Once again your video was more than helpful in guiding my fly-by-the-seat-of-my-britches car maintenance efforts! Thank you for your kind assistance in helping me to perform this task on my own with only the most basic of tools at my disposal and my driveway to work in. Your instructional videos have been a genuine service to those of us who are driveway mechanics!
So happy to have found this video. I have a 1997 Saturn sw2. Only had one previous owner. Mine has been doing the reverse slam too. Thankfully I found this video and the Saturn fans forum. I absolutely love my car. I had a 2017 Kia Forte....OMG bought it brand new, kept up with regular maintenance and it had so many problems. But this Saturn is my favorite. I wanted a Saturn growing up, finally got one. So, thanks for this video! Coming from a woman... learning to take car of my own car! Thank you 🤩
A buddy and I repaired my sister in law's reverse slam 5 years ago, including installing a remanufactured Sonnax valve body, and have had no issues since. It does take 2 people and some special tools but better than junking the car. Follow the Saturn forum how to.
I just want to say thank you for all your awesome videos.. I've been working on my daughter's Saturn quite a bit lately. we seem to be having a streak of really unethical garages here. I've gotten to where I don't trust any of them. it's really good to be able to watch your videos where you don't over-complicate things, the video quality is very good and you've helped me out a lot.
That’s the first time I have ever seen an external filter for the AT - pretty easy job to change. No wonder GM had to kill of Saturn, can’t have this kind of easy servicing design running around.
Wow, man. I love learning things. I'm getting ready to change the engine oil on my parents' sw1 as soon as the weather warms up a bit. I had NO idea that the trans filter looks just like the engine oil filter. I probably would've caught it, but just in case I didn't- You saved me a MAJOR headache. Thank you!!
Thanks to you +Richpin06a I have replaced my water pump, thermostat, radiator, and now my transmission fluid on my Saturn SL1. Saved lots of cash!! I will certainly recommend your advice to any Saturn owners out there!
Same here. My family owned several of the early to mid 90s Saturns. I loved how American built they were and these transmission filters were so easy to change and service.
They said that "disturbing" the old fluid with new fluid would stir up old sediment; my argument would be that's what the filter is for :) Thanks for the reply, keep up the great videos!
I am not sure myself because i have not worked on many Hyundai.A quick look through the Hyundai forums and it seems people are using ATF+4 fluid.Check your owner manual see if there is a recommended fluid besides SP3
I will add that you should return to that filter after a few days of driving. Get to it top side by removing the air resonator box. You will be able to give it an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn to your surprise. This will save you a future seep or leak. Common.
I'm all for that donation link, and the T-shirts. My wife and I have saved a lot of money in the past few years. And it seems like everyone at the auto stores know who you are when you say I got a little help from richpin. Lol
is it easier doing it from the top, Isn't it possible to just remove the driver side wheel and paneling and remove/replace the filter from there? Also Can I save some fluid by not draining it all fist and just let it come out from filter hole?
Hello richpin! Where were you able to find the transmission drain plug gasket???? I can't find it anywhere! O' Reilly's, Autozone, NAPA - nowhere to be found! Your help is greatly appreciated! I was thinking I could maybe use a regular gasket that's for the oil pan but I don't know.
Hopefully this could help, I have a 2003 L200 and it's transmission filter is under the pan IE the more traditional method. Best of luck in your travels I know this is an old comment but maybe if someone is looking for this information they can find it.
rich pin man you are the greatest you saved me lots of time and money going to gas stations that fix one thing and while their under the hood they cut your cv boots or loosen other parts hoping the victim will come back, any way thank tou rich pin you should set up a donation link
hi just want to say I did what you had said when you replaced the filter to put it hand tight when I did that it was fine but shortly after trans fluid started pouring out of the filter just wanted to get an opinion on what I need to do
+DRINKER0FBLOOD It's possible that the rubber o-ring on the old filter got stuck on the transaxle and when you put the new filter on you had two rubber O-rings that did not seal.
hnkfsh81 Thanks for the comment however I did look for that when I took old one off and it came off with the old filter and I double checked where it screws on made sure nothing was stuck on it
+richpin06a I had thought it was cause I talked to multiple people who said to do it like you have in the video and I did clean around it made sure it was and I didn't use any magnets as there were none
Richpin, you are the best. My only question, when I try to remove the air filter, I am having trouble with the front bolt, how did you get that one out? I have a 2002 SL2, Auto
I have a 1997 Saturn SC2 with an automatic transmission. So I called Jiffy Lube & asked how much do they charge to change the transmission fluid & filter and he said between $400-$600. I said to myself F**K THAT! I just changed the fluid & filter, a lot in part with the help of this video. Filter incl/taxes = $17.59, transmission fluid & drain pan incl/taxes = $39.80. Total Cost was $57.39 @Oreilly’s. I had a $20 coupon so I ended up spending a total of $37.39. It took me 4 hours to do it because it was my first time. I didn’t even have to lift the car because I was able to get under there from the front bumper to unscrew the drain plug. I did not remove the air duct, I disconnected the air box cover from the air box, removed the resonator & then the air box. After I removed the air box, I was able to remove the filter with both of my hands and I didn’t use a tool to do it. Thank you Richpin. You’re a boss. Friday 9/20/2024
how much different is the procedure if I have a 96 SL2 with a manual transmission? What type of fluid do I buy? is the filter or the drain plug in the same place? I know the dip stick is in a different place.
That's a great idea to put in what you take out. My only problem is that when I change ATF, it often ends up on the floor, in my hair, and basically all over the shop so it's hard to measure. It looks SO much easier when you have a drain plug, ha ha.
Be sure to check the "nipple" that the filter screws on to for the magnet. The first time I changed my transmission fluid on my Saturn, the magnet didn't come off with the filter so I figured there wasn't one. The second time I noticed there was something black and dirty still on the transmission. It was the magnet. It had somehow stuck to the transmission instead of the filter.
Hi richpin, awesome video(s) :) I read on a forum that if the AT fluid smells burnt, not to change it; it would cause more problems than good; why? wouldn't it always be good to replace the burnt fluid with new? Thanks!
There are two nuts that have to be replaced under the drivers side end cover on the transmission. If you go to saturnfans you will find a lot of information on this subject.
