We think about how we felt about them while they were alive because it’s a manner of holding on to them. How who treated who? The Media treated the Queen, or how The family treated Diana? The flag is only lowered for the death of a monarch. Also, Diana was no longer a member of the Royal family. Giving this speech meant that the Queen had to break Royal protocol. She was under no official obligation to react publicly. . What she wanted to do was keep the young boys at Balmoral and away from the media attention. She was being a grandmother. She was trying to protect them. The media forced the family back to London because they wanted to see them.
I remember hearing the news on the day when Diana died. It was the last day of summer, we were coming back from camping. Last days of summer holidays always felt depressing, but that day it felt like the entire joy from the world was sucked away.

@𝖆𝖓𝖌𝖊𝖑 OK I see where this is coming from. You watched The Crown and take that highly fictionalised story for granted. But in fact, it's a far cry from reality. Here are some facts: 1. The Villa Windsor in Paris was never in possession of the Fayed family or, for that matter, of the British Crown. It has been owned by the City of Paris and leased by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, then Mohamed (and not Dodi) Al-Fayed. So it was not his to offer it to the Queen in the first place. 2. The belongings of the Windsors left in the villa were indeed bought by Al-Fayed (again, the father!), but not a single item was offered to the Royal Family as a gift - nor was it taken back from the Villa by them as depicted in the film. They were auctioned off at Sotheby's a few months after Diana and Dodi's fatal accident. Though the bidders remained anonymous, it is believed that the most important items were actually purchased back by the Royal Family. But most importantly, this happens months after the Queen's Diana speech. 3. This is not a news anchor reading an obituary. It's the Queen paying respect, if reluctantly, to the late mother of her grandchildren. It's about Diana and Diana only.
At this very moment, I'm listening to Imelda's speech on TV (dubbed in Portuguese) and watching the Queen's speech in English on RUclips, altogether. Imelda did an AMAZING job!
The queen was in a hard position here. She's the LITERAL QUEEN she can't be seen in public bawling her eyes out like so many. She as a leader must remain professional and constant. She was a constant in the chaos. Looking back i realize now how difficult this must have been for her. I think the queen was a wonderful lady and really had a kind heart. When i rewatched this as a teenager i thought she was cold and heartless but i realize now the power she was trying to uphold. She's trying to address a nation. This couldn't have been easy for her.
I think the queen really had think about making that speech. And she was criticised for leaving it that long. I believe she was lost with how to approach the people on top of dealing with it as a Mother and Grandparent.
@@isabellezablocki7447 Plenty of better examples. She was a rich kid who had money to cushion a lush lifestyle and do minor charity work you morons ate up.
I remember this... I remember thinking it was too late for her to comment and the speech itself felt cold and rehearsed. It lacked an element of genuine emotion when Diana was a character who managed to stir up emotions in the people she represented. Diana and her humanitarian work deserved the emotions of the people... and the queen unable to show emotion, really showed the distance between the royals and the common people.

