among all the papers arches is the best, but its also very expensive, my experience with canson montval paper was really bad and I wouldn't buy that paper again, I always think more than the quality of the paints, watercolor paper matters more. If you have a good quality paper you can use less expensive paints on it and produce wonderful results. I suggest to invest a little more on watercolor paper rather than the paints if you are just starting out and then take it from there.
María Jimena Nonato canson is garbage. They’ve somehow managed to become the brand every art supply store stocks all their shelves with, but arches is uh-mazing for watercolor if you can afford it. I’ve not used the bockingford brand before, but anything is a step up from canson, tbh.
Honestly with watercolor paper DOES matter. Using cheap paper only causes frustration and hinders growth. That doesn't mean you have to buy arches paper, but using 100% cotton paper DOES improve your work immensely. Brushes and paint aren't quite as important, though though..
@@nerdieone1 I have not tried the XL paper yet. My last paper I bought was the Fontaine paper from Clairefontaine in 300g / m2 100% cotton. 10 large sheets for 14,60 € at amazon. Hey guys! Happy Saturday! I'm back with a brand new video! This time we will test out cheap and expensive watercolor paint and paper to see what works and what doesn't really work together! Watch the whole video to find out how to paint the gemstones in the thumbnail! ^_^
Hello, Mako or whoever read this😐 What do you think about Canson XL Aquarell Watercolor pad? Well they have 300gsm, coldpressed, and have 30 sheets, and 100% Cellulose. But they doesn't say anything about how the paper gummed or not. They like $7.1 or €6.2 in here. Well more lke 100$ for me though 😂
Prang is really cheap but compared to other watercolors around the same price range like Crayola's, you get more that what you think you'll get. It's very good considering the price.
The price does matter especially if you are a beginner but in the end, it is the skill. You can even have the most pricefull supplies and still be bad.
In my experience especially when it comes to acrylic paint canvas mdf board paper etc doesn't really matter as long as the pound of paper is 140 or above to hold acrylic paint. However when it comes to acrylic paint please do not buy super cheap paint. You will regret it. I found out the hard way that most cheap paints have chemicals in them so that if you say mix blue and red u will not get purple but instead a muddy brown. Instead invest in a paint set that's at 20 or above which to me is still pretty cheap. I recently purchase a nice mixing set of heavy body liquitex paints. The set came with the primary colors as well as black and white 2 oz of paint per tube. The set was only 15 which is super cheap for that kind of quality of paint. I lucked out on a auction. But this way I can mix all my colors instead of paying more for a bigger set. Another trick is if u do get a cheaper set of paint splurge on a more expensive tube of white and black. It will make your cheap paints pop! Hope this helps people!;)
As an Indonesian even the cheapest one almost like i need to sell my soul to get them. My pentel 24 watercolor sets is like $15 or less. Love 'em to the death though. Imagine that 1$ is same as Rp.1.000 Pentel WC 100$!? And 10 sheets of 300gsm WC paper 64$!? This is why i keep getting blank paper nervousness. 😂 well, i still ended buy them anyway. No regret!! *cough blood and dies* 😴 😏
I'm from Iran and can totally relate :( Art supplies have become rare and super expensive here even the cheap ones. It's all because of sanctions and political issues that's putting pressure on poor ppl, this started just as i was starting my art journey and i can't put into words how much it pressures me and kills my creativity when i think of how expensive i've bought my supplies 😶
@@raindrop5568 yeah! XD i totally agree. Cotman price in here almost can buy you a notebook/mini laptop. And local art supply, they more like 30th dupe of the original, that's why i save my money to buy my art supply.
Usually what differentiates the cheap watercolors from the more expensive once’s is the lightfast rating. Sure they may be slightly comparable to the more expensive ones now, but say a few years down the line they will likely be faded and dull. If you plan to keep your artworks overtime it’s definitely smart to invest in more expensive watercolors.
I agree! There are lots of student grade watercolors that are super lightfast as well which is great! I think it's just also important for beginners to be aware of how important watercolor paper can be as well! I get lots of comments where people are just frustrated with the results even though they do exactly what I do! And I don't want them to think they are just bad! I think if you know that your paper might not be the best and you don't expect too much from it, you might still practice and then might invest in something higher quality without giving up halfway through a painting!