hi there great video i have a question, i went to my local store and ask for the transmission oil filter and they said that they dont have it, but i saw in the video that it is so similar to regular engine oil filter is that an special one or is the same filter for the engine as the transsmision ? thanks
@eloctocs13 basically that is what i do to get all the old fluid out except i take out a qt shut the engine off replace the qt and start over after about 4 qts i got it.
Rich, I have the dreaded Diff Pin failure and need to change my automatic transmission. I will be going to search for a transmission from a junkyard, but my question is what automatic transmissions are compatible with my 99' SL1? Models, engines, years etc? Thank you in advance.
In Haynes is says: Transaxle (1998 and later models) - 4.2 qts At ~3:00 you see the Air Temperature Sensor. If you forget to plug it back, how I did once, the car engine will continue to work even if you remove the key. I didn't know what to do and just disconnected the battery. This is very good film, thank you. But where did you get a new magnet if the one is missing? I thought it comes w/a new Transmission Filter, but seems you just put a filter without that magnet. Transaxle Drain Plug Torque is 20 Ft-lbs (for 2001 Saturn SL2, actually Hayne says 1991-2002).
@5:40 Is there any Gasket for TF PLUG??? No one shows that Gasket! Thank you for the film. Update: there are gaskets on those plugs. On my Saturn the Plug is M14-1.5, all the new plugs are sold w/gasket(s). And also I would like to worn everyone who does the procedure described in this great film: please check your torque wrench well. The procedure is simple, but it is easy to strip the threads if you apply higher torque. See I stripped a bit that hole and probably the original bolt using a faulty torque wrench. It didn't click and continued to torque, then I checked w/electronic one and it was 33 Ft-lbs instead of 22. I used a new Drain Plug, seems like it holds, but now I'm afraid to apply the required torque. Very upsetting mistake.
Thanks for the great video. However, I found easy access to the trans filter from underneath the raised car which saved a lot of steps. Otherwise, awesome.
Thanks but one question can I still used the old filters cause its kinda new and I also fluid from family dollar it say American xt multi purpose DexMerc can I still use this kind
Used filters will cause your problems to come back sooner. If your fluid was dirty enough to give you problems, your filter is dirty enough to need replacing. As for the cheaper oil, research it a bit first and if you like what people are saying, go ahead, but you may be taking chances that lower quality fluid could perform poorly or damage a very critical part of your engine.
I know that but I was told I would need the car on a level surface, meaning jack stands in front and back, or car ramps. Didn't really make sense to me since you only need the jack up the front on an oil change, which is pretty much the same as a tranny fluid change.
Hi, do you know if this procedure is the same or similar for this same car with a manual transmission? I was told that the fluid does not need to be changed on this car with a manual transmission. Any thoughts. I really enjoy your videos and appreciate all that you do. Thank you.
Thanks... also I just ordered a shot air ram intake with filter kit. The muffler I also wan't to replace with one that will direct fit, and give me that cool sound.
Great vid as always. Any chance you could make one on changing the oil pan gasket and or the fuel pump. What do think about the $30 fuel system/pump treatment that GM says can reverse pump wear from running it low on gas? Much cheaper than changing the pump but wanted to know if you had any dealings with it. Thanks so much!
Rich I have a 2000 Corolla with a 3 speed auto and want to change my fluid at home. I watched a RUclips video once that looked like it would work to get all the old fluid out. The guy removed the trans. line at the cooler and with the car running drained the old fluid while adding new at the same time. Would this work? Love your videos keep em coming.
hello richpin06a im about to make my transmission fluid change, well I have the problem of the reverse slam and I was wondering just assuming that I get 7 quarts of fluid and if I want to put lucas oil transmission fix of 24 oz do I need to balance the fuil and the lucas oil
Re: Trans Fluid. I did the first trans fluid change on my 96 SL 1 with regular Dexron II-III fluid and still had pretty bad reverse slam. Yesterday -- after about 30K miles, I changed the fluid to Dexron ii-III full synthetic and the trans has never shifted better. I was also throwing a 0733 code which I cleared and so far it has not returned.
Just a heads up, There is a TSB that says after the first 30k and fluid change, toss the magnet for the filter, it is no longer needed, and won't fit on non-oem saturn filters anyways.
do we fill the oil from the same spot? Also in some forums I read that for high milage car to put motor oil in transmission. Is this true or is just regular ATF to be put? Thank you for all your help.
with the magnet thing, the aftermarket filters holes get covered by the magnet that's why it wasn't there, unless the filter is the same as the stock one don't replace the magnet you'll loose flow of fluids
Thanks again Richpin, I figured it out after I wrote the comment. Had to have a shop help get the filter off, they spent about 30 minutes and lots of cussing to get it off. Replaced the filter, and took about 5.5 quarts of fluid. It's shifting correctly, but it shift really hard now into 2nd gear. It also makes a bit more whining than it used to in gears 2-4. Any suggestions? I know some have said to try dexron VI in place of the standard Dex III I picked up at wal-mart
I have a 2003 Saturn vue v6 engine, and I do allot of the work myself.. I change my own oil and use Mobil1 5w30 high mileage since the vehicle has 183,000 mile on it.. How do you change the transmission fluid in the vehicle? My chilton manual says I dont need to change it, but there is a delay by a second or two when I shift gears, and with the high mileage I know it needs to change.
Was just wondering since you work on so many Saturns did you work for a Saturn dealer or something and for how long if so? Seems you know all the tricks to them. Good vid as allways.
I'm not familiar with this model of Saturn, but don't you also have to drain the torque converter to get all of the old transmission fluid out of the transmission? Not sure if you would have to do that on this model of Saturn...
@richpin06a I will look for a fill cap which I haven't seen one on the vehicle. Or it could be buried somewhere. I also read that I should use a scan tool to make sure the right amount of fluid is replaced with the same amount and at the right temperature. I honestly would like to do it myself, but am very Leary of doing it myself since I'm afraid of not using the right transmission fluid and not the right amount. I have a 2003 Saturn Vue V6 engine, FWD.
@richpin06a. That's smart. I'm glad I asked. Thank you for the videos been very helpfull. For got to ask but do I have a trans. filter on my 00' Corolla and if not do I need to drop the pan even just to clean it?
Hello Richpin, Thank you for your great videos!! I recently had a 1997 Saturn DOHC engine replaced. Afterwards the engine was revving high on the highway. It appears that something is slipping in the automatic transmission. Is there an adjustment that can be made in the transmission to help? Thank you, Hugh
@jamescrowton007 From what i can tell it looks like one of those transaxles like the Audi were there is no dipstick and only a fill and drain plug on the transaxle.

