Thank you. My owners manual in my 2002 says fluid change in a manual transaxle is not necessary. I beg to differ. I use Walmarts brand Dexron III so I'm good to go. This is not the first video of yours that has helped me. Thank you!
Cool video. Love to watch your repair/maintenance videos. I like the design of that dipstick. Kind of like a wine bottle stopper thing that seals itself when you close the lever. Cool idea in Saturns part.
The Saturn Life lmao damn. One of my neighbors has a Saturn Ion and I have no idea what year it is but I love it. Mostly since the paint job is pretty nice lol I hope he/she decides to sell it one day.
I changed the fluid on my 5spd 97 SL2 today...I am so used to changing manuals that use gear oil in the 70-90 weight range. I was not expecting the fluid to come out so violently even though I was already aware that it was light weight ATF
I wonder if any other brands uses ATF as the manual transmission oil. Just surprised that Saturn designed its manual gearbox so compact that using ATF is fine (and recommended per owner’s manual).
Thank you for the response. That is what I thought you would say. I'm actually looking forward to doing a rebuild on it. There is a world of difference between volunteering, (having all the time you need) or having to beat a clock to make $. Without the stress wrenching is fun again. At least for me. Take care Sir
I recommend finding and removing the fill plug first and then drain the fluid. When you drain the fluid, and then discover you can't remove the fill plug, you are in a bad situation. Sometimes the fill port is in a stupid location, so be sure you have a flexible funnel or a hand pump. Most manual transmissions and transfer cases use a bolt for filling the unit.
+richpin06a i tend to stick to the manufacturers specs unless there is proof of a good reason to play with the oil, or if its too ill to matter. I know my limitations, although i dont allways stop myself from upsetting things, then spending hours getting it back to square one, blokes just have to tinker lol :-D
Dear Rich, You said you needed a 15 hex wrench yet I thought you used a 15mm socket. I just bought 3 liters of VALVOLINE (NAPA). I thought the drain plug was a bolt. I have no dipstick, but 2.5 litres works for me in any event. Thanks. David Alberts
Hey Rich, How many miles did the car have when you did the fluid change? Also, I didn't know there was even a dip stick on a manual. Thanks for showing us the location
@@RichpinTv Hey Richpin, I was hoping u could help me. I bought a MFactory helical Limited slip differential and I was trying to see what differential fluid goes into it recommended from GM. It's not in my owners manual, I called the dealership and they put my VIN in and nothing came up and I search online and I search differential fluid and the transmission fluid change comes up, i'm so frustrated by searching and if u could help, i'd be so so appreciative of it, thanks... .
I have a 96 sl1 and due to 🔥 temperature my manual clutch will not disengage until the outside temperature is below 85 degrees. The reason I believe is it needs a cooler?
Thank you Rich. I am a volunteer mechanic at my church. We have a nice shop with three lifts, a front end rack and some decent equipment. We give away about 30 donner cars a year and repair hundreds for people who can't afford it. I call it "fix it forward", (a phrase I borred from Eric The Care Guy with his OK). Anyway I'm working on a donner Saturn with a bad 3rd gear/syncronizor. I may rebuild this tranny in the future but for now do you know of any additive that might reduce the grind. BTW the donner told us it has been like that for over a year. Because it needed work the car was given to me instead of scraping it. I'm giving it to my son.
The name of the video and the title in the video says that this is how to change the fluid for a manual transaxle Saturn but you put fluid for an automatic transaxle in it. Am I missing something? I don’t mean to be rude, I’m just curious.
hey rich, I have a 1998 saturn sl2 sedan (automatic) still getting a vibration after changing all the mounts, including transmission mount, and transmission torque mount. I have no codes (DTC), about to change battery cables this weekend. I believe that saturns don't have harmonic balancers not sure of that, but if you have a idea what it could be can you send me a note, thanks.
Great job dude, excellent videos. Very informative as always plus I love your northeastern accent lol but I'm sure I sound funny to you too (Kentucky). thanks for the knowledge
SLIGHT speech impediment, more likely, but its irrelevant. I apologize for forgetting his name), I essentially fixed it up except aftermarket Windshield Wiper Transmission at -30°C January 2, 2008. A DIY man must know his limitations). My Ignition Control Module was $40 at a junk yard. Guy told me it came off a Pontiac. Easy to work on. Runs like a top.*** Saturn rebuilds other than engine guts, must be replaced by aftermarket parts (steel parts replacing plastic moving parts). I don't know who brainstormed that! 270.5K and I drive the heck outta it everyday, but always change fluids; Pennzoil Ultra, Valvoline transaxle oil, 50/50 coolant x 2, etc. David Alberts
Hey Rich I still haven't changed the fluid in my 2001 SC2 as of yet. The car is now becoming harder to shift when cold but when it warms up it gets easier to shift. I checked the fluid level and it's full and the fluid is still pink but it does appear to have some grime on the bottom of the stick as the fluid gravitates towards the bottom of the stick after removal. Could the old transmission fluid be the causeof this hard shifting problem? Also I can't find Dextron III anymore all I can find is Peak ATF equivalent to Dextron III Is that OK to use? Thanks
Rich, does the vehicle have to be completely level or tilted slightly to one side to to get a full and complete drain of the old transmission fluid? Thanks

@@RichpinTv Checked the post today. Again pleasantly surprised that all of the listed oil are ATF. Saturn and its manual transmission that’s designed to be lubricated with ATF, I always find it pretty weird.
Hey rich! I find myself needing more help as to I've started a manual transmission swap on my sc2, what kind of vent house do I need and where does it connect? Referring to the nipple on top of the actual transmission where it has the gear pattern furthermore any pointers on the connections too? Only connections I'm not having problems with are the ground wires and vehicle speed sensor thanks in advance love you're videos!
Thanks, will any hose work? And also that sensor right next to it broke on my gen 2 donor saturn and being that I've swapped my manual transmission in to my automatic how would I go about linking the sensors? Do I need to splice them or can I get by with just plugging in the vehicle speed sensor?
Hi Rich, I have a 2002 Saturn SL1 1.9L Standard. I keep getting a P0340 and P0410. I cleaned out the EGR, changed wires and plugs, replaced the secondary air motor (wasn't working).. Any other suggestions?
+Christopher Krawczyk The coil hold down bolts need to be cleaned on the P0340.The exhaust manifold and cylinder head could be carboned up on the P0410.
+richpin06a thank you for getting back to me Rich. I just cleaned my carb this morning. I did also clean and wire brush the coil pack and bolts as you instructed in your video when I cleaned it last week. I will definitely clean the manifold ones this weekend. Thank you again for getting back to me

Thanks Rich! This helped me out a lot. I still don't understand why they put the dipstick so far out the way....smdh!
+06SCOOTY06 They tuck it away probably because the transmission does not get checked as often as the engine oil.

I have a 2002 saturn vue with a front wheel drive manual transmission i4 engine. Is the drain plug in the same spot and is there a filter?
Looked really clean, i used to use atf in a moped years ago, new stuff allways looked like your old fluid :-)
2.6 us quarts is about 2.46 liters :-)

Make sure to have someone use a tech2 to change the option in the vehicles computer to manual transmission. Its a selectable option in these saturns.