Try watching it happen live and watch diana getting removed from the car with minor injuries in a car that has the front end smashed in to hearing she has died from critical injuries and seeing the whole car crushed up... Then tell me what your view would be.
The most dramatic moment of the Queen’s reign. You can see she had her back to the window in this speech and the crowd outside the Palace looked menacing. She was basically saying sorry for how Diana was treated, but you could tell in her eyes that she was annoyed to be put into the position she was in that week, what with the flag etc. A stark contrast to her son King Charles 25 years later, when he paid tribute to his mother. He of course paid tribute to Diana as well as the late Queen, when he said “May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest” as those words were sung when his ex wife was carried out of the Abbey on the day of her funeral. The Queen saved not just her own skin in this speech, but probably her son’s too.
You are both foolish. Elizabeth broke protocols for Diana's death in order to properly express the volume of her respect to the late Princess. Do you even acknowledge that? No, you point the finger at her majesty and blame her for a tragedy she did not cause. You do this instead of acknowledging that the ones to blame for her premature passing are the public- because we idolised and worshipped Diana to a point where she wasn't treated as human, where her health and very life was put second to bombardments of exlcusive photographs from the Paparazzi that were prioritised. If we hadn't been so obsessed with her, they wouldn't have been.
My gut feeling 25 years ago about this speech was that she didn't care about Diana back then and doesn't care one bit about her subjects grieving either. This speech felt like she was forced to swallow a big pill on account of her grandchildren's grief. None of that gut feeling has changed in the intervening 25 years to her death in September 2022.
I honestly think she was incredibly angry with Diana for having been so careless with her own safety. The Queen DID very much love her grandchildren and the feeling was mutual. Witnessing their pain as she and her husband attempted to console them probably just made her more frustrated and mad. I'm still pissed at Diana too, for not putting on her damned seatbelt, for not thinking of her kids and refusing to waste her time with a stupid playboy who literally put her life at risk and got her killed. Yes, the Queen pretty much had to make this little speech because her subjects were not just sad but also very pissed off about how Diana had been treated for so long. But I think she was genuinely upset; it was just more for her son and grandchildren than for Diana, and in context, I can't blame her.
@@denverdubois5835 lmao not you blaming Diana for the shit that happened to her? Also even with a seatbelt on, she would've suffered huge injuries and they took so long taking her to hospital that she died. Go do some research please.
A. Her Majesty said all the right things, in the right way.. even though it broke Royal traditions.. B. Its hard to believe that 25 YEARS... has already passed since her tragic passing.
"Since last Sunday's dreadful news we have seen, throughout Britain and around the world, an overwhelming expression of sadness at Diana's death. "We have all been trying in our different ways to cope. It is not easy to express a sense of loss, since the initial shock is often succeeded by a mixture of other feelings: disbelief, incomprehension, anger - and concern for those who remain. "We have all felt those emotions in these last few days. So what I say to you now, as your Queen and as a grandmother, I say from my heart. "First, I want to pay tribute to Diana myself. She was an exceptional and gifted human being. In good times and bad, she never lost her capacity to smile and laugh, nor to inspire others with her warmth and kindness. "I admired and respected her - for her energy and commitment to others, and especially for her devotion to her two boys. "This week at Balmoral, we have all been trying to help William and Harry come to terms with the devastating loss that they and the rest of us have suffered. "No-one who knew Diana will ever forget her. Millions of others who never met her, but felt they knew her, will remember her. "I for one believe that there are lessons to be drawn from her life and from the extraordinary and moving reaction to her death. "I share in your determination to cherish her memory. "This is also an opportunity for me, on behalf of my family, and especially Prince Charles and William and Harry, to thank all of you who have brought flowers, sent messages, and paid your respects in so many ways to a remarkable person. "These acts of kindness have been a huge source of help and comfort. "Our thoughts are also with Diana's family and the families of those who died with her. I know that they too have drawn strength from what has happened since last weekend, as they seek to heal their sorrow and then to face the future without a loved one. "I hope that tomorrow we can all, wherever we are, join in expressing our grief at Diana's loss, and gratitude for her all-too-short life. "It is a chance to show to the whole world the British nation united in grief and respect. "May those who died rest in peace and may we, each and every one of us, thank God for someone who made many, many people happy
Queen will be always be the QUEEN! It was an act of the great person - no matter what relationship with Diana they had - she delivered this speech to show respect and in some ways to save the Crown. If there was no statement it would have been a disaster. She said exactly what people needed to hear and the ending is perfect "made so many many people happy" Rest in peace both Diana and Queen Elizabeth!
I still remember exactly where I was when I first heard the news that Princess Diana was in a car crash. It’s tragic moments like these we never forget. Thankfully the Crown series has bought me back to history. And I knew nothing about the Queen and starting to appreciate her more.
And you cannot be talking like that, it's not right. She served her country for 70 years.. She did everything, that was supposed to be done, Diana herself said that she was a supportive and heartfelt person. I don't know 1 person who was "Happy,, of Her late Majesty's death.
She lost all of our respect because of how she and her son Charles treated Diana. They treated her like a dog and tormented her and might have even killed her. Charles has to be stripped of his crown
@@jamesbhollingsworth5452 Yes it is, especially in this instance. It only becomes “an” when the “h” is silent which, in this case, is not. So “a history” is the correct way to say it. However if you were talking about an herb, you would say “an herb” because the “h” is silent.
Lizard people are always so cold without emotion. Look at the emotions that regular commoners had and they never even talked to princess Diana but this lizard woman knew her for years and can’t even squeeze out a single emotion
this must be one of the top 10 most iconic speeches of all time. instant tears when she starts speaking, almost too late but salvaged just in time. rest in peace, diana and elizabeth.
Seriously, you saw tears? She may gotten a bit teared-eyed (which I’m not sure was genuine), but I perceived this as simply being a monotone, emotionless speech that she read off a teleprompter that someone probably wrote for her.
Where were those tears when her son abused Diana to the point of hurting herself and developing bulimia? Where was her support, when Diana struggled through depression? Her family made Diana's life a living hell. No amount of pointless pageantry after the fact will change that.
Maybe one of the better ones, but she's had what I would say more "impactful" speaches. Not to be rude be this seems a bit boilerplate almost, meaning it's a standard speech anyone would give when something tragic has happened. I know her in her heart she meant well by it but I wouldn't call it one of the best. It was welcome I'm sure though, by those who knew Diana and her family.
Im here after the Queens death in 2022. In 1997 I was 15 and I remember this like it was yesterday. I remember that she waited TOO LONG to address Princess Diana's death and this came across to me as cold! She didn't expect the world to grieve Diana they way we did. We may not have realized it at the time but this was "cancel culture" working back then! She HAD to say something because the pressure was mounting on her!
People still don't understand what The Queen was all about. She wasn't, nor was she supposed to be, some kind of figure to come out with an emotional speech. Everything she said in public, like Christmas speeches, took months of careful planning in order to address the country in just the right way. She was a stoic and level-headed figure, and people look at that as uncaring and cold.
@@tremainecole6880 Funny I respect the Queen even more for staying at Balmoral. She wasn’t on vacation at Balmoral, she was shielding her grandsons from the Media frenzy, and trying to help them come to terms with the loss. Yet everyone tried to crucify her for acting as a grandmother first and a Queen second.

