Many of you reading this right now grew up around motorcycles. They are greasy, oily machines. The air filters need cleaning, the oil needs replacing, the coolant needs checking, and most importantly, the gas tank needs to be filled. But on Alta Motors' Redshift MX bike, every single one of those tedious bike maintenance practices are a thing of the past. The electric motorcycle need only be plugged in and charged, not unlike the phone and/or computer on which you are reading these words right now, and it is ready to race against any motorcycle in the world. With Josh Hill at the helm, the San Francisco-based manufacturer set out to prove to the world that electric technology is not only coming to motocross; it has arrived. The team's debut at Red Bull Straight Rhythm this year was a massive talking point coming into the race, and the Alta crew knew that the scrutinous and ruthless eyes of the motocross faithful were locked in on them at this year's race.

I think an electric bike would have more purpose off the track. Imagine a backyard course or trails with this bike! No more noise complaints, one less chance of getting caught too. I want one
smurfedgt ya know there are these things called trails, like the government even maintains them (sorta) and they are all around america where you can ride freely
I know I have DCNR trails here, I'm just saying it would be a cool backyard bike for someone who gets noise complaints (me)

I still can't perceive a dirtbike that doesn't make BRAAAP!!
Consider an electric motorcycle with ‘sound modes’: Stealth or Rumble. Why not have the option for electric-powered motor vehicles to accomodate an amplifier (whether stock or after-market) to amplify their quieter engine sounds? Or not and run it in standard mode. Gas engines have mufflers. An electric engine amplifier isn’t an absurd idea for rev lovers in mind
Garbage Clips same
If man was meant to Braaap, he would have been a two stroke.

@@marsmike222 its like fuckin without balls whats the point.
The fact this bike, while still in development, could even keep up with pro race tuned machines is amazing. Damn good engineering folks, nice work.
Gary McMichael why?
Gary McMichael I do a lot of trials riding and electric bikes are slowly phasing out combustion engined bikes because the produce so much torque. I’m not an expert at motocross but ktm and husqvarna have started producing electric bikes and it’s probably only a matter of time until other big brand switch, like what happened with 4 strokes in the 2000s
Ariel Fetters Plus Josh carrying a few extra pounds at the time
@Gary McMichael In a motocross race, I would imagine they a swapping batteries, not charging.
Electric motors have instant torque so actually electric bikes have a big advantage in this type of race

