I have enjoyed your videos for a couple of years now, and finally I must comment. This stuff is incredible! Miraculous! I had two broken head bolts drilled out last year and the metal shavings from the work laid in my boat. When it came back from repair I had a rusty mess. Just today I cleaned it all up so effortlessly. Thank you for being so kind to share your knowledge.
A few screws rusted and stained the inside of the trunk on my Corvette. Yes, fiberglass. Couldn't remove the stains for all the tea in China. Watched your video then went into the shed and pulled out a gallon of Goof Off that sat on the shelf since my children were toddlers. Stains are gone like magic. Thanks for posting.
I was checking out HD recently and found many of the cleaners have hydrochloric acid. Also, any screw that is 18-8 or 304 grade stainless steel will corrode in salt water. Grade 316, which is marine grade, has molybdenum which protects against salts/chloride. Wouldn’t be surprised if Grade 304 is often used when not appropriate. .
Navy Jelly. 3m product. 6:58 Stone, Metal, Fiberglass.... Set it and rinse, your good. Put that on the metal surfaces, then spray the goof off on everything els. A100 every time.
I saw others using toilet bowl cleaner for this too. It worked great inside my plastic swingback cooler seat but not so well inside my fiberglass livewell. I'll give this stuff a shot too.
For polishing rusty chrome try a crumbled up ball of aluminum foil and some chrome polish. Works wonders for removing rust. And I doubt it’ll leave little bits of metal to rust since it’s aluminum. I use that on my Harley
Oxalic acid, or "wood bleach", can be purchased at most paint supply stores (Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, etc) in powdered form for much cheaper than pre-mixed stuff from big box stores. I mix about three or four tablespoons with warm water in a quart sized spray bottle. spray on, let sit for 5 minutes, rinse off. done.
Some of these locations can be permanently fixed by just replacing the part that is corroding (rusting). Or seal the area with some 5200, etc. Also it could be as simple as replacing a screw that is not marine grade 316, which has molybdenum and resists salts/chloride. Grade 8-18 and 304 are not salt resistant and cheaper and mistaken for marine grade.
I was cleaning the bimini posts with steel wool and had the exact same issue with all the steel fibers. I thought I was going crazy lol. Going to try this out!
I know this video is 3yrs old, but RustAid is now $18. There is a cleaner at Dollar Tree called "LA's Totally Awesome All-Purpose Cleaner," at $1.25/ 20 oz. So for $8.75, you can get slightly over a gallon today, 2024. Just FYI! Thanks for all of the videos @Born Again Boating
I just use vinegar takes care of the rust. Also you’re doing all that work and not addressing why it’s rusting. Remove the hardware and bed it in some silicone that way the water can’t get behind it and sit and rust.
I own an aluminum boat. It's a HUGE mistake if you bolt anything onto it with steel hardware. It will rust super fast due to oxidation-reduction chemical reaction. I thought all boaters knew this and boat manufacturers too. Someone fucked up really good to build a boat that rusts that much.
@@mikeries8549 its actually galvanic corrosion. any two dissimilar metal will have a different electron potential between them. it cause ion to move and can help start oxidation and thus rust.
It’s called rust aid and I have been using for a long time. In fact I provided it to a Detailer that was having an issue removing rust. Love your videos.
I want to left a pair of steel pliers on my dashboard for the week! When I went to the marina the following weekend after all that rain there was a huge rush spot on my white gelcoat! I used a product called FSR which stands for fiberglass stain remover! I usually apply it with a foam brush let it sit a few minutes and wipe it off! As for cleaning the stainless I use bronze wool and Flitz aluminum and stainless steel polish! The bronze wool is soft enough that it will not leave any scratches on your hardware! Those are the two easiest and fastest ways to keep your boat looking new, And they require little to no effort!
I thought that the mystery cleaner was actually toilet bowl cleaner! I’ve used that before on waterline and rust stains with excellent results. I have to give the goof off stuff a try. Maybe it will be good to remove the rust on my pavers caused by where the boat trailer sits.
Toilet cleaner is either going to be a strong corrosive base (the chemical opposite of acid) like lye, or something like bleach or Clorox. These are very very bad for metals. And the highly basic solutions will practically dissolve aluminum. In fact some basic toilet cleaners actually have chunks of aluminum in them which is consumed while they slowly neutralize the base.
