I played this game tonight and it was a blast as always. I was the doctor and actually saved a life first round! Second round, that same dude I saved was killed by the mafia. So, I knew it was someone in mine and his social group that was mafia. It was a large group with people we didn't all know. After getting my innocent roommate killed while trying to talk my way out of being lynched, we, the citizens, actually ended up getting all the mafia. The sheriff was good with social ques, she also believed I was innocent, so her and I convinced the civs who was bad. The mafia took a few, including the beloved sheriff, but they ultimately lost. We didn't play with extra roles aside from the "muffin man" that just handed a muffin to people randomly at night--don't ask why we added that role lol. I will say playing with friends can be detrimental since everyone thinks they knew who is who. Randos are just better since no one knows each other. The man I saved and personally know very well accused me of being mafia! The look on his face when I was called to heal someone 😅 He was thinking "Shoot, glad I accused someone else over you." Anyways, great explanation. You should make a mafia strategy video that dives into how to win.

It becomes a game of chance honestly since there is not a lot of information to deduce anything apart from personal knowledge of the people's interest

Sure, in that way it’s a lot like Poker, but as it’s a party game you can pressure players in a more fun way. With more characters more can be revealed during the night phases as well. Unlike poker you get to see who was lying or truthful after each game so each subsequent game will open up more strategy. Definitely makes it unique and great for parties.

ADDITIONAL OPTIONAL CHARACTERS
For large groups (16+), you might want to assign some other special roles to players to add more depth and excitement to the game. The judge should explain at the beginning of the game that additional powers have been awarded to these character cards and describe what they are before dealing. The judge asks these characters to open their eyes one at a time to enact their role during the night phase.
Warring mafia gangs
In games where all of the mafia characters are in play, you may want to pit two warring gangs against each other. The gameplay is the same as usual, but the judge must make clear that there are two mafia gangs, and who belongs to each the easiest way to divide them is mafia men/mafia women, as this is less likely to get confusing). The judge will then instruct each mafia team to open their eyes separately during the night and make a kill. Make it more fun by thinking up mafia gang names for each.
LAWYER
During the night he chooses someone to defend. That person cannot be tried and executed if nominated the next day. It's up to the judge to decide whether the lawyer is allowed to defend the same person every night.
DRAG QUEEN
During the night phase the drag queen can be asked to randomly switch the cards of two players, thus changing their identities.
The players then have to continue to play the game according to these new identities. The judge will decide whether to wake the drag queen every night, or just occasionally.
FIREFIGHTER
Can perform the same life-saving role as the doctor when awoken during the night.
YAKUZA
This mafioso can be assigned a secondary power where she can choose to sacrifice herself from the second night onward and select an innocent to join the mafia. She might do this if she suspects she knows the identity of the detective or doctor, deciding to take one for the team and handicap the innocents by converting one of these special characters to mafiosi. She must then retire from the game herself.
THE GODFATHER
Bring the Godfather out of retirement! He's back as the head of the International Mafia, but he's so closely guarded that no one knows his identity and he appears every inch the innocent civilian.
He awakens every night and acts with the other mafiosi. If the detective questions him, he appears to be a civilian. But if he is killed, the mafia forfeit the game.
