Markku says while the car is much faster than last year, it is clearly not as fast as the Peugeot 205. (Salonen had won all of the three preceding WRC rallies for Peugeot.) He also remarks that nobody knows how quick the Audi will be, as they were bringing out a new revision of the Quattro. He says he has yet to decide if he will even enter Rally Finland or not; if he has a chance for a podium finish he will go, otherwise not. Results of the rally turned out to be Salonen, Blomqvist, Alén, so the Peugeot and the Audi were faster, but Markku did still get his podium.
well not really, this was around the same time as the tuning revolution in japan where drifting was cool. Also, rally cars had been going sideways since the 50's
Not to mention the car had rear-mid engine. Sure it was regarded having balanced and predictable handling and the weight distribution wasn't that rear biased, but I'm still certain that to drive the thing like that you need car control skills that are simply not from this world.
This orange test car I believe was later sold to AVA Sport, a Kenyan rally team where it was driven by the late Johnny Hellier in the Safari rally and other local events to good effect. The car must have been later sold overseas as it was run locally for just about three seasons. AVA sport won the 1982 African rally championship in a locally prepared and developed Peugeot 504 group B pick up.
@@LinkinPark4Ever1996 This was the first production run. Remember the Evolution version had the roof bubbled up a bit to accomodate the safety helmets of taller drivers like Marku Alen. The one in this clip has the low roof.
Ricordo di averlo visto in Sardegna, nel 1985, durante il Rally Costa Smeralda, faceva le ricognizioni con una 037 rossa, per poi fare l'apripista con la S4
allowing 4wd into the sport was the worst thing possible and made it far too expensive and packed with regulations for privateers to compete in the same class as professional teams. such a tragedy Group B is overrated and just made it worse (even though they're cool). Cars you wouldn't even recognize, the same goes for today. It's not the same folk sport it used to be.
Greatest, most exciting rally driver of all time!
grandissimo Markku...Maximum Attack!!!!
Amazing car..driven by an amazing man!

Che meraviglia, sembra fluttuare sulla strada.

@@tomlepski8306 you can see the double bubble clearly at 0:21
I was pretty sure Roehrl won the 1982 African Rally Championship in an Opel. I think you must've meant 1983.
Flying 037 and another Flying Finn.❤❤❤

such a tragedy

The worst thing made to the sport was to stop making homologation models. The WRC regulations (After 1996) litteraly killed the rally sport
lancia..prisma..i am wrong i guess
Melkoinen tykki
E' una gioia per gli occhi.
Formidabile Allen, ma che macchina!!
Altro che quei cessi chimici su ruote che corrono oggi.
