thanks James! This has taken the mystery out of the code p0017.... how to check and see if the cam timing and crank timing are in phase with out spending 16.0 hours pulling the valve cover and front timing cover on a colorado 2.9. to check phaser and chain alignment!
You rock this issue is exactly the problem with my dead Trailblazer. I know it is..I am going to buy the part and pray this is it. I have got to get this vehicle running!!
James Danner Many thanks and I am linking this video to my channels as a source to help others with their Trail Blazers. Mine is running GREAT now. So many thanks to you and your diagnosis of the problem which lead me directly to mine. Once I figured out he VVT failure I found underlying issues such as coils that failed. Once everything was repair/replaced all codes were gone and off to the races. I hope you do not mind my linking your page and this video to my channel showing the repairs and the truck running. It has been a long three months since it has been road ready.
Great work James.. You had a Danner moment when you said, "What is that" sounded just like Paul, lol... I'm still amazed at your knowledge...I Believe. More videos please lol. Thank you
Thanks for this video. Does the cam actuator require any calibration? I have a p0017 on a 4 cyl Colorado and am missing a screen on the actuator. Once you install the part are there any other steps?
Thanks for the great video. You guys are really making my want to buy a scope. You are teaching me a lot. Even if I decide to take my car in, it does help that I can talk the shop using common terms and I know when they are trying to pull a fast one. I hope GM picked up the tab for the repair, sure seems like faulty design issue. When I had I VW, I would take the car in for repairs, I would research the repair on enthusiast sites. When presented the bill, I would show them the service bulletin, few minutes of discussion with the service manager and the repair would be free, at least the portion pertaining to the service bulletin. In this case, they could easily argue that it was the lack of maintenance that caused the issue since there was no oil.
Was that a GM or aftermarket Solenoid with the wire around the screen . None I have replaced seems to have them wires and looks like a good idea ,sense the screen gets messed up a lot..
So changing the oil really makes this engine run better?? I swapped this engine 5 months ago and it’s having same issue. Changed VVT solenoid now it stalls even worse but 1 thing I didn’t do was change then oil when I did that. Have code p0300 and camshaft sensor intermittent. U think that’s the problem?
Nice! Ive got a 2002 rav4 4 cyl with vvti issues. Solenoid seems to work good I believe the intake phaser is sticking. wish me well. Im gonna take the phaser apart to see whats up.
I just bought an 06 Trailblazer, runs very smooth and quiet, It was low on maybe half quart low so I added oil then got gas. then lt threw a code 0014 that same day, went away on it's own within 20 minutes, then couple days later when I went to start it the thing cranked over very rough and did not want to run. couple more tried it started and ran just fine. no isue's for another couple days until the code 0014 came on again. changed the oil, next day it threw the 0014 again? still runs just
Nice video James! Thanks for taking the time to educate us. I miss your videos, you still rocking the beard? Tell nick he needs to talk more! Lol. Thanks again brother!
P0017 code on my 05 Trailblazer same engine... Changed the VVT solenoid and changed oil code went away but then came back.. I bought the cam sensor could it be that? Thanks and great video. I don’t have fancy readers is my problem, just a typical scanner.
I have a 2005 with the P0017 code also. I've changed the crankshaft sensor, the camshaft sensor, the VVT solenoid and now the Cam Phaser itself - still getting the code. Were you ever able to figure out what the problem was?
@@alanbarnes4991 Nope I did all the sensors, VVT,cam, crank etc… it’s about 20k later (200k) and it still comes off and on, I’m thinking there’s slack in the timing chain or a worn tensioner.. Not about to fix the timing chain most likely run it into the ground, or sell it and get a truck.. something V8 and LS based. If you figure it out let us know. Goodluck!
@@alanbarnes4991 I tow cars and all, I haven’t had an issue yet.. I can tell slight loss of power/worse gas mileage when the check engine light comes on. And i can usually tell when it will come on, most of the time it starts and idles rough for a second or two then the light pops on. 🤷🏼♂️
@@Gen01Lee Sounds like the same thing we're having. I can't get past emissions with the code popping up, so I'm going to let the dealer spend a little time with it, but direct them specifically at what I want them to look at, and then I'll do the work myself once I have an idea from them. If I get a definitive answer, I'll let you know :)
@@alanbarnes4991 Ok hopefully you can figure it out. I usually do an oil change, put good gas in it maybe a cleaner or octane booster and take it easy on the truck right around emissions time. As soon as the lights off I drive it up and down the highway to make sure those cells or whatever they’re called are closed on the ECU. Every car is different, most can have a certain amount open and still pass. I haven’t had an issue yet. But like I said my light comes on some times than goes away. Goodluck!
yea. its gonna be same technique. graph cam and crank sensors. look for a base sync...make sure oil level is full.. see if u have a way to energize the solenoid and watch graph for anomalies . I did hear that the vanos unit itself is a common failure. and may be rebuildable
+Jose Henrique I'm not sure what an omega is. If it's a gm 3.6l they have issues with timing chain stretching. And I think I saw a bulletin about the tone ring on the crankshaft slipping out of position
good question , i believe channel 1(crank) was at 50v and 2(cam) was 20v and i moved them around so they didnt clash. and even tho the crank sensor is an ac generator according to mitchell i had a cleaner signal w/dc chart due to the dual graph and all i really needed to see was the double hump of no1 reference for comparison
u would be shocked by how many cars I see that come from general repair/tire shops for the diagnostic and repairs we specialize in with no oil on the stick. half the time I can see the oil sticker on the windshield and determine how many thousands of miles they are overdue. I think most of these people drive on oil so long its just breaking down and burning it.
+James Danner I'm just trying to understand what I'm looking at when I plug my scanner up to my car so that I will know how to fix things in the future. I know there's something wrong with my car but I don't know how to read the scanner. I don't know what any of the acronyms stand for.
+Aaron Dunn tell me about it. There are some newer cars that have 10 different lists to even choose from and pids I never saw before. Your kind of request could make for a really good video. My brother probably has one. But at this stage , any questions u have on a more specific level, no matter how many or how often , I'll help if I can..when I can
+James Danner ok... great. Thanks so much. Yeah, im awefully new at this but im collecting all of these Snapon products tp be equipped to fic my car when i need to. I really want to learn how to diagnose cars. I think my OBDII port is not communicating with my scanner.

