Thank you this is what I call a real review. Concise and unbiased with good advice and points to match if you purchase this screen. Thank you once again.
Have got the 75 inches non mini lcd 6 series for.a year now. Though it being a 60hz panel still easily matches performance with most high end models for a fraction of the price. My best purchasing decision ever after I returned 3 lg oleds and 1 sony z9d after having them for 3 weeks.
We also have TCL here in Slovakia, but the only MiniLED TV they offer is called X10. It is an Android OS based 65" QLED with integrated Onkyo soundbar, but it costs 2000 euro. It does support both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ however.
TCL definitely need to work on their design but performance sounds amazing for the money. Man Hisense and TCL need to bring their big hitters to the UK in 2021.
I dont know man it is a Tv. For me and the most people the picture quality is 10 times more important than the design. I would take the Panasonic hz 2000 over every other Tv, even though it is ugly.
@@geiers6013 Hisense did an incredible job with the H9G design and that's still a flagship-killer. I agree though performance first, but it doesn't grab me.

Thanks a bunch for going to the trouble and expense of importing this TV. The TCL 6 Series is on my very short list of "gaming aware" televisions. And while the LG CX, and the Sony X900H, have gotten a decent amount of detailed "How's it work for gaming?" coverage, the TCL so far really hasn't. I would love to see you do a deep dive on this TCL, looking specifically at its ability to play nicely with the new consoles and HDMI 2.1 graphics cards. (But mostly the consoles.) In short, can the TCL display Dirt 5 at 1440p, with 10-bit HDR, at 120Hz, with VRR, on the Xbox Series X? If not, how close can it get? (I'm pretty sure chroma subsampling will be required, but I'm not terribly confident that the game, console, and TV have been designed to allow this.)
I’m really glad you addressed the global brightness setting of TCL sets, and the issue it presents when you switch from SDR, to HDR. I had a TCL r625 before getting an LG CX...that issue used to bug the hell out of me. Constantly switching the brightness is pretty inconvenient. At least it was very easy to switch the brightness levels, thanks to the snappy OS, and quick access menu. Hopefully they address it in the future tho. Like you said tho, it could be a limitation of Roku..? I did mess around with setting the global brightness level to brighter for SDR, but turn down the backlight to a suitable level for SDR. That way I could just leave it at brighter, so when I switched to HDR, it would be at the correct luminance level. I played with that a few times, but it was still too bright if I remember correctly.. I also feel like TCL took a few step backwards on the r635, compared to the r625. The r635 has pretty bad black uniformity..at least on the ones I’ve seen, and from you video demonstrations. The corners of the screen also like to present a lot of clouding and hazing. Not to mention, there is a decent bit of blooming on small highlights. I just feel like the r625s local dimming algorithm was a lot more optimized...it also didn’t result in nearly as much crushing of shadow detail or “black crush”. It also had much better black uniformity. That being said, they definitely made improvements in some key areas. Mainly screen uniformity or lack of DSE’s...and also finally introducing a native 120Hz panel on the 6 series line. TCL is still struggling with their motion and pixel response tho. There was a decent amount of pixel trailing, or black smearing on my r625 too. More so than the r635. The MCFI algorithm was very disappointing to me also. Way too many artifacts...it’s probably improved on the r635, thanks to the native 120Hz panel. I truly do think TCL brings great price to value ratio...they have so much potential if they just button up a few issues, and continue to improve. I guess you really can’t expect perfection tho, especially for the price they’re selling these sets for. That’s the huge selling point for many people...like I said...great price to value ratio.
@@chrisw341 Lol that’s how I always am...and no I didn’t use voice text. I’m just a pretty fast texted/typer. I always leave long comments for some reason. I guess it’s bc I have a serious love/passion for display tech. Hell, half the time ik nobody’s even listening anyways 🤣 It’s whatever tho.
@@Keivz I personally like a brighter image too than the standard of 100-120 nits for SDR. I like around 200 nits. That’s just me tho. I know it’s not technically “accurate”... We all have personal preference. Hell, many people like Vivid modes, cool color temps, with MCFI turned up to max, with artifacts all over the place lol. NOT ME! 🤢 But this is an issue with many people regarding TCL TVs with the Roku OS....(the global brightness control)....It is a problem for anyone valuing accuracy, especially once calibrated to correct luminance levels. My r625 looked very washed out set to Brighter for SDR, in movie mode (backlight at 60). I have a dark room, so I also didn’t need all that brightness...it definitely was lacking contrast, and suffered from colors being washed out/diluted from the high backlight setting. The same happens on the r635...not to mention it makes blooming/clouding/haloing more noticeable. I HAVE TO use bias lighting on FALD QLEDs...that’s not the case with OLED tho. Very happy with OLEDs PQ, and the lack of distractions in a dark room. My eyes were just always drawn to those distractions. Once seen, you can’t un-seen. Bias lighting did help a lot tho. But hey, if you like the brightest backlight setting for SDR...great! It’s always nice to be happy with the PQ of your TV 😀
