When she was talking about how intense all the scents would have been all I kept thinking was how nearly every product we use on our clothes and bodies is scented. Scent is still a big part of our culture for sure, although not with the same religious and ritual connotations
Perfume was also sacred to Bast
Wish the option "Give a heart to comments" was possible, because your comment is really nice!!
Perfumes were important in the old days because otherwise people smelled bad. When the temperature is 102° in the shade...and there is no shade... There's a lot of sweating going on. Add to that the fact that bathing was done in oil and not soap and water and you get stinky people. Gotta throw some herbs and resins around to cover it up.😂😂
I just love learning about the history of beauty and stuff. We never hear about this in school
Ditto
Schools is not that cultural
Which is a shame, they seem to weed out anything that would make people actually interested in history
Same here ❤
@@melissamenchaca9121 SO true !
I would love a video on female pharos. How they came to power, were depicted, treated after thier deaths. I know they tried to erase Hatchepsut but was that the norm or was she just wildly unpopular.
That would be a great topic for a video - Hatshepsut especially is fascinating and her story is more complex than is often presented.
There were female Pharos ?
@@repurposedrestoration1498 yup
I kept imaging of China's first Empress who united China😂 why!!?
cindy S.Melecio - Pharos (pl. Pharoi ) is neutral in gender (as lighthouses tend to be) though in the Greek, Pharos (as in The Great Pharos of Alexandria - One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) does take the masculine article (Ο Φάρος). Pharaohs, on the other hand, were
almost exclusively male - though there are a few notable exceptions of female Pharaohs (Hatshepsut and Cleopatra are the best known).
May I make a suggestion, please? Could you, at some point, make a video about magic in ancient Egypt? I am soooo interested in the topic, I would love to know about their rituals, their beliefs and their texts! LOVE your overall work so much! Thank you in advance!
Great suggestion! We will definitely add magic to the list, because John does a lot of work on Egyptian magical practices.
Yes please 🙋🏿♀️
@@VintageEgyptologist Yes!
Yes, and alchemy! Or is magic and alchemy the same thing?!
I just finished reading “Ancient Egyptian Magic” by Christina Riggs, it definitely gives a good overview of the topic, and it’s a beautiful book to look at, which is always a bonus :)
Do I have any interest in makeup
No
Did I watch the entire video
Yes
Why
Because it's just so intellectually stimulating and well done
One of the best compliments to receive!
i love vintage egyptologist, you can clearly see her passion shine through her eyes every time something or someone from ancient Egypt is mentioned
This is incredible, please do not stop making these awesome videos. I can't get enough! Thank you again.
Thank you!
The Egypt channel we all deserve
How very kind!!!
I absolutely agree! 👍
Thank you Doctor Darnell and a warm welcome to your guest Michelle Coursey. Another fascinating and educational look into the culture of ancient Egypt. This is the kind of knowledge rarely given more than a passing mention and yet, to me, is the quality of information that I feel furthers our connection to, and understanding of, a people that lived thousands of years ago. Videos on the minutiae of Egyptian culture help to humanize, to add color to, a picture of the people who actually walked and lived amongst the streets and temples we hear of most often. I’m off to check out the vintage makeup video you did with Michelle.
Looking forward to your next.
That is such a kind comment, thank you!
Her voice can really get your attention. I can seat all day listening to her lectures.
We TOTALLY need a Cleopatra video!💙
It shall come!
And Hatshepsut please!
Perhaps this is too picky, but it seems odd to refer to Cleopatra as Greek. Macedonian, mostly, or perhaps Hellenistic, but not much Greek in her bloodline I believe.
@@npgibson69 macedonians are greek
I would fly out, rent a flat and enroll in all her classes. She explains stuff in such a enthusiastic and passionate way that I wish all my college teachers had when when I was in college.
Interesting that experimental archeology has not tried to reproduce Egyptian makeup. Mass spectrometry from remains in pots and jars should have given clues as to the underlying mediums and binders and surviving mortar and pestles an idea of how fine the grind was.
I will actually have to double check recent scholarship - perhaps there is more information about that topic! Thank you for your interesting comment.
