    The Victorian part reminded me of something my mother in law told me she used to do. My mother-in-law was born 1926, so her parents were literally ‘Victorian ‘. As a teen, she was never permitted to wear makeup, so when she went out to the dance halls, she would take her prayer book with her. In the ladies room she would wet the RED leather cover of the book and rub the stain from it from her fingers, onto her lips!! 💋. I love the irony... prayer book = lipstick 💄!

      I was a teen in the 80s/early 90s. Heavy, crazy makeup (as she wore here). But i was allowed only mascara and lip gloss until I was a sophomore. By then, I was so use to my minimalist look, I didn't part with it. And I still wear very little makeup today. Even when I do vintage fashion, I wear the minimal amount necessary to achieve my look ;)

      You should feel lucky, in a way. Men aren't under the pressure to look certain way and hide their flaws, get told you need make up because otherwise you're ugly. Make up where it can be and is a form of art and fascinating, it's incredibly oppressive and harmful to women and little girls, just know that.
      If you want to wear make up, then that's up to you. There's plenty of men in media who do use make up, though just touch ups rather than a lot of colors, but still. You need to change it if you'd like.

    • @NostalgiCrazy
      @NostalgiCrazy 8 лет назад +84

      LadyDynamitez Yeah I understand it's both a good and bad thing. It's the same way for guys but in the opposite direction: Man without makeup = manly, accepted, attractive. Man _with_ makeup = unmanly, wrong, shameful, etc. Society and gender norms have ruined everyone's self esteem one way or another and I wish I could change it.

    • @theoriginalsuzycat
      @theoriginalsuzycat 8 лет назад +9

      +Fresh_Water from what I've read the French aristocracy's parties would have lost their allure pretty quickly. You had to wear clothes so lavish you actually bankrupted yourself to pay for them, and when you went to court you HAD to attend things whether you felt OK or not, and you had to stand up all night unless the King liked you enough to let you sit down. So you'd be standing up all night in clothes that weighed more than you did, in heels, on a stone floor, in a draught, desperately wishing the King would go to bed so you could, too. Plus I've been to Versailles and the kitchens were a long way from the rest of the palace, so if you were at one of the King's soirees and you wanted some food, by the time it got to you it would be cold. And apparently women of the court would sometimes put a chamber pot under their skirts so they could pee standing up in the room because you literally could not leave without permission. No fun!

    • @BooRadleyTube
      @BooRadleyTube 8 лет назад

      +theoriginalsuzycat That chamber pot thing certainly shatters any remaining allusions we may have had. I like indoor plumbing too much to go back in time.

      Interesting, but with due respect, somewhat ruined by the wash-out lighting CGI-style lighting that virtually eliminates any lines, wrinkles or "flaws" on your face. Would be nice if you did a truly naturally lit video with no tricks.

    • @RomTheVacuumedSpider
      @RomTheVacuumedSpider 8 лет назад +39

      +DDumbrille Its supposed to be a fun, educational video. I doubt she was thinking of "hiding her wrinkles". Is that really all you took away from the video?

    • @DDumbrille
      @DDumbrille 8 лет назад

      Amanda Tooke No certainly not -- it was very educational. But overall, I think the lighting tricks, etc., that I mentioned, sends a subtle message (i.e. her skin is so flawless!) that some might think they can never live up to, because they don't realize the tricks that are involved.

    • @SemaAvalith
      @SemaAvalith 8 лет назад +6

      +DDumbrille I never had that thought cross my mind while watching this video...? I mean I wished I could see some of the Egyptian and Flapper Era makeup more closely in detail, but I didn't think "damn, I can't see her usual wrinkles and imperfections with all these effects - she must have perfect skin!"
      besides when she shows her no makeup face, her imperfections are clearly visible o_o

    Fun Fact: In 14th/15th century Europe, an extremely popular trend for women was to pluck or shave the hairline back almost to the top of the head. Why? Beauty standards be crazy.
    Also, I think it would be fair to say that the medieval link between makeup and deception exists to this day. As someone else in the comments said, no makeup = "Are you sick? You look terrible!" But light makeup = "no makeup," and heavy makeup = "Ugh, I don't like girls who wear too much makeup!" Dudes, you gotta make up (haha) your damn minds. (Or stop judging women on their appearance.)

    • @scoliosisandbadnailbeds
      @scoliosisandbadnailbeds 4 года назад +18

      I’ve heard the hairline thing has to do with copying Queen Elizabeth I, because she had such a high forehead and she was a standard for beauty.

    • @mandypandy111ify

      They would shave the hairline because, bigger(longer) the forhead the smarter(wiser) women is.

      +Lisa Eldridge I want to see a tutorial for the 1920's silent movie look!! I'm obsessed with that era and I've seen so many tutorials on 20's makeup but none of them look as authentic as what you did here!

    What I also found interesting that kohl used in Ancient Egypt as eyeliner had antibacterial properties and actually did protect theri eyes againsts inflammations and diseases that were abundant in those regions.

    Am i the only one that actually starts liking unibrows on women? I do think they can look really original and natural on someone's (not everyone's) face. The way you did it, i loved it!

      Omg me too! I really started to think that I was the only one lol
      I think most people can rock a unibrow you just need to place and trim it as you would usually do

    The Vamps look is GORGEOUS! You are inspirational, Lisa! You enrich the beauty industry and teaches the public that makeup does not equate vanity (something I heard while growing up). Thank you for your videos!! God bless you!
