In this video I'm going to review the Sigma 45mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens for L mount and E mount.
My name is Matti Sulanto, I'm a photographer and a Lumix ambassador based in Helsinki Finland. I'll publish a new video twice a week.
I make my content using Panasonic Lumix cameras and lenses. Some of the equipment I use is my own and some is on loan from Panasonic.

Aah so this lens and the entire series was made for you. Excellent. Without these lenses, i wouldn't have even touched the S9. Now I am happy owner of an S9 along with the Sigma 45mm f2.8 and Sigma 17 mm f4, amazing kit, which I have been waiting for 10 years.
Thanks for sharing.
About the aperture ring, I come from the Fuji camp and the 45 2.8 here does it just like Fuji does. That’s actually good news for me.
Just got mine. Didn't check image quality on PC, but primary feature - in person it looks so cuuuuuuuuute, like 3-4 times smaller than any Panasonic's. Just unbelievable how small it is....Well packaged and fells nice, metal. Rings feels good as well. Focusing blazing.
Thanks again for review!
Great! It really is a lovely little lens.
I bought this lens a couple of weeks ago to use with my Leica SL and CL. It works brilliantly with both. I would say that the AF isn’t super quick but adequate enough especially when you consider the price point of this lens. The 45mm FF angle of view is really useful on the SL and the near 68mm reach on the CL is fantastic for portraits and background separation. One big note for me is the form factor and balance on the SL is fantastic. I’m really looking forward to trying out more SigmaL-mount lenses :)
Thanks a lot for your comment.
Absolute perfection on my new S5! I just love it, thank you for your positive review. It will be on my camera more than any other because the weight of my other lenses all require a tripod. This one doesn’t! Thank you!
Thank you! I'm happy to hear you like the lens.
Same aperture ring orientation as on my fuji cameras. I've noticed that the S line has a lot in common with the Fuji XH1 and I suspect that they inspected that camera closely. It's very good... (even if Fuji botched up its deployment).
Mr. Sulanto, I have been watching your videos ever since you started your Youtbube channel. I am so happy that your channel is continue growing. You always cover great contents. Thank you for all the hard work. Have a wonderful weekend.
Thanks! Please call me by first name, Amy😀
Yes, sir. Matti. :)
This lens on a full frame sensor is very soft wide open...I don't understand this counter-performance of those from Sigma with this lens on wide open.. I was determined to buy this lens and use it on portrait&landscape stills but it is too soft at the maximum opening to use it on portraiture..
Haha I really don't care the aperture ring direction, since i have zero interest in Panasonic lenses 😂 I used to be a Sony fan but the S9 together this and other lenses of this Sigma series made me buy into L mount. So, your 4 year old video became interesting for S9 fans like me.
Wow, this could be my perfect street photography lens if I were using the S1 or S1R! Compact, good optics, and fast F2.8, almost nothing to complain about!
At least I found very little to complain about.
Matti, I think that Panasonic went their own route when designing aperture rings. As far as I'm concerned, the Sony, Fuji, and Zeiss share the same aperture ring direction, so in this case it's actually Panasonic who implemented the non-conventional aperture ring.
Sure, but because Sigma and Panasonic are part of the same alliance, I think Sigma should have followed Panasonic in this one. But, the lens is still very usable and lovely little lens. Thanks for commenting.
I also had one for review and can agree with you!
Thanks for sharing this review. I orderd this lense today for my sony camera. I know, it is not the sharpest on F2.8, but I like the look of historic pictures. I'll see what I get ;-)
I'm sure you'll like the lens. This lens is sharp at F2.8, but like every lens, it gets sharper by stopping down a bit.
I think this is awesome review and great real world pictures! Watched some other reviews (blah-blah) and think that they have issues with lens because not need another lens, but another photographer. Based on your images lens is very good, specially while it so small and travel friendly.
Thank you!
I hope Panasonic releases an "SX5" for this size of lens
Very nice small lens for a large camera. I found it acceptable with a good rendering. Relatively fast focus fall off at f4 and nothing too harsh in background rendering. Though, I suspect that it's light transmission value is on the low side per aperture setting. When I use it with auto ISO, the camera is setting values 1 to 1.3 stops higher than on my other setups. It's worth investigating... whether that's a camera or a lens issue.
I think it's a small lens for a small camera, the Sigma FP. Also, Panasonic will eventually make smaller L mount cameras as well. Thanks for your thoughts.
Many Thanks for the review. I have just ordered a secondhand one for my second hand Leica SL. which I bought only a few days again. I am planning to use my SL for my manual M mount lenses and my Hasselblad V lenses (via Kipon Baveyes speed booster). L mount cameras are not famous for their autofocus capability especially its poor AF-C tracking performance when comparing with other cameras. That said, this Sigma 45mm f2.8 would be a good walk round lens for the SL. By the way, I found your T shirt slogan quite interesting. It is true in some but not all circumstances. I will only use a mirrorless camera to shot anything fast moving when I have not got my Nikon D500 or D4s with me. With regard to your gripe about the aperture ring, the layout of those figures on Sigma are the same as those on Nikon and Sony. They are the same on Panasonic and Leica. It is akin to whether left hand or right hand drive car is better. I myself can't see any problem with it. Perhaps I don't follow a partiuclar brand or type of camera religiously. Don't get me wrong, I love my Rolleiflex f2.8 even it has inaccurate metering, no autofocus or LCD preview screen but I will not use it for shooting birds in flight.
Thanks for sharing.
Nice review and looking forward to more pictures from kuala lumpur. Enjoy your trip.