Hi, I have been following you since the Sony 900e days. I took your advice and got the Sony X900h, did I make a mistake by not going for the TCL 635 (65 inches for both)?
Great to finally see your take on the R635. I am considering the 55" version in Canada. Do you think your view will change much for the 55 version --- also any comparison to the Hisense H9G which is always out of stock... but is that a better pick if i can find one. Cheers
I love my TCLs. I have a 2018 55r615 and a 2019 65 r625. Both give my Sony X900F75 a run for it's money in picture quality. I opted for the r625 over the r635 as it is rated higher for HDR performance over this 2020 model.
This a great time for best TV under $1000 vids thanks! Next can you do an in depth look at Dobly Atmos through eArc xbox/pc/ps to hdmi 2.1 tv 120hz out to HDMI 2.0 earc reciever? I have audio lag when I set Atmos. My PC with same setup seems better than xbox x s. Is the issue in Dolby access app, reciever side? TV side? Thanks!
So, let me make sure I'm right. The 55, and 65 inch 6 series have 120hz functionality? If so, this would be perfect for a budget buyer who wants 120hz but isn't willing to spend 1000+$ since the 55 is only 650$
@@TAD-9 No idea. Same thing with Samsung and their mobile devices - NA gets the Snapdragon offering whereas the EU gets their Exynos with traditionally worse thermal performance and battery life impact. I bought the TCL 65r635 after watching your amazing review. I just received my unit today, and I’m noticing significant vertical color banding issues on many streaming apps and my PlayStation. Not just on like say the HBO max/Netflix start up screens, but while watching movies. Is this a known issue or did I receive a bad panel?
I have this display in 75in. Absolutely amazing for the money. Your review display absolutely won the panel lottery for 65in size. Excellent review and insight in to the R635 and is the reasons why I went with it over Vizi & ,Hisense. Even considered the x900h but I wanted 75in and I could not justify the addtl price. If you are in market for 65in only the crazy sale price on x900h (in US market) would lead anyone else to go with anything other than TCL R635, unless you are going all the way to LG CX. Keep up the great content!
I have had this TV a little over two years now. The local dimming is definitely not good, blooming is very noticeable. Uniformity of panel is not great, some areas have gray spots. It can support 120hz at 1440p, but when I use my Series X and change the console settings to support 120hz at 1440p, and the TV goes absolutely nuts (freezes, jitters, lines across the screen). So possible problems with HDMI ports or display. And viewing angles are not great either. I will be getting the LG C2 OLED when it drops in price in November. Just hate having to go from Roku to WebOS, because Roku is easy and simple to use and the home page and settings are easier to navigate.
It's interesting that the local dimming of this model has been reviewed as being unimpressive or bad in all the 55" reviews. This is the only other 65" review I've found besides Digital Trends review who also proclaims it's the best bang for the buck. DT also unboxed and previewed a 55" version and had many complaints but then fully reviewed the 65" and said it was a completely different story.
Yea. I almost got the 75" but the user reviews were to worrisome. Bought the 65" 2 months ago and it's been great. Bloom is incredibly unnoticeable most of the time for me.
Yet another excellent budget TV us Europeans won't get from TCL. Guess we're still stuck buying Direct Backlit Samsung, LG/Phillips TV's if we're too broke to spend 1500€
Be very careful not to buy the 55in version of this because the local dimming zones are a lot lower and the algorithm is really bad at controlling them making text and logos have a ton of blooming, especially in game mode. So go for the 65 inch or skip it if you are viewing in dark room environments.
I have the 55” using as my main gaming and productivity monitor. No complaints at all for $699. Minor blooming here and there on certain icons, but nothing to stop it from being an amazing value. Outstanding performance when paired with a Radeon Vega 56 for 1440p 120Hz. Not near OLED performance of course for movies, but no complaints at all overall with the 55”. 1/2 the price of an LG CX.
TCL is killing it, I love this brand and I love their Roku implementation. Unlike other "smart" tv's, im still getting regular updates/support from TCL/Roku on my 2018 model. In fact they just updated the TV settings menu, so that tells me they continue to optimize TV's from 2018 and possibly later models!