Yes, i got the same feeling. Like if she talked about some stranger from Welsh Village she hardly knew. It must have been hard for her though to realise that she will have to do this „ very uncomfortable” in order to save her crown. I bet It was the hardest thing she did in her life.
Perhaps she was not so happy about the situation but as always she has done her duty. The Queen was educated not showing too much emotion! Imagine she would have cried in front of the cameras.....
Diana is up in Heaven as an Angel. She showed how imperfect good people could be. Millions love and miss her even now. You were loved Diana and still are. ❤
She knows more than we care to acknowledge. It's time for the truth to be released to the public. It's time for us to learn just how much involvement the Crown had with this catastrophic outcome
The greatest mystery for me was and remains, how and why Diana was so madly in love with Charles, until the end. A man who clearly never wanted her and played major role in her misery. And then I remember: The greatest love of all is often the unfulfilled one, when you fall for the completely wrong person.
She wasn’t in love with him…she was in love with idea of him. She cheated more than he did and it seems she cheated first. She played the media like a well tuned instrument.. she was an incredible person, it’s true, however she was the one, as it has come out through the years after her death, that often tipped the media. She did many good things. She also liked to be filmed doing them.
She was forced to do this. Refused to lower the flag, took entirely too long to put this message out due to public pressure, and probably didn't enjoy talking positively about her. It's like she's reading a book with a monotone voice.
God Bless and Rest the Soul of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Such a pillar of strength and solidarity in so many different world issues. I pray that the Royal Family continues her line of elegance and dignity.
Thank you so much for posting this. I’m 22 years old now and I can confidently say that I am unbelievably proud to be a royalist. My mother raised me to love and respect our monarch and I always have. I am unfortunately too young to remember Diana but seeing her majesty speak with such love and care is heart warming. The past few weeks have obviously been devastating. The Queens passing hit so very hard. I am lucky enough to say that myself and my mother attended her lying in state last weekend and it’s something I will never forget. We made some like minded friends for life in the (long long) cue. The wait was 100% worth it. Charles is already proving to be a good fit and my love for the monarchy has not faded.
I'm not a royalist, but still found myself stood by the Palace to watch Diana's coffin go by in '97, and also - as I was just too late to see the Queen's journey to Westminster - joined the queue and saw her laying in state that first night. Sometimes we just feel the need to witness history don't we?
I was home for holidays when my sister in law screamed Princess Diana is dead, I run from the bedroom in pain, I never met her but she was so sweet. We had a bad day at home..can never forget
I understand she and Princess Margaret used to hot tub together. Someone said Diana liked talking to Margaret, because she could empathize with being married to a man who didn’t really love her.
lets not forget helen mirran also dod an amazing job at playing the late queen! if you havent watched, now watching the crown and watched "the queen", both were incredibly well played
If we didn't have the makers of the Crown, many people wouldn't realize the real impact of her death. Kind of sad if you think about it. For some people this was devastating, leaving a real impact. Youth now will never experience this kind of connection anymore. Phones, social media and computers have changed the way we socially work.
i remember seeing this speech at the time and thinking 'yeah right, like you really mean this', .. 25yrs later, i have a much better understanding of body language, grief, damage limitation.. liar.. RIP though.
It's kind of sad watching this. The death of Diana in 1997, and now the queen in 2022. A reminder to us all that we are mortal beings, and each one of us will experience death in our lifetime.
Unfortunately no one knows what costs human life in this planet. We can sometimes be too tired of physical and emotional demands which can affect our dying cells each day. We are born to die.
This is the moment that humanized the situation. We all adored Diana as a Princess, The Queen reminded us she was a Mother, but more importantly a Person.

I watched live the accident. Princess Diana had minor injuries and suddenly was dead from serious injuries. The car had damage on one side of the front and suddenly was completely crushed. I hate the royal family and do bit belive they serve a purpose anymore.

@@CP-rg5mi how is it ridiculous to call the dead by their name? especially when he's the one of someone who contributed to her by giving her back some of her precious posession?
@𝖆𝖓𝖌𝖊𝖑 OK I see where this is coming from. You watched The Crown and take that highly fictionalised story for granted. But in fact, it's a far cry from reality. Here are some facts:
Also the driver, Henri Paul.

Came after seeing this speech on the crown. Wow they really nailed it
the way the three amazing actress from the crown recreated her manerisms and way of speaking is amazing.
Its really sad that Diana never got to hear these words during her lifetime..
Especially since she had quite a bit to do with Diana's premature passing.

I agree
True

Maybe one of the better ones, but she's had what I would say more "impactful" speaches. Not to be rude be this seems a bit boilerplate almost, meaning it's a standard speech anyone would give when something tragic has happened.