@docthemac I should have mentioned that it is possible to replace the filter from the bottom if you choose.
thanks Rich for all these great saturn videos
Changed the filter and transmission fluid on my 99 Saturn SL2 today. Your video was very helpful to make things easy.
As an owner of several of these cars I highly recommend these trans fluid changes, in other words just do it along with motor oil changes..
So Rich, what did you do with the old trans fluid? Will the parts store where you purchased your new fluid take you old fluid? Thanks!
Thank you Rich for this video. Help me out a lot. First timer.
I am not sure myself because i have not worked on many Hyundai.A quick look through the Hyundai forums and it seems people are using ATF+4 fluid.Check your owner manual see if there is a recommended fluid besides SP3
Thanks richpin videos are always great.
Would you recommend using synthetic Dexron VI in this transmission? I've read that it's backward compatible with Dexron III.
I will add that you should return to that filter after a few days of driving. Get to it top side by removing the air resonator box. You will be able to give it an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn to your surprise. This will save you a future seep or leak. Common.

These videos are great, richpin has got the stuff.
Thank you my friend.
Great video! It really helped me I wouldnt have found that filter without this. Very informative!
I'm all for that donation link, and the T-shirts. My wife and I have saved a lot of money in the past few years. And it seems like everyone at the auto stores know who you are when you say I got a little help from richpin. Lol
@spelunkerd Why they all do not have drain plugs i have no idea.
is it easier doing it from the top, Isn't it possible to just remove the driver side wheel and paneling and remove/replace the filter from there? Also Can I save some fluid by not draining it all fist and just let it come out from filter hole?
I believe removing the filter from the top is the best way. Most of the fluid is in the lower part of the transaxle.
I know, to check the fluid level, the engine has to be warm. Does the engine need to be running when you check the level?
yes!
where did you learn all this stuff man your a blessing
If you are working on the Saturn S then the dip stick for the transmission is located behind the battery and down.
I have never tried dexron VI but i do know Mobil 1 Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid is a better fluid.
Dealership
So the magnet should be placed inline instead of the outside of the filter unit?
awesome video, both in content and in filming. thanks
great instructions! but, you can do this in a 2002 saturn L100?
Hopefully this could help, I have a 2003 L200 and it's transmission filter is under the pan IE the more traditional method. Best of luck in your travels I know this is an old comment but maybe if someone is looking for this information they can find it.