My favorite paper is the Canson Moulin du Roy hot pressed paper❤️ but when I recently bought a new pad it had a sticker with ”New Quality” written on it😭 and now it doesn't behave the same as it used to... It doesn't take erasing that well anymore and it makes the masking fluid rip the paper😭 Hope I can maybe still get some old quality paper somewhere...
Oh my, that's terrific! O A O Moulin is my best pal. It's not only cheaper than Arches but also perform better than Arches, my opinion, of course. I hope that stores in my place are stocked with some old Moulin, I'm gonna go take 'em all ㅠㅠ

Thanks for this great information! I never thought watercolor paper could make such a big difference! I really like your back and white lady picture with flowers on her head. Lovely!
Just to say Mako ,in the UK ,you can get holbein for a lot cheaper (I got my 24 tube set for £40 )but schmicke is about £80-90 ,so I think where you live will affect it
Schmincke basically looks good on all the papers in this test. After watching your videos I actually ordered some Schmincke halfpans to my watercolor-set because I wanted to try out the brand. Thanks for sharing these videos, it's very helpful to see different supplies in action before buying them.
I absolutely agree with everything you said. The paper really does matter, when it comes to vibrancy and achieving certain watercolor effects. I was so frustrated when I was first trying out watercolors. I didn’t understand until later that my inexpensive cellulose wc paper had certain limitations. That realization was a huge stress-reliever, when using that paper thereafter. I greatly appreciate all the time and work you put into this video to explain how paper kind and quality really does vary no matter what quality the paints are. This is so important for budding artists. Thank you Mako! 💕 PS - I’ve actually been planning a blog post about watercolor tips and suggestions from my own experience learning watercolors as a new medium. In the post, I’m planning to include suggestions on what to invest more money on, if at all, given the objective of trying watercolors. For example, some people may solely want to try them for coloring books, therefore the focus would mostly be on what paints (and brushes) to get rather than the paper, which would obviously already be provided for in the coloring book. On the other hand, hobby artists who might gift their artwork or even decide to sell some of them, would have different things to consider when choosing art materials, and so on and so forth. So, with that in mind, would it be okay with you if I reference this video in my post?
That was so nice, like an art compilation of grrrreat ART made with grrrreat ART SUPLIES by a grrrrrrrrrrreat ARTIST... Loved it❤ #makoficationsquad 《Have you guys noticed that Mako looks enchantingly beautiful today?》
honestly, I believe that the quality of the paints/brushes/paper that you're using really makes a difference, not necessarily the price. I used to use cheap watercolors for a long time (the artist's loft 36 color set-- I think everyone knows about this set) and while following mako's tutorials, I wondered why I wasn't getting the same results. however, when I asked for the Windsor and Newton Cotman watercolors (bought off amazon for ~10$) I found an immediate and large improvement in my artwork. So, buying slightly more expensive artwork is worth it in the end, because of the amazing pieces you get out of it.
For paper, where you really start to see it is when the water volume increases. These tests were pretty controlled, but there is no way that the two wood pulp papers are going to compete with Arches when it comes to buckling and warping with high water volumes. Throw in other techniques, like scrubbing and lifting and, again, Arches is going to win, it's just going to hold up so much better under repeated abuse and layering. For the paints, a lot have noted the lightfastness, which is going to be true, but the pigment loads are also very different, cheaper paints have way more filler, and there is almost no chance that cheap colors are single pigment. That's really going to show up when it comes to mixing, which is where the cheaper ones start to turn to mud much, much, faster than the expensive ones. Though I have to give credit to Prang, they do produce really vibrant looking colors on initial lay down. So, I have to agree on quality over quantity. The high end papers and paints are just going to perform better and last longer. They're going to behave as expected, you will not have to fight them to perform certain techniques, and you can usually get away with less colors because mixing is much more viable. I get that not everyone can do it, but if you can, spend the money for the professional grade. Watercolor, like colored pencils, is one of those mediums where the quality and grade can make a real difference to your enjoyment of it.