I took a risk on a cheap Chinese television for my bedroom, similar to the TCL brand, except it was the Hisense u7qf. I returned it after a few weeks, as it had several issues. I really wanted to like that television too. I just wish brands like TCL or Hisense would bring their A-game to the European market, and not the second rate stuff. I’ll check back in a few years to see if they get it together. In the meantime I’m considering buying another LG CX, because at least you can be assured of it’s quality.
I've had a hisense for 6 yrs now. A tcl for 5 without issue. Tcl and hisense aren't going to have the qc a samsung has though. When you get further down their product line it's a real gamble. I'd never go less then tcl 5 or hisense 8 series.
@@frankrobbins8508 Samsung has had problems too. I bought a $2500 1080p Samsung back in ‘07 and had blown caps a year and a half later. It’s really unacceptable for companies to use garbage parts on expensive TVs to save a couple of bucks at most per unit if it’s even that much.
Only HDMI 2.0b on a 4K TV with a 120hz panel? Am I understanding this wrong? You wouldn't be able to run 4K 120hz with an HDMI 2.0b port. If it had supported 4K @ 120hz and HDMI 2.1 I would buy this TV immediately, it checks every box I've been looking for except those.

I tried the app out on my new 6 series and wasn’t that impressed. But after doing it a few times I think it can improve the grey scale on ur tv. Maybe even let it break in a little bit first.
I'd save your money and get this TCL if you don't care to tell people you own a TCL. A lot of people look down on TCL. I've had my 65R635 for 2 months now and have had no regrets. HDR and DV is outstanding.