@@VintageEgyptologist actually, it might be interesting to reach out to Lisa Eldridge here on RUclips. She is a makeup historian and at one point was the creative director for Lancôme. In her most recent book she breaks down Egyptian makeup and dissects the particular resources and ingredients used in some detail. Very interesting stuff. According to her book, from what I remember, the makeup was not only used for aesthetic purposes, but was *functional*. It’s chemical makeup was able to defend their eyes from diseases like trachoma, though don’t quote me on that.
I read somewhere that Kohl was used around the eyes on both men, women and children in Egypt to protect their eyes from the intense glare of the sun.
Also check out Erin Parsons! She's made several videos experimenting with reproducing something similar to various different cosmetics that have been found based on what was in them. She isn't a historian, but I really like her approach!
Welsh twins gang where you at??
Right here!
I just came from there straight here!!!❤❤❤
I am so thrilled that The Welsh Twins, Robert and James, sent me to your video. I am subscribed to both of you now. Their twin videos are just fun, but their personal channels are more teaching with personality. I would love to see a collaboration between you all in the future. I think people are missing out by not knowing about you ladies. Collaborations may drive a bunch of views to your channels, and could really bring in some new subscribers like myself. Onto watch y'all's 1920s portion!
I have to mention that the youtube captions interpreted Hatshepsut as hot chocolate. But, more importantly, I'm very happy to see both of you discussing historical concepts of makeup. I am a woman, and I have mixed feelings about makeup as it currently is. To know that makeup has been around for thousands of years, and has been used primarily, or at least, most ubiquitously, in the context of celebration and merriment is nice to hear. I'm able to lessen my skepticism of makeup through confirmation that makeup has indeed been worn for fun rather than for societal approval.
Fixing Hatshepsut now - I am committed to "no more craptions!"
@@VintageEgyptologist I really appreciate how you speak slowly and clearly enough that the captions are able to keep up. It is so frustrating watching a video and having to keep rewinding so I can read all the captions.
This has always been something I've been interested in thank you so much for uploading this video
I smiled the entire video...two perfect ladies, to whom I would certainly be best friends with.
Michelle is awesome (and her makeup is always perfect!)
First time watching these ladies, SOOOO CHARMING AND LOVELY!!!! Yes I had to scream it. You two are so smart and beautiful. Thank you for sharing with us❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I have always been interested by make-up throughout history. So thank you so much for this super interesting episode, I have learnt so much🖤
I’ve been obsessed with ancient Egypt my entire life!!! Please make more educational videos and content! This is wonderful
Same here ❤
Wonderful program thank you 💄 . I just wanted to vote for that episode on Hathor - I'm dying for that one! How she was worshipped, what she represented, how she was depicted, her symbols, her story - in short - everything! 🤗
OOOOH! Loved this video!! 😍 Can't wait for the episode on Cleopatra VII!! 😄
Omg yay! I've been waiting for this video to come out 😭 my esthetician side is screaming haha I love this! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful piece of history with us 💕
So, wigs were like hats.
When thinking about how ancient civilizations handled make up you naturally imagine us modern people travel "back in time" to look at the make up first hand. What I think would be very interesting would be to have ancient egyptians travel "forward in time" and hear what they have to say about our make up, skin care products and wigs. I imagine it would be a rather lively discussion! :)
I was always fascinated by the Egyptian culture and their lifestyles.. This channel is actually great.. and I am so happy that I actually got to know real Egyptologists... Keep going! Wishing you all the best!🎆❤️
Am I the only one from the Welsh twins to come check this out??
😂
Love this thank you! Can you do a video on perfume/fragrance in ancient Egypt? Topics like what was popular, what had significance (like you mentioned myrrh manifesting God), and known recipes. That would be fabulous!
I’m a practicing witch, and a lot of what we are taught claims to be Egyptian in origin, could you possibly do a video on the magickal and spiritual practices of Egypt, or if there was an equivalent of an “Egyptian Witch”? Such a fan of the Drs. Darnell, keep up the amazing work, you guys ❤️
Same! I'd love to see a historical view on that topic :)
+
This would be fascinating !
Going even deeper. I was raised in hoodoo and Ifa which is closer related to kemetic spirituality than paganism( im also a rootworker) and I will tell you that these forms of spirituality are sacred because they are ancestral, and basically... you cannot ask someone elses ancestors to " work" for you. Of course you can still learn the concepts etc.. but as far as being able to use it for divination etc.. its a no. A lot of things that are African are ancestral and very complicated.
