I am an INTJ and have struggled to hold down a job in the corporate world because I simply don’t fit in. I often create solutions that get stolen by others and I get no credit, and in return I constantly hear that I come across as cold and arrogant when most of the time I sit quietly at my desk and don’t get involved with the office gossipers, office politics etc, and I am actually a very friendly, genuine person. Yes it’s true, we are very good at spotting inefficiencies, and I have had a habit of pointing many out at different companies, problem with that is that you make enemies that way, and they can work to get you out of the job. I don’t think INTJs are good fits for the corporate world. I think I will be a better entrepreneur. I don’t fit in with most offices.

I agree with a lot of what your saying except for the arrogant comment. Our confidence is often misunderstood as arrogance. In my experience as an INTJ female when confronted with a person mistaking me as arrogant, it's often a reflection of them trying to appease their damaged ego because they feel insecure. Not saying that INTJ can't be arrogant, but make sure you are being objective in your assessment and not just caught in your feelings because of insecurities. We can also be team players if the situation requires it, however it must be with a group that takes things seriously and actually contributes productively. Nothing worse than working on a team with slackers.

    • @TheShamuraja

Also if a woman feels confident or speaks assertively in a male way, it might be perceived as cold, too mich straight to the point and too objective.
I think in general women are supposed to have a different language, more of a social, inviting, reassuring or insecure language to be perceived as a non threat.
Well, it doesn't hurt to take some of those traits on, so as not to cause too many irritations. Or listen more and give space for the other.
If you are too competent and not kind of acting cute, it causes misunderstandings, I believe.

@@TheShamuraja You're dead on with your assessment. I'm in the hot seat at work now because my manager thinks I'm too direct, "condescending," and cold. I've had a number of meetings about my communication over the last six months and it's all changed since I started pretending to be nice, adding greetings & pleasantries, and started wearing cosmetics. The double standard & expectation is that females should act & speak a certain way in the office simply to appease the potential threats we may pose to other females. It's beyond irritating & irrational. I love being an INTJ, but I hate that society refuses to meet us halfway on anything, especially on communication.

I am a software Solution Architect (INTJ-A) here. I am 38, my MBTI friends often mix me up with an ENTJ as I think I am pretty mature for an INTJ, I am pretty well rounded, confident. That said, I have some 'quirks' that are black and white, non negotiable. If you have a crap work ethic, sloped shoulders or an ego at work, I will judge them by that and its hard to come back from that judgement. Egos, they're like a red rag to a bull for me, I will take them down quick if they are negatively impacting the group.
Noticed patterns in data, typos, errors jump out at me, I think people are often surprised by how quick I notice problems. A lot of my work is now strategy and I am much more senior. This is more for younger INTJs, my younger years in technology, I was (still am) very confident, but I approached everything with a hunger to learn, with a respect for those teaching me. I made the tea/coffee in the office, I worked closely with who was best on the software, so my start in my career was a very humble approach. I was also lucky enough to meet a much older man in my field who soon became a Mentor. Look for a mentor, difficult thing about mentors is they don't walk around with a badge on them saying "Mentor". The 'Mentors' that do, are often not capable of mentoring, they just like the title on their lInkedIn profile...
Now I am in to the experienced years of my career, I find my patience is pretty low for people bull shitting, getting political. I sit under the radar on all politics in the business, but I am pretty black and white, direct with my comments on things I disagree with. I am very vocal in work and will call things out on the spot. I do struggle with authority, more so when it is misguided or lacking the experience it needs for that title.
I struggled with my approach for a long time, not so much in the beginning when I was learning my craft, but the last 5-7 years as I knew I was wearing a mask to work. My advice would be, to not adopt a mask once you know your craft. Be you. Sometimes its an asset to show your teeth, especially in business. Work alone, be quirky, call out issues head on, I often was concerned whether this was disruptive but when it comes down to the crunch, your superiors will have you down as a no-nonsense, completer finisher who can get stuff done, on time and think logically instead of emotionally.
Fight procrastination, do not take on TOO much work, learn to say 'No', build breaks in to your day but not to youtube and google, to walk outside and follow your gut on your intuition - it is your strongest skill, do not take it for granted, the rest of them do not have this skill we have!

