Yo Shaq! I worked with the lighting crew, I was there. That was in Moscow... 1991. It was the Monsters of Rock tour. Pantera, The Black Crows, Metallica, AC/DC and a Russian metal band played. It was held at an airfield. They expected about 100,00 people to attend and the last official count was that over a million showed up. There were over 10,000 police and military types there to control the crowd. There were clashes. Hundreds of police ended up hurt and about 50 people died. After the fall of the Berlin wall the kids were still fighting for their freedom from soviet oppression. This gave them a chance to come out and rock! Getting out a lot of pent up aggression. Music can be a driving force for unity. It was the last night of that tour. I remember thinking on the trip home about those kids over there fighting for their rights... and paying for them sometimes in blood. How fortunate I was to live in America. RIP Dime-bag Darrel! We miss you...

This was the Soviet Union’s first Metal concert featuring “Western” musicians. The Monsters of Rock festival in Moscow 1991. It included AC/DC headlining, with Metallica, Pantera, the Black Crowes and a local Russian band as support. It was free to attend and the stage was built on an airfield. 1.5 million people attended the show that day. Crazy

I wasn't there but I remember watching the footage on MTV, probably headbangers ball. This concert was a BIG deal for Russia at the time. I think I remember the Black Crowes went on after Pantera. (Pantera wasn't greatly known back then) I remember The Black Crowes singer Chris Robinson complaining about Pantera's performance, saying something to the effect of, We need to have peaceful and love music and that band Pantera needs to chill out, or something like that. It's funny to think about that now and how Pantera had no intention to chill. Epic performance, thanks for sharing your reaction. Made my day.

Bro, I’ve been watching you here and there throughout the years. So fucking happy you did some research and understood what was at stake with Pantera. They’re legendary in all of music. That is one of the greatest performances every. You’re the man.
Edit: Shaq, just in case you didn’t know. The reason why there are so many people at that concert is because it took place right after the collapse of the Soviet union actually. Up until that point no western music/culture was allowed or tolerated in the country. So when the Soviet Union fell apart a bunch of rock ‘n’ roll and heavy metal bands went to go play this concert. The Russians were beyond excited because they loved western culture in secret. The result was like, close to a million people. If you watch the full video that this video is taken from you can see Soviet police beating concertgoers with rubber sticks because they were enjoying themselves. Even though the Soviet union had fell apart a lot of the strict rules and standards were imposed; people were still oppressed. This concert was very legendary and will go down in history.

    Pantera- Cemetery Gates
And as far as the whole shooting goes. Pantera split up and Dimebag and Vinnie Paul went to form a band called Damage Plan, a dedicated fan from when they were Pantera started in an argument at a signing event and they threw him out of building where they were doing autographs and stuff. A little while later in Columbus Ohio, damageplan was doing a show and the guy, I believe his name was Nathan Gale, entered from backstage and shot Dimebag in the back and in the back of the head several times, then he went after a couple other people, the police showed up and shot the man dead. Basically the guy was a crazy fan who was upset about Pantera splitting up. But man for real one of their best songs is Cemetery Gates. Please check it out man you will not regret it.

React to Harvester of Sorrow by Metallica 1991 Live in Moscow Russia!! - this was at the same concert with upwards of 1.5 million people!!!! and just a few months before the Soviet Union collapsed.. This concert was in a time very significant to modern history.. Helicopters were flown very low over the crowd to try and suppress them and reports are that 51 people died at this concert, many by soviet soldiers and militia. \m/ rock on buddy glad you are opening your mind and listening to some metal!!!

It's funny how year after year the supposed number of people in the audience gets higher and higher. In actuality there were roughly 750K people (which is still a hell of a crowd). That show will definitely be remembered for a long long time.

Yes will be remembered for quite awhile, especially considering it's context in history.. One hell of a time to be playing music like this in Russia. The crowd must have felt so free!
