My Aunt & Uncle lived & ran the tourist/gift shop in the 60's I treasure the post cards they sent with stories of what they did & people they met while being the care takers of the Crater!
Heck yes it's worth the visit! So's the mountains near Flag, along with the lava fields. Highway sounds out there? The sound of freedom moving. They really have fixed the place up since I was last there in the early 2000's...
Sure, it's worth the visit. Breathtaking, indeed. A meteor 50,000 yrs. ago, 150 ft. across hit what is now Arizona with an impact like 100 tons of TNT, blowing out a crater a MILE ACROSS and 500 ft. deep? Heck, yeah. THE MUSEUM at the crater is sure worth the visit too. Pictures are deceiving, its hard to fathom the size. Thanks for the visit!
Get your figures right. The vertical impact energy was estimated to be equivalent to 4.5 to 5 megatons of TNT; est. weight of the meteor, 180,000 tons; est. speed 15 km/s; est. crater depth on impact 86 meters.
Marvelous video, Russ ! Meteor Crater is a must-see landmark in the Western United States. Imagine the tremendous explosion when the meteor hit the ground ! Johnny Carson once joked "McDonald's says they have served over 10 million hamburghers ... The Company is seriously considering the purchase of a second cow ..." RICHARD
We went to Vegas, jumped in our rental car and drove east to petrified forest and hit most of the sites on the way back. Painted desert, meteor, grand canyon. Then we hit the sites just outside Vegas, Red Rock canyon, Valley of Fire, etc. By the time we turned our car in we put on 1599 miles. Then we spent 2 hours in Vegas and flew back home. We had a very nice trip. Love the videos.
I was driving truck with my older brother while in college during summer and I-40 wasn't completed there yet. I asked if we could go see it since we had several days before we had to be back in CA and he said yes against his better judgement, but said if we can't turn around I can back it up to the highway. Luckily back then there was plenty of space to turn around from when there was mining. We turned around before going to see the crater. My brother enjoyed it and he bought a meteorite too in the little gift shop. I don't remember how much it was because my brother paid and didn't complain about it, so it couldn't have been a $25 equivalent.
When I flew down from Colorado to Mesa, we flew right over the crater. It was awesome from the air too. Want to make another trip to see it on the ground. Thanks for the beautiful videos Russ.
You do it right Russ. Get there when it opens before the crowds. I’ve been there three times, late 50s, 70s and ‘06 and it was packed each time. Very well done my friend.
Well, I’m a standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona, and such a fine sight to see. It’s a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowin’ down to take a look at me.
Back in 2003 when my wife and I were traveling and working seasonal jobs we worked a winter at the rv park. I was lucky enough to get too tour all the way around the rim of the crater it was cool to be able to see the crater all the way around.
Thanks for the visit. Last time I was there was in 1967. I drove across the country from CT to CA and back on 80W and 40/66E. Took the short detour over to see it. Wow, one serious hole. No buildings around except an older Airstream for the rangers that worked there. Drove right up to the edge and started lookin and walkin around, hiked/climbed down to the center. It really is neat. I think the science center is a good idea 'cause most folks don't know anything about it or the planets or space or universe, so they get a little education while there. It's amazing how much things changed in 55 yrs. P.S. I liked and subbed to your channel; very well done. Here's to 100K.
WOW ! You always have great videos, but this one , WOW. Im 64 y.o and 3 places I wanted to see my whole life was the Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater and Dole pineapple fields in Hawaii. I have been to Dole and this fall/winter I hope to be out west. Thank you for yet ANOTHER great video.
Russ. Thanks for the good hearted humor with the attentive white-faced roadside friend. I had to laugh out loud. Thanks for the crater tour. That crater was WOW worthy!
I would think they would be able to tell by the rocks in the crater whether it was volcanic or from outer space? I like the museum, they did a good job with it.
We stayed there in May 2022 on our Route 66 trip. The person in the RV park confirmed that the dirt exit road (south) is original Route 66, as is the stretch across the road that leads to the old crater welcome center. Nice park. The fires near Flagstaff closed our originally planned campground and we ended up at Meteor Crater.
Too early for me Russ. Being retired, my day starts a lot later than yours... lol. Thanks for taking us along with you to this great destination. You are right about it being open and flat where you can see for miles. Maybe that is why they landed the meteor here. Made sure they did not knock down anyone's home. I also appreciate your evaluation on your layover spots. It is of great help. Be safe as you continue your travels.