@GTVAlfaMan The magnet goes in the hollow area inside the end of the filter.
best of the best of the best S-Series videos
Thank you for the kind words.
Rich, What is that sensor right next to the filter in this video. I have broken mine and need to know what part to buy.
That is a temp sensor.
Thank you.

+richpin06a ok, thank you for the information, I don't have a owner's manual but I'll Google it

That's a great idea to put in what you take out. My only problem is that when I change ATF, it often ends up on the floor, in my hair, and basically all over the shop so it's hard to measure. It looks SO much easier when you have a drain plug, ha ha.
There is no filter on a manual trans, so you may skip that step. But it is pretty much the same as far as steps, but there will be less fluid.
Be sure to check the "nipple" that the filter screws on to for the magnet.

Rich,
I have the dreaded Diff Pin failure and need to change my automatic transmission. I will be going to search for a transmission from a junkyard, but my question is what automatic transmissions are compatible with my 99' SL1? Models, engines, years etc? Thank you in advance.
As far as i know the 98-02 had one for the sohc (mp6) and dohc (mp7)
only corresponding. to first engine. SL1,SW1 & SC1. from 1996 to 1999
In Haynes is says: Transaxle (1998 and later models) - 4.2 qts
At ~3:00 you see the Air Temperature Sensor. If you forget to plug it back, how I did once, the car engine will continue to work even if you remove the key. @5:40 Is there any Gasket for TF PLUG??? No one shows that Gasket! Thank you for the film.

Is it as easy as finding it? or does anything need to be moved? Thanks
I would suspect they would bypass just like a oil filter so if that is the case you would not know.
Very good video, very direct and simple, thanks
Thanks but one question can I still used the old filters cause its kinda new and I also fluid from family dollar it say American xt multi purpose DexMerc can I still use this kind
Used filters will cause your problems to come back sooner. If your fluid was dirty enough to give you problems, your filter is dirty enough to need replacing. Do I have to have my car on a level surface when draining the fluid? Or will placing jack stands only in the front of the car be fine?
Jack stands will let you get under the car to remove the drain bolt.
I know that but I was told I would need the car on a level surface, meaning jack stands in front and back, or car ramps. Didn't really make sense to me since you only need the jack up the front on an oil change, which is pretty much the same as a tranny fluid change.
Eric Ver Linden
Jacking up all four corners would be best like a lift but personalty i just use ramps to do the oil change.
K thanks.
richpin06a
do you put all 4 tires up on ramps or just the front?
The 2.2 L is different. You should not wait for a sign because some damage might already be done by then.
Yes you fill with ATF through the dip stick hole.
Rich I have a 2000 Corolla with a 3 speed auto and want to change my fluid at home.
I watched a RUclips video once that looked like it would work to get all the old fluid out.

