Playing on the Japanese version of SMB Deluxe is even funnier with context that in Japan the game didn't get a physical release but rather was a Nintendo Power flash cartridge exclusive so it only exists as a digital release
How sure are you of that? A lot of games that were initially released on NP kiosks would get physical releases (typically a SFC/GB Memory cassette with the game preloaded and manual/stickers distinguishing it from a regular flash cart). While I've seen a few Super Famicom games released this way, the only GB game I could say for certain got that treatment was Wario Land which got both standard and NP-preloaded releases however, a disproportionate number of boxed GB Memory Cassettes I found browsing eBay had Super Mario Bros. Deluxe and F-1 World Grand Prix without anything to distinguish them as pre-loaded. SMBD could be seen as gamers installing a popular brand-name game from a kiosk but the number of F-1 WGP carts seems too frequent to dismiss as coincidence.
@TheBlackSeraph the Japanese game only exists within those cartridges and as far as I can tell, Super Mario Bros. I found a run involving a cartridge swap from SMB3 to SMB1 which allows starting in World N-1, which then enables ACE upon beating bowser with fireballs in N-4, so yes
My personal theory is that it's using the stop 'n swop glitch with NES Tennis, which allows you to start on any world you want (including glitched ones) Retro Game Mechanics Explained has a good video on that glitch. Though if ace is possible in SMB, then he's probably talking about that.
One other difference that I don't think you mentioned is that the end-of-level staircases only go 7 blocks high in the GBC version, while they go 8 tiles high in the original game (and that's also why the flagpoles are 1 tile closer in the GBC version). As for how 8-3 is beatable faster in the original game, perhaps in the GBC version, they lengthened the level slightly somewhere. Hmm... ...Okay, I looked up maps of both the original and GBC versions of 8-3 online, and when I carefully compared them, it appears they lengthened the stretch of land where the final four Hammer Bros. are located by a few tiles. So, that's why the GBC version ends up being slower than expected.
The rabbit hole of speedrunning is insane beyond description. I really can't fathom how all of this information gets gathered over the years and thousands of attempts at the game, and this is just *one very simple game.* Thank you for making it mostly digestible.

I didn’t know it was a different version u scared me so bad
Oh wow. This video unlocked a hidden memory and reminded me I had this version if the game when I i was suuuuuper young
This version of SMB is so janky but it'll always be my favourite. It has a calendar after all :)
I love how all the music in this Mario video is from Donkey Kong. lol
i actually commented "when will 4:51 be possible" on the video covering the PAL version
Can't believe it's actually happening
Really hyped for the ACE video, hope it comes out sooner or later
Maybe the real framerules were the fireworks we avoided along the way
i love how my first thought was "i'm sure this has no frame rules" and was really disappointed i might be wrong until 10 mins in xD
You can't just leave a cliff hanger like that!!!
The speedrunning community is nuts. Imagine nailing a world record and having someone come out and be like "hey here are a few more things to grind for another year to shave a second" and your reactions probably "hey thanks!". :D
Kinda funny how this version of the game is so different from the original, yet the world record was less than a second off from the WR in that OG game.
All these references to 21 make me think the SMB developers couldn't wait until they were old enough to drink.
"a frame perfect jump is a frame perfect jump, you cant say its only a half"
this was the first time in my life i saw a smb speedrunner have a SOB in his timer
These videos are like an infinite rabbit hole. Each one ends with "but there's a way to beat SMB1 even faster, find out how in my next video." There has to be an end to this... right?
nope. never. this will go until the end of the universe. and probably after that, too
Someone other than Niftsky having a Super Mario Bros world record is the real surprising part of this.
this version of smb is very claustrophobic feeling even with the scroll