Thanks! Check out the next video on Tuesday and you’ll see some nice pictures😀
The price of this lens has come down significantly now on the used market. Thank you for tipping sigma to make smaller lenses!! Wish Leica would do it … but they seem to be downsizing and avoiding to upset other manufacturers in the l mount alliance who are going for this “benevolent” oligopoly
Matti, this is exactly the field test video I was looking for. I have two questions for you: (1) what did you think of the close focusing characteristics of this lens and (2) did you do much PP work on the first two photos of the gentlemen in the street? They are both really fine images. I could have sworn they were taken with the Panny S 50/1.4.
Thanks! I think the close focus image quality is fine and the min distance useful 24 cm, but it's not a macro of course. I did not do much post production to any of the photos, just some basic things in LR, like contrast, exposure fine tuning etc.
I think every L mount photographer should buy this lens..
Colour is punchy and sharp..
But if you have chance, please shoot some lady's skin tone too..
Thank you
Thanks for your comment. This really is a lovely little lens.
sulantoblog I tried this lens yesterday.. Very fun to shoot with
Color is much more a camera body characteristic (that you can easily change) than a glass characteristic these days.
I notice that there isn’t the guide next to the aperture ring for depth afield
You are right, there is not DOF scale, because the ring has no hard stops.
How does this compare with the Lumix 42.5...good and bad, please? Addendum: noticed your hand strap in some videos...what is yours and or what would you recommend...Thanks again for the superb video work and information!
There is not much point to compare the Lumix 42,5mm and this Sigma, because the other one is a full frame lens and the other is a micro 4/3 lens. Two different systems and different lenses.
@@mattisulanto So this won't or will work on a G9?
@@MrFirstdance2000 It's an L mount lens, and I mention that also in the video, so it won't work on any micro 4/3 camera. If you need something like 45mm for your G9, there are two Lumix and two Olympus options to choose from. There's also the Sigma 56mm f/1.4, which is a bit longer, but also very nice lens.
The aperture ring matches a motion picture lens. Professional motion picture are standardized. Thing like follow focus, and aperture all are the same on every lens. This lens is designed for use on their fp and other motion picture cameras. Here's a photo of a fp with a cine zoom lens www.eoshd.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Sigma-FP-Cinema-Rig.jpg
Thanks for that info.
fully sympathycally. Great video and was also my tough to buy this lens. Thx a lot for sharing.
Thank you!
@@mattisulanto it's a pleasure and you are always welcome.
Aperture ring is the same as the Sony lenses with high numbers on left
P. S. this lens has the same aperture ring direction like Fuji, but I think Panasonic way is a bit more practically because A / ans max. aperture are near byside and you can switch faster to A.
BTW. Is focus by wire... the lens will not fly 😉
Ok, it doesn't fly, but I've heard people taking a camera for a spin or even test drive. What about that?😀 I can make my lens fly also. Not very far though.😀
@@mattisulanto OK, it doesn't mater if you fly, focus or roll with your lens. At the end the photo / outcome is important 📸👍
@@ju2705s Please don't get me wrong. I really do appreciate it when people correct my English, which is far from perfect.
@@mattisulanto your English is perfect and I would never correct anyone because I am from GER and have the worst English ever. Thx a lot for review the 45, I sold my G9 last week 😢 and will get my S1 tomorrow. The 45 is going to be my 2nd lens... directly after the kit. Have a nice day and many regards.
Is there something wrong with my lens? When I turn the aperture ring, my Leica SL doenst respond and the iris doesnt reepond.
I really can't say without seeing the camera and lens. Take the camera to a local camera store and see if they can help.
sulantoblog I updated the firmware. Thank goodness it solved the problem! I had old firmware before the alliance.
Well done. A difficult focal length for anything specific.
Thanks. It's like a standard lens.
You forgot to tell about the electronic first curtain shutter and focus throw/angle settings that does they work with this lens!
Thanks for bringing that up and sorry about the mistake. I must have still suffered from the jet lag😀I'm not sure if the lens has anything to to with the shutter type, but all the options work with this lens. Also the focus throw can be selected in the menu.
would you say if i could only buy one for video on my S1H would it be the Sigma 45 or the Sigma 35 1.4 Art ?
It depends a lot on what kind of work you do, but since the 45mm is a native L lens I would take that.
sulantoblog perfect !
Has anyone tried a tiny 50mm f2.4 Summarit on the S1/S1R? Thats a small package too although not autofocus.
There are also some other small and more affordable manual focus lenses worth considering, if autofocus is not necessary.
Is AFC available on S1/S1R using this lens?
Yes, it's available.
I like this lens but it can’t use on G9. Sad......
Take the 20/1.7 and be happy about the smaller size, weight and price. ;-)
believe it or not, this lens is making me stay with the S1 instead of changing to different bodies.
I do believe you😀
is the lens weather sealed??
Please see the video at 4:05.
How about cheapo, sharp fantastic 45mm f/1.8?
I'll make more lens reviews all the time.
@@mattisulanto thank you for your answer, I appreciate it.
Why is there not just one word about the video recording features?
Because I'm a photographer and my video skills are very basic. Besides, all that I said pretty much applies to video as well. But maybe I should mention some video related things in my future reviews. Thanks for you feedback.
@@mattisulanto Yes, because the S1 is used by lots of cinematographers like myself.
Looks like a joke on the body... and its great. Finally we have something travel friendly.
....inverted aperture ring sucks though
How about wide angle lenses
Like sigma 16mm f1.4
