The M1 Abrams (/ˈeɪbrəmz/)[7] is a third-generation American main battle tank designed by Chrysler Defense (now General Dynamics Land Systems)[8] and named for General Creighton Abrams. Conceived for modern armored ground warfare and now one of the heaviest tanks in service at nearly 68 short tons (62 metric tons), it introduced several modern technologies to US armored forces, including a multifuel turbine engine, sophisticated Chobham composite armor, a computer fire control system, separate ammunition storage in a blow-out compartment, and NBC protection for crew safety. Initial models of the M1 were armed with a licensed-produced 105 mm Royal Ordnance L7 gun, while later variants feature a licensed Rheinmetall 120 mm L/44.
The M1 Abrams was developed from the failure of the MBT-70 project to replace the obsolescent M60 tank. There are three main operational Abrams versions, the M1, M1A1, and M1A2, with each new iteration seeing improvements in armament, protection, and electronics. Extensive improvements have been implemented to the latest formerly designated M1A2 System Enhancement Package version 3 or SEPv3 and M1A2 SEPv4, respectively versions such as improved composite armor, better optics, digital systems and ammunition.[9]
The Abrams was to be replaced in U.S. Army service by the XM1202 Mounted Combat System, but since that project was cancelled, the Army has opted to continue maintaining and operating the M1 series for the foreseeable future by upgrading with improved optics, armor, and firepower.
The T-72 is a family of Soviet/Russian main battle tanks that entered production in 1969.[10] The T-72 was a development of the T-64, which was troubled by high costs and its reliance on immature developmental technology. About 25,000 T-72 tanks have been built, and refurbishment has enabled many to remain in service for decades.[11][12] It has been widely exported and has seen service in 40 countries and in numerous conflicts. The T-90 introduced in 1992 is a development of the T-72B;[13] production and development of various modernized T-72 models continues today.
An autoloader or auto-loader is a mechanical aid or replacement for the personnel that load ordnance into crew-served weapons without being an integrated part of the gun itself. The term is generally only applied to larger weapons, such as naval weapons, tanks, and artillery; that would otherwise have a dedicated person or persons loading them.[1][2]
An autoloader extracts a shell and propellant charge from the ammunition storage rack/compartment and loads it into a magazine or belt, if the gun has one, or directly into the chamber of the gun if it does not. It often replaces a human loader. Automation can streamline and speed the loading process, resulting in a more effective design.
With a smaller crew, the vehicle can also be made smaller inside. This reduces the amount of surface area that needs to be armored, meaning the vehicle, especially the turret, can be smaller and lighter. With a lower profile, the tank is harder both to spot and to hit.

It actually isn't very strange at all, and there is a legitimate engineering concept at work here. Park a T-72 next to an M1 and you'll notice that the American tank is noticeably taller than the Russian one. No problem. It was originally designed to sit hull-down in a fixed, prepared position defending the borders of Western Europe with just the turret visible so height was no real issue making the human loader much more practical.
The Russians on the other hand, KNEW their tanks would be the ones crossing open terrain to assault NATO tanks. So as a result they went with an auto loading system allowing the tank to mechanically load on the move without the human loader having to worry about being tossed around the turret by an evasively maneuvering tank. This also meant that the tank could be approximately a foot shorter. This meant that even incrementally the tank would be a smaller target and therefore harder to hit while on the move in the open.
It was a conscious design choice made based on the criteria of the 70s and 80s. They just haven't seen fit to change the design, its only of the most widely exported tank models in the world so the then Soviets and now Russians don't see any reason to abandon the concept.

Lots of folks just assume Russian tanks are built shitty because #Communism but more often than not they're REALLY good tanks when you look at what the Russian designers were actually trying to accomplish at the time. Just because something seems dumb to us doesn't mean it doesn't make sense to someone who's entire strategic doctrine is different.

@@1973mrak Улетает башня и испаряется экипаж почти в 100% попадания с ПТУР или ПТРК только у нашего 💩. Из-за хвалёной системы самозаряжания. У Абрамса БК (боекомплект) находится в отдельной капсуле за бронированной дверью. И в случае подрыва БК вся взрывная волна вылетает вверх чтобы спасти экипаж. В нашем 💩 экипаж и БК находятся в одном "помещении" можно сказать в обнимку. Гугл в помощь (фото подбитых Абрамсов).

Yes, but american tanks prioritize crew safety more than efficiency of the tank. Soviet tanks with auto-loaders often have their turret flying to the sky if the ammo explodes, but the usa has a blast door so even if the ammo explodes it will protect the crew and make it non-lethal. I might get something wrong here, correct me if it is. (forgot to mention but they also have blowout panels to let the ammo cook off safely)

@@samhamsord7942Да. Действительно лучше. Автоматическая перезарядка решает много проблем, включая ту, что тебе не нужен заряжающий, а значит и вес танка меньше. Да, может ломаться, но так все ломаются. Это не нова, иди комменты читай, одного японского Т70 хватит, чтобы ты промыл себе мозги святой водой. Даже если танк будет уничтожен, в нем умрет на человека меньше.

from what I know, an advantage of an extra crew member, is that once a guy dies in the tank, the extra crew member would replace him.
meanwhile automatic reloads does provide faster reloading but is pretty much under armoured, which is why many russian tanks were destroyed in Ukraine.

@@pottatocommando7973 a human loader is way faster than an autoloaser, the pluses of one are cost saving (training is long and you will man more tanks with less people) and the size, a smaller target makes it harder to hit and saves on the material costs. By now the soviet autoloaders are obselete, the t-90m autoloader has some armor so it isnt that bad.