I like visiting the crater but I've only been maybe 6 times , the first time I saw it was back in the late 60's when I was about 10 years old . Still like to see it now !
I was there in the 70s. It sure has changed. None of that was there We walked down into the crater You can't imagine the size until you look up. None of the things you've shown was there then. Wow, 👌 wish I could come back. To old now. Lucky you.
I truly enjoyed your video- Love the Park and Love the Museum- Best of all, its not your typical crowded tourist place. I'll make sure to make a stop when in the area. Thank you for sharing.👍
I last went there decades ago. Admission was cheap because outside of the gift shop not much inside. But they had several large meteorites, like the one at front, on displayed on loan. The capsule was there but they must of fixed it up. You could walk around the rim and down into the crater. And you could buy bits of the original meteorite that was gathered from the surrounding debris field back then . I still have my piece. Though speculation even then if it actually a ground or air impact.
The meteorite that created that is called Canyon Diablo. You can buy specimens of it for around $2 a gram. They went up in price. Years ago they were around .50 a gram.
Thanks Russ for another interesting video! I hiked to the bottom of the crater in 1972 (not allowed now) and it was great. What a perspective being at the bottom looking up. Stay safe!
Went there in 95 June fire on Mt Humphrey, and snow from Indian summer at the Grand canyon also , Sedona positive energy was awesome, me and uncle David Casillas RIP 2015 miss your jokes always..😅✌️🙏☯️💪🥱
🙋♀️Hello Russ! Do you know where the nearest McDonalds is? 🤣🤣 Made my day! I liked seeing the Meteor Crater. Enjoyed visiting the museum too. I couldn't imagine the impact that would have been felt by the Farmer & his Wife. One Summer day, we heard the oddest sound. My Sister & I came out of our homes with our children looking out from behind us. We couldn't believe what we saw. The barn that Grandpaul built, collapsed. Just like that. No wind. Just was tired of standing I guess. Oddest thing.
That's a nice park to overnight in. Sure glad you were able to have AC for the night. Wow, can't imagine that impact that would have made. That's a nice museum, pretty big. Messing with the cows, lol. 🙂👍
In thee 80s I took my 8 year old niece here. I watched a movie that showed that 300 million TONS of rock was instantly vaporized. Which gave me an idea. With so much molten rock raining down like raindrops, I was bound to find some evidence of it. I stopped along that 5 mile road connecting to I-40. I drove down a few hundred feet and pulled over and looked. We found a LOT of little melted looking small pieces, like drops.
Visited this when I was a kid. You could actually stand on the side of the crater back then and walk a bit down into the crater. However, the owner must have decided that people should pay to see the crater, so created a museum. Last I read, the meteor did not actually strike the earth. Rather, it blew up just before it hit and the crater is just a result of the explosive force. Great place for families to take their kids for science education.
Wow! That meteor just barely missed the visitor center...LOL! It is an awesome sight to see. You covered it very well.
That was a good one.😅
@@BLD426Really. I wish I'd thought of that.
We were there in June of 1973 and loved it! At that time you could hike to the bottom.
My Aunt & Uncle lived & ran the tourist/gift shop in the 60's
I treasure the post cards they sent with stories of what they did & people they met while being the care takers of the Crater!
My wife and I were here September 2021. Very nice RV Park, one of our favorites. Loved Meteor Crater also.
Heck yes it's worth the visit! So's the mountains near Flag, along with the lava fields. Highway sounds out there? The sound of freedom moving. They really have fixed the place up since I was last there in the early 2000's...
Agree. We were there in 2005 or so and the place now looks completely renovated. good to see they are spending those $20 bills on upkeep!
Sure, it's worth the visit. Breathtaking, indeed. I went to the crater in the late 60's but the admission fee was too steep so I left and satisfied my curiosity with pictures.
Thanks for the tour. Its definitely on my visit list for one of my next trips out to Arizona.
Thanks for the ride along Russ !!! Very cool 😎!!! Thanks
I still haven't stopped there! One day. Thanks Russ. Enjoying all the adventures you take us on!!!!
Man that is cool!
When I flew down from Colorado to Mesa, we flew right over the crater. It was awesome from the air too. Want to make another trip to see it on the ground. Thanks for the beautiful videos Russ.
Enjoyed this presentation as always. You do a great job showcasing Arizona sites Russ... Thank you.