These 2 are fabulous! I love all this information. I love the short black modern cleopatra bob! Thanks for this amazing video! ✨𓋹✨
This was truly wonderful to watch. Can't wait for the next episode! ❤ ❤ ❤
as an Egyptian, I like how you address topics about ancient Egypt more in depth because yes there are a lot of misconceptions, new subscriber! and looking forward to more of your videos
Yay thank you for another video!! So exciting!!!
I love love love love these topics and how you talk about them. Looking foward to see more :)
As a beauty therapist with an interest in Egypt and Vintage lifestyles/beauty and fashion, I find this SUPER interesting thank you for making this😍😍
OMG! So excited to see both Colleen and Michelle together!
I always wanted to be an Egyptologist growing up, oh well that didn’t happen but I’m thankful for youtube and people like you.
Same bruh lol
Same here 🕵🏼♀️ I was obsessed with all the epic movies like the ten commandments and cleopatra and always thought I’d grow up studying the history for a living and traveling to Egypt 🤓
Your energy is so beautiful & fresh. You can really tell your passion for this subject. It makes me very much interested and hooked into the information as well, thank you for this :)
Thank you for sharing all your knowledge with us. I can listen to you all day!
Colleen, I think this is my favorite of your videos thus far. Your knowledge and insight bring that vanished world vividly to life. Thank you.
You are by far one of my favorite professors ever!!! Pleasantly surprised and glad I stumbled across your channel.
I ordered the best organic popcorn, for that Cleopatra episode
I could listen to you talk for hours! Loved this
Wow, thank you!
Me too!
Thank you so much Dr Darnell for once again an incredible piece of educational content. The images and scents of these scenes of life in ancient Egypt truly bloomed with your words, it felt like I was there.
Stay safe.
Thank you!! Egypt is a very special place for me. Loved this! 🥰
Yay, a new video from you guys! *-* Your channel is one of my favorites on youtube nowadays! Love your videos and I look forward to seeing this channel grow more!
They are both fabulous
Thank you so much for the video! You guys are great! 😁😁😁😁
I'm also psyched that you received so many questions from your audience. You're really bringing ancient Egypt and egyptology to so many curious people. 😊😊😊
This was so fascinating and informative! I love your work. It's so refreshing to see such good content where I can always learn something new.
I would love to see a video on Ancient Egyptian music.
Just found you guys from the video you did with Rachel maksy and im now super excited to binge your content, ive loved learning about Egypt since i was little (granted my Egyptian great uncle who'd been a teacher when he still lived there helped with thst before he passed away) im excited to have something reignite this love and to get me back into it
I was excited for this video to drop and I am not disappointed 💕
That is so wonderful to hear!
How did I not know my favorite Egyptologist and fashion queen had a RUclips channel? Regardless I am so happy your video popped up in my feed. I have videos to binge watch while I knit. Plus my students K-12 and college are going to love you and this channel.
Love this!!!
This was very interesting - thank you for sharing your knowledge! Could have listened to it for hours.
i adore this channel, pls never stop uploading
I've seen so many statues, pictures and read some literature but never knew that their actual hair was showing underneath. I assumed it was a styling choice of the wig hair, and until now hadn't come across that info
I imagine its kinda like 18th century wigs. Everyone knew they were wigs so they didn't bother trying to make them blend or look realistic. They took them for what they were as opposed to our modern use of wigs which is meant to be very 'natural' looking. Hell, even the 1920s they had those metallic bullion embroidered silver and gold 'flapper' wigs which were entirely made of emberoidery thread (or some such similar material)
Another wonderful episode, loved the vanity set!
Wow! You ladies are awesome!!
More, please. More, more, more.....! Thank you for all your information and insights.
I love your work! Delighted to subscribe!
This was really fun, thanks!
this is fascinating thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Yes please make a video about Cleopatra, her makeup and skin care routine! Love your channel!
That small amount of unlikes. Maat knows who you are. That just increased the weight of your heart to the ostrich feather in the scale.
