    I did this same job about 4 years ago on my daughter's car. Since then, she has sold that car and I gave her my SW2. Well, same thing has now happened with that car. She was lucky enough to get it to go back into 1st. and limp it home. Thanks for the video, I remember everything that I had to go through to change those cables last time, AND, I will be removing the shift tower this time, that was a great suggestion. Also, I hadn't thought about removing the inner fender splash guard, another good tip. I thought that I remembered that grommet going through the firewall being bolted in, but I guess not. The hardest part of the job for me was that grommet and getting those large locking brackets back on under the hood. Thanks for an excellent video, my job will be much easier now!!

      I think the bolt in option on the firewall grommet was for aftermarket cables, not OEM. I'm happy to know this has helped. Good Luck and thanks for watching!

    Excellent Video.
    Suggestion: The two large clips that hold the shift cables in place in the engine compartment are notorious for falling off. If you lose one, you are hosed. After you remove the two clips, drill a small hole in the top flat part of the clip and safety wire the clip into place, or at least to wire it to the car, so when the clip falls off you won't lose the clip.
    My son lost a clip on his 96 SC2, we spent an hour walking backroads trying find it. I ended up making a clip from a large flat washer, but if I had wired the clips to the car, we would have not been in that pickle. .

    • @pcofranc
      @pcofranc 7 лет назад +2

      The clips will never fall out unless... they are bent or damaged usually during removal by using a pliers and sometimes during install. Never had a clip fall out until after I changed my clutch. Clip was fine for about a month then it fell out! Put a new one in and have not had a problem in 10 years! As a temp fix you could tie the cable down with safety / utility wire.

    My '99 SL2 just went out today in mid traffic. My shifter went completely limp and would not engage with the clutch. I was able to coast to a parking lot and walk home. Hopefully this video will help fix my car when I get the parts in.

      Did the cable break like mine did? Usually the issue is the shifter bushing. I actually just replaced the bushing myself after it disintegrated in my office parking lot. Wish I had replaced it when I did the video, but still got decent life out of the original. Sadly no more Saturn videos as we are upgrading to a bigger people carrier very soon.

    I watched this film, bcs the bushing on transmission side fell out in our car 2003 Chevy Cavalier. I fixed it just by thick zip tie for a while. Meanwhile Chevy went on that zip tie connection 100 mi, that way we brought it home from another city, where that damage happened. We also have 2001 Saturn SL2, so I decided to check, how everything on Shifter Cable is designed in Saturn, and was pleasantly surprised, that actually Saturn has 2 shifter cables, as far as I understand. I'm curious, what happens if just one of them fails? I hope it is for the extra protection. I definitely replace that cable shortly (on Saturn, it has ~140K). Thank you for this great and useful film.

    Ryan Krauss commented that a shop tried to charge him $560 to replace the shifter cables and he talked them down to $420. My cables broke just as I was about to return home from visiting my sister and brother-in-law, 4 hours from home. Their mechanic is doing the job for $518 parts and labor - $565 including tax. I'm not so great at haggling. The guy I talked to said it's a 3-hour job. So do I say "some guy on RUclips" says it should only take 1-2 hours? Lol. Plus, far from home, I feel like I'm not in a great negotiating position. I really wish I WAS home. Not sure I could do this job myself, since I'm not that much of a mechanic. But with this video, I'd remove the air intake etc. and see if I thought I had enough access to do it. (There was that good tip about removing the wheel and splash guard to get better access.) Would have liked to try to do this myself and save almost $500, since the pair of shifter cables currently goes for $77 plus tax.
    I love my old 2002 Saturn SL2. 171,000 miles and so little maintenance expense in all those years and miles. (I'm the orginal owner.) Thanks for the great video! Still a few S-Series vehicles like mine out there!

