  • Have a non-skid boat deck that never seems to get clean?
    In this tutorial I'll show you how to clean, compound and seal your non-skid. Taking the time to do this is extremely beneficial. These simple steps will cut your clean up time by more than half!
    WAXING NON SKID WILL NOT MAKE THE DECK SLIPPERY!!!
    Waxed non skid being slippery is simply not true. When I say non skid, I'm talking about the diamond patterned non skid found on most boats. It's the pattern that keeps it from being slippery. Not having a sealed surface is just asking for drift and grim to stain the surface. After following the steps in this video you will on your way to not worrying about annoying deck stains!

    Just want to thank you for taking the tine to post this video. I started this process yesterday on my 26' boat, will finish today and your technique works great. Everything looks better than new. This should make cleanup after an outing alot easier. No more blackstreaks or stains anywhere.

    Excellent How-To video! I use the Non-Skid Deck Cleaner as well and like you say, "A little goes a long way" and that's why I pour some in a spray bottle or pump. I get WAYYY more use from one bottle.

    This is awesome. I actually watched the whole thing which I rarely do. I'm going to try this on my boat. Just bought a new one and our first trip out made it all dirty and I can't get it off. I was pretty upset and disappointed but now I got hope lol. This is what we need to do and I'm going to get this done. YAY! Thank so much for this info.

    Hey Kyle, I have to admit the brush cam really won me over! I thought, this guy is serious about getting his boat clean. Great video and instructions. I'm hopping over to Amazon to put in an order. Bought a new Sea Pro in Dec 2019, love my boat. It's not hard to clean but every trip, I don't care how careful I am it gets dirty. One trout or Spot tail in the boat does the trick. Thanks again JT

    enjoyed your video, no BS just to the point with a little humor thrown in. I live on the SC coast and a a 19 ft skiff that im crazy about keeping clean, I knew there had to be a quicker way, nothing worse than spending a day on the water and THEN having to spend the rest of the day into the evening cleaning my boat. Nothing like anchor mud and fish blood to pretty up a boat! Not to mention the stains it leaves, Ive always used bleach after washing it down but still had stains. Im going to try to the star brite, I already the exact polisher (I also do paint & body work) along with Maguire's and see how it work. just quick clarification, compound originally is used as a cleaner not a sealer so are saying the compound will seal the surface from dirt or at least repel it? thanks for the video .

    Great video, this is exactly how I do it also, starbrite cleaner then compound with HF dual action using shurehold brush attachment. But I use a Marine 31 One step heavy cut cleaner wax. it cuts like heavy compound but finished out to a nice shine and waxes at the same time to eliminate the Pro polish step. Ive used pro polish before when waxing hulls but i wasnt overly impressed. if im going to do a two step process id use a compound but my wax of choice is meguiars premium flagship wax, goes on very easy and wipes off effortlessly.

    I work for CNB here in France as a Finisher. It's a Luxury boat construction firm and I'm working on the seventy7 and seventy8 models (largest and longest).
    I just wanted to let you know that if you buff / polish non-skid areas on your boat, they lose their "grit" (ability to stop you from skidding on it). I'd suggest you ask people getting on your boat to either have special shoes or go bare-feet when on the boat, and then cleanup is as simple as using a pressure washer with just warm water or acetone (or another product you think works).
    Also, waxing gelcoat makes it slippery. Which is why we wax molds before gelcoating them.

    • @Captkylejohnson
      @Captkylejohnson  5 лет назад +1

      P5ykoOHD I agree for other kinds of non skid. This diamond pattern is not slippery after doing this. It’s the pattern itself that makes it non skid. I’ll do a video soon to show that’s it’s not slippery after waxing. I can’t speak for any other type of non skid though. I’m sure other types would be insanely slippery.

At 11:40 and 13:10 I “think” you talk about adding a pro polish? I think I am confused or maybe I am just confused on what the best product to use?

    I guess I was led wrong after I bought my boat in 2013. I was told to use the StarBrite every time we clean the boat, which is after every time I use it. I've had it covered in the back yard through the winter and uncovered it this past weekend. The first thing I noticed was the smell of cat pee (or maybe squirrel). I thought I had it sealed up but apparently not. I knew I could get the smell out, but I've got a long orange streak running from the console back to the transom. I took the batteries out early last fall to replace them. I bought the new batteries but didn't install them until this weekend. So no batteries in place for 4 months. Starbrite wouldn't take up the orange streak nor the gray spots right in front of the console (the batteries sit right under the steering wheel/console. Sorry for the long story, but do you know what might get rid of that orange streak and the gray patches? Starbrite didn't phase them.

    a really good reason to have the deck ''tread pattern'' in truck bed liner, in a darker color. did that on my old glass boat and wow...no maintenance! And no more blinding white interior.

