Was there in 1991 when we got married in Vegas from Ohio. Your camera was very good when you said it was real dark inside, looked good to us. Thanks for the visit.
Nice video. some years ago, I spoke with my wife's grandpa who worked on the Dam early on in the build, he was one of those that broke off rocks on the cliff sides while setting in a rope chair he didn't care for the particular job, but it was work that was needed. He passed away late 1990s
Sure do appreciate your taking us to see Hoover Dam, up close and personal. The green stone angels are beautiful. Such an interesting place. Thanks much!
My Mom said that my Grandfather worked on the Dam as a crane operator. During that time when she was a small child they actually lived in Las Vegas. He worked for Morrison Knudson out of Boise Idaho but they owned a large Wheat farm in Montana and he would work for them during the off farming months. Thanks for the tour Russ!!
Watching from the UK. This place fascinates me, the story of how it was built and the men who worked on it and the engineering behind it. I only recently became aware of how low the water is. Must be worrying for the people in the South West for both water and power.☹️
@@bassingbasics6621 I live in WI, and this is still worrying to me. It's worrying how ignorant people are in regards to the consequences for all of us. Canary in a coal mine... and the canary is almost feet up.
John m , In this video, he focused mostly on the structure of the dam and the big geographical features. What’s not shown too much are the beautiful Art Deco details. The dark-colored angel statues he showed are part of that, but there’s a lot of beautiful, small architectural touches that are just beautiful. It’s not only an amazing engineering feat, it’s also a work of art, imo.
A lot of it has to do with people refusing to get rid of grass and pools as well as water demanding crops in California 🤷♂️. Here in Phoenix, AZ they literally flood their yards daily to keep them green, so much wasted water. There are also golf courses everywhere 🙄.
Thanks for sharing the excellent video views of Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. Yes, this year the water level has diminished to an unprecedented low. Hope it will be a good monsoon year later on in August.
Thanks a lot! You saved me a lot of walking. I guess it's time I visited Hoover Dam again. The first time I visited was in 1957, when I took the tour of the power plant. The last time was in 1998, when I moved to Las Vegas. I took me 40+ years between the first and second visit. If I wait that long again, I won't be around to do it!
Visited the Dam in November 1999 when the Lake was relatively full. How everything has changed -- new bridge, visitor's center, security!! Thank you for the tour -- really enjoyed it. Be safe!!
43 years ago i was in that same spot guzzling a Michelob with my friends from Nellis Air Force base..the dam level was all the way up. And my can is at the bottom
Another great travel video, Russ. From 1996-2005 I drove over Hoover Dam somewhere between 15-20 times when I was traveling in the West. Your video brings back some wonderful memories of times past for me. You shoot good video and are an awesome storyteller, Russ. Thank you for your efforts! Stay safe, my friend! Chet, Roanoke, Virginia
@Andrea Wylie isn't that the way it always works out. Blink your eyes and miss something major. I think the only hope for that reservoir is some very strict water restrictions for the entire Southwest.
Yay! Sad to see the water so low. Haven't been there in 3 years. Low then. The Dam Tour is worth it if you get the chance. Thank you Russ!!! Safe travels. Feed the fish at the Marina. Always fun!!!
I was at the Hoover Dam the end of March. It’s a very impressive place. As it turns out, my youngest son works on the dams and power lines out west. I started watching your videos because you go places he’s been. I have really enjoyed watching your videos because you leave us with a sense of being there ourselves. I thank you for that. By the way, the power lines that are tilted at the dam are also cranes for lifting equipment to fix the turbines.
" the power lines that are tilted at the dam are also cranes for lifting equipment ." THANKS so much for that info. Every time I drive by there I have wonderd why in the world those line are tilted and NOW I know!
this is the most important part of Nevada and everyone lives in this state, I prayed for more rains to fill out the lakes, it's okay, we need the flooding to save more water, Nevada is a desert, the most rain the better, lake Mead needs support from the Mississippi river, it's very important to build a pipe line that will feed the Colorado River All the way to Las Vegas, Now Vegas casinos need water at the Bellagio to do that fountain show, that show is good but the Bellagio needs to comply with federal authority,
I've wanted to explore Hoover Dam since I was 5 years old and now I'm 69. Better get out there before I'm gone. What time of day did you film? Looked like the perfect sun for photography. Thanks for this.
last time I was there was when the bridge was under construction. it's strange to see the water so low but when so much is consumed by the towns and cities, it's amazing there is any still left to be use.
The dam tour is definitely worth the price. Also, you can get spectacular views from the pedestrian bridge next to the interstate. There is a parking area up near the bridge for a short hike up to it.
moved to Tucson in 1982 with my niece and traveled to Nevada over the Dam. it is very interesting to see how different it is now. watching from Indiana
Thank you for taking us with you on your visit to the Hoover Dam. I drove over the dam several times when I lived in Vegas in the early 90’s. Memorial I love the changes that they made to the visitor center and the memorial plaza. When I left Vegas in ‘94 there was a small bathtub ring around the lake. It is unbelievable the hubris, of the National Park and the state governments the river supplies, to wait until the lake reaches such lows before they act. A new states pact should be done with the exclusion of California (the largest benefactor of Lake Mead water),as their state government just voted down any Desalination plants as the plants could harm some unknown sea animal/fish. 🇺🇸🇺🇦🇩🇪🇪🇸
My buddy works on Lake Mead , He’s a Diver and does repairs on The Dam He actually does work on Dams all over the SouthWest and is an instructor to work on Dam’s as well. He lives in Boulder City again now. We were roommates with a 3rd buddy of ours for awhile and then We stayed just over the hill into Vegas off The Wagon Wheel exits You’re still almost in BC being way out there but it’s actually about 11 miles from BC officially.
Thanks again for another great video. The last time I and my family were here was in 1984. We had a building lot at Lake Mead View Estates. We had a beautiful view of the lake back then. We were going to relocate but circumstances changed so we sold the lot. In retrospect I'm glad we did. Using Google Earth, the view of the lake has diminished due to buildings and landscaping blocking the view of a diminishing lake. Keep the great videos coming 🤠🤟
You have SO MANY beautiful ❤️ spots to visit where you live. People are happy to hire buses, I felt a bit yuk just from your views of good camera at the dam. Wow, the view straight down was making my feet tickle.
Amazing dam, and piece of history. I watched the video twice, lol, once in the big screen. Those statues were interesting. The upkeep on it must cost a mint. Nice visitors center. Ty for sharing it it with us. 🙂👍
I remember seeing huge Cat Fish over by the spill way. I went down the elevator and did that tour very interesting and informative. Thank you for the video.
I remember stopping by to see the Hoover Dam in May of 1991 on a family trip to Disneyland. The water was at the top of the water intake, then in 1996-1997 when my family lived in Mesquite for a short time we went to Overton marina when the marina was still operational.
Impressive visit and video. Water behind the dam is very, very low. I wonder in the dam’s hey day how many trillions of gallons of water passed though those turbines. Russ, your travel by foot was “too cool for school.” Thanks for taking your viewers along on your visit.
I don't recall the year, (circa-Late70's early 80's?) but I was lucky enough to be there the first time they ever (had) to open the floodgates. The sound and power of the water was both deafening and violent. Standing on the edge overlooking the rim you could feel the mist from the water spray in your face as it crashed onto the Arizona side of the Colorado River below. They had a tour to explore the Turbines encased deep within the bottom of the massive structure, requiring an elevator ride deep into the dark bowels of one of the greatest engineering feats of all time. Thanks for the memories Russ. God bless America!