i had the pleasure of riding one of these last weekend and it was amazing. it was the exact bike that Kurt Nicoll rode in the endurocross event on Oct 22nd at xfinity arena, i think he also won a few races on it. the owner of skagit powersports in WA offered to let me ride it. it has engine braking which is cool, if youre in mode 4 you just press the down arrow to mode 1 and as it goes through each mode it brakes the engine. not as drastically as you would notice with a clutch but its still there. i got it up to about 75mph on dirt and it was totally controllable. its instant power delivery, can never bog on you, and it feels like you can ALWAYS pull more torque out of the thing no matter where the throttle is at, it was impressive. the guy said they got about 4 hours out of one full charge, on the website it says 2 but in person i witnessed more than double that time, but i would give it more time and years to see if theres real degradation in the battery life etc. each mode is a relative increase in power output. in mode 1 it would be PERFECT for slow rock crawling and technical riding, rear tire does not slip and its just traction and torque all the way without stalling. but even in mode 1 it still rips, reminds me of my 250 4t. the power in mode 4 reminds me of my 450 exc. i found myself searching for the clutch and shifter lever and it was super weird at first. the bike has traditional rear brake pedal and front brake lever, but i would LOVE if they gave a rear brake lever on the left hand. i think KTM hit the mark with that. sitting on the bike the seat and handlebar configuration reminded me more of a 2 stroke like the Beta XTrainer, or the Husky Tx 300. Slim seat, doesnt saddle up so you can slide your crotch literally up to the triple clamps. but riding the bike it does feel more like a 4 stroke. it's about the same weight, that engine though it doesnt have many moving parts has to be heavy as shit. bike is about 250lbs and riding it it felt almost the exact same as my 450 exc. i definitely want and will most likely own one of these down the road when the technology has proven itself and improved itself for several years. another cool aspect i could see coming out of this technology would be the use of data. if they could plug a computer into this thing and while racing or on the test track you see your slow points and map averages. or even for the novice who could just track their speed averages and power output and acceleration data for a day out riding trying to beat old scores for a trail they love. all in all, i see a shit load of potential for this and i WILL own an E bike, whichever one it is.
Don't see comments this good in RUclips comments ever. Nice review, print quality. cheers.
IIIIIbarcodeIIIII thanks man. I'm just excited about the technology. you owe yourself the favor of trying one out.
How was the balance ? After all time is made in the corners, Did you feel the 250 #'s ?
The balance wasnt as light as a 2t, but it was still very competitive for a 450 4t weight bike. I would very much so compare it to a 450, the 17 450 xc-f
P Kurk
The biggest thing between electric motors and gas is torque... Gas has to rev up to horsepower.. Electric you just flip a switch and it all there.
I would assume lighter weight and ability to shift center of gravity would be the biggest advantage...but I have a science background, what do I know?
On the flip side, I bet they can’t last a mx race of thirty minutes plus two laps. I’m not sure they can even muster 1/2 that. So I’m guessing they can only do short stunt shows like this for now.
Well an engine has a whole process to make power. In a 4 stroke 3 of the 4 strokes you are not making any power that's why you have to wind them out to make the process happen faster. 2 stroke half the time your making power. Electric is one big power stroke all the time in comparison. Its impossible for an ice engine to compete once they have better battery tech
@@jamesavery6671 Well, that´s not a down side if the torqe is not delivered contantly. Why where V-twins so successful in flat track, why they raced big bang engines even on tarmac? An electric driven engine wont be competitive with an absolute smooth power output, traction control cannot compensate that. It´s about grip, it´s about driveability.
@fuckboy, on a gas powered engine you just have to flick the clutch and it´s all there...
@@jtfike I bet they can & as far as what you know, probably not much but I can say something about what you don't know. It's pretty common knowledge that currently EVs have a weight disadvantage. That'll change in time, but for now, it's clearly a thing you & your "science" background don't know. :/
@@jamesavery6671 Just how long will the better tech take. There will be no battery ever that will have the power of a gallon of gasoline. Batteries are the absolute worst for storage of power. Just getting on the band wagon for green. Take your electric to the desert and we will ride 200 miles and then fill up your battery for 12 hours and I will pour in a gallon or 2 of gas and say see Ya. Oh! and batteries are really heavy and will never replace gas in your life time. I will just take a few 5 gallon gas cans and how many batteries will it take to even come close . Oh! just take a gas powered generator to charge the batteries, now that makes a lot of sense, NOT!
I can’t imagine how hard that must be. To find the rhythm of the ground, bike, throttle, vibration ... everything, while you have a bike next to you making all of the noise on the track. So cool!!!

i like your thinking though. sort of like what formula E is doing, only small circuits layed out in the cities and urban centers.
Some electricity generating stations use diesel fuel to run the generators.
Big problem in the UK is noise complaints, even if there are busy main roads near the track making more noise !Dirt bikers get looked upon by many people as trouble, so any excuse to shut them out. Hopefully silent motors will get you what you want...... was so much easier in the 70s !!
Yeah, because there's only one way to make electricity.