I’m basically just excited to see any new display tech move forward. I’ve got an X900E and it’s weird that nothing outside of OLED delivers a leap forward in picture quality. Fingers crossed 2021 has some nice surprises in store.
What a coincidence. I just got my tcl r635 65 inch today the same time this rwview came out. Picture quality is great and brightness is good enough. Sadly I had black spots on the screen that looked like dim spots where the mini leds died and am in the process of doing a replacement.
No. You are forced to use an app on your phone for adjustment of fine settings needed for proper calibration. Standard settings you adjust on the tv. There’s also a calibration app that will do the calibrating for you-though supposedly it doesn’t work all that well compared with an official calibration.
You don't technically have to be connected to the internet but your phone and TV have to be on the same wifi network. It will still work if there is no internet connection available.
Jesus folks, it's just the Roku app. All Roku TVs have them, they also let you use your phone as a remote. You just need to be on the same Wifi, no internet needed.
@HDTVTest are their any certified fiber optic HDMI 2.1 cables that should work with the new NVIDIA 3000 series graphics cards? I need a cable that supports 4k 120 and is about 15 metres long it seems impossible to find any definitive information on this and the best channel I've seen regarding it is yours. Thank you so much
I just set up a “55 and agree with everything stated. I have noticed some weird issues w motion when watching hdr cartoons off Netflix or Disney plus. Weird “halo” effects around dark out lines, jittery movement when panning and some clipping. Is this common with that content or is a setting in the tv? The fam and I watched the Mando last night and were pretty amazed w the picture.
a tv also includes sound. Why isn't the sound quality reviewed? My old tv includes a subwoofer, so I only use the sound bar when watching movies. it would be nice to know if a tv sounds like a phone, only good for news, or acceptable for normal viewing.
I have 6 series from 2018 and the new from 2020 side by side and the old one looks better , colors pop more , images look sharper and looks more fluid . Im about to return it =(
The tlc wasn't a europe tv either and he was able to ship and review it. So I'm sure it can be done with the h9g. I really would love his opinion on it
I just installed a 55" R635 for a customer last week. When he says the off-axis viewing isn't great... that's an understatement. When you move just 15° off center, you will start to get washout. At 30° off center, it looks bad. So only get this TV if you or maybe 1-2 other people are going to be sitting in front of it. Do not buy this TV if you have a room where people will be sitting 'around the room'.
Me personally, if I buy a TV, I could care less if the picture is a tad bit dimmer & not quite perfect for anyone coming over to visit who sits off center of the TV. I'm not buying the TV for what others think of it or so they can enjoy it. I'm buying it for me & my family & so we can enjoy it. Besides, it's a 55"-75" TV, ppl shouldn't be sitting that close to it that the off center viewing would be so drastic anyhow.
Which roku app was it that was used on this tv? When I look in the app store I find many of them and the ones that I downloaded won't allow access into the settings of the tv and don't have an alternate settings menu to adjust the tv settings...
This TV has two game modes, *gaming HDR is THX GAME MODE , *Vibrant HDR and must enable game mode under the settings Almost no difference in input lag but more colorful in this mode compared to THC game mode, I play both PS5 and Xbox series X
The only thing I can say is that the R635 is 4K 60Hz and HDMI 2.0 only. No 4K 120Hz. No built-in ATSC 3.0 tuner. The X900H checks both of those boxes. The X900H 65” was on sale for $999 and the 75” was $1599 on Black Friday, so the 65” (when on sale) enters that sub-$1000 group. Response time and blacks on the X900H is phenomenal. Less local dimming zones on the X900H vs the R635, but Sony does an amazing job of using them. Android TV on the X900H is not nearly as good as Roku TV on TCL, so TCL wins that one. The TCL 6 series is also QLED vs standard LED. Both are really great displays in their own right, but if you want to future proof yourself a bit more with HDMI 2.1 (after firmware upgrade - ports 3 and 4 have the full 48 Gb/s HDMI 2.1 enable) and if can live with fewer dimming zones and standard backlighting in exchange for those additional features, go with the X900H. If those features don’t matter to you, look for the best price you can get. Also consider the Samsung Q80T as a non-OLED option if you want to consider one of these sets. I went with the X900H myself.
@@danbashur Thank you for the in-depth response, I really appreciate it! And I ended up going with the X900H but I'm wondering if I should have gotten the TCL and a high end sound system ( coming from the savings). Overall I am very happy with the tv.
My grandmother has got this TV in a 55 and I found instead of jumping between brightness is I just set it on normal and that seems to work pretty decently both ways with a little bit of internal picture setting adjustments
The Hisense H9G is better for SDR and HDR viewing, TCL wins with gaming features. Can you please review the H9G and compare them!!!!!!! Thanks in advance 😇
I had the 2018 version of this tv for a year now. Still looks and works good but now with 120hz gaming starting to be a thing I'm itching to upgrade just for that but I can't pull the trigger 😭
120hz 4k isn't really a thing yet. Some light weight games can do it, sure. But none of the really pretty games can be run at 4k 120hz with high render settings. If you are running an Nvidia RTX GPU on an HTPC then i guess DLSS 2.0 will allow you to run 4k 120hz, but keep in mind, DLSS 2.0 is not native 4k, it is a supersampled 1440p image. It's more blurry than actual 4k and occasionally has artifacts. I'd say it'll be another 2 GPU generations (roughly 4 years) before native 4k 120hz is really feasible in the titles that would benefit most from it. And of course, despite being advertised as 4k 120hz capable, consoles often still have to cap 4k games at high settings to 30fps. Though these days they do also usually offer a lower quality setting at a higher framerate.
@@Erowens98 Yeah but 1080p and 1440p @120FPS will definitely be viable on next gen consoles. I'd much rather play at 1080p 120 than 4k 60 for multiplayer shooters.
Best value for televisions in 2020. Some issues: flickering every 20 seconds to a minute with VRR above 70 fps at 1440p and 1080p, 120 Hz (at least with a 30 series card). And there’s a horizontal line 3-4 pixels tall at the very top of the screen with 1440p at 120 hz that some people are bothered by. I’m ok with 60 hz so neither of these issues bother me and I still consider the tv to be fabulous

Not the best TV for PS5. Since PS5 doesn't support 1440p, all games running at 120fps will downscale to 1080p on the TCL. The TCL R635 is good for the money, but, the 65" Sony X900H is also $900 when on sale, and is overall superior. Of course the best TV for PS5 is the LG CX if you like OLED, and the Samsung Q90T if you like QLED.