4 yrs ago I started using Ceramic coating on my boat... no more rust stains, no more pitting, washing it is a breeze and with most of them you can coat everything, chrome, aluminum, plastic, glass, paint and gel coat. Most say it lasts 3-5 yrs but I’ve found it’s more like 2-2.5 yrs.. it will change your life for the better. Definitely school up on how to apply and take care of it and it’s time consuming compared to wax but a lot less physically demanding than applying wax.
Citric acid works for me. Removes rust and limescale from anything without effort. I use it in water filters from a water well too for ferrite and magnesium deposits.
@@tacoclout if it's where you can get to the underside you could always try to grab it with a pair of vice grips and screw it out if not you're probably going to have to try to drill it out and use a larger screw
@@tacoclout If you're going to drill it out use a center punch. You can also use a punch or small chisel to spin it out with a hammer. If it's only in wood / fiberglass it should be easy to do. Do not use any form of heat because fiberglass warps easily.
I work on tugboats and the thing that works best on tugs is something called chem prime but those are work boats and that stuff is really strong so i doubt it would be good for regular boats but it works the best
I need to know how to refurbish the endcaps/joints on the grab rails. The chrome (real chrome, old boat) has bubbled and flaked off. Having them rechromed is very expensive. And really can't remove them to have em powder coated.
@@BornAgainBoating is there a good source that is reasonably priced to find replacements? Trying to weigh my options here. I can make grab rails out of some hardwood. But the age of the boat, doesn't really lean towards wood accents all that well.
I have, if I recall correctly, organic rust in our well. Water comes from the well clear, but as it's exposed to oxygen, it becomes rusty. I have a system that removes most of it and softens the water. However, occasionally someone will flush a toilet while the system regenerates or a power outage might mess up the timers and things get out of synch. My first indication is the toilet water and bowl gets rusty. Once I reset everything and am certain it's good I then go after the rust staining. The product I've found that works the best is Whink Rust Stain Remover. I do use the Goof Off Bathroom stuff for cleaning the shower tile because it has a consistency that's better suited. But that Whink stuff gets stubborn rust stains out much better.
never ceases to amaze me , considering the price tag on some boats,, makes me wonder how they could use cheap ass stainless steel ,,,, Ive been using rust aid for years,,, it is amazing,,, but if they only used quality stainless that would not happen, again, boats are expensive,,,, they should do it
I agree. I have just bought a second hand cruiser and the previous owner fitted snap davits to carry the tender. Problem is the base plates are cheap s/s and it has rusted and stained the swimming platform really badly.
Try car alloy wheel cleaner. NOT the strong acidic stuff, but the more modern detailer fallout remover quality spray gels. I use Gtechniq W6 Iron and Fallout remover. It’s a gel that does not run off or dry too fast ans can be left to dwell then brushed. Note do not let any chemical dry whilst dwelling. Use water mister to prevent this. This works on my rib to get rust stains off white gelcoat.
Its the salt combined with humidity. On inland lake areas you dont see this amount of rust. But the air near the sea is filled with tiny saltwater droplets so its an extremly corrosive environment. The important factor is that the salt will lead to current flowing and speed up the oxidation process.

Impressive. I don't have any rust stains like that from any of my bright work but I'm sure this stuff will work for other simple stains. I've had very good results from Bar Keepers Friend. Thanks again for another great video.

There is a product call “never dull” and it works great to remove rust from the metal.

aluminum bright works pretty good too
Magic erasers work great on anything when cleaning a bout

I don't know about plastic but I restore cast iron skillets and I use white vinegar. Works great and it's cheap!
FSR the same... Naval Jelly..... I wonder if the active ingredient in all is just muratic acid?
Thanks. For those in places where this brand isn't sold it is basically oxalic acid (with a bit of hydrogen fluoride thrown in)

I just bought a used boat where the previous owner used cheap screws to install all of the accessories, this is gonna make a world of difference