Josh and Ryan V. battling on thier 80's at Washougal back in the day is still some of the best racing i have ever seen!!!!
Wow the comments are a cesspool. People get pretty defensive when they see some innovation in the field. I'll tell you one thing, no engine can match the torque an electric motor can put out, and electric motors can put it out at any speed. They have a long way to go to be running moto's, but its still really cool to see innovation.
For sure. Lots of people just don't like seeing change. Same thing happened when 4 strokes first started emerging.
Xunatic the problem is the way they go about promoting These products a lot of people that are into bikes are into quads and cars as well as gas powered remote control models and the attraction to them is the engine, the noise and most importantly the grease. Maintenance is half the fun for most gears heads. Upgrading is fun and make the ride unique to you with an electric motor the option to upgrade isn't possible really. They need to show that it could be another addition to mx not replace gas.
MrSnowrocks exactly
ahh we humans dont really care about change, we just love to blast our opinion espcially since we know that no one can stop us from running out and buying the latest thing even after we have said its of the devil. The freedom to call new stuff garbage is our most sacred right. Maybe there are people out there who will refuse to ride a bike that goes fast with a different motor than gas, but who really cares, the point is to have fun on a machine and that will not change just cause it dosent make noise or use gas.

IMO they should put a left hand rear brake on the bike, cause the finesse you get with that is insane compared to using a brake pedal with a stiff boot. Plus you can stay on the balls of your feet at all times when you don't have to worry about the rear brake pedal at all!

A nice way of looking at it I guess
I would like to see electric motorcycles with ‘sound modes’: Stealth or Rumble. Gas engines have mufflers. An electric engine amplifier would appeal to audiophiles and may help sway those riders still on the fence for the sound factor.
How much hp added when you upgrade the exhaust??
Like 6hp I think
you don't get any HP when you add exhaust on any bike, one cylinder just needs a certain amount of back compression, cars are differant because they have more than one cylinder and one exhaust so you already start with too much back compression (compensated by egrs, recyclers, even a load on your engine will displace some air somewhere else besides the exhaust pipe, the only load you put on a bike is your ass)
ya dual exhaust
ya headers
ya they tried that on bikes to for some reason...
he was joking buddy, it doesn't have an exhaust. That was the point.
uhh bullshit look at dino's dude and then the aftermarket exhaust will help with the exact right back pressure and some bikes do have more than one cylinder. look at 2 strokes it is all about the exhaust
an he was joking dude it is an electric bike hence no exhaust
What do dinosaurs have to do with it?? Growls per second isnt really an accepted measurement bro...maybe try using a DYNO instead.

Yew , don't even get me started on walkers... I got a minibike when I was 10, and me and my friends spend hours every day for like 2 years to make nice trails along a creek in the woods, then came the walkers "You can't ride back here, that's not what these trails are for!". actually, its why they exist in the first place! I love that the elect. bike actually competed! so cool. does it have any sort of transmission?
doesn't need it.
Doesn't have any gears no, you only need a tranny with an IC engine to keep it in the power band. With an electric motor, it has 100% torque all the time, right from 0mph.
Fucking walkers, i know this all too well.
Even if an electric engine does not neccessarly need a transmission, it can get benefiticial if you want to increase in speed if you think through what type of transmission to use for the electric engine.
For example, the Rimac Concept_One has a two speed gearbox, even though there one for each wheel and those are mounted directly at the rear wheels. The gearboxes at the front wheels only got a single speed.
+okleydokley an IC engine dosent need a trans, but its also beneficial (highly). and I'm not an expert, but I didn't think any electric motors make 100% torque all the time, if so would they not just keep getting faster if you switched the signal fast enough? don't they make 100% at 0 rpm and drop from there? some electric things use transmissions...
When Josh hill looked over at Cunningham whit that crazy speed through the whoops, man that's a gnarly move!
Beautiful! Powerful AND silent, like a ninja!

One advantage is that you can now have tracks in built up suburban areas and there is nothing for kill joys to call the cops about because there is no" noise pollution".
1:01 anyone can explain me that? so you can make your suspension harder with putting air on it?
Electric has instantaneous torque right off the bottom. Electric bikes could be the new thing in motocross if they can get the batteries to last. For longer races I don’t know, battery technology still may not be far advanced enough for other purposes,we’ll have to wait and see.
Who wants to watch this if there is nothing to listen? Imagine if there are two electric bikes racing against each other. History? Sad history!