I think you really missed the value of an INTJ. You speak as if an INTJ is an aloof dreamer with his head in the clouds. I disagree with this because, an intj has a drive to bring things to a practical fruition. The only way to do this, is to be able to work with people and communicate with them in a way where you can get your point across and everyone is on the same page. Yes we are big picture thinkers, and we do overlook details from time to time. However, I don't think missing some punctuation in a company email is totally going to forfeit the value of the idea. I think what you have described for the most part is an unhealthy or underdeveloped intj. An intj who is healthy knows his weaknesses and knows they need to be worked on because self-improvement and self-discovery is always an ever present idea in our minds. We not only look to make companies and systems more efficient but also ourselves as well. Another thing I have noticed, is you grossly overlooked how open-minded an intj really is. You spoke about being very independent. That is true, however if a task requires more than just a single person and or needs others to get it done then we will be open-minded enough to involve other people to accomplish the goal. Lastly, when it comes to authority, we can be a little bit obstinate. The reason for this is, intjs are masters of the skills that they have acquired. We often ask ourselves, how can one lead on a particular subject or circumstance when they don't have the knowledge to do so. It's not about the person, it's about intellect. Until next time.

You know, INTJS don't *always* want to be leaders. Because they are efficient -- and they have to pay the bills, an activity separate from their self esteem -- they want to maximize the time they spend with the least amount of effort, especially at "work" which (in a capitalist society) might not really jive with their vision. This is *why* they make great leaders, but they are many times reluctant leaders. This clip was largely perjorative, I felt, and not well thought-out. It's as if your basic premise for a personality type is their response in a social environment and therein, does their value lie (or not). As an INTJ, I say 'bullshit' and you don't get it. Call me stubborn.

Seconded. I’m an INTJ woman and the overwhelming majority of the tropes here seem to be spun in a negative light. The one about competence being “as smart as the individual INTJ” is nonsense as is claiming that making a single mistake means the INTJ will completely write someone off as inferior and incompetent.

Not fully true in some points - as INTJ I am often criticized because I would pay too much attention to detail. It's an urban myth that INTJs can't bear with details and administrative tasks - it is maybe not what we desire, but we manage to cope with it and accommodate. What is true on the other hand - and I believe that this is the correct way how the saying about disregard of detail was meant originally - I don't need or want to dig in too deep to get a task done. The basic framework is often sufficient for me to predict an outcome or a solution. I don't need to know all the details to come to (right) conclusions either.

I’d never question a leader’s competence or authority for making a single mistake or not “being as smart as I am”. I question it when someone is given authority in an area they have no experience/education in or understanding of and then dismiss me as wrong without being able to communicate why or how. If my role requires 10 years of experience as a subject matter expert and you’re appointed as a supervisor and come in with no experience and completely unrelated background and all you have is authority to throw around while also being short sighted and dismissive, you’re probably incompetent. If you’re dictating processes you can’t explain or don’t understand to someone who’s perfected their craft and you ignore their input or feedback, you’re probably incompetent. If you don’t understand what my role is or how it relates to the overall goal, yet you’re blindly answering arrogantly making decisions about my role, you’re probably incompetent. If I point out a preventable or avoidable error and you dismiss me until it blows up in your face, you’re probably incompetent. Basically: if you’re a barber who’s trying to tell the tax attorney you hired that they’re wrong about the area of tax law, you’re off base.

Same. This sounds like a personal problem, tbh.

It depends on whether the INTJ is Fi invested in the firm/organization. I streamline my OWN processes at work and set goals for the purpose of not being brain damaged from boredom (repetitive administrative tasks). Working my way up in my current job would be pointless, since I don't like the work and it is a for the means job...actual goals are outside of it.
