- Footage of Martini Racing rally team testing their brand new 4WD Group B weapon Lancia Delta S4 for first time on snow near Rovaniemi (Lapland Finland) with rally legend Markku Alén behind the wheel. The test took place two weeks after the 1985 Lombard RAC Rally where the S4 had made its WRC debut - and took a 1-2 victory right away thanks to Henri Toivonen and Alén. Despite the win in the debut event there was still a lot of work to be done and tested in Lapland, since the handling and setup of the monster car were far from complete.

I have it on DVD only, but yeah they had a speedtrap where the Delta S4 was MUCH faster than any other car, 205T16 or Quattro S1 didn’t stand a chance
This is why Lancia were always ahead of the field. Not resting on their laurels from a recent victory, but continuing to develop the car.
Such a sharp contrast from the clowns at Ford M-Sport who think a multi-storey office block building is required in the service park, when your cars aren't competitive.

Exactly 28 years later.... Group B has died, Henri Toivonen has died, RALLY has died.... Please bring me back to these days.... THOSE WERE THE DAYS DAYS :)

A 34 anni di distanza fa ancora accapponare la pelle, non c'è niente di paragonabile in questo momento, neanche le WRC plus, nemmeno il rombo. Eppoi Alen ci metteva l'anima anche nei test, si calava nel ruolo, entrava in trance agonistica e non dava confidenza a nessuno fintanto che durava il test o la prova speciale. Maximum attack.

All Group B Lancia cars were all built for one thing - going as fast as possible between two points - of course we will never know the real horsepower that these cars developed but I can say this - it was way more than what they claimed. This was the era of real fast racing, not like the boring stuff of today.

@Garethjames987 Somewhere in the municipality of Rovaniemi, but no idea about the exact place. Markku mentions in the video that they come there because the preparations in the test place work like a charm and that they have tested there before and will test there in the future as well - so I assume they tested the other Lancia cars there as well before and after this 1985 visit.

Markku Alén etait un très bon pilote dans les années 80, un des fer de lance du Martini Racing rallye celui qui a contribué au succès de la Lancia Delta S4 en fin de saison 85.
La saison 86 était devenu celle de la confirmation pour cette machine à gagner qui était la Lancia Delta S4 voir HF

la fanaleria in teoria ci sarebbe, è stata brutalmente segata, forse avevano dei problemi di accumulo neve! Ho notato che al minuto 3:07, ci sono due terminali affiancati nello scarico lato guida, invece che sovrapposti.A pensarci, in un'intervista Biasion fece notare la vicinanza del serbatoio ai collettori di scarico subito dietro i sedili dell'auto (infatti quando Toivonen uscì di strada, la macchina esplose subito)...l'unico dubbio è sul perchè si muove!!!! Semmai lo chiedo a Volta!! =)
@amjayes2 Then I think I might know! Most likely on the military heavy firing range/exercise range that runs for about 40km alongside the road from Rovaniemi to Kemijärvi!

@giacomegia anche questa ha due tubi di scarico sul retro come tutte le S4! Non credo si tratti neanche di uno sfiato, ma piuttosto dell'imbocco del serbatoio!

Credo che il tubo serva a sfogare le sovrapressioni di volumex e turbo in rilascio ; penso da lì esca solo aria compressa.

@flavioricci1989 Quello scarico sul lato guida, che si vede al secondo 35, probabilmente era solo ancora un prototipo, avranno sperimentando una nuova soluzione che non è andata in porto! Prima di questo video non lo avevo mai notato, anche perchè in quelle ufficiali ne ho sempre visto 2 e tutte e 2 sul retro, sinitra sempre lato guida! Nel RAC '85 (debutto ufficiale) la S4 sembrava normale, come tutte le altre S4 che hanno corso la stagione '86!

@flavioricci1989 Poi riguardandolo bene, e guardando delle immagini,ne ha 3 di scarichi, 2 sul lato guida (1 nascosto quando chiudono il cofano motore nelle versioni definitive) e uno sulla destra.
Probabilmente è proprio una scarico quello sul fianco, poi nelle versioni definitive messo dietro!
Perchè su questo video non c'è neanche la parte dove ci dovrebbe stare la fanaleria posteriore, e si vedono solo 2 scarichi, non appunto 3, capito quello che voglio dire? :) parte 2
Uno è lo scarico, quello di fianco è lo scarico delle sovrapressioni del turbo,ed il terzo, quello "scatoco nascosto" é lo sfogo di una valvola pneumatica serve per far sfogare il volumex ad alti regimi in quanto veniva escluso sopra un certo numero di giri. So che il tuo commento è di otto anni fa,ma non è mai troppo tardi!