That was fun
Thanks for letting us tag along
Hey Russ!!! Let's find a "BIG HOLE" In the "GROUND"!!! Be Safe!!!
I liked Meteor Crater a lot and my wife loved it! A real high spot for her SW USA vacation.
The Meteor Crater museum is pretty neat… 💚 Thank you Russ for continuing our travels despite current gas prices… Enjoying your Vlogs!👍🏽
Thanks for a look at the crater today. Very impressive hole! 🇦🇺🇦🇺

Came here looking for this one....I don't think very many people caught the subtle reference. 👍
Last week or so I made a comment about seeing things in your video, I saw this on the same trip 50 years ago on the way to California great
I mean wow that thing is huge absolutely stunning 😀

Wow Russ, you're the only one there. It was more crowded when I was there. People from all over the world.
Arizona Office of Tourism needs to sponsor you.
Thanks, bub. I'm over here in the UK, 57, an' I'll never get to see it in person, so thanks for taking us along with you, much appreciated x
I passed the exit times in my life and always wondered. I'm too old now so Thank you so much for taking me there.
which means you have nothing better to do, so go there now

Cool Ride Brother!👍
I'm always amazing how close it came to hitting the Visitor Center!!
Great video, Russ
That was awesome watching that thing explode like that wow
When ever I hear your giggle I know all is right with the world.
The crater and museum are so interesting and very much worth visiting. We enjoyed the well kept and clean campground too.
I was there in the 70s. It sure has changed. None of that was there

Wife and I spent a few hours there back In 2020 ...it's a nice place everyone should visit
Great stop at Meteor Crater! So cool! Thank you Russ! Enjoyed it!❤️😀🚙

Hello RVerTV Russ, Meador Creator , Too Cool For School. Thanks for the Day.👍
Enjoyed this very much! I want to go see this one day soon! ❤❤❤
Worth every penny ! ..EXCITING to look at.
Still an amazing sight😎😎😎😎👍👍👍😊👌
Fun video, that place is so cool. Thanks for the video! It's on my bucket list.
Very cool!
Thanks Russ for another interesting video! I hiked to the bottom of the crater in 1972 (not allowed now) and it was great. What a perspective being at the bottom looking up. Stay safe!
That would have been so cool. Minus, the hike back up!
The hike back up wasn’t too bad … the next day I hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back up in one day … that was tiring 😀
Went there in 95 June fire on Mt Humphrey, and snow from Indian summer at the Grand canyon also , Sedona positive energy was awesome, me and uncle David Casillas RIP 2015 miss your jokes always..😅✌️🙏☯️💪🥱

That definitely was an awesome video thanks
Its changed a lot since I was there in 2007!
Yes it has........impressive renovations!
I am absolutely shocked that you were the first one at the meteor crater! LOL!
3:49....."No, mooooooooove along."
Very nice video... Thank you...🙏🙏
...that's a vast landscape out there...informatively nice video.
That's pretty awesome that big hole in the ground
Thank you for the tour as I will probably never get there. Curious that no vegetation grows there.
I was there about a month ago and I also stood on the corner in Winslow
Lovin' it !! Be sure you stay hydrated, Russ
With Google Earth street view you can be at the bottom of the crater and you can see that US flag up close among other interesting stuff.
Thanks Russ! Thing I always wonder is what happened to the stuff that was in the hole before it became a hole. 🥴 Stay cool and safe out there.
It all washed away with the water that came up out of the deep. That is not from a meteor its from the waters below. A lot like a sinkhole.
That's a nice park to overnight in. Sure glad you were able to have AC for the night. Wow, can't imagine that impact that would have made. That's a nice museum, pretty big. Messing with the cows, lol. 🙂👍
Added another list to visit. Thanks.

We visited there a few years ago. It was FANTASTIC !!!
I wanted to see this video again cuz I like that meteor that big hole in the ground that's really neat
Thank you Russ too cool
Thanks for sharing your travel adventures!
Been there 2 times I love it also been in that campground store they got some good stuff in there
Now I'mgong to have that old RR song stuck in my head all day. You mentioned going to the corner and Winslow Arizona in the same sentence. lol
as always Russ,another great video
I'm glad all that was not there in the70s. We got to walk down into the crater. There was an old truck in there.
Awesome video!
*Love your channel!*
I sure enjoy traveling with you!
Well that's so amazing
Yes definitely worth it
I live about 2 hrs from there, So 100% worth the drive
Amazing!