      Capt Dave's Sport Fishing very interesting! I rarely ever fish barefoot, but how is it on bare feet?

      @@Captkylejohnson the stuff I had was rubbery, and I never not have shoes on, but it wasn't that rough. throw a 12 oz. bank sinker and miss? the sinker bounced. plus, my ole 23' MayCraft was not a liner boat. So it sound deadened the boat, too. Then, I got really smart, and had a aluminum 26 footer built, that came with Aircraft carrier non-skid deck paint. Now, I do NO hull maintenance, other than spray off the deck. NO more stark white, getting dirty, problems for me. Plus, I'm not trying to look cool. it's a different ''life style'', fishing a big alloy boat. no wax, buffing...nothing! But, ya gotta find the right guy to scuff up your deck, clean it, mask out a tread pattern, and spray the right stuff. My ole boat sold immediately after 10 years of hard daily use. Because it looked great inside. Used a light tan bed liner.

    Hey Kyle if it's a nonskid deck won't waxing it make it slippery when wet ?

    • @Captkylejohnson
      @Captkylejohnson  5 лет назад +4

      Hooked-n-Rolling Offshore 2009 not if it’s the diamond raised pattern like shown in the video. I can’t speak for any other style of non skid, but mine is not slippery after doing this. I’m actually in the process of ceramic coating it now. I’ll have a video up soon and demonstrate that it’s not slippery.

      David Bate I used the soft and it worked great!

    Hey Kyle, you also mentioned an application of ceramic coating on the non skid. How did this work? Worth it?

    • @Captkylejohnson
      @Captkylejohnson  4 года назад

      Jason Beard it didn’t last that long honestly, but I was in a rush and only had time to do one coat. Only did one coat of ceramic on my hull and inside and it last a solid 9 months with real world use and heavy fishing. The ceramic lasted maybe 4 months on the nonskid.

    3M perfect it compound and wax might work a bit better over the ultimate compound. You said not to use a paste wax? I know the 3M paste waxes last a very long time.

    • @Captkylejohnson
      @Captkylejohnson  5 лет назад

      I agree, I just had the ultimate compound laying around and it spread very easy. Only reason I said that about paste wax is because I tried it, and it was very hard to spread. It was also a pain to buff off. The polymer based waxes are just a lot easier to work with.

      Kyle Johnson Fishing sweet well thanks for the reply. I just purchased a trophy that someone neglected pretty bad. I’ve used the Starbright deck cleaner but unfortunately I think I may have to use bleach soft scrub once to get it back to white. Too afraid to use the acid based products.

    A waxed nonskid will bust your ass..
    However you never applied wax or a sealer
    Polish is shine not protection
    Wax is protection not shine
    You could follow up with a dupont sealer or a wax but you will slip and slide
    When you polish gelcoat and dont seal it, oxidation will begin that hour, immediately.
    As small as your boat is, you should be able to take off all marks and scuffs in non skid with Magic erasers.
    great video, love boats (Hit The Like)

    • @Captkylejohnson
      @Captkylejohnson  4 года назад +1

      Shurhold Pro polish is actually a sealer and thats what I used for the "wax." It surprising it's very slippery after doing this. Is it more slick? Yes, but not too bad. You are correct about using actual polish. You will bust your ass if you do that!

    Did you use the same brush to compound and Polish? If so, what did you use to clean the brush? Last, how often do you repeat this process? Once a season? Thanks. Great video.

    • @Captkylejohnson
      @Captkylejohnson  5 лет назад +2

      Tommy Liu yes, I used the same brush. I took the brush off polisher and cleaned it in a bucket of water with dawn soap. It got all the compound off. It all depends on the sealant (or wax) you used and how often you use your boat. This was the longest lasting I found before ceramic coating. Ceramic coating very easy to apply and outlast anything else I’ve used so far. Putting up a video very soon about DIY ceramic coat.

    • @Captkylejohnson

      You can use any type of compound, and you only need to use one. The 3m works great, but it can be a pain and makes a big mess on nonskid.