It's not from an ostrich but from Thoth himself
Love your videos so much! The passion Dr. Colleen has for Ancient Egypt is so evident in the way she expresses her immense knowledge! I was wondering if perhaps she could make a video of the artwork of ancient Egypt and how it stayed the same after so many thousands of years up until the Greeks took over...
Loved it!! You answer many of my questions 💄❤
Oh please have more videos with Dr. Colleen Darnell, I love this video, I learn so much from this on Ancient Egyptian make-up and culture. I have seeing other videos with her but nothing like this. I knew she was extremely educated in her studies in Egyptian culture and archeology but this was so different and fun to watch. I just subscribed to your channel and love it.
Thank you very much for this new fascinating tale about Ancient Egypt 😻. I am eager to hear more🍀🌻
More to come!
I love this!! Thank you so much for always working hard to make such interesting videos for us!!
You are so welcome!
Loved this video !
This video was very informative!! Thank you for sharing
Just found you on a site watching the Mummy, and I’m instantly smitten
I’m so glad I found this I’m currently writing my thesis on women in new kingdom Egypt and this will be a huge help!!!
15:15 Gal Gadot is playing Cleopatra in an upcoming film, I just hope it’s going to be a more historically accurate portrayal of her and the actual time period
well it cant be 'accurate' because nobody knows what she wore as a fact. it can be historically inspired but thats about it and lets be honest, they aren't going to get Gal Gadot and not exploit her 'sexy' factor. I do hope they go more Greco Roman with her styling but with the outrage about her not being 'black' I imagine this film might never come out...
So is she black or white?
@@adavis222 3/4 Macedonian Greek + 1/4 Syrian/Persian mix. Not Egyptian or black. Her ancestors were from Macedonia and in Egypt as rulers they married brothers to sisters to maintain the Greek royal bloodline and purity.
@@adavis222 As per the comment below - she was an inbred European colonizer in Africa.
@Luna del Rey I think the person meant that by stating Macedonian Greek because modern Macedonia and ancient Macedonia have different borders now. Ancient covered less land, so most of modern Macedonia wouldn't cover Alexander the Great's homeland (only a small portion of modern day Macedonia is ancient Macedonia) Hope that made sense I'm really bad at explaining stuff 💖
If love to know more about hieroglyphs , maybe a part 3! As well as maybe their clothes or fashion
Thank you for this information, I have been researching to teach a lesson on beauty products in Egypt to our English and Egyptian Arabic students!
I'm sooooooo grateful I find out that you have your own channel now💚💚💚 listening to you is a delight 😍
Thank you!!!
That flapper look is crazy 😮 in a good way. I wasn't expecting that.
Thank you!
So much fascinating information to take in!
I love your videos... there full of interesting information 🖤
I never want these episodes to end.
This was so engaging. I love learning.
I really enjoy your videos I have always been drawn to ancient Egypt.
New fav channel.
WHOA, that statue had a mustache! I’ve never seen that before! I’m so excited that this channel came up! I immediately subscribed. I’m so happy you touched on the perfumed wax cones!! I’m obsessed with those!
It's interesting how little things have changed in terms of the wigs being obvious. It's a total status symbol just like the rich ladies in Socal who have 10 pounds of hair extensions. Nobody without 4C hair has a tree trunk sized ponytail, they want everyone to KNOW that they can afford to purchase pounds of human hair and then have it skillfully sewn in. It's like in 7-rings " You like my hair? Gee thanks! Just bought it!" Ari's massive ponytail is iconic partially because it looks EXPENSIVE.
I can just listen to them all day
Omg thank u this video is really cool!
So interesting, thanks for sharing!!
This was so interesting!!
Thank you!
I love these ladies retro 1920s look!
I love story about Egyptian beauty, games, romance, painting, worship. Anyway, the makeup is my fave story. I already have a makeup recipes of Ancient Egyptian in form paper. I love it too.
great video!
I just found ur channel & luv it , fav. stuff !
this is so interesting!!!
Loving your content as always - absolutely fascinating. I hope Lisa Eldridge gets to see this. Loved her recent vid on her antique makeup collection.
It's on my list, thanks for the reminder! Have you bought any of her amazing lipsticks? Also on my list! 💫💄💫
YES THANK YOU
History and make up - I'm in heaven! Love this so much , did you ever do the Cleopatra video?
I love your insta! I am so excited about the content here!