I have only recently started watercolor painting. I find your information so helpful. I was surprised to learn the paper used causes such a difference in results. I’m learning so much! Thanks
Thank you for your advice, Mako. I think I should invest more in watercolour paper because when I painted, the colour doesn't spread well even I use wet and wet tech. Btw, I use winsor and newton cotman series and unbrand watercolour paper. It help me so much. Have a nice day, Mako. #makoficationsquad
Such a good, well structured video, clearly showing how the papers and paints react! it must have taken a lot of hard work to make this video and I'm grateful for it thank you :)
Interesting video! When i Just started watercolour i used really cheap paper and the biggest problem was that it would look overworked quickly and the colours looked flat. Using and finding the right paper (and later on paint) made a difference for me.
Yes! I tried to save on watercolor paper in the beginning as well and was so unhappy! Cheap watercolor paper can be totally fine for quick sketches and simple paintings! But most beginners don't know that simply using other paper can do the trick when something doesn't work out!
I don't use watercolor, I don't paint, I couldn't even tell a difference between a paintbrush and a feather duster. But everything you do is just so relaxing and inspiring, it really awakens my artistic curiosity ! So if I ever take the plunge, thank you in advance for all your advices :)
Excellent points! Sometimes the quality of the materials is about the end product - how well it looks and how long it holds, but sometimes its more about how the quality of the materials affect your process of creating - how fast you must move the brush, mindfulness of water to pigment ratios, whether or not you can do certain techniques easier / harder. The less buckling I get with Arches hot pressed is like. Holy Grail. I finish a piece and don't have to worry about re-flattening the paper, I can glaze and work faster and make more pieces in a day. It saves me hours!! Which I guess is the reason its always sold out in brick and mortar stores I go to. :c
I think that in some cases the arches side looks more faded because the pigment is fine and gets absorbed in the paper🤷 it's very good because with arches you can make so many layers 😍
Thats a great gemstone and yes I definitely agree its all about the techniques you're using in a certain paper. Happy new year mako!! Sorry ive been away. Binge watching tour recent videos! I miss you!
Another thing I've learned about paper--if you're vegan or vegetarian for animal cruelty or careful for kosher reasons, there are fewer brands to choose from. Some don't say whether their size contains an animal-based gelatin. I've narrowed down to use Strathmore and Fabriano so far. Arches uses gelatin from swine, I must assume, as they did not answer my query at all.
I love your videos so much! I’m starting to learn how to paint slowly by just watching your videos and tutorials. Thank you for inspiring me to paint and make my own content on youtube 💙
This is a helpful video. When using Arches, typically, one is supposed to take a wet rag or sponge and wipe a bit of the sizing off of the surface. You might find that the colors are more vivid.
So I am ashamed to admit that when I first started painting watercolor a little over a year ago, I was just using Canon because my son had received it for a gift and never used it. I went through almost an entire XL pad but never managed to do lifting well for clouds or sun and oftentimes the paper would buckle when doing wet on wet and it doesn't reactivate as well. And this whole time I thought it was me doing something wrong! You don't know how relieved I am that it could be the paper. I am still learning and making mistakes, but I feel reenrggized. Going to splurge on some new 100 cotton paper ASAP
Awww yayy! I'm glad I could help!! Yes the sizing of the paper can make all the difference when it comes to lifting off the paint! I personally really enjoy working on 100% cotton paper and I can highly recommend it! Also make sure to check the paint you are using! Some pigments are naturally more staining, so it can also happen with some colors it can be a little bit more difficult to lift them off the paper!
I rarely comment on your comparison videos, but I find them extremely, EXTREMELY informative and useful! This one was mindblowing in that it explained to me clearly why I never get the desired results: I practice on cheap paper. The thing is, paper is freaking expensive. With art supplies, at least I feel like the investment is long-term - I'm going to use that paint for many pieces. With paper, well, it gets used up; and I end up always saving it for later, afraid of "wasting" it for a bad painting, yet alone for practice sketches. Unfortunately, art is not an affordable hobby if you want to keep getting better results... :( But next time I'm definately gonna follow your advice and save up for paper rather than paints.