Damn .... that’s a long comment !!!!!
Did u voice text !!
🤣🤣🤣
@@chrisw341 Lol that’s how I always am...and no I didn’t use voice text. I’m just a pretty fast texted/typer. I always leave long comments for some reason. I guess it’s bc I have a serious love/passion for display tech. Hell, half the time ik nobody’s even listening anyways 🤣 It’s whatever tho.
I personally love a bright image, even in sdr, so I just leave it on brighter myself.
NOT ME! 🤢
But this is an issue with many people regarding TCL TVs with the Roku OS....(the global brightness control)....It is a problem for anyone valuing accuracy, especially once calibrated to correct luminance levels.
Best reviewer on the internet.
Hi, I have been following you since the Sony 900e days. I took your advice and got the Sony X900h, did I make a mistake by not going for the TCL 635 (65 inches for both)?
No.
Great to finally see your take on the R635. I am considering the 55" version in Canada. Do you think your view will change much for the 55 version --- also any comparison to the Hisense H9G which is always out of stock... but is that a better pick if i can find one. Cheers
We get tcl here in NZ but only budget models. Wish we could get the US models and Vizio Quantum P series
its worse in india

I love my TCLs. I have a 2018 55r615 and a 2019 65 r625. Both give my Sony X900F75 a run for it's money in picture quality. I opted for the r625 over the r635 as it is rated higher for HDR performance over this 2020 model.
Thank you for your informed opinion. Been stuck between getting this or the H9G for a month.
I was too but i have decided on this since it handles motion better

I have audio lag when I set Atmos. My PC with same setup seems better than xbox x s. Is the issue in Dolby access app, reciever side? TV side? Thanks!
So, let me make sure I'm right. The 55, and 65 inch 6 series have 120hz functionality? If so, this would be perfect for a budget buyer who wants 120hz but isn't willing to spend 1000+$ since the 55 is only 650$
Be aware of the rest of the story- it *does* offer 120Hz, but only in 1440p. In 4K it's only 60Hz.
So the big breakthrough with mini LED for the R635 is good uniformity compared to other TCL televisions?
It sure doesn’t improve dimming performance.
Tcl from 2018 6 series looks better i have both side by side
Considering you had to pay for a crate's worth of shipping I wonder if it would have been more efficient to buy 5 of them and sell them other 4.
To be honest, their Europe offering should match their USA offering. The way they segregate their products and markets is mind boggling
Why is TCL doing this? If they started to offer the same lineup as they have in the USA I might consider them.
@@TAD-9 No idea. Same thing with Samsung and their mobile devices - NA gets the Snapdragon offering whereas the EU gets their Exynos with traditionally worse thermal performance and battery life impact. I'm not clear about these strategies but oh well, none of them will see my money until they level the playfield.
Wait until you hear about oil lmao
Great review, thanks. What about the energy rating?
I bought the TCL 65r635 after watching your amazing review. I just received my unit today, and I’m noticing significant vertical color banding issues on many streaming apps and my PlayStation. Not just on like say the HBO max/Netflix start up screens, but while watching movies. Is this a known issue or did I receive a bad panel?
Sounds like a bad panel, When I purchased r625 model we had to make an immediate exchange @bestbuy.
The blooming issue how handles it in this size? Thsnk you!
Supposedly if you have a PS5 or Xbox series X this is a must-have
How was this year’s model?
@HDTVTest can you please provide the best settings for this TV? 📺
I’m ordering mine when it’s back in stock!
Vinnie doesn't do TV settings as his job is a calibratior.
Baz Man well not right now, and his video list partially disagree with your assertion.
It would be interesting how the 75 blooming deals
I have my CX but i still feel the need to know what's up with other TV's.
I have a 48CX for color grading and gaming. I have the TCL 2020 6 series 75" for watching movies and other content. It's the perfect setup.
This tv gets far brighter than an oled.
@@Keivz Yes! So bright I have to close my eyes or look away on all while scenes.
Welcome to the AV rabbitithole. I'm 4 years in
@@Keivz my room is super dark so brightness isn't an issue. I bought an OLED laptop and once I saw how much better OLED is, I bought a 65" CX.
Be very careful not to buy the 55in version of this because the local dimming zones are a lot lower and the algorithm is really bad at controlling them making text and logos have a ton of blooming, especially in game mode. So go for the 65 inch or skip it if you are viewing in dark room environments.
The 65 inch has more zones to “maintain“ the same coverage area. If the dimming performance is worse it’s because of the algorithm.
Did they ever update the local dimming algorithm in software later?
Hey guys ... so how much would it cost overall for the TV to be shipped in the UK, including its list price ?
TCL is killing it, I love this brand and I love their Roku implementation. Unlike other "smart" tv's, im still getting regular updates/support from TCL/Roku on my 2018 model. In fact they just updated the TV settings menu, so that tells me they continue to optimize TV's from 2018 and possibly later models!
I know 2018 LG, Samsung and Sony smart televisions are still getting updates so what brand are you referring to?
@@johnb4905 Any brand, there is not smart TV on the market that gets more support than Roku as Roku manages its own proprietary software, not TCL. Unlike other "smart" tv's, support will eventually cease as big players purposely do this to push new panels.

