When I first arrived to my duty station in Berlin in 1984, I bought a bright orange 1973 BMW 2002 from another airman who was leaving for the States. I loved it. It was a freaking go-cart. Great for whipping through traffic in the big city and you could cram four in it for a night of pubbing. Didn't have the money to convert it to US specs to ship back, but I wish I would have.
Wow you just told my story. I was stationed in Frankfurt back in 78 and i too bought a colorado orange 71 1600. Drove it for 26 months and passed it down to another GI.
He's right that the 2002 wasn't part of the e-series, it was actually part of a run of cars called the neue klasse that helped establish BMW as a "drivers" brand.
I nearly owned one! Yeah, the e21 was between the '02 and the e30. As said, you also had the 3.0 etc. The M10 engine is a great engine, they will last for ever and even carried on into the e30, it ended up being the 1400bhp Benetton BMW '80's Formula 1 engine, they are so, so strong. BMW used old production car engine as they had worked their casting stresses out. The only down side is no rack and pinion steering. The '02 was years ahead of it's time. Quite a few euro cars were from that time. I wish you could drive some cars that were popular over here in the UK. For example, the Triumph Dolomite Sprint, 1974 car, but with alloys wheels and a 127bhp, 2 litre engine with 16 valves running off of one camshaft! So many interesting cars!
It's even said BMW left the blocks outside to weather in the elements for a few months to “seasoning” the block to eliminate any internal casting stress and stabilize all the dimensions.
I love seeing old cars and trucks from the 70s get showcased. The thin, light doors, the relatively bare dashes, the way you had to be active in driving them. Today's cars are fantastic, full of safety features and technology, and that is wonderful, but when people brag about what great drivers they are and all their stories an in modern vehicles... they don't know what driving is. Their vehicles make driving feel like being Tony Stark, sitting at ease, making his high tech power suit fly around to do the work by remote control. Being at the wheel of a car like this is like being on a motorcycle, in that you are a lot more "in the moment" when you are doing it. You are more aware of what is going on around you, and how at risk you are. Got a coworker, drives a $70k-$80k pickup truck that he's boosted, lifted, tweaked and customized to the $120k neighbourhood. To be fair, I've only seen two other jacked up Fords that looked the same as his. That may seem mean, but in these parts there are a lot of trucks. A LOT. That there are only three with such closely matching custom touches is kind of incredible. I mean, there are dozens of murdered out Rams around here. But I digress. Few weeks ago I had to give him a ride in my Chevy Impala. To him, being in that sedan was like Mario Kart. He was gripping the "Holy Shit" handle the entire time, and in shock at how close to the ground and how close to other vehicles we were. It was just regular driving at legal speeds in normal traffic. But he was taken out of the sanctuary of his tower of power. He was no longer higher up, bigger, and more distanced from the real world. The roof of my Chevy doesn't even reach to the door handles on his truck, so riding with me was bringing him back down with the common folk. That is what driving something like this BMW 2002, or anything from that era is like. You are out of your comfortable armour and you are set right in the middle of what is going on. It's a rush. It's invigorating. And once you get the feel of it, your perspective on driving is never the same.
The first car I owned was a 76 2002. It did not matter if it was wet pavement, a bumpy road or dirt, it loved to be driven hard. I have not had the chance to drive the super high end cars, but that vehicle would tell me about every pebble in the road. It was enough to leave a bothersome Carrera 4 driver behind on highway 41 back in the 90's. Certainly not the fastest car in the world, but I really wish I still had it around to teach my kids how to drive. It was balanced to a point where I could throw it into a turn, and steer it with the gas pedal. Lift off the throtttle, get the back end out a bit, then back on. steer with your right foot. It would not win any races these days, but you actually got to drive... It was joy on dirt too. Tap the brake, pitch the back end out and hit the gas
Three of us went to the VW dealer round the time the Scirocco was released ('74)....Went out to the used car section and there stood a 2002 sedan w/over 100,000 miles on it. Got the keys and drove it around the adjacent industrial roads...Holy Crap this thing handled like a dream, the shifter went snick-snick, your vision was unobstructed and it was FUN...I owned a Formula Firebird and it paled in comparison....