nice. around here, Danner moments are usually brain farts. Ha
simple and to the point. keep them coming

Hey guys, a new video from my bro. It's about time :)
New-ish 😊

As in not quite new but not old either. LOL
Cleanest 'old' motor eraaarrrr!!!
Thanks James love the video that you do and Paul video
i want too thank you for you to let other people learn from you thank you to my you are a top mechanic god bless you
I want to thank you as well for watching and the feedback. i enjoy it God bless u also
Great Video Jim! I hope you charged this customer for the oil. LOL

yes gm from local chevy dealer.. like 60 bucks
Very nice and clear.Thanks Danner.

Great video Danner. Did you find the screen in the oil or is it disintegrated?
i drained the oil into a pan and found nothing. if i have time, i was gonna pull the valve apart an see if most of it got pushed inside
Well done Danner - thanks 😄
thanks Steve

you bet. let me know the outcome. I've seen the toyota v6s valves stick intermittently and cause a whole bank of misfires. but no 4 cyl issues yet

good job danner i have the p0014 code but on a 09 nissan maxima my bro already changed the solenoids any advice
Nice find/fix.

thanks. and yes. my bro and i both went in the early 90s way before any of this cool stuff was around
thanks for the waveforms!!!

you are welcome, thanks for watching
James I have the same codes P0014 P0017 on a 2002 BMW M3 3.2L would you take the same approach? or what are your thoughts?

what happened to 3 quarts of oil?
so many people neglect maintenance
Please help...
I was getting P0014 and I changed the vvt and now it runs rough and I get p0016.
Please help anyone
any chance there is a short, holding the solenoid on? I can't remember if there are o-rings in between the sections or not but maybe a cut one?
Wipes dipstick on pants 👖 lol
Take the screen off the vvt. Idc wut they say
This vvt is gonna keep us busy for some time !!! good for us but it sucks for the car owner. In my opinion vvt sucks !!
yea. especially when u have a v6 with 3 timing chains. ka-ching!
and.....no oil...lol
