😂😂😂 Guilty! I ventured from graphite drawing to inexpensive Reeves watercolor on a whim many many moons ago and I used my strathmore bristol smooth paper for many pieces before I knew there was a paper dedicated to watercolor. Hey! We all start somewhere ❤
I tooo love my waterbrushes. I even enjoy some of the more inexpensive, heavier flowing waterbrushes that most people would toss for my larger washes...soo convenient.
I recently discovered your channel and love your snarky humor!

Thank you for this video. I throughly enjoyed it 😂. I really appreciate your pointing out that the Hobby Lobby canvass’s are Duck Cloth! So here’s some information for you, which you probably already know…… these canvases may not be so “cheap”. ( I wonder if it’s called duck cloth because a waterproofing has been applied to one side? Remember the old saying, …..like water off a duck’s back.)
“Canvas comes in two forms: plain canvas and duck canvas. Duck canvas gets its name from the Dutch word, doek, which means cloth, and duck fabric is a heavy-duty cotton fabric. Duck cloth is a type of canvas, and duck and canvas can be used for similar projects, depending on the weight and strength of textile needed. Duck is usually even more sturdy and holds shape better than standard canvas.
Both canvas and duck are plain-woven fabrics, but there are a few differences between them:
Duck is more tightly woven than standard canvas.
Duck also has a classification system, established in the 1920s. Duck is graded on a scale of 1 to 12, with 12 being the lightest fabric and 1 being the heaviest.
Duck is made only from cotton, hence it is sometimes referred to as cotton duck canvas or cotton duck fabric.

Duck is a cotton fiber, heavier than broadcloth* and lighter than canvas. It is a woven fiber and the cloth can be smooth or rough. I use t for outdoor pillows and for toddler jeans for grandkids (comes in many colors). Sometimes it’s used for sails and lean-to’s. My theory is that sailors named it when they’d lower the boom and sails would flap and they would yell: DUCK!!! (That’s just IMHO.)

This is lots of fun, and I love some of the same stuff you chose. You're kidding about holding the pencil with the overhand grip, though, right? You might want to watch the Proko video on how to hold a pencil. The deal with drawing from the wrist is that it's hard to work big, and just as hard to get really nice smooth circles. Neither way is wrong, but using the whole arm is definitely useful, so you might be missing out. Cotton duck is just a kind of cotton - but you were kidding about that, too, right? Anyway, keep up the fun content. Thanks!

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  Месяц назад

I'm glad you enjoyed this. I was not kidding about the overhand grip but I also do not work big. When I draw it's on an 8x10 as the biggest or more likely an 8x8. I understand that going bigger it is beneficial to draw with the whole arm. I was being funny about it saying there is no overarching rule and it just depends on what you're doing that should determine how you do it. I was joking about the cotton duck but there are a lot of people who commented on that as well. 😂 I do not take myself very seriously so I do joke around a lot on this channel. Thank you for your kind words and I will keep having as much fun as I can here. 🙂

It's a bad name choice for a fabric. :) Cotton duck is a type of cotton fabric.
Thanks for a very entertaining video.

Oh man! I hope you read this comment!
Listen, about your watercolor palette... (The bigger one)
Okay, so you took out the middle part, to put your full pans with the magnets... my question is (and I am sorry, Im struggling here cause English is not my first language, so I hope I make sense).... the bottom of your box, is it flat?!!!
    Let me explain!
A while back I took away the metal thingy where the pans are held, to do what you did with yours, but the bottom of mine is uneven, it has the bottom like your smallest palette.
Anyway, there was no way I could use a magnet. I was so frustrated.
I cut some cardboard and place it on the bottom to have a flat surface and then glued my pans. 🙄 (Wish I could show you 😢)
It sort of works, but I have to keep changing it from time to time, because, you know, water.
I have been looking high and low for a watercolor palette with a flat bottom with no luck. I found a small one with a flat bottom, but I need a bigger one, like the one you have which is the same I have with the cardboard on the bottom. 🙄
Is yours flat?!? If so, can you tell me the brand?
I AM SO SORRY THE LONG COMMENT!
And again, I hope u understand both my English, and what I'm trying to explain!
Thx for this video. Nice as usual. ❤
    Greetings from Puerto Rico. 😊

Your English is probably better than mine. 😂
I know exactly what you are talking about. No, the bottom of my palette is not flat however I also don't use flat magnets. I use small round rare earth magnets. They are very strong and hold even on the uneven surface. You can see the small ripple between the pans sometimes but I have never had any of them fall out or even jiggle around while traveling. It's important to get the right magnet. I'll do a video on this soon since I'm going to be going through all my watercolor palettes soon. I hope that helps. Let me know if you need any more info.

      @@IllustrationsByPeteGiggle 🤭
I have not used the Stonehenge black yet. I will pick some up. I’m more of a water colorist and charcoal portrait artist than anything.
Daniel Smith is the very best watercolor in my personal opinion. Although I do use some of the W/N professional as well and interchange them often.
As for brushes, you wouldn’t like mine but I do have a few of the A brushes but for my style I need the longer water holding abilities. I find your hints about controlling the plastic water brushes very interesting and I shall give it a go.
      Thank you 😊

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  5 дней назад +1

I really enjoyed the Stonehenge for gouache but I've also done a little colored pencil work on it as well.
I am a Daniel Smith fan boy. I love their paints. I have never tried professional W&N but they are on my list. Right now I'm incorporating QoR with my DS in my main palette. They seem to work very differently but I like how they work together.
I just started using some bigger quill brushes and although it is challenging for me, I do enjoy them. I enjoy anything that challenges me to change what I'm doing to suit how it needs to be used rather than me just saying it doesn't work for the way I do things. 🙂