I'd say the guy knows more about tanks than you. The blast doors and the separate ammo compartment mean a life and death difference in combat if a penetrating hit happens. The US, UK or German tanks won't do a routine turret toss like russians.

Не, ну заряжать может и командир стать, если заряжающего выбили, как не как ещё 3 члена экипажа. Теоретически танк может функционировать даже с 2 членами экипажа

Дело в том что автоматическое заряжение очень опасна для танка, поэтому на видео украинских дорогах можно увидеть как 1 дрон полностью подрывает танк. А если посмотреть на российские дроны то в основном западная техника горит но не взрывается

@@Briselance except for when there is a catastrophic failure than it becomes even slower to load ammo for the t72 and other varients of the russian mbts that use autoloaders because the crewman have to reach over seats/underneath seats and lift ammo into the breach. No only that, there's one less crewmember for maintenance, firewatch, repairs, and everything else associated with tanking with an auto loader. More moving parts that are prone to failure. More stuff that can go wrong thats the reason why the us still has a manual loader because manual loaders are just that much better and reliable.

Западные ОБТ, созданные после появления Т-64 разрабатывались, как истребители танков, имели толстые лбы и хрустальные борта и крыши. В этом плане Абрамс оказался самым универсальным из танков НАТО. Но тот же Леопард к примеру хоть и является идеальной машиной для кемпинга в Вар Тандер, но в то же время не может выстоять против мавика с ручной гранатой... Об 187 должен был продолжить идею Советской концепции и стать основной платформой для последующих модернизаций, но не срослось к сожалению. Хотя он мог бы стать лучшим танком, 7 катковая ходовая, большой запас по наращиванию массы, до 60 тонн, а габариты то маленькие.... Короче инженеры понимали, что прогресс не стоит на месте и ещë в конце 70-х поняли, что нужно меньше внутреннего объема в угоду габаритам брони. Подождите 10 лет и западная концепция огромных твердолобых исполинов уйдёт на задворки истории.

Well no, auto loading is extremely inefficient and tanks that have an auto loading system tend to have their turrets and crew get sent straight to the heavens. An abrams has blowout panels and manual reloaders. The blowout panels prevent the ammo from killing everyone inside the tank by directing the ammunition explosion outwards, and manula reloaders can reload the tank in 3-4 seconds flat while an auto loader can take upwards of a minute due to how they were designed to check every single shell slot for ammo and even try to load ammo that simply doesnt exist

Если же его пустить на украинский театр военных действий где абсолютно все танки двигаются туда сюда чтоб как можно меньше попадать под обстрелы артиллерии, разведки с дронов и т.д, то абрамсы будут дольше перезаряжаться (по моему мнению перезарядка с 5-6 секунд которая является нормой для стоячего абрамсы вырастет до 8-10 секунд и она будет зависеть от скорости танки и типа местности)
Т72 т90 и их модификации перезарядка 7 секунд. У абрамса Типо 5 но согласен первый второй пока заряжающий не выдохся 5-6 уже секунд 15-20 после 10 по минуте наверное. А если на ходу по пересечении то может и не попасть😂😂😂😂

@@rayotoxi1509 i stand behind some things dont need automation. I trust simplicity. Whatever the simplest way to do something is, the less likely it is to fail. Im not saying all autoloaders are useless, but if the loader got taken out somehow another crew member could take his place and keep returning fire to try and eliminate the threat. If an autoloader fails it needs to be repaired (which i am aware most are streamlined and typically a repair can be done within 30 minutes but 30 mins in a firefight may as well be a year)
What costs more, an entire autoloader or a 19 year old with strong hands?
If the author wanted to show the malfunctions of the autoloader, why not show how the loader have to load a shell on Abrams when the tank is moving 30 km per hour on rough terrain. And do it few times

Yeah, but the Soviet tanks were designed to be prepared hull down position, blow off panels does not guarantee crew safety 100% of the time, at best it only increase crew survivability at max 5%.
This is the corners they are willing to cut to get the extremely low profile tank, and what we have is a tank that is easily hidden & hard to shoot.

@@black_thunder2159 not really, the low profile may have helped it before but it's no replacement for quality and it has most certainly been obsolete for a long while.
Also we have weapons and targeting systems that can detect those tanks with thermal imaging. More so our rocket systems are perfectly geared towards taking down their tanks down and are definitely a cost effective way of doing it.
More modern auto-loaders like on the French Lerlec have fixed this issue by adding blast prorection to the auto-loader's ammo carousel. Keep in mind the T72 is from the 70s, the latest T14 (which has other issues preventing mass production) doesn't have this issue either.

Probably because most are trained on original M1 or M1A1 which didn't have the doors added yet, much like wet stowage on Sherman's we had to learn the hard way how to properly stow ammo

Ну тут 50-50, Т-72 больше чем абрамовичей, а по этому ресурс потерь среди машин больше.
Убрав заряжающего и поставив боеукладку прямо под экипажем, советские инженеры гарантировали смерть всего экипажа в случае детонации БК. Экипаж Абрамса или Леопарда в случае детонации отделается лёгким испугом.

Weird then how no western Mbt has a autoloader, maybe because they are trash and autoloaders need more time to load a specific round or is much harder to make reliable than a Loader. The Ammunition Carousel in Autoloaders is also a reason why Russian tanks tend to throw their Turrets and explode in a fire ball when hit below the turret, while NATO tanks have special contraptions that allow the rounds to burn in their Compartment when hit and thus increase survivability
