In the first chapter of the manga Saki leads the squadron to go out to bomb the S.A.M. base, but Shin refused to go, and so did Mickey, and that cost them $5,000 for refusing, then while their away Shin knew that the enemy would send planes to come and attack Area 88, and Mickey was impressed of his knowing. On the second chapter they go out to bomb a Supply base which they believe also has anti aircraft missiles, so it's Shin, Mickey, and Boris along with three F-5A pilots.
The F-8 with its wings folded is right at 25 feet. The width of an F-5 wing tip to wing tip is 25 odd feet. So, when the F-5's couldn't 't fit and the F-8's could, I call shenanigans on this. ^~^
Fun fact (in DCS at least) You can take off, fly a circuit, and land an F-14 with it's wings overslept. (My pilot forgot about that step when we swapped roles the other day and I was his rio for once... Heheh)
I mean, the swept wing on an F-14 more or less gives it similar characteristics to an actual delta-wing aircraft. However, flying with the wingtips folded on something like an F-8, F-4, or A-7 will drastically hamper performance. Irl, you can't fold or unfold the wings mid-flight, as it would cause them to snap, or cause the plane to become unco trollable
I wish I had all the episodes of the OVA, because it's just so awesome. But some major nitpicks... 1: Modern fighter jets (even 70's and 80's era), would never need to fly so low to attack their targets unless they were purposefully trying to fly under the radar. 2: Those weren't 'Wing Flaps' that Shin retracted, he folded the wings on is obviously a carrier version of his fighter, if you actually tried to do it, it would rip your wings apart. Other than that, it's a great show.

@Hommephive I thought the remake was pretty good. They changed Shin a lot though. He's less emotional than he is in the Manga or in this series. The fact that they cut the series so early though is what irritates me. I wanted to see him shoot Kanzaki down!

Absolutely. Saki turned out to be very sympathetic to Shin. The only reason he didn't let Shin go until the end was because Asran desperately needed pilots to do these dangerous missions, and Shin was among the absolute best they had.
@@Tigershark_3082 And it'll have both been beyond his power and looked bad too the others. Later he does lighten up and they become quite close war buddies. I bet when he is on the 747 and finds out who the captain is he felt quite warm inside giving him the ultimate guilt trip!
@GunnyG6 Thanks for a reply, I picked up the complete set of the remake new for $5 and was thinking about checking out the ova. Guess I'll be buying it sometime in the future.
@evilwarcow I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but this whole video is not supposed to be "act 1", only a part from it. I think it would be less confusing to mark it as (from) OVA1, OVA2 since that's the only way it was released in English.
@THiggs09 I recommend both. Both are nice stories, the new one has of course that nice new CGI graphics feel but the old OVA's story is more fleshed out I think. Though both leave much to be desired as the manga was never fully translated and we get left off at a very ambiguous chapter. This is a SPOILER WARNING. In the manga I know that Kanzaki later escapes and duels Shin in the air where he gets shot down and finally killed, and Shin goes back to Ryoko while losing all memory of Area 88.
The TV series looks generic; the OVA looks more cinematic and the detail of the dogfights are way better. Nothing beats MIO in a soundtrack, but the Avex Trax of the TV series is catchy

Area 88 is a government facility (you can see the support staff in uniforms) but the pilots are part of Asaran's Foreign Legion (mercenaries)