THE ONE for me. Always has been, always will be. Owned a 1974 2002 that I sold a 1992 Sentra SE-R for. My love for the 2002 stemmed from a gentle, loving landlord that took our family in when my father deployed to Korea in the mid-70s. Until he died a few years ago, he always had a base model BMW...my first ride in a BMW was in his 2000 back in 1975. While others will lust over Porsches and such, the 2002 will remain my "ultimate."
Agreed. Also e21 owner. Even with 200,000+ miles on mine, it still purrs smoothly and has a wonderful note. The suspension setup is great too. Ours is all stock still (except for bilstien shocks), so its got lots of hilarious body roll, but around town and on tight curvies, its still a blast.
"when it revs high it sounds like it's about to break" - every bmw engine ever. great engines, but even the die-hards have to give me that they sound a bit raspy and strained at their limits (even if they're not).
72-74 were fuel injected in their tii form, as well as the 74 Turbo and 77-83 E21 320i, and 84 E30 M10 320i. 84 manifold and associated parts are commonly used to megasquirt these engines.
I wish this design were revived-wing windows are great-don't need A/C. The glass is great-you can see everything-plus a light clutch and responsive engine. I would buy a new one!
I drive an euro spec bmw e21 and I can tell you its basically a 2002 driving experience and size in a closer to e30 styling and performance especially with the m20 2.3 beauty of an engine; it's a pretty nice combination if you don't miss power steering...
The E21 did originally come with the M10, not sure about the M20. Zachary Neal: The M20 is actually a very solid engine. I know from experience. The 2.7 super eta had tons of torque and would take a beating. The 2.5 loves to rev and sounds wonderful, and lasts forever. All you have to do is adjust the valves once in a while. I have a buddy with an E30 325iX, he did a homebrew turbo on an engine with over 500,000km on it. Beat the shit out of it, tons of blow by, still starts and runs. No need to be afraid of the M20.
useless knowledge about the null zwo turbo: the turbo was taken from the market because auf the oil crisis back in the days. the 02 turbo was such a big "fuck you" to all pc people back in the days mostly because of the "turbo" decal written backwards so everybody could read it in the backmirrors when you where tailgating on the Autobahn. Sadly they are now round about 100 grand here in germany. in my opinion that car is more epic and more of a legend than the e30 m3 because it was such a big "fuck you" to all the pc morons back in the days. we need something like this again.
i don't have a great knowledge but i remember watching something about the turbo with its vinyls, they are such a nice looking car, I think the models i mentioned were available in the British Market, i don't know if the turbo was, that would be interesting to know?
Hi there from Colombia I love that car Because has a great history My neighbor is selling his bmw e21 and he told me that he's going to wait me for saving my money because he said tha the car with me will be in good hands.
Kugelfischer injection was offered on the BMW 2000tii and 2002tii ('70-'75) and also used by Porsche as far back as '64. This is a mechanical port injection system, not throttle body. Not sure if they were available in the US market, though.
You have to drive an air cooled vw. I'm a little surprised at your reaction to the bottom hinged pedals. They were on all the millions of vw's they sold in the 50's thru the 70's.
Keep in mind that BMW used factory M10 blocks as the basis of their racing engines all through the 60s and 70s. Some well into the 5-600hp territory. The M10 also gave birth to the M42/44.
Funny. I thought the BMW motorcycles were the only ones to have an unusual way to operate turn signals. I've honked the horn on mine too many times when I meant to cancel the TS. Neat car.
Yes the E21 is the first 3 series and is the forgotten child of the family, but when you remove the ugly US spec bumpers and go euro spec they look much better than the E30 imo. The E21 car came with the same motor as the 2002 and came with a 4 speed and also a 5 speed (this is the 5 speed in this car now). I have an E21 320i sport witch came with rear sway bar, lsd (also popular 2002 upgrade), front valance and also Recaros. At the moment i'm motor swapping an S52 and have an original Group 2 flare kit for the car. Hope to have the motor in next month and on the road early spring.
I was thinking of putting an s52 into my e21 too but i'll just run my m10 into the ground then swap it out. Sounds like you have some great ideas for a sweet build!