    The car is 2001 Saturn SL2 w/automatic transmission. I wanted to remove the Steering Column on that car, but confused on one black cable in the plastic box, which is attached to the bottom of the Ignition Lock Cylinder Housing w/some clips and zip-tie (probably some clips were broken, so someone attached w/zip-tie, bcs I saw another film and there were just clips there). I'm afraid to remove that box w/cable going out of it, since think that it may mess up the lock (the box w/cable is sitting just under the Lock Cylinder). On another side that cable is attached under the Shifting handle in the same way how it is shown in this film. I couldn't find any similar Lock Ignition systems in films, besides the one mentioned above where the author just released that box slightly w/words: I don't know what will happen if to remove that box completely. I would appreciate any explanations on that box w/cable and its role in the Lock Ignition. Thank you for so detailed film.

I wanted to ask you a question I have a Saturn Vue 2006 and I brought my car in to get a new clutch replaced the whole thing and the place did not ask me if I needed a new linkage cable and I did in fact need it. I wind up having to go back twice because my first gear was messed up and he just kept telling me well it was always like that and I just didn't understand why he did not offer me the linkage cable and by the second time I thought he was going to fix the linkage cable and I would have paid for it I thought we were on the same page I just want to know aren't you supposed to offer this when you get it fixed when you get a full clutch repair? I'd appreciate it if you could let me know what you think? Thank you very much.

    • @jungleking007Channel
      @jungleking007Channel  9 лет назад +1

      It won't matter which gear the transmission is in when replacing the cables. You can play with the positioning of the levers on the transmission as much as you like and it won't ruin anything. When you reattach the cables everything will find its place. The cables broke on me as I was shifting from 3rd gear, but was able to maneuver the levers on the transmission to find neutral in order to move the car. Good luck!

    Quick question on the transmission side of the cables, is there anything aside from the small clips holding them in place? Specifically the upper one (white head), I pulled the small clip off but the cable will not budge. I've tried to pry pretty hard.

    • @jungleking007Channel
      @jungleking007Channel  7 лет назад +1

      both cable ends are held in by two clips, one at the lever and the second larger "U" clip on the transmission body. Around the 13-14 minute mark I show the clip locations. there is nothing else holding them in place.

    Hi i like your vids and its very informative.... but i have a question, i brought my car to the repair shop the other day, they told me that my shift cable are busted and needed to replace. Im pretty sure that they mess things up when they replace clutch kit two weeks ago.
    my question is when you change something inside the transmission like clutch kit, can you replace it without removing the shift cable?
    also, Im just wondering what is the percentage of the wear and tear of the shift cable? let say do you replace it every year or two or is there certain kilometer needed to follow before you change it? cuz we have other cars that more than 14years but we never had experience changing shift cable.
    thanks for the reply in advance.

    • @jungleking007Channel
      @jungleking007Channel  9 лет назад +1

      The cables will need to be unhooked from the transmission, but can be left attached to the shift tower in the console. They would have needed to remove the transmission to get to the clutch and flywheel. The shift cable has no recommended replacement interval. Its basically down to: "when it breaks it breaks".
      That's what happened to me and the need to make this video. Another normal day driving home from work, until I needed to flip to reverse, then pop, and I had a limp shifter.

My shifter is not totally limp. It's always been very easy to move with the lightest hand, but it's stuck in first gear, and I cannot move the shifter into the other positions. It'll go front to back but not left and right, and it just won't engage second. I can see some fraying on the cable but it appears to be connected still. The L-ish bracket that the cable is clipped to (@4:00) does not move at all. Please advise. Thank you in advance.

      It may still be the cables. The cables I used in this video didn't last long as I could not shift between 1st and 2nd, then 2nd to 3rd. Swapped in my second backup set I got just in case and worked fine ever since. The other thing to check is the fluid. Some times the fluid level or age can play a factor. otherwise, make sure all the clips are in their proper place and bushings are not destroyed. Hope this helps! Good Luck!

    I had a shop replace my cable, i didn't ever realize it had been going, and they said it had frayed much like yours but someone had already chucked the part.
    Either way everything seems fine however unlike before I feel like the stick shift is really loose whenever it's in gear.
    It shifts 1-5 and reverse just fine, but it feels so loose (in gear) it just bugs me something isn't right.
    Do you know what might cause that?
    or how to fix it :D?
    great vid

      its most likely the shifter bushing, NOT the cable bushing but the plastic bushing the handle itself uses

    • @pcofranc
      @pcofranc 7 лет назад +1

      Maybe the big U-shapped clip slipped out? But something is not right. After I installed my cable everything is back to the way it was - shifts the same. BTW how much did the shop charge? I shop I went to 7 years ago charged $636!