Fuel, oil, noise. I like all those things. The rumble of a 4stroke is so badass.
"Performance this drive train is c capable of."
Yeah, for 5 laps before the battery dies.
Yeah, if you're stuck in a traffic jam ;-)
with the way motocross is suppose to be ridden, it wont last an hour
the bike battery will far outlast the rider.
okleydokley yeah right, plus theres no better feeling than engaging the clutch and revving your engine, weather its a 2 stroke or 4 stroke it gives you that feeling that an electric bike can never give you. pop the clutch and your being launched like a rocket, which a electric bike cant do also
Don't underestimate the torque of an electric motor. It is perfect for a rocket start. Nevertheless, the battery still is the bottleneck.
Huge fan of Josh Hill and I was hoping this bike was going to win it all. I am tired of working on dirt bikes. The torque is really impressive.
I don't think it'll lower the skill, it'll just be a different skill (slightly) and you still will have guys who are unbelievably good at it.
huh, aside from feathering a clutch which becomes second nature after time on a bike.
I personally don't like to be limited, so I welcome different.
YexaC you could argue that 4s lowered the skill since you don’t need to be at the perfect rom range like a 2s.
GoatRoper911 then go play video games and stay away from bikes.

it's a whole new era us piston heads are looking at. We have to appreciate it. It's innovation and the future. With that said I think that when E motors come into play it will be paired with E motors. For our "obsolete" breed we will still have our class. To me there is nothing like the sound of a bike or a hard core built car... But we have to know that this is the new frontier in Motorsports. It will all be very exciting and frightening, kind of like graduating H.S. and the unknown is there, even tho we were very comfy lmao
I've just witnessed the beginning of the end for yet another of my passions in life. 4 strokes were bad enough but now.... oh well.
Shannon Bright yes but 4 strokes were actually better lol electric is just fucking poo
funny how nobody is talking about what happens with all the batteries when they're spent.....look back through history and there is a lot of mistakes made simply trying to fix a problem then years later created an even bigger problem.
MrKdr500 battery's are being recycled right now so they get 100% reused.
Tammy Forbes But batteries lose power and how long they can hold a charge every time they are recycled. You get diminishing returns every time.
The batteries aren't reused, they're recycled, and they can continue to be recycled indefinitely. The principle is the same as with aluminum cans. What causes lithium batteries to wear out has to do with built-up irregularities on chemically active surfaces as they charge and discharge. The irregularities cause problems but the materials are still good.
Awesome!! love reading the old grumpy people complaints. gas sucks its only 20% efficient. The next generation is Electric so get out of the way.
Josh Taylor right cause there are no young people who like the sound and smell of a big block engine, mustangs, corvettes etc... not everyone is a tree hugger that's all.
Josh Taylor I'm 20 and fuck electric cars and bikes... The sound is a lot of the reason that makes them fun... There's no better sound than a 2jz supra making big boost and hearing that turbo spool then blow off valve! Do that on an electric car.
Josh Taylor, I'm 17 and the sound of my bike gets me going, that rumble of the engine is addicting, electric bikes have there place, don't force it on people.
Stuntihn MX and I'm sure you live your life a quarter mile at a time.
Josh Taylor all these "sound is awesome guys" are gonna be left in the dust eventually. because race teams don't care about that, they care about what goes faster, and that's what is gonna sell electric. kids growing up in the future are gonna look back and say, "why the fuck do I have to shift? your bike needed oil changes? it vibrated all the time? heat radiated through the fender? it smelled like gasoline?" the ICE lovers will always cling to the past, they'll be like those guys with a hotrod in their garage that they refuse to give up because nostalgia, few and far between.
He looked electrified after that first race 😊
"I'm really amped up",no pun intended.😉
Yo this had my heart POUNDING. I am an electric bike maker and to see this guy pull through made my day!
i love the sound of a 2 stroke
nothing like a Wankel at 10,000 rpm
Nah i like four stroke because they are faster and have more power and are not annoying like a two stroke
Eragon Shadeslayer false
Pain what’s false about his statement?
