisher at Canongate and anyone else involved in writing the book have read all 27 volumes.... Not just what was put in there, but all of it. And she sold the rights to Canongate, they own it she doesn't, they can do whatever they want with it from now on. It is very very ambiguous and is giving people wrong assumptions about Alan and his personal life. Thankfully, some of those passages have been deleted from the newer editions.

Emma Thompson and Ruby Wax were Alan Rickman's best friends. He lived with Wax and her bf at one time. They and his family stand with Rima Horton. Alan Rickman was an excellent actor. A good and supportive friend, but he was not a bloody Saint! He was a man. I have read his diaries. They were alright. I have to write something. I don't believe he was keen on it. I don't know who said he didn't want them published. I don't care! It's bullocks! I can't see Emma doing all she did for the book if Alan really didn't want it! I'm calling this out. I also believe Alan would be very angry at what has been said about Rima. Emma has openly said that many women threw themselves at Alan. They didn't think Rima was pretty enough or loved him enough. Alan himself had no problem shutting these people down!

There would be NO reason for such a statement if Alan wanted his diaries published.
      Is that clear for you?
You shouldn't forget that Alan's widow gave her approval for this particular editor to edit the diaries, that obviously means she admits that's it's not known whether Alan would want someone else to publish his PRIVATE diaries.

Your comment doesn't make a lot of sense to me. First you say you don't believe Alan would be too keen on the idea of publishing his diaries, then you turn around and say it's bollocks, that he wanted them destroyed! I was just reading some blurbs about his book before it came out and it said he could say certain things because THE DIARIES WERE NEVER MEANT TO BE PUBLISHED! Alan had no intention of writing his memoirs, no intention of writing a book of any kind and even if he were to decide to do that, he would be the one picking out what goes in it not someone else . He'd probably use the diary as a reference, he wouldn't be publishing the whole freaking thing! You mentioned you read it and then you say he was no bloody Saint he was just a man. Well he was as close to being a saint as anyone, and most certainly is now! If the book made you even think that for a second that's one more reason why it should never have been published! It has led people to make false assumptions about Alan and his life. I have been told that certain ambiguous sections have been removed from the newer editions. I say bravo, hopefully that's true.

That's true, they did not publish all 27 volumes but Rima had to have read them, and the publisher and editor both had to read all of them to decide what to put in it. The appendix had a few entries from the 70s even. Rima auctioned off , donated or sold 35 boxes of Alan's things, including his diaries, correspondence with friends, notes, scripts etc,(did she save anything?) for about a million dollars. She relinquished All rights to his diaries to Canongate so they now own ALL 27 volumes!

@oOBubblestreamOo You’re absolutely correct. This is not valid information and is defamatory against Rima Horton and trial by social media when the accused has no right of reply. Interesting that this has suddenly emerged on a U.S. tabloid site, yet no media in the U.K. have picked up on this and the diaries have been out for quite a while - so why has this only been revealed now? Of course if this allegation is conveniently buried away on a trashy U.S. gossip tabloid, then there is less chance that Alan’s family or friends will know about it. Crucially if a serious allegation is made by a media outlet about anyone - then it is their responsibility to name the source of that information - otherwise the allegation has no credibility. Furthermore no mention has been made by TMZ of contacting representatives of either Canongate or Rima Horton for comment thereby denying them the chance to respond. Is that fair or ethical behavior by media? No of course it isn’t.

He said, "I don't think it's right that everybody knows everything about me". He also wrote in secret code in his diaries, doesn't sound like someone who'd want his diaries published now does it? I have no problem believing that he had mentioned to her at some point in his life to get rid of his diaries when he's gone, or something like that. I doubt if he put it in a will, why should he? Didn't he trust her to do the right thing with them? Wouldn't his loving wife know better than anyone his thoughts on the privacy of his diaries? First, there's probably nothing in writing that says this I imagine Alan would trust his wife if he told her by the way just get rid of my diaries when I'm gone. This is just the icing on the cake we already knew that he would never want his diaries published. First of all in the book itself Alan Taylor says we do not know if Alan would want his diaries published. Now that makes it look like maybe he didn't say anything about the diaries one way or the other, she's not going to tell the editor and the publisher that. Another time he told the mother of Tom Burke, his godson, when asked, if you'd ever write a book he said no, I know who I am and I'm not interested. And if he had planned to write a book at some time in the future and said he would use his diaries it still wouldn't matter. It would be Alan who decided what to put in the books from his diaries not someone else, not even his wife. And since he had no intention of ever writing a book, and unfortunately passed away, no one should have published his diaries. Not only did she have them published, she sold the rights to them, meaning Canongate now owns them! So I am sure this is true I'm sure he wanted them destroyed why wouldn't he?? Nothing points that he would even consider himself writing a book with his diaries! So your accusations and recriminations are moot!
