The fallout from Arkansas' "right to mine" bitcoin law

  • The peace and quiet of rural Bono, Arkansas, has been shattered by a loud and incessant mechanical buzzing sound created by a bitcoin mine. What exactly is a "bitcoin mine," and how does it work? Who owns them? And what can the residents of Bono do about them? Correspondent David Pogue investigates this very loud problem.
[A previous version of this report incorrectly stated that "at least 50 bitcoin mining plants are planned in Arkansas." In fact, as of April 14, 2024, when this story originally aired, at least 50 counties in Arkansas had passed ordinances to restrict the sound level emitted by bitcoin mines.]

When we have grid shortages of electricity in Texas, they pay these Bitcoin miners billions of dollars *not* to operate. They locate these mines where taxes and electricity are the very cheapest - which is usually a drain on a rural electric co-op. ⚡😲⚡

Bitcoin is not a currency. The Satoshi paper claimed it would be, but it failed to deliver on that claim in spectacular fashion. And it turns out that blockchain technology is a poor system for ever running a currency use case. At best it’s digital speculation or a form of price-variable bearer bond. Excellent for laundering money and offshoring without government oversight…for people who like that sort of thing.

    • @jamesburge1983

Say what? You need to do a little more research. Check out Lightening, which is a layer 2 bitcoin product on the blockchain. It’s fast, moves between many currencies and has no middle man charging outrageous fees. Bitcoin is the future. These rude and disgraceful miners are not. Eventually I imagine mining rigs in people’s basements, with the excess heat used to power homes inexpensively. That process has already begun in offices and industrial buildings.

    • @leonardojimenez2415
      @leonardojimenez2415 15 дней назад

How has it failed to deliver? Let me guess, you believe in fiat? You must love government issued money lol. Fun fact the US dollar is also used to launder money. Look at where your tax money is being spent?… to funds mass massacres and genocides in other countries while you get to sit back laugh about it huh? Wake up and be open to new technologies. The satoshi white paper created a currency to survive on when governments no longer cares about you… it was never intended to be secret. It’s a public ledger where everyone get a copy of the same transaction…

We had to take an exam in Psych Medicine, with Boom Boxes blasting 50’s Rock and Roll, another spirting various numbers in a monotone voice, another was playing 1944 WWII news from the front, and another was Orchestral Movements from Bach and Beethoven. The intercom listed all our names in a repeating roll call, where when our specific name was called, we had to turn our test over, stand for 5 seconds during red light, until a light turned green, and then we had to sit down and continue( instant failure if you missed roll call stand). Students who missed their name being berated and escorted from the exam in tears, with hands cupping their ears, while they yelled at us to keep our eyes on our exams, and flashed the lights on and off above us.
There was Dosage Calculations based on weight, and the numbers drove students mad😂
They didn’t grade or count the 50 question test, it was an empathetic lesson we got an A for completing.
I, with severe ADHD, had no trouble completing the test😂. My brain acts that way all the time, but I did develop a burned in memory from that test.

Why does CCP need to do bitcoin mining in US when they could do it easily in China? Super computer can increase efficiency for online hacking and spying, especially with added benefit of proximity. Why did American lawmakers allow this on American soil? Looks like another security risk.

Because bitcoin mining is illegal in China. So they do it in the US... and send the profits to China...

Actually, Bono is CORRECTLY labeled on the map! It turns out there are TWO "Bono, Arkansas" towns. The one we visited is an unincorporated municipality near Damascus. I promise--it's correct!

Bitcoin mining also uses an enormous amount of water to keep the operation cool. Imagine the impact in places where water resources are stretched to the limit. Not a good thing. This is a highly wasteful use of limited resources.

There are so many parts missing to the story. Neither a business wants to be daily involved with citizen/neighbor. and the citizen does not want to be involved with the business..
The fan noise makes no sense with respect to miners. That noise in video was totally something not mining related.

So people believe that there is global warming but their perfectly fine with building and using unimaginable levels of electricity to run these Bitcoin mines. I guess greed is king.

Credit card companies use more power lol. Do some research yourself and not just listen to what NPR tells you to think.