@@pendejo312 he is saying 4 strokes are not faster a 250 2 stroke will dust a 250 4 stroke
My jestesmy kilkanascie lat do tylu od tego poziomu jazdy i organizacji
I was hoping that the electric dirt bike would have power to both wheels. I was hoping it could do this without having the chain drive mechanism.
Do some people not realize that the sound is half the fun? They are doing the same thing over at NHRA with "top fuel" cars. They are working on electric dragsters. Who wants to watch that? Make them driver-less while you're at it.
Agree with the sound part.
If it has no sound it takes away the feeling of power.
Hearing a tuned car going down the street instant gets my attention, giving me ghoosebumps :D
Feeling the sound pressure of a drag car does aswell.
My self are more into bikes, and driving same bike with and without aftermarket exhaust makes all the diffrence in the world.
Heck, even the cruicer bike gets enjoyable haha.
(My bike list if anyones intrested: Xt660x - gpr, Xj6-N full ixil, Roadstar 1700 - vance & hines)
I wouldnt mind owning anything electrical doe, can still be fun to ride if it performs good but it will always miss something.
Luftbubblan true that an electric car can not give you the sound of that sexy turbo spool and blow off valve sound!
NeilLB7 that is a brilliant idea!!!!!!!!?
i never gona buy an elictric car or dirt bike
The second drag cars turn electric and driverless is when the audience is gonna go peopleless aswell, going to a drag track and feeling a v8 rumble your bones to the core just standing next to it, and smelling the burnt rubber and methanol in the air is just badass. Hearing a faint "whizzzzzzzz" and the car disappearing is just the lamest thing around.
They need to time the racers on their bike and then time them on the electric. That's the real test.
I’ve always wanted an electric dirt bike and I wish I get one next year for Christmas 🎄
iv always loved 2 strokes . sound the smell . 4 strokes never really did it but I'm not riding no more . this is cool tho great work .. evolution !!
The sound of a gas dirtbike is half the fun.
soon they will be remote controlled, no rider needed! lol
Does anyone know what the electricity is stored in
Lithium.....SuperCapasitor
Or.??
This is a excellect idea and show of what the future holds!
The idea of going out having fun without anybody having to say a thing about noise is fantastic.
I have four electric scooters i take camping for the kids to fly around without complaints from anybody.
No noise ,just laughing is heard or the high pitch whine of the motor/chain going by.
Please keep going
Even though future is electric, I will still ride my 2 stroke Suzuki
Pabitri, You have an open mind. Like you, I will always love my 2 stroke. There is simply no other greater feeling than the snap of that power band, and that sweet tone of the exhaust. Unfortunately, Alta is out of business now, but I'm sure the big companies will take this technology to a new level. Personally, I love it! I remember when very small brushless motors were hand made by people in their garage, that would fit into RC Planes and Cars. The moment I installed one into one of my RC Planes back in 2003, hooked up to a Lithium Polymer battery, saw how insanely fast and powerful it was, and that it actually beat most of my gas RC planes and cars, I thought to myself, "This is it, this is the future of everything powered by gas." It will never take away anything from the internal combustion gas powered motors, it's just a new, very efficient way to produce the same power or even more power in some cases, of gas power.
me too
Won't happen
bring back 2 strokes!!
where have you been they are back
ffhgu 07 I've been riding 2 strokes since the 70's lol so I've been around for a bit
destroyeverything34 my point is they aren't manufacturing them like they used to. I've been riding 2 strokes since the 70's where have you been? lmao
Jonathan Dexter nice!
Steve Ringer ikr, close to 75% of enduro guys are on two strokes and that sport is growing even faster than motocross. If they balance the classes better they would be back winning moto's in no time. 450cc four stroke vs 250cc two stroke was never even.
I think for competitive events like these electric should be where it's at for sure. They are usually used for short periods of time then they can be recharged. I think it's definitely the future. I'm still doubting we are currently at a time where electric bikes could be mainstream for the average guy who wants to go out riding in the woods all weekend though with batteries as they currently are. Someone has to be the pioneers though so I'm glad someone is doing it.
Greatly appreciated congratulations, wonderful performance 👌👌👌
