Aunt Clara - my favorite character from that show. When she bungled something, she still managed to do it with a lot of class.

I've seen several black out episodes of TV shows and the one thing that I never understood is how the telephone always works.
Traditional landlines, like cellular towers, have backup power generation so that the current supplied to the phone outlet or jack is continuous. In some cases, the phone outlet power is boosted by backup batteries, which can fail if the power outage lasts more than several hours.
Back in the day, Ma Bell was reliable. Her landlines had backup generators to power the system -- including her very reliable telephones. Old Ma Bell and her Babies ( Baby Bells) such as South Central Bell. Ma Bell handled inter-regional long distance calls, and the Baby Bells handled regional call service. When telephones lasted decades.

Even land lines of today have backup power to operate.
That's how it actually worked, back then. The power for the phones came through the phone lines. The phones were not plugged into the electrical system. So long as the phone company had power, the phones worked. As others have commented, the phone companies had backup power, so even in a power outage, the phones continued to work.

Some doorbells did have battery backups; at the time of installation it was considered the latest in technology.

Endora had the best flowing incantations.