I knew my head gasket was weak and leaking a small amount of coolant into the cylinders. But last week it started consuming a lot of coolant so I decided its time. But I originally bought a totaled parts car for relevantly cheap and have been gathering parts for a while. I have everything figured out so far except the wiring. But that should be fairly simple for the most part once I get the motor into the bay. I also have the euro front and rear sheet metal I will be cutting/welding into placing. I just need work to slow down a bit so i can get my hands dirty.
I have been meaning to purchase a euro front as well. Really works wonders on the car looks wise. Will you have a build trend in the future? I would enjoy seeing how your swap goes when it gets underway.
I'm on bimmerfroums.com and more than likely I will be posting some on there. I may also do a first start video like vr6 24v turbo in my profile so I can also post on the forum.
Reminds me of the 318i. It was the most mocked BMW back in the day due to the 4 banger. I never really was a big fan of the German cars due to the cost of ownership. But, I would just kill to get my hands on a new Audi S8!
The E30's GRANDFATHER not great grandfather. Why does everyone forget the E21? E21's are the best. The same M10 but with a revised mgmt system. M10's were carburated several ways starting in the late 60's and then went to fuel injection IN THE HEAD and later into the manifold in E30 318i's from about '85 to '91 the engine was used for something like 25 years and in much better cars too. Mr. Regular kept pointing out small improvements that could have been made and they were made in the E21. In retribution for these crimes you need to review one. Your'e invited to see mine sometime if it ever get's finished. Try to find one sometime at the very least.
are the seats early Recaro C-Classic? I've the late Recaro C-Classic in my Giulia. In my opinion the C-Classic the Classic sport seat. 👍 The steering wheel looks like a Indianapolis Formel, so it's called in Germany
Loved my e21, bought it for $500 due to bad rust. 5 speed 320i with factory ac, 5 speed, and LSD. Everything worked amazingly. It sat for years before I bought it and after I cleaned it up it ran great and blew ice cold ac. The ac was still lackluster though due to how big of a greenhouse the e21 has. That motor was worked over or something. It threw down 200psi of compression even on all four cylinders and all the gaskets were brand new. Shame that the rust got so bad I had to let it go. Such great little cars.
I feel drawn to these types of cars I seen a 80s nissan sentra its a little rusty and the dash is cracked, I can see my self in these cars I love square sports cars like these
The later 2002s (2002tii) didn't have throttle body fuel injection. It was a mechanical port injection system (IIRC it was derived from diesel pump) with some crazy german name. I think a similar system was used on some Porches.
His Twitter says it's Nick (@nickromantv), but he could go by his middle name outside of work or it's a nickname... the mystery remains unsolved ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
As a 2002 owner, this video is better muted. The owner knows an unfortunately small amount about his own car (and of BMWs from a similar era. The 3.0csl and its brethren were, in fact, an E chassis car. The E9). According to him, my 1976 2002 is fuel injected! That's great news as tii's, the fuel injected 2002, go for far more than the carbureted models. The carbureted, fuel objected, and Turbo models were actually all offered at the same time at one point, so his "1974-1976" figure is entirely made up. Also, saying the 2002 is an E10 is inaccurate. In fact, it's a type 114 (or, internally, E-114). The BMW 2002 Turbo concept car, on the other hand, was an E25. The 2002 touring was coded E10, but I've also seen tourings marked E6 under the hood so I can't make a concrete claim about that. The whole thing is rather confusing, but the point remains his car is not actually an E10. Regardless of any of that, I'm glad Mr. RCR finally reviewed a 2002... I just wish he had picked a better owner.
You are correct. My tii was a '72 and was was actually built some time after Aug '71. At least the Klippan belts had tags with Aug '71 on them. It was the 44th delivered to NA, given its SN of 2760044. As far as I know, there was no tii available in '75 or '76 and, therefore, no fuel injected version in those years.
Josh, in all honesty the car itself and the fact that you drive it and enjoy it is far more important than knowing all the details. I admit I have done far more research on these cars than might be healthy, and occasionally forget that not everyone has gone as far down the rabbit hole as I have. I do wish that the information in the video was more accurate, but hopefully you'll retain some info from my comment. Everything is a learning process after all. Yours looks like a very well sorted car so if you keep driving it and taking good care of it, all is forgiven ;) (I also apologize for saying "better owner" when what I meant was "more knowledgable")