Maybe it has to do with tariffs?
I've had a hisense for 6 yrs now. A tcl for 5 without issue. Tcl and hisense aren't going to have the qc a samsung has though. When you get further down their product line it's a real gamble.
I'd never go less then tcl 5 or hisense 8 series.
@@frankrobbins8508 Samsung has had problems too. I bought a $2500 1080p Samsung back in ‘07 and had blown caps a year and a half later. It was so common that they really should’ve done a recall but didn’t.
I got them to fix it for free after bothering them for a couple of weeks but it really put me off the brand.
Have the 75" sitting in the box in my living room. Do you recommend using the app based calibration? I heard it could do that (btw bought on sale for 1699 cdn which is about 1325 usd)
I tried the app out on my new 6 series and wasn’t that impressed. But after doing it a few times I think it can improve the grey scale on ur tv. Maybe even let it break in a little bit first.
Is it better to buy this one or invest(double the price) in CX 65 LG Oled ?
Asking real question here
I'd save your money and get this TCL if you don't care to tell people you own a TCL. A lot of people look down on TCL. I've had my 65R635 for 2 months now and have had no regrets. HDR and DV is outstanding.

where can you buy this for under $1000? I've only seen it for $1200
Forcing you to connect the tv to internet to adjust settings? Am I getting this right?
You forgot the letter C.
No. You are forced to use an app on your phone for adjustment of fine settings needed for proper calibration. Standard settings you adjust on the tv. There’s also a calibration app that will do the calibrating for you-though supposedly it doesn’t work all that well compared with an official calibration.
@@Keivz So no but actually yes.

Why did you choose this over the h9g for best value?
VRR and ALLM.
TCL C815 claiming that they can display 120hz 4k using HMDI 2.0? Is that possible? I tried it with xbox series x (I get 1080 with 120hz).

At first glance I read Micro LED instead of Mini LED... I came for a second there. LOL!
Yes, we did mention at 7:26 in this video that the viewing angles are very narrow even by VA LCD standards.
That's one remote i wouldn't mind if the dog chewed up.
Which roku app was it that was used on this tv?
When I look in the app store I find many of them and the ones that I downloaded won't allow access into the settings of the tv and don't have an alternate settings menu to adjust the tv settings...
It’s the Roku - official remote control. The one with over 1 million downloads
For my Xbox Series X can I use the hdmi 2.1 cable that came with it or do I need to use a hdmi 2.0?
You can use the Xbox Series X HDMI cable without any problem.
Your HDMI 2.1 cable will work fine, but the TV will only support up to 1440p @ 120hz, even though the cable supports more.
Starting to seriously consider this one.
This TV has two game modes, *gaming HDR is THX GAME MODE ,
*Vibrant HDR and must enable game mode under the settings
Almost no difference in input lag but more colorful in this mode compared to THC game mode, I play both PS5 and Xbox series X
What's your opinion comparing this tv with the X900H?

What will the output be on a PS5 1080/120
I had the 2018 version of this tv for a year now. Still looks and works good but now with 120hz gaming starting to be a thing I'm itching to upgrade just for that but I can't pull the trigger 😭
The R617? Thats what I have and its still amazing, working flawlessly for my needs.
