Been doing this routine for a couple of days and can legitimately see some improvement, I had already achieved my splits before finding this video but it was still hard for me to drop down into them. These stretches however have made it 10x less painful in only a few days.
The only people I've seen with such control over all their muscles are ballet dancers. This is far beyond what I thought the body was capable of doing. BUT, it IS inspirational and motivating. I'm 78 and it's been half a century since I practiced Goju-Ryu. Even then, I was nowhere near that flexible. I'm going through a second childhood and revisiting some of those stretching activities to minimize body pains that come from the muscles, tendons and ligaments tightening up with age and disuse.
I think this is the most holistic approach to splits i have seen in a long time. I am trying to get my splits before 40 and i was following similar exercises. Thanks to you i will incorporate some missing elements.

This is an update. So I followed your instructions and incorporated all the dynamic, static and other type of stretches that you showed. I couldn't believe it when I went into the split. I was maybe 10 inches from the floor before and just with your guidance I went as close as 3 inches from the floor. Awesome thanks again, I be never been as close!!!Very appreciative!!!

Best thing I've ever done for splits is to practice them with my feet in gymnastic rings and using the inner thigh to come back up. Really got into every little muscle involved!
Thanks for the video. After 35 years in the martial arts [TKD, Shotokan karate and Aikido], I was NEVER able to achieve a full side split or even come close to doing so. My problem was that I would herniate! I have sustained numerous hernias in my time all as a result of trying to improve my stretch. I got to a point where I could to a side kick to my own head height and that was good enough to get my through my various gradings. It always amazes me when I see guys performing these extreme stretches without tearing holes in their abdominal walls!!
Everyone remember to BREAK A SWEAT before stretching ! Jumping jacks, skipping rope, biking, running, walking, weight training or some other form of cardio for 15 minutes.
Actually, don't ever jump or run or do any cardio without streching first. Streching is always FIRST, then cardio after, doing cardio without streching is pure irresponsibillity.. .
To the middle age martial artist, The reduction of flexibility is the biggest obstacle to performing the movement in forms and sparring. I was very very flexible but getting stiffer as gaining ages. I do many different types of exercise to maintain flexibility. I learned from this video some specific methods that I have never done. Thank you so much for your posting. I will try your ways.

that is by far the most overlooked point. I recommend doing all the stretching after a 40 min jogging, not only it will be easier but your risks of injury goes to zero.
For the beginning stretches I do these in the morning on the floor. it offers more control and allows you to isolate and adjust velocity accordingly. Take it slow, flexibility is a process, not so much an endgame
very simple explanation is focus on stretch and massage postrial chain muscles and do mobilization for all the joint including hips, knee .ankle. He explained very clear and very appreciated.
3 sessions in with the first few basic exercises from this video and I'm already getting very high level results. I couldn't stretch beyond about 45 degree angle between my legs. Now I can go upto 60. More to come slowly. The journey is long but I love these exercizes
Stephen Wonderboy Thompson have a great advice on stretching: 3xT's which means Temperature, Tension, Time in that particular order. First you have to be warmed up then stretch and remember on holding your stretches for some time. Other than that thank you for the video Simon, it's really helpful.
This is not to discredit Stephen Thompson but I can tell you this, the order is not actually correct & is not his advice, that advice is over 50 years old. Who am I, just a gymnast who did it for 15 plus years. We used Time, Temperature, Tension. This is where people get everything wrong, It doesn't matter if they are famous athletes because they make mistakes also. 1) People seem to think "Time" just encapsulates the time you spend stretching, yes, part of it does, however, it also refers to the time of day you stretch which is just as important. The body creates internal markers & these markers are picked up by the subconscious mind & programmed deeply in repetition "You can't outdo the subconscious mind". So for example, if you achieve the splits at night time & then you try that in the day, you will probably find that really challenging. It's not that you wouldn't be able to do it, it's just that you have created an internal subconscious marker associated with the splits for that night time progression. 2) This is the other mistake people make. Temperature doesn't just mean your body. Temperature also refers to the environment you are in, ie, the room indoors or outdoors. We use to do things like sitting on radiators for extra warmth before the room warmed up properly. The room temperature is also a subconscious marker that your body will remember. You can spend ample time warming up & do the splits in a cold room but, I assure you, any slight nip in the air will make you tense up real quickly & lead to spasms, you can't fight against a natural element that is greater than you. If the subconscious is programmed for a warm environment for your splits it will act upon that only & resist when it's not. 3) Tension can mean various things. It can mean the amount of time you hold the stretch as suggested. It can also mean when you add say weighted assistance. On the other hand, it can mean are you tense before you even stretch, some people just cannot relax at all the whole body is tense, this is even without stretching. So, tension as a whole has a few meanings. Great people to check out are Pavel Tsatsouline who has deep knowledge of stretching & training spanning over 30 years & also Thomas Kurz. They both pioneered stretching throughout the 80's & 90's. Simon has an excellent degree of flexibility & not just that, his hips & hip flexors are very well developed. When you can hold your knee up real high like Simon does & lockout, then bring it back in slowly you have reached that power level. Kicking fast & high can create an illusion of flexibility, but, you do that slowly with control, now that's a whole different level.
I've trained all that for years and still can't do the splits, while my homie could do it after few months, basically. The hips won't allow this move to anyone. Sometimes the rotation is blocked by the hip structure. But if you move to Muay Thai it may be a healthier choice due to a dominance of lower kicks and punches. Hi it is true some men can't do splits, but honestly I've seen even older men continue to make progress after martial arts or yoga for years. My dad took up taekwondo in his 50s & he has gotten to the split (although, it's a side split not the center split which we call straddle). As dumb as it may sound, a lot of stretching is mental bc you need to be stretching the right muscles & turning the joints the right way. To do a split requires flexibility in quads, hams, calves, hips, back & even feet. All the joints have to be moving right. Try to visualize yourself doing the splits & stretch groin separately doing clamshell, etc., & trying to rotate the hip. Good luck

