That was a game based on Area 88, but was changed to UN Squadron because there was no license to distribute the anime outside of Japan. A lot of anime games during the ‘80s and ‘90s underwent changes for Western markets either for licensing reasons or in order to appeal to a different audience.
I loved it and bought it again but I hate not being able to save or enter a code to start from where I want. I don't have a whole afternoon to play through the whole damn thing anymore.
UN Squadron is one of my top 10 video games of all time and I play it every now and then on my SNES with an old television set. I have 4 copies (just in case, so that I can play it forever in this same way), two of them with original package. I love that game to death. It's flawless. I thank God I was born in the 80s so that I could play UN Squadron. The music is beyond perfection. I even have the original Capcom arcade board of the previous game on the franchise (Carrier Airwing), although it's not the same.
In Vietnam, Sparrow accuracy and reliability was so low US planes would salvo 4 at a time to due to the low (10% kill) accuracy. Sparrows did improve but these mercenaries could be using old surplus. Firing Sparrows and then reversing course would break lock-on and cause all the Sparrows to miss. Also, expose their hot tailpipes to the primitive IR guided missiles the Fishbeds would carry.
@@ivanivanovich4294 These mercs are flying F-14s, F-18s and even F-16s. Area 88 must be paying really well if they can access such cutting edge fighters during the early 80s, further emphasized by the fact that the enemy faction largely relies on MiG-21, Harrier and MiG-27 spam than getting MiG-29s.
MrAJdude57 Yeah. It would be awesome if Namco and this anime producers work together and made an anime like this with more than 12 episodes, called ace combat or something like it.
I love the way area 88 was drawn out every sketch was awesome and simply majestic , i really didnt like the Re edited newer version with the CGI which was ...... yeah... low standard but the old anime of Area 88 was awesome
@geijin This is a lot better than a lot of the anime out there. I've seen all of the original anime (this one has been remastered by the looks of it) and the detail of the animation as well as the story is superb. Definitely one of those hidden gems of anime.
@ThyPeasantSlayer found the manga to about half way into the story, alot of good stuff in it plus ive read part of the final issue script....lets say it was heavy stuff explaining why father had a sudden change when sakis uncle got crowned. Lets say that war was way more than a black on white power struggle.
It's true, but it was only ever officially released in English in the US as the two merged acts, so just loosely I'd prefer to call it [OVA2] for lack of a better name, to avoid confusion.
To e clear though, the Navy should have both the F-14D and F/A-18E. The two were basically the Navy's "F-15" and "F-16". Tomcats could intercept and destroy bombers and/or fighters from maximum range with the AIM-54, and the Super Hornets can follow up with an AMRAAM strike, and then both could dogfight with the remaining enemies.
Mickey Simon uses an F-14A. It was one of the original 40-something F-14As slated for Iran back in the late 1970s, but McCoy managed to snare it with some good money. The Aim-54 Phoenix had been cancelled, and only Iran had them at this time. The AMRAAM didn't even exist when this is set (late 70s/early 80s). The missiles they are using are likely a mix of AIM-9Bs and AIM-9P-4/5s for the short-range stuff, and AIM-7E-2 Sparrows for BVR combat.
What always bugged me of 'Area 88' was the "video-game" attitude it always had toward air warfare...in each episode we see dozens of planes go down while everyone with even a passing knowledge of Third World air warfare during the Cold War era knows that actual air-to-air engagements were few and far between and that planes were mainly used for CAS missions and the occasional bombing run on some logistics/civilian/industrial objective...
@Cort086 There was no English dub until like 20 years later with the release of the special edition DVD, which came with all three episodes of the OVA in both English and Japanese as selectable languages.
if memory serves me correctly: The super hornet is a bigger airframe, it can carry more armaments, has a longer range, and better electronics. Many people think that the Navy should have upgraded the F-14D rather than making the fleet of hornets
Super hornet is a lot smaller than a tomcat, but bigger than a hornet. Navy wanted the refurb and new tomcats, but Dick Cheney gonna do, what Dick Cheney gonna do.
@MegaEvilToaster , that's a good point, although it seems unlikely that the Migs would be using all-aspect IR seekers. Anyways, I'm nitpicking what is, after all, gorgeous animation of what are now classic warplanes (Mirage, Tomcat, even the Tigershark, etc.) in fictional action and it's not like I'm a pilot or anything!
It doesn't look like they do or that the impact of the Missile or Bullets is enough to shred the plane and pilot. Some of it even impacts the cockpit itself.
@@Iffy350 they may not even have the spare money to buy a new ejection seat. I bet most of those pilots did try to eject, but just like Jess, they had faulty ejection seats
Damn, Jess. It's too bad what happened to 'em in the first 8 minutes. If he was kept alive any longer, he would've killed someone else along with himself..
you said it, I like this and the new one, but this is the better of the two versions. I wish they would make an ace combat style game based off this anime
You can say that again! It 's not because the 04 series was bad but, compared to this, it looks like a ''Japanese Smallville with air fights''!!! For once more, well done! I still don 't understand how you found the eng dub!
yeah, i think that a AMRAAM, i think is that, we lauch him, at least in a f16, and later he gets close enough to the target he own mini radar sensor can find the enemy. but the spparow to chase the enemy the pilot gotta stay on him, i think u understood. srry my english im brasilian
They got my eyes, they got my arms, they got my kidneys, they got my car keys and my lunch! He's blind and can hardly use the stick but he can still chase his friendly's six?
cont. While the Tomcat was a maitenence hog here's the mentality behind the previous statement. "The Super Hornet is still a weak aircraft just like its older sister. The F-14D can fly farther, faster and with a greater payload than either the F/A-18C or the F/A-18E/F.Current pilots and RIOs transisitioning from the Tomcat the the Super Hornet are not impressed. Less power, less gas, less range."
Likely because they are using older AIM-7E-2 Dogfight Sparrows. Older Sparrows weren't exactly very good, to the point where pilots in Vietnam would fire off all 4 at a single target. This is known as Ripple-Firing.

Technically, this is OVA 3, considering it's Act III, but the DVD release merged Acts I and II, removing some scenes from the original releases, at least according to what I've read, and the Japanese audio track wasn't really as great as the English one, but eh, at least the dub sounds pretty good. Jess knew the ejection seat was there, but it just wasn't usable. As Jess stated, he forget to get the ejection mechanism repaired. Most of the aircraft the mercenaries get are second-hand, meaning they've already been used for a good few years

Rear seat is only for operating the radar in extremely long range modes related to firing the phoenix missile. In the series, the pilot figured they'd never get hands on any of those missiles, so had the seat removed, and the radar locked to pilot control.
I still think this is probably one of the best animes ever made.
5:33 - 5:39 has got to be the most badass clip of a Tomcat in an anime!