    • @pcofranc
      @pcofranc 7 лет назад +1

      The 'PROs" might have damaged it during install.

    • @johnpike9612
      @johnpike9612 7 лет назад +1

      Paul C if the retaining clips come loose it will not shift into whatever gear that cable controls. my money is on the shop screwed him and put a used shifter/cable assembly in and it has a worn shifter bushing, mine has a ton of slop in gear as well and it has new cables, cable bushings, and retaining clips. with the console removed put it in gear and then mkve yhe shifter around while watching for movement in the cables

    • @pcofranc
      @pcofranc 7 лет назад +1

      Very likely as the shop figures no one is ever going to look at the part which is mostly hidden. My car had several minor parts missing and other shortcuts even though I was charged $636 6 years ago by a local garage!

    Originally the mechanic wanted to charge me $560 p/l, I said that's bullshit and talked him down to $420, what are your thoughts on that?

    • @jungleking007Channel
      @jungleking007Channel  9 лет назад

      With parts probably being anywhere between $60-100 then possibly an hour or two of labor which the cost would vary by mechanic(around here its between 80-100 per/hr). Seems to be a bit high of a price for this job. However, they are probably looking in the book of estimated work time(can't remember the name of the book) and going off that. This is why I try to learn and do the job myself.

    • @luisg8946
      @luisg8946 4 месяца назад

      Perhaps ALLDATA. Every Mechanic goes by that so they can charge somewhat and not loose money. In my opinion is overly charged. Any professional mechanic can do it faster than estimated based on THE BOOK

    replaced the shifter bushing on the shifter
    recently shifting has become spongy (does not shift into gear easily)
    if cables don't show any sign of fraying or wear should I just try the bushing on the cable end from the cab first?
    What are your thoughts?
    Thanks

    Was it getting harder to shift? I think I have the same problem and I'm getting ready to replace the cables on my 98 sc2 before it breaks. There's no way the synchronizers are bad in so many gears all the sudden just slow gets harder to shift in 1st,2nd,4th and reverse.

      Might have a worn or stretched cable. Could also be the shifter bushing. I was having issues with the cables I installed in this video, where it was near impossible to shift to 3rd gear. I had a backup cable set and installed them. Everything works just fine now. Good luck!

      could be the bushing... I actually changed the cables again after this video was shot because of the issue you are mentioning. Think the cables were stretched somehow and throwing off the shift points.

      +matt hodges are they new cables or junkyard cables? If JY cables they may be stretched. I had to change the cables again a few weeks after finishing this video because they were somehow stretched and becoming impossible to switch between gears

    • @lodog0845
      @lodog0845 8 лет назад

      +JungleKing007 they are new cables but I maybe during the install maybe I stretched them. Besides that I was wondering if maybe it had something to do with the fly wheel. But I'll definitely check the cables

    • @jungleking007Channel
      @jungleking007Channel  8 лет назад

      +matt hodges don't think it's flywheel related. Could be cables, and or the cable mounting retainers, could be the shifter bushing, maybe even your clutch master and/or slave cylinder.

    Hi. I don't know alot about the cable going but apparently mine went. I decided to have a shop do it for me. The next day after cable was replaced same problem. Took car back. They said it slipped off. They said they fixed it. Picked up car again. Same thing happened again. Now they say it is the clutch. Am I being scammed?

    • @jungleking007Channel
      @jungleking007Channel  8 лет назад +1

      +Bonnie Aucoin check the clips where the cables are secured to the transmission housing as well as the ends where they connect to the tower. something may have come loose. Also, Did you see the cables that came off your car and verify they indeed were worn or broken(or swapped to begin with)? If someone ever works on my car, I request to see the new part going on and to have the old parts returned to me. Try running through the gears while vehicle is off. Each should engage and not bind(no need to press clutch pedal during this). If it's the clutch then you would have a hard time moving. I would suggest checking RUclips for a video on how to test the clutch. I think there is one by Ericthecarguy that is pretty informative. Hope this helps, good luck!