Hey girl, I love love your videos! I use Holbein and Daniel Smith, I'm in Canada I've tried schminke but they are so expensive here that there hard to get. For papers I love Bocking Ford and arches those two are what I use for work I'm selling. For my practice work I use canson xl watercolor paper. I really like the Bocking Ford for hot press for my polychromos. But cold pressed I prefer arches if I can afford. Great video!! Xoxo happy new years!!
I'm using the Sonnet watercolors by Nevskaya Palitra/St. Petersburg together with the Baohong 100% Cotton watercolor paper (both cold and hot pressed) from Temu and I'm very happy with that combination. It's also very affordable.
Clicked when I see the notification. ........... always excited for your video. Please do some acrylic paint videos like this. Like which brand is better and which paper can be used for acrylics.
Fabriano Sheets are great, We've used Arches for our projects and its just a dream to work with, color and different techniques just shows! Traditional painting requires a lot of investment for the best products.
Omg! Thank you! 😄 I am really happy! I was also struggling! I thought that the watercolors I was using were not good, I bought many but I wasn't satisfied 😢 but now I know that the paper I was using was not good! And now I am satisfied with the paper I bought! 😆😆 Thank you soooo much 😄😄😄 for helping me 😄😄😄
Beautiful painting........osm....... Very nice art video........i love watercolor painting........you are a beautiful artist ......carrry on........... Very very very nice 💖 👇
Great advice as always. I'm planning on buying my first watercolor set for my birthday in March and I was thinking if I should invest in watercolor paper. Now I know that I definitely should ❤️ I just need to find a place where I can get some that isn't overpriced
This is wonderful. I use both canson and arches depending on what I need. I understand how canson performs so I don't mind it's weaknesses- I don't do a lot of flat washes with it. Ive tried fabriano as well. As a beginner, I try to strike the balance between volume and perfection. Volume makes me more productive but that glass ceiling is there and when you're ready to take the next step and feel like the materials are what's holding you back, make the commitment and take the next step. Also, expensive matls can be counter productive because you might feel like you're wasting money and can be quite intimidating. I use the most basic materials. And now use combination quality for paper and a small professional quality paint set. I've produced crappy outputs and good outputs on both paper.
You just addressed my great degree of frustration when no matter how well I think I am following tutorials my attempts on Canson Montval look disappointing.
To anyone who wants cheap good quality supplies there's this brand i've been using for a long while now, called Koh-i-Noor. Their supplies are surprisingly good quality for the price they offer 😍 I've used their " Brilliant " watercolor set which is almost on artist level watercolors.. Highly pigmented, bright colors But make sure to get the Brilliant set cuz the brand also has a Round watercolor set that isn't as nice. I've also used their chalk pastels and was very happy with them. Thank u for this video 😍 as i have to order things online these are very helpful to me 🙏🙏😇💗
After many years, my local chain bookstore decided to stock some cheap watercolour paper and gouache. I honestly adore it as much as or more than my expensive stuff. I bought a pad of A4 derwent academy watercolour paper for $5 and the gouache for $5.20. The paper warped a bit but I could still do the wet on wet technique and the gouache blended really easily even though I got a set of 12 for $5.20. If you are really broke (like me), look around and there should be quality cheap options (or just get 2nd stuff).
Thank you for the video !! I bought Canson Montval sets since it was highly recommended to me... I know now I should be more careful while choosing... but I'm still new to watercolor... thank you also for the tutorial, it's something I reamly enjoy !!!! #makoficationsquad !
that's why I said you should put your not needed watercolours on a giveaway when you asked on ig what to do with them bc there are more people like me who just can't afford them no matter what, so...please😂

I love crafty experiments like this!
I don't use watercolor, I don't paint, I couldn't even tell a difference between a paintbrush and a feather duster.
But everything you do is just so relaxing and inspiring, it really awakens my artistic curiosity !
So if I ever take the plunge, thank you in advance for all your advices :)
Wow thank you for doing such extensive experiments for us. So useful to see all the comparisons
No, the watercolour doesn’t matter. You showed that. It’s because the artist matters. All of them are beautiful!
Yes!!
Thats a great gemstone and yes I definitely agree its all about the techniques you're using in a certain paper. Happy new year mako!! Sorry ive been away. Binge watching tour recent videos! I miss you!