Actually no. The 02 models were derivatives of the Neue Klasse, not part of it.

I want one.
I have no reason to want one but I do.
SkuzzyJ It's a 2002, it happens to all of us.
SkuzzyJ I understand you, they are just so nice!
SkuzzyJ You don't need a reason, it happens to all of us. lol
Bought one as my first car, best and nicest-to-drive car I ever had
You don't need a reason! Great cars as they are. You can even daily one if you want to.
Just one word: jealous.
Roads Untraveled haha same here
Roads Untraveled I never knew that these existed until this video. I officially need one now. *I would really love for him to review my Nissan S12*
getting one real soon let me know if you want a review.

Not meaning to be disrespectful to a fellow 02 owner, but brush up on your research before posting this. You are misinforming people about our cars.
2002s are just the most beautiful BMW cars ever made. I want one.
there up there but the 3.0 CSL is one of my dream cars
Shane Massa that's a gorgeous one, but not "regular" enough. ;)
InvictvsNox E46 M3 CSL is also a beauty in my opinion.
Yes there a rare breed
Buy one there not to expensive

Ah so that's why BMW drivers don't use their turn signals
jimmy7train i missed it why?
@@ZambonieDude At the beginning when RCR asks the owner if he thinks he'd miss anything, he explains as to why he thinks he'd miss the turn signals
Ironically that right-hand turn signal is a joy to use, it's almost a shame not to use it even without the safety implications.

BMW, fucking up turn signals so bad owners haven't used them since the 70's.

if I'm not mistaken bmw strapped a turbo to the m10 and made over a thousand hp in their f1 cars.
Over 1500hp in qualifying trim.
72-74 were fuel injected in their tii form, as well as the 74 Turbo and 77-83 E21 320i, and 84 E30 M10 320i. 84 manifold and associated parts are commonly used to megasquirt these engines.
ahhh the M10 engine, it was used in F1 and at one point produced around 1500BHP. an absolute masterpiece!!

love these guys
The 2002tii actually came out as a 1972 model with Kügelfischer mechanical fuel injection.
I think the top spec model was a 2002tii, BMW also produced a 1602 and 1802, there may have even been a 1502 but I'm not as sure on that one

Kevin MacGregor, thats the tii?
The tii is fuel injected. The turbo is too, but with boost!

Had one and sold it, best thing I ever did. Those cars break all the time.
Keep in mind that BMW used factory M10 blocks as the basis of their racing engines all through the 60s and 70s. Some well into the 5-600hp territory. The M10 also gave birth to the M42/44.
the most powerful f1 engine ever(1400hp) was based on the m10
E3 and E9 were before the E21 & E24. You'r welcome
This is a real classic BMW experience. The closest this comes to is an Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV from the same era.
'cause Axies "Power" 😛

