In Vietnam, Sparrow accuracy and reliability was so low US planes would salvo 4 at a time to due to the low (10% kill) accuracy. Sparrows did improve but these mercenaries could be using old surplus. Firing Sparrows and then reversing course would break lock-on and cause all the Sparrows to miss. Also, expose their hot tailpipes to the primitive IR guided missiles the Fishbeds would carry.

MrAJdude57 Yeah. It would be awesome if Namco and this anime producers work together and made an anime like this with more than 12 episodes, called ace combat or something like it.
To e clear though, the Navy should have both the F-14D and F/A-18E. The two were basically the Navy's "F-15" and "F-16". Tomcats could intercept and destroy bombers and/or fighters from maximum range with the AIM-54, and the Super Hornets can follow up with an AMRAAM strike, and then both could dogfight with the remaining enemies.
Mickey Simon uses an F-14A. It was one of the original 40-something F-14As slated for Iran back in the late 1970s, but McCoy managed to snare it with some good money. The Aim-54 Phoenix had been cancelled, and only Iran had them at this time. The AMRAAM didn't even exist when this is set (late 70s/early 80s). The missiles they are using are likely a mix of AIM-9Bs and AIM-9P-4/5s for the short-range stuff, and AIM-7E-2 Sparrows for BVR combat.
It's true, but it was only ever officially released in English in the US as the two merged acts, so just loosely I'd prefer to call it [OVA2] for lack of a better name, to avoid confusion.

What always bugged me of 'Area 88' was the "video-game" attitude it always had toward air warfare...in each episode we see dozens of planes go down while everyone with even a passing knowledge of Third World air warfare during the Cold War era knows that actual air-to-air engagements were few and far between and that planes were mainly used for CAS missions and the occasional bombing run on some logistics/civilian/industrial objective...

My explanation has always been that a round came straight along the side of his canopy and shattered it into the cockpit. The other problem I have is that he has seemingly unlimited 30mm ammo, the cannons on the Kfir only carried 120-150 rounds so he would be dry pretty fast.