Never was sitting on the twine. All that I can was raise my leg to the chair level. And once I spent a whole year trying to sit on the twine. Every day I did different exercises for at least one hour. And as a result, I raise my leg just above the table.
I'm a Jeet kune do man and also following take kwun do stretching ...Jeet kune do man do not criticed any styles...but gaining more effective ideas from others ...
There is no easy way. You put in work and stretch daily. Pushing yourself a bit further each day or every few days. Persistence is the key. Some are naturally less flexible. Some are naturally more and so it varies from person to person. Just work at it steady and soon enough you will be able to do it.

The best thing about ITF techniques is that due to the nature of movements being based on scientific verified agility, you can kick easily as high as you can stretch, which means that a head kick can be achieved even with your stretches being around 120-140 degrees...
Splitting easy who below 45 ages but very difficult to do above 50s . Now I'm 59 but regular practicing some times make me spinals feeling uneasy. Take care and keep doing exercise
Im doing Shaolin Kung Fu, and they say no pain no gain, and streching pain is a different pain. So actually you resist the pain, breath calmly, relax your stretching and stretch more until you cant relax, then hold in this position at least for 30sec. If you do it everyday you get ir faster.

My hips like to pop when I'm doing the stretches around 10:30, really anything involving a hip rotation, like a crescent kick. Is this something anyone else experiences, and should I be concerned about it?
It's not impossible. The muscles of normal people are completely capable of doing full splits. It is normally the brain that has been trained to impose limits preventing further muscle movement. If I could knock you unconscious (or catch you in a deep sleep), I could move your legs into the full splits position without any injury to your body because your brain's muscle memory isn't active while unconscious. The exercises taught here do a good job of training your brain to allow more movement for the purposes of splits. Being focused and relaxed will go a long way to retraining your muscle memory to move further. So keep training, keep relaxed, and good luck.
@buzz magister My theory comes from Soviet Russian knowledge of human physiology. I learned it from a book, Relax into Stretch by Pavel Tsatsouline. Conventional stretching attempts to literally elongate your tissues, which is dangerous and ineffective. Pavel teaches a different way to stretch, the way of reprogramming the central nervous system to relax its reflex in muscle movement; your central nervous system is the cultprit that is restricting flexibility. The good news is that you can retrain your nervous system and see instant results relating to increased flexibility. For me, it took one week of following Pavel's theory and method to reach the goal of relaxing into full splits. When I started, I had terrible leg flexibility just like the rest of western society. My motivation for leg flexibility is to buy a big motorcycle, the BMW F850GS. This would have been too unwieldy for me to operate with stiff, inflexible legs.

