    I was 6 years old in 1960. My family was moving to L.A. from Oklahoma City. I remember stopping here on our way west. I believe there was a parking lot and a trail leading up to the rim of the crater... I do recall it was B.I.G. Pleasant memories.

    Got flashbacks watching this. In 1995 I the chance to stop in with my then girlfriend now wife while we were under a load headed to the east coast of Georgia. I had been wanting to stop and she had wanted to stop so we did. Got there real early in the morning before things got busy. We also met a wonderful couple from England who was doing a self tour of our country. Looks like little has changed except for the "Collision" thing as I don't remember that. My wife's favorite memory there is of a coyote pimping across the land just before we got to the parking lot.

    I first saw Meteor Crater on August 3, 1964. I was 12 years old. Our family kept a journal of our road trip travels. About the only thing that is the same is the Crater itself. The visitor center, large gift shop and movie theater are modern and impressive. Not there in '64. AND the admission fee for 2 adults and 3 children in 1964 was a total of $2.50. That price is not as unbelievable as it seems when you consider other prices in 1964. For example, that same day we put 13 gallons of gas in our station wagon and the total cost was $3.89. A motel that night for the 5 of us cost $14.00.

    I was there years ago and was blown away by the size of the crater. It's hard enough to comprehend even when you are standing there looking at it. Of course, a camera can never catch it but you did a good job of it.

    If you get time stop at the power plant in the winter and drive to the back we're the trees are on ether side of the road it is beautiful because the water is in the 70s year round the steam freezes on the trees making them form a snow tunnel and you can catch fish all year, the catfish will bite on anything literally lol and yes the fish is safe to eat because the water is just to cool the plant kinda like a Hugh radiator in your car , we would catch prepare and eat with no delay lots of fun

    Hi Russ, greetings from the U.K. My wife and I have been lucky enough to have visited Meteor Crater twice. We based ourselves in Flagstaff the first time and Sedona the second time. We stayed at each place for a week on each visit and struck out to different places in the area each day before moving on each time to another base. Las Vegas on the first visit and Pagosa Springs in southern Colorado the second. However, e traveling we were traveling with different people each time but made sure we returned to Meteor Crater as it is such a great place. Loads of interesting items from the Apollo era and quite a lot to see and do. well worth the admission charge.
    If any of you get the chance to go there, do it, it will not disappoint you.

    Very interesting, said to be 50,000 years old. 560 feet deep, Privately owned as in 1903 Daniel Barringer staked a Mining claim that was signed by Theodore Roosevelt giving him 640 acres surrounding the crater. He mined from 03’- 05’ for the next 27 years thinking the meteor was below the crater. estimating it to be 100 million tons of meteorite iron ore worth a billion dollars at the time. Later on it was proved the meteor vaporized upon impact, what pieces found around the rim had fallen off before impact.

    • @freemind..
      @freemind.. Год назад

      There never was a meteorite. The heat required to vaporize 300,000 TONS of iron/nickle would melt huge amounts of surrounding contact rock. How much melt glass was found at/in the crater? None. Why not?? Because there is a diatreme beneath the crater - which is empirical evidence that the explosion came from BELOW.. not from above. The diatreme was found by a team from the USGS in 1975.

    0:53 Up ahead are the San Francisco Peaks that has the highest summit in Arizona -- Humphrey's Peak at 12,670 ft. I climbed it many times. About 30 years ago they allowed visitors to hike around the circumference. My wife, son, and I packed a lunch and made the hike. On the opposite side was an old gypsum mine. That wasn't mining equipment. They drilled for what was left of the meteorite but never found it. They did find many fragments that are magnetic. You can buy small fragments in the gift show.

    I've been to Arizona several times...love the state. I've been to the meteor crater twice. What always amazes me, especially having grown up the mountains of southeast Oklahoma, is how far you can see in Arizona. At 6:08 that's the mountains north of Flagstaff. Going down I-40 heading west, you can see those mountains from 70 miles away. BTW, they were mining for iron ore. They thought that the meteor was buried in the dirt down in the bottom of the crater. They didn't know that the meteor had exploded into a gazillion pieces.

    I was there with my Scamp 16, January 20th this year. On my way to Quartzite. Normally my stomach is doing flip flops at edges like this, even movies of cliffs, but I felt OK here. One more thing. I stayed at Black Bart's RV Park so I could leave my Scamp & go see the Grand Canyon. On the way there while on I-40 came around a corner to see a pick up truck with it's 5th wheel detached & laying on it's side blocking the shoulder & the right lane. High winds, glad I left my RV at Bart's.
