- Vagaband is an anarcho-punk documentary about a small group of traveling punk and folk musicians squatting in Pittsburgh. Contains footage of the EZLN and the uprising in San Salvador Atenco, Mexico. This short documentary covers the ideals of the anarcho-punk movement around Pittsburg in the 2000s.
From the creator:
"I wanted to make something about punk activism and its connections to the global movement for justice and democracy. I had a few tapes from a trip to the Zapatista territories in 1998 and a 2002 trip to both the Zapatista territories and San Salvador Atenco. In 2003, I recorded interviews with some of my travel companions in Pittsburgh. My representational strategy was largely decided by access. In order to complete the documentary I focused on the "Vagabond Collective." The story of the Zapatistas is much better told by the people of Chiapas. I suggest looking at videos available from the Chiapas Media Project to hear their voices."

Hearing that guy talk about getting to Europe like he would have then escaped whatever he was running from was interesting. As a European that grew up in England im still dreaming about escaping to America. The grass is always greener on the other side.
Your not missing much, i promise you. The underground is pretty much dead and gone.
All thats left are those with power, and everyone else.
Hi. I am joy the violinist here. I currently live in Savannah and do tt livestreams under the name dustyjoylife. It’s been 20 yrs and much has changed for everyone. I would love to do an update when I have time but everyone is alive currently and doing generally well. Much cheers!
It would be great to find them now and tell us about their lives after all these years

@@Catthepunknot dead. All alive. I am joy. Hi. Ask me anything.
Did y'all mean folk punk
That also slaps tho
wow. Great stuff
was this camp near or part of landslide?
Yes. It was prior to landslide times. During centro del Mundo days. In the woods above past the dead end.
Does anyone know how to contact any of these people? Id love to talk to them and see where theyre at today
Hi. I’m joy. Ask me anything.
Back in 97, the eureka band Saké went to mex for Zapatista visit, anybody seen them or know about the band?
What would Emma Goldman think?
Good question
I think she'd love it
Hi it’s joy. Emma once played piano loudly to cover the sound of the tunnel digging to escape Berkman from the Prison in Pgh for stabbing Frick for the whole Pinkerton thing and general antiworker attitudes! Wild!
"if i cant dance its not my revolution"
weird how punk is defined by different generations ha ha
That's what makes it so punk
Everything is equally weird in that regard
what happened to this place?
Seems idyllic ,but I can't live without two showers a day.Awesome people and good musicians, though.
You'd hate to be an anarchist traveler than, it's exactly like this but hopping freight trains around the country, 😂 you get pretty dirty.
Hi this is joy. I doubt we showered twice a month back then. Nowadays I also couldn’t image not showering. But mainly I do it for mental health cleansing hahahaha.

They are like the old hippie commune lifestyle. Nothing new
Anarcho punks. But you are right. They didnt innovate, and became extinct.
The future is cyber punk, more broad, less militaristic and close minded. and more based around the reality of aesthetic.
Punks never wanted to admit, they do it for fashion. That culture and life style, are down the road from fashion.
So embrace style over substance, and advance mankind forward.
Always forward.
Style is not forward motion. Especially that boring cyberpunk shite. All that plastic shit is too sticky to wear and has nothing to do with anarachism or punk. @@NEUR0MANCER_
@@FunkyLittlePoptart haha plastic? Wtf are you even talking about? Ever heard of tech wear? What about the fact that most cyber punk fashion stylings, are based around punk rock fashion?
And nothing to do with it? Clearly, you have no clue what i am even talking about. Cyber punk was coined, with that name because of its themes of anti gov and anti control anti corporatist, and anti fascist ideology.
While the posers like you probably buy your tech, cyber punk is a step forward in technological piracy, and anti technocratic control, the kind forced on us by youtube, and facebook. So in reality, cyber punk is fighting the battles punks are way behind in. While they are busy not doing shit. HAckers bring down conglomerates.
The very center of the story that started cyber punk subculture is about a protagonist who goes up against a system of control and oppression then comes out on top. Just the origins for the sub culture are differnt then punk. While punk was born out of 77 punk rock bands, cyber punk was born around the culture built around that budding ideology back when it was still a threat. Today punks are no longer a threat to power. Most of the punks that stood for something back in the day, are in antifa fighting FOR fascism. While hacker culture, is the threat. While people like me, are the threat now. Thats why you have feds targeting americans now, and hacker groups. BEcause punk is a not a threat. Cyber punk IS.
So seems you are clueless to the themes and their connection to punk.
And im not saying, punks future is cyber punk. Im saying counter cultures future is hacker ideology, and cyber punk styles, and music. Since it already IS.
I was anarcho punk for half my life. and i found more acceptance, and less hypocrisy in cyber punk, that is more broad in its appeal, and less based in a strict uniform for admittance. Since anything or anyone can be cyber punk. And its completely uniting, not dividing.
Cyber punks can be cops, military, bikers, mechanics, hackers, gamers. and it promotes ideas that originated in OG 80s punk rock ideology. Like anti authoratarianism.
Plastic, wtf, ive never worn anything plastic in my life. In fact, I still use aspects of my old punk rock fashion, just like 80s punk FASHION, cause thats what it is whether you like it or not, Was the core fashion and ideology of cyber punk. Like terminator, and robocop.
Cyber punk isnt plastic. Its chrome metal grease and fuel.
And it does more to fight power, then punks have ever done, sitting around bitching in the woods, getting fucked up.
Cyber punk is the future. And it encompasses punk. Accept it? Dont? I really dont care. If you are not cyber punk counter culture in 2024. You are IRELEVANT.
blah blah blah. You started with saying that everything's about FASHION. Cyberpunk fashion is dumb little wannabe goth kids in plastic pants. You're moving the goalposts because you failed to correctly express your viewpoint.
Cyberpunk cannot change the world because of its dependence on tech. All your precious computers are built on slave labour because every one contains rare minerals mined by people who are being exploited. There is no tech without somebody dying on the way. When you talk about anarchism, you appear to mean the freedom for middle class white dudes who can't get a date to sit around bitching in forums. You're not changing the world, you're playing dress up. You ain't fighting shit. As the saying goes, the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house. But whatever. I don't care about you either. Enjoy your little script kiddie jerk off fantasy. Your rebellion goes as far as Larry and Sergei will let you go.@@NEUR0MANCER_
Oh, right. One more thing I forgot. TECH WEAR IS PLASTIC., you condescending twit. It's ALL synthetic, made from petroleum byproducts. Thus, it's non-biodegradable, nonrecyclable PLASTIC. Maybe try leaving your mom's basement once in a while. @@NEUR0MANCER_
Anarchy is your self
I take it you haven't actually read what anarchism is, anarchists are mainly Libertarian Socialist and Libertarian Communist, and a smaller portion are Anarcho Individualists. The term Anarchism derived from a clearly defined European social movement and was coined by Pierre Joseph Proudon.