Ted wants to give it a try...? Did you just tell us the Roman's name? TED THE ROMAN !? THE is a funny middle name.
Reminds me of the 318i. It was the most mocked BMW back in the day due to the 4 banger. I never really was a big fan of the German cars due to the cost of ownership. But, I would just kill to get my hands on a new Audi S8!
the M10 carried on to early E30 318's.
the .2 litres went to tall pistons.
Been waiting for this review for a long time .
looks excellent
invest in a mic so we can appreciate the sound?
oh yes dadi
olskoolnewpaint would be a bad move on my part. brokers say it ain't worth shit
@olskoolnewpain So we can appreciate the sound?
I own a 1975 ... and I love it !
I have an e21 and it has an m10 in it. But it is the fuel ejected one.
Love this car !
Tii was not throttle body injected. It was definitely port injected.
Nice sound for a 4 cylinder
cptnoremac dat carburetor tho!
car looks fun
I like it. I like it alot. Would like to have one this coming from a cat who has a very nice 1970 SS 396 4sp. Chevelle. Yes I really do like them.
And if you want pretty, try a 3.0 CS.... it's.... something..... See it.
I want one of these to go with my E30.
are the seats early Recaro C-Classic? I've the late Recaro C-Classic in my Giulia. In my opinion the C-Classic the Classic sport seat. 👍
The steering wheel looks like a Indianapolis Formel, so it's called in Germany
Does this car give you the fizzy sensations?
When are they coming to the UK?
you'd probably find it a lot easier to modulate the pedals on these m/t cars you drive with thinner soled shoes.
I heard Blue Ridge, are you in North GA? ATLBimmers?
It's a dream, working on it!
the owner reminds me if Ned Flanders
So is this one of his friends that let him drive the car, or someone from the internet that appreciates his channel?
It was mechanical multi-port fuel injection, not throttle body fuel injection.
Where was this filmed?
man the e21 gets no respect lmao
any e21 fans out there?
I own one
Jared McAllister I own 2, even with the quirky mechanical injection. have a blast everytime i drive them.
I owned a 1982 320i ... For 10 years great little car ... I now own a 1975 2002 and I love my 2002
Loved my e21, bought it for $500 due to bad rust.
For an autocross car, you sure do have to turn the steering wheel a LOT as compared to something like a miata.
Nice R107 you passed ;)
but does he rally?
I feel drawn to these types of cars I seen a 80s nissan sentra
its a little rusty and the dash is cracked, I can see my self in these cars
I love square sports cars like these
they are so minimalist
With all these XXX return of xander ads I get on every video I really don't want to go see it now
The later 2002s (2002tii) didn't have throttle body fuel injection. It was a mechanical port injection system (IIRC it was derived from diesel pump) with some crazy german name. I think a similar system was used on some Porches.
3E its called a Kugelfischer mechanical injection, used with itb's on a lot of race cars of the era
Yeah that sounds right. I think they used it on the CSL race cars and the M1's
Good Schtuff!
I wish if u took it on a longer drive
l have 2 ot them 75 02, 74 tii, restoration in progress
the owner reminds me of Ned Flanders
Ted? Could that be the Roman's real name?
His Twitter says it's Nick (@nickromantv), but he could go by his middle name outside of work or it's a nickname... the mystery remains unsolved ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
do a original Audi Quattro when you can bro
R26Roman sure, because those are as plentiful as a 2002.
i have an e21 over in hatfield by pypes performance
What aftermarket steering wheel is this? Anyone know?
what exhaust is that?
what does a choke do?
No exterior shots? C'mon man!
Mr regular you should review a RHD car one of these days
You mean, like the Trueno, or the Silvia?
Discount Comedy has he done a few already? I didn't know
Grumman LLV.
Noa S he's done an AE86 trueno, an S13 Silvia, and he drove a RHD JDM CRX too
is this in pa, or md?
nevermind, its Lancaster pa. i live near there!
yey
lot of headroom, apparently
Sorry, next time I will do more research on the questions he ask a head of time so I am 100% on everything I said. Noted.
Yours looks like a very well sorted car so if you keep driving it and taking good care of it, all is forgiven ;)
(I also apologize for saying "better owner" when what I meant was "more knowledgable")
track day bro
i bet mr.regular will by one
the m10 may be a cool engine in some forms but the majority were beyond anemic shit
That wheel sucks but nice car .... And the M10 was around until 88 i think...