@Richpin. Great video. Is there a difference between Dexron for GM cars and Dexron for Ford. And if so, why is there a difference?
Great video, sir was wondering if you have video for changing rear Saturn wheel bearing s series. 👍
I do not have a video on replacing the rear wheel bearings at this time.

Yesterday -- after about 30K miles, I changed the fluid to Dexron ii-III full synthetic and the trans has never shifted better. I was also throwing a 0733 code which I cleared and so far it has not returned.
What is the exact amount of ATF fluid and can I use synthetic over conventional ?
I have a 98 Saturn SL automatic
@Koolbreaze7 I believe the dex/merc is a good replacement.
@docthemac I have a couple saturns that might need the pans in the future which i will do a video on.
I am glad i could help.
Any experience with 2009 Saturn XE 4 cylinder tranny fluid change ? Have been told there is no dip stick, etc.
I have not but i am seeing no dip stick more and more on newer vehicles.
Just a heads up, There is a TSB that says after the first 30k and fluid change, toss the magnet for the filter, it is no longer needed, and won't fit on non-oem saturn filters anyways.
@eloctocs13 Yes you do and you have to drop the pan to change it.
do we fill the oil from the same spot? Also in some forums I read that for high milage car to put motor oil in transmission. Is this true or is just regular ATF to be put? Thank you for all your help.
with the magnet thing, the aftermarket filters holes get covered by the magnet that's why it wasn't there, unless the filter is the same as the stock one don't replace the magnet you'll loose flow of fluids
+Noah Navin Very good tip for everyone to follow.

I have an 05 vvue. Is there a way to Do The clutch without dropping sub frame and pulling the transmission
I know some have said to try dexron VI in place of the standard Dex III I picked up at wal-mart
have you ever done the sump filter?
No i have not.
You did not flush the system. What about the fluid in the torque converter?
Does this drain all the fluid or only half?
You can never drain all the fluid because of the toque converter.
Thank you
@smuckers77 No..the longer you leave dirty fluid in there the more harm you can do.
Because of the toque converter you will need to flush to remove all of the old fluid.
How do you read the fluid? The reading is never the same and it just looks like splatter. Can you take a picture of what full looks like?
Google "saturn reverse slam" and see if it fits the problems you are having.
I see this video is old but isn't there also another filter inside the transmission
@richpin06a. That's smart. I'm glad I asked. Thank you for the videos been very helpfull.
For got to ask but do I have a trans. filter on my 00' Corolla and if not do I need to drop the pan even just to clean it?
Hello Richpin,
Thank you for your great videos!!
I recently had a 1997 Saturn DOHC engine replaced. Afterwards the engine was revving high on the highway. It appears that something is slipping in the automatic transmission. Is there an adjustment that can be made in the transmission to help?
Thank you,
Hugh
If the vehicle did not have this problem before the engine swap and the transmission was not touched why do you think it is a transmission problem.
you didn't flush the torque converter = only a partial fluid change.
Gotta say I love youtube it makes a hour job for me to figure out what's what's turn into a 15 min quicky
?so wondering what's the purpose of the magnet?
i have a 1999 sc2 and like to change the oil. Is it possible to use Dexron 6 instead of Dexron 3?
Hey rich, have u considered swapping in a twin cam?
@jamescrowton007 From what i can tell it looks like one of those transaxles like the Audi were there is no dipstick and only a fill and drain plug on the transaxle.
The magnets have a strong tendency to stick to the block, make sure, they're kinda tricky to get off actually.
I had to use 2 hooks on each side of magnet to get it off it was covered with grey syrupy worn down metal plus the shavings the size of a 2 day beard
can you use the same size/kind of filter as the oil filter?
NO. Not the same as the oil filter. Go to Rock Auto.com for a Wix filter.
I see nothing wrong with changing the fluid on the standard which is almost the same procedure without the filter.
I am glad to hear that.