How often? How much heal time? I have two adult students that are very strong but i have not been able to help them become more flexible. I cannot spend the whole class working with them and will be directing them to this video.
Interesting, I had come up with most of these stretches on my own as no one was teaching these, I also happened to be one of the more flexible people in my schools. Guess I was doing some things right lol
tl ; dr - warm up and then just do a split. jokes aside I greatly appreciate the segment regarding the feet. Mine are in a terrible condition and everything I can do to strengthen them and make them more flexible helps.
I go down pretty smooth, but my knees suffered a ligament injury few weeks back, so going to my full potential puts pressure in my knees.. So I'm kinda stuck Otherwise, the instructions were very helpful, thank you so much!

There is no easy way. You put in work and stretch daily. Pushing yourself a bit further each day or every few days. Persistence is the key.
Some are naturally less flexible. Some are naturally more and so it varies from person to person. Just work at it steady and soon enough you will be able to do it.

I’ve always wanted to start for a long time and now I’m 14 and I’ve started like 3 months ago and I never knew how to do the splits never knew how to literally kick 😭 but it gets better. Practice everyday
I'm practicing since my parents are gonna sign me up to taekwondo which yum really excited about. My dad was a black belt 3 stripes and he's my idol in this one. Thing is, I'm no flexible at all.
same! i know this was like 7 months ago, but it wasn’t as bad as i thought lol. i’m not flexible as well, but the stretches aren’t very hard. (atleast to me) and when you get used to it, it’s cool ig lol. (btw, cool name :)) )

This are the things they teach as to do split but sometimes there's a time where we were forced to do split which hurt
After doing the push open legs my left leg ended up in very injury
The best thing about ITF techniques is that due to the nature of movements being based on scientific verified agility, you can kick easily as high as you can stretch, which means that a head kick can be achieved even with your stretches being around 120-140 degrees...
also less use of force for powerful kicks like I push people backwards while fighting but in real life I'm so weak lmao

Splitting easy who below 45 ages but very difficult to do above 50s .
Now I'm 59 but regular practicing some times make me spinals feeling uneasy.

Im doing Shaolin Kung Fu, and they say no pain no gain, and streching pain is a different pain. So actually you resist the pain, breath calmly, relax your stretching and stretch more until you cant relax, then hold in this position at least for 30sec. If you do it everyday you get ir faster.

My hips like to pop when I'm doing the stretches around 10:30, really anything involving a hip rotation, like a crescent kick. Is this something anyone else experiences, and should I be concerned about it?
If it hurts - yes, stop, if it doesnt - no

It still seems almost impossible to get to that level.
It's not impossible. The muscles of normal people are completely capable of doing full splits. It is normally the brain that has been trained to impose limits preventing further muscle movement. If I could knock you unconscious (or catch you in a deep sleep), I could move your legs into the full splits position without any injury to your body because your brain's muscle memory isn't active while unconscious. The exercises taught here do a good job of training your brain to allow more movement for the purposes of splits. Being focused and relaxed will go a long way to retraining your muscle memory to move further. So keep training, keep relaxed, and good luck.
@buzz magister My theory comes from Soviet Russian knowledge of human physiology. I learned it from a book, Relax into Stretch by Pavel Tsatsouline. Conventional stretching attempts to literally elongate your tissues, which is dangerous and ineffective. Pavel teaches a different way to stretch, the way of reprogramming the central nervous system to relax its reflex in muscle movement; your central nervous system is the cultprit that is restricting flexibility. The good news is that you can retrain your nervous system and see instant results relating to increased flexibility.
For me, it took one week of following Pavel's theory and method to reach the goal of relaxing into full splits. When I started, I had terrible leg flexibility just like the rest of western society. My motivation for leg flexibility is to buy a big motorcycle, the BMW F850GS. This would have been too unwieldy for me to operate with stiff, inflexible legs.

simple relatively speaking I suppose. I am publishing a boiled down version with only 7 stretches to memorize.
like anything it takes time an patience but you should see tangible progress within a few sessions.
For the first exercise in the tkd I do that’s what white belts have to do, I train at the itfa HQ in Sydney NSW
How often? How much heal time? I have two adult students that are very strong but i have not been able to help them become more flexible. I cannot spend the whole class working with them and will be directing them to this video.

Interesting, I had come up with most of these stretches on my own as no one was teaching these, I also happened to be one of the more flexible people in my schools. Guess I was doing some things right lol
tl ; dr - warm up and then just do a split.
jokes aside I greatly appreciate the segment regarding the feet. Mine are in a terrible condition and everything I can do to strengthen them and make them more flexible helps.

I go down pretty smooth, but my knees suffered a ligament injury few weeks back, so going to my full potential puts pressure in my knees.. So I'm kinda stuck
