Orb is such a fantastic work of fiction. We often take for granted all the fundamental knowledge we aquired through centuries of scientific research like "Well, of course Earth is spherical, DUH." without consediration what it took to get here. But proving hailocentrism without ability to physically go there and see it, is infinitely more challenging that studying curvature of the Earth.
Not only that, but you are also fighting against the established norms. The work to be had was definitely insane but the mental fortitude to go against "the will of God" must've been something dude.
I watched this anime blind after seeing some buzz around it and found it very impressive. It is a theme certainly for the more mature audience I don't know much about the historical accounts but knowing how religion is with its own history, it is, to put it bluntly, nice to see this interpretation. Cosmology was used to give rationality to faith, or rather, scientific research passed through a religious filter to be declared legitimate, otherwise they would be heresies.
Our galaxy will colide with Andromeda at some point. But that will take billions of years. Maybe they thought the same about the stars coliding with Earth.
