  • Sunbrella Marine Canvas is comfortable and lasts a long time; however, it does get nasty dirty and is hard to clean if you don’t know what you’re doing. Being full time cruisers in the tropics, we’ve learned a trick or two to make cleaning your Sunbrella Canvas easier and more successful. We show you the products you need (simple ones that you already have on board) and the process to go through to eliminate mold, dirt, mildew, grease stains and anything else that is making your cushions look terrible!
2 STEP CLEANING PROCESS - entire process, not counting wait time, takes about 15 minutes per cushion.
    Step 1
Outside in the sun, thoroughly wet cushions with water and spray on Sunbrella Recommend Cleaning Formula (link below) while gently scrubbing with a medium stiffness bristle dish brush. Let sit in the sun for 15+ minutes while the chemical works and you start work on other cushions.
I recommend the following homemade cleaning solution which I believe is an improvement on Sunbrella’s suggested cleaning solution - see link below.
Blown Away’s MARINE CANVAS CLEANING SOLUTION - 1 Gallon
    1/4 cup Dawn Dishwashing Liquid
1 cup common household chlorine bleach - not oxygenated bleach
1/4 cup concentrated degreaser such as Simple Green or Fabululoso
    Water
    Sunbrella Cleaning Formula: www.sunbrella....
Step 2 - here’s the trick to tackling the tough stains - if necessary
Wash off dirt from step 1 cushion process. Next spray Blown Away Special Touch Up Formula Recipe (see below) on remaining tough mildew, dirt and grease stains and rub in with a brush and let sit in the sun for 15+ minutes. Rinse with fresh, clean water.
Blown Away Special Touch Up Formula Recipe
    50% Common Household Chlorinated Bleach
    45% Water
5% Concentrated Full Strength Degreaser such as Simple Green or Fabuloso

    NEW TO OUR CHANNEL?
We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our NEW life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we have very little sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia.
So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too!
As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Hopefully, you will be as BLOWN AWAY from watching, as we are in experiencing and producing our adventures!

This worked absolutely amazingly. After the first pass with the Sunbrella prescribed method, I was doubtful. But thanks to your urging I tried with the 50/50 water-chorine solution (basically just doubled up whatever solution I had left from the first pass with chloring). The result was incredible. I looked and swore they were lighter and the color had worn, but when I compared the bleached stuff with a good bit of fabric that I didn't have to clean it was EXACTLY THE SAME! I couldn't believe my eyes, you're a king!
Sidenote: Whatever thread was used to lockstitch my fabric, it was apparently not highly UV resistant. The old stitching that was exposed to the sun more-or-less dissolved with the chlorine and moderate scrubbing. The old stitching that was NOT exposed to the sun it was perfectly fine. For replacement thread I am using Coats & Clark Eloflex (Polybutylene Terephthalate, or PBT) thread doubled up on itself for extra strength. PBT thread is extra flexible/stretchy, extra UV resistant, and extra heat resistant. Would recommend.

Thank you for your kind words. So glad to help make this once before dreaded task more fruitful! Stay tuned for a follow up which shows how to do easy touch ups with minimal water usage. I feel your pain with the thread situation. A job is as good as its weakest link and it infuriates me when people chinzed on thread just to make a few more bucks. This is especially horrible with sails because of their expense and constant exposure to the sun. We paid $80 extra for forever thread for our dinghy chaps.

Great info. I’m a fan of our Sunbrella but worry about harsh cleaning solutions degrading the thread used to sew it.
Also, Sunbrella recently discontinued the particular color our boat is outfitted in. I suggest buying a reasonable amount to keep on hand for the inevitable repairs.

Thank you!! If we had to do it over again, we probably would not use Sunbrella due to how much work it is to keep it clean. And, you are right, we don't know the affect of the harsh cleaning solutions on the thread...though in 3 years, we have not seen any degradation. Thanks for the tip of having extra on board. We didn't even think of that!!

Thank you from Seascape! I just tackled the mold on our Sunbrella pillows using your techniques, and it made a world of difference!

Sometimes, I think the WFS '82 class was time shifted to the wrong century. Congo bush pilots; catamaran world circumnavigators; et al. Love catching up on your latest travels and self-help videos. Look forward to the next update.

Not very nature friendly. You can use vinegar and bakingsoda insted.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I wish vinegar and baking soda worked. That would be much better!