Thanks for the video mako, the comparation between the watercolor paper and paintings was useful :3
Well done, Mako! You've done an exhaustive report !
Aww haha thanks!
Another thing I've learned about paper--if you're vegan or vegetarian for animal cruelty or careful for kosher reasons, there are fewer brands to choose from. Some don't say whether their size contains an animal-based gelatin. I've narrowed down to use Strathmore and Fabriano so far. Arches uses gelatin from swine, I must assume, as they did not answer my query at all.
wow !!! Mako u are so sweet and your videos are always helpful
This video is great !I love when you don’t know what type of art supplies you like to buy so i just check your chanel and i find what i need to know❤️
The videos are so satisfying and relaxing....😴😍😍
Anybody German too?❤
Omg liked by mako😍😍👌
Thank you for making this! It is so helpful
God bless you forever you just have a great talent. Loved it 💖
Ur experience was a little bit like mine........ur channel is the best for beginners to learn art.......thanks mako.....
Some pigments are naturally more staining, so it can also happen with some colors it can be a little bit more difficult to lift them off the paper!
thank you for these helpful comparisons!

I found it interesting of how much effort you put into your videos
These comparisons are SO helpful. Thank you, once again
Hi mako!
You have inspired me to start with my journey with watercolors thanks you ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hey girl, I love love your videos!
I'd love to try out Arches watercolor paper. That stuff is fancy!
Hi! Mako. You are the sweetest person I have ever seen. I really love you💜💜💜💜
I'm using the Sonnet watercolors by Nevskaya Palitra/St. Petersburg together with the Baohong 100% Cotton watercolor paper (both cold and hot pressed) from Temu and I'm very happy with that combination. It's also very affordable.
Thank you for all your hard work! Profoundly informative and helpful video❤️
This is amazing !!! You're my inspiration for my channel in so thankful because I'm loving it id love some love
I know this video was a lot of work, Mako! Thank you!~ Happy new year!! xoxo

I am really happy! I was also struggling! I thought that the watercolors I was using were not good, I bought many but I wasn't satisfied 😢 but now I know that the paper I was using was not good! And now I am satisfied with the paper I bought! 😆😆
Thank you soooo much 😄😄😄 for helping me 😄😄😄

This really helped me cuz I’m a beginner in painting and I need to get a good sketch book for watercolor so thanks
Great advice as always. I'm planning on buying my first watercolor set for my birthday in March and I was thinking if I should invest in watercolor paper. Now I know that I definitely should ❤️ I just need to find a place where I can get some that isn't overpriced
Thanks for the very useful info !
OMG THIS WAS SOOO USEFUL THANKS MAKO
✌✌
Thank you mako it's really helpful love you so much 😍❤️
Wow, Amazing Video ❤ Thank You!
😍thanks for this video mako
I love your videos! They give me sooooo many ideas and tips!☺🤗
Amazing and helpful as usual 💚
Such a hard worker... Lov u mako😍😘
You just addressed my great degree of frustration when no matter how well I think I am following tutorials my attempts on Canson Montval look disappointing.
Love this really really enjoyed the video mako❤️💕
The nicest watercolor paper that I've seen was Canson Heritage 300lbs Rough 100% cotton paper, but it's over $16 a sheet.
Hi mako! I like all watercolor paper but arches is the best
Thank u for this video 😍 as i have to order things online these are very helpful to me 🙏🙏😇💗
Very interesting and helpful.
It isn't a bad paper! Just didn't work that well with cheap paint!
@@Makoccino thank you for your answer ! I'm willing to try to paint the stones ! Have you ever tried painting on black watercolor paper ?
Not yet but I would love to do that! Metallic watercolors look amazing on it!
@@Makoccino I'm willing to try too ! I just need to find metallic watercolor :)
I'm not sure if my paper isn't good or not bc i know that my watercolours are crap 😂
that's why I said you should put your not needed watercolours on a giveaway when you asked on ig what to do with them bc there are more people like me who just can't afford them no matter what, so...please😂
Lol same
Your content is so good
Plus you are so calm😊😊
Btw,you’re videos help me improve my art a lot!
Love your work ❤💛💚💙💜
