The brine they use on the highways here in Iowa eats vehicles faster than old road salt ever did. My bed just broke loose on one corner the other day on a drive towin our boat. I hauled a bunch of dirt in my 03' which probably didn't help.
This looks exactly like the truck I'm messing with right now. 1998 F150 4x4 manual. Originally from IL, so just as much rust. It is also white. Lol I feel your pain brother.
I was like “hah, that looks like a Michigan truck” and you said Michigan and I LOL’d. This truck is the embodiment of why salt is the worst thing to ever use on roads.
This video should actually really help me out in the future. Mines a 97 lt 4wd manual (so I assume the same 4.2 aswell). Lets me see how everything is laid out under the bed. Already rebuilt the transmission, but having a hell of a time getting the transfer case in. After that its rotors, new pads/shoes, bleed the brakes (just put new lines in) a new thermostat, tires, and she should be ready to drive. But where this really helps is I am planning on taking the bed off and making a wooden flat bed and staining it.
80s-2000s trucks are the best at collecting rust, I've seen more 60s and 70s trucks without this much rust and I'm from the same area. That being said rust definitely makes for some cheap finds
I have a very similar problem thanks alot for it. I've broken 3 bits so far. Wish I found this sooner. I didn't have a impact hammer before though now I do.

I got a '97 in a bit worse shape over here in GR I'm working on. You made it easier bro, thanks!
i used a pipe wrench on the head of the bed bolts, it was hard, but i got all out but the one in the driver's side front. just no wiggle room there.

Agreed
Or Wisconsin.
@@Adamz678 Or Upstate NY. They are crazy here in the mountains with salt.
Iowa here. Yep. My 02 F150 looks just like that. And it only has 60k original miles! That salt is MEAN!
It's crazy how much more a truck costs compared to an SUV. When you consider 50% of it, is an empty shell/bed.

Cut mine off with a flame wrench, scary doing the one over the gas tank though, don't think I'd do it again.

Thanks for the video. Helped me replace mine.

I want to use a needle scaler on that rust so bad, no wire wheel or grinder, needle scaler all the way
I also want to spray it with dtm 2 part epoxy primer
I’m hoping I can get mine off, it’s in way worse shape, it has no bed rails left
If the bolts have threads how are you hammering them through the threaded hole
I cut off the head of the bolt located in the truck bed and they fall out from the bottom.
They have a clip nut inserted over the frame rail, like he said cut the head off and hammer and punch them out!
Or weld a nut on top and use penetrating oil and impact them out, bolts and clip nuts will have to be replaced!
Great video! Very cool! Thank you!
Thanks buddy lotta help!
T50 torx PLUS
Thanks man . . Good luck . Doing the same ! Haha
Could I spray the bolts with blaster or other penetrating oil a few times and let sit for 24 hours???
You could, but it's extremely unlikely to work. Doesn't hurt to try though. I'm doing exactly what his video shows atm.
