Fail. They need to bring back a proper compact model. The XZ1 compact is probably the best phone they've made. XZ2 compact is fine, too, but a little bigger and heavier, and I have to charge it every day. They should just refresh the XZ1 chassis with a modern SOC, new camera, etc. Maybe even keep the original XZ1 compact screen; the 1280x780 screen looks fine at that size and literally lasts for days between charges.
Just bought the XPERIA 1. Im loving it. I walked away from Samsung and do not regret it. I hate the "punch hole" on the screen. It totally ruins it for me. Sony did an awesome job.

@@TechMagnet im mostly interested in Japanese phones like the fujitsu Arrows and Sharps Aquos phones- this Sony does look nice though- the Xperia Ace is quite good too
@@jub8891 i dont like the aquos too much. isnt really made for me. but the sony has so nice camera features, for me as creator a good companion. Cool that some guys still love japanese hardware :)

I think sony's strategy now is a bit simpler (well, apart from naming though). They are just releasing a slightly bigger premium flagship and slightly smaller flagship, unlike what they used to do (having 1 compact, 1 regular, and 1 bigger premium flagship). Same goes with their mid ranger. Back then they have the regular, the plus and the ultra. Now, they have only the regular and the plus which in size term, sits between the older plus and ultra.

Its not compact. How many times do i have to say it? They didnt even call it a compact, because, wait for it... IT ISN'T. The xperia 5 compared to the xperia 1 is what the XZ1 is compared to the xz premium and what the Z5 is compared to the Z5 premium. The Xperia 1 is the "Premium" line up.. it has the 4k display.. The Xperia 5 is the regular line up( xz1,xz2,xz3) And there is simply no compact. Its missing. We can hope they will bring it back next year, but its only hopes.... most likely, its dead.
And now that every reviewer out there is calling the Xperia 5 a compact device, they are like: well we dont even need to bring it back.. all the reviewers think 6.1" is compact.

@@user-zr4wh3lh5v I am interested in everything about it except the size. I have the XZ1 compact, so i can go for at least 1 more year with it. Maybe ill upgrade next september, ill wait to see if they bring a real compact until then. If they dont, then the compact flagship phone is officially dead and ill have to accept that i will use a bigger phone from then on, so i will have to decide between Sony's latest regular flagship(the successor of the Xperia 5) and the galaxy S11( i will see wich one is smaller and see what they both do with their cameras).

@@user-zr4wh3lh5v Yeah i looked at it, but i would rather like to have a triple camera on my next phone. Maybe the S11e will have it and be smaller then the S11. I am not in a rush to upgrade right now, i can wait 1 year.. I have the xz1c from day 1 and it still performing very well, battery is still excellent so unless it fails in some way ill keep it for atleast 1 more year and evaluate my options then.

Hope there is a more in depth video coming and that it does not overheat like my Xperia 1 did. Great review and many thanks for posting.

The phones design and quality feels great. But i think they would succeed mich better if they didnt go with this ultrawide aspect ratio.

When taking group photo the 21:9 ratio must have merit to bring more people into the photo. If capture a high building or tree the 21:9 also can capture all of the object than other shorter ratio.
You can easily do that with using a different lens on a small screen aswell :p

Is there any noticeable difference in screen quality between the xperia 1 and xperia 5? Can you really see the difference between 1080p and 4k at such a small screen size?
You may notice some difference, but since the Xperia 5's display is adequately small enough to maintain the sharpness of a 1080p display, the difference may not be that big as much as the resolution numbers say.
Do some camera comparisons with other phones.

I hate recent Sony phone, they placed the volume button at top, it's bullshit placement. I cannot use it as single hand anymore which is usually I press camera button and zoom in, or just watching something and adjusting volume, it's easier to have volume button near camera button.
There's many reviewers that always critisize Sony volume button placement, I can said to myself, "fucking west people hand, you all hands too big".

Jesus Christ Sony, we all lol'd when the XZ2 Compact turned out to be a plus phone (but still bought them as you locked the storage on the Z3c) but now your flagship "small" phone is a phablet? lol. oled has really good viewing angles with almost no color shift. Especially sony has one of the best displays in class, as they know how to calibrate their displays.

jub8891 they exited the southeast Asia market completely last I heard. But they’re currently taking pre-orders for Xperia 1 in Malaysia, where I’m from. Can’t wait to get my hands on them.
Battery life is the main reason to choose this over the Xperia 1. 4K is overkill and tanks the battery and resources. 1080p is the more logical choice
If they only made it smaller! Like 5.2 inches! That would be a rocking star for me! The other day I saw Xperia 10 and it has 6.0 inches and it's quite big! This phone is not compact! Sad!! Going to stay with my xz1 compact!
21:9 display on 5.2 screen. The most thinnest phone ever. But content like 16:9 is going to be very small. Its still going to be fine
they really didnt need to make it 21:9. an 18:9 5.2" to 5.5" smartphone wouldve been perfect. like sonys version of a pixel.

utter BS, Sony didn't say it's a compact one. It has nowhere written that, whereas compact phones had written that on their names. Compact Phone was a fail, so they have ditched it. This guy liked them so he's telling them special

Wrong! HGL mode use multiple exposure per frames! -_- that is why 60fps isn't available.
And there's not memory stack on the sensors on the Xperia 5.

Nice phone however that is NOT a COMPACT phone by any 'stretch' of the imagination, no pun intended. I know that they are trying to be different however I think that Sony should have left the dimensions of the 'compact' somewhat similar to the XZ2/XZ1 compact but hey, gots to move with the times, right? I won't be doing that, I was kidding myself that I would finally see a new decent compact but was left astonished at what they had accom. I just loved their compact iterations up until now, okay they weren't all perfect, but what phone is? I find it somewhat disappointing. I thought that the whole point was to be able to use the phone single handed, unless you are the grinch I don't think its possible. I personally would ere on the side of fail on this one. Perhaps I am stuck in MY old ways.
Do you remember the Xperia mini? Now that was a truly compact phone. Man, I really enjoyed it and preferred it over the Xperia x10 flagship by that

They dropped wireless charging, then their eq software out of their music app, fucking finger print scanner is so hit and miss, kept the stupid vibration feature, just what the hell are you doing Sony?

Can the phone slow motion?
Yes, in super slow mo with 960 fps in a burst while filming (takes some practice to get timing right), or in classic mode with 120 fps video and the slow mo applied afterwards.

It is not a compact phone but a compact version from it Xperia 1, get it! If a compact phone it should be like Xperia Go because Xperia Go is completely a compact, but when you use split window the small display is really too small hence you can't even use the split screen feature.

I wish they removed the camera button and replace it with a walkman style button for music navigation. Currently using Xperia X for almost 3 years now, i can confirm i never use it because of the placement is not very ideal.
It's there for point and shoot style photography. If you had never used it, you never really knew how to use the phone. I've used it since Xperia M4, and it's the most convenient way of focusing a subject.
